- It is time to talk about G5 in general, since it's over now... well, sort of over since "Make Your Mark" is over and the only remaining show is "Tell Your Tail", which is just a 5-minute slice-of-life web-series for toddlers. Let's discuss what this generation did right and what it got wrong. And what it could do better. This is the final review of My Little Pony G5.

The reason g5 don't mention g4 or most of it species because season 5 to 9 is owned by discovery family and Hasbro has to pay them fees everytime they mentioned g4 characters and locations which limit g5 of what can they show from g4.
G5 should have been its own thing.

Ending My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in 2019 was actually very smart, as the sales of those toys are still good enough that retailers wouldn't be reluctant to carry them again. Can't say that now...
While Hasbro's insisted G5 sold well, if it did, they wouldn't have ended it so quickly. They wasted money on unnecessary marketing prowess like video games tie-ins for ninth-gen consoles, pointless marketing collabs with TripAdvisor and Roblox and the Tell Your Tale shorts that could've gone towards other forms of advertising. But now My Little Pony's so deep in the hole that it might never come back again.
I already forgot there was a game.
G4 was a gem for all of the fandom and the entire mlp community just how special it is.
It was a rare gem that happened because of Faust's creative drive. We were lucky to have it.

When I watched the New generation movie I thought it was good, and I was excited for whatever show would come out. I believe they nailed introducing the new characters and the movie was actually good so I was excited to see what was next so I waited, and waited. Eventually the new shows came out and I was sooooo disheartened. They had a perfect start to a new generation and they butchered it. It could have been something great and they would have made so much money off of it but they decided to make it all Kidy and stupid. I hope the next attempt will be better. I'm still a brony at heart
I feel like 3D played a huge role in the perception of the show. Because of 3D it feels more like a show for little kids and not for everyone.

When a part of Sunny's song played in the video I got goosebumps just like the first time I heard it, I miss that in the show too

You know what this whole situation reminds me of? The How to Train Your Dragon franchise with Dragons: The Nine Realms. They had an absolutely AMAZING movie, with lots of different shows and sequels and spinoffs that went along with it, and they had grown a very dedicated fan base. Then they decided to make a pointless show for much younger children, set thousands of years in the future, and erase nearly ALL of the lore that had been established, including the very meaningful end of the final movie, all while trying to tie things back to the old movies. It’s really a shame when studies use pre existing franchises to make bad shows just to make more money
Also the shows Riders and Defenders of Berk and especialy Race to the Edge were realy good and actualy deepened and expanded the lore and gave more characteristics and depths even to for example other characters, including main characters dragons.
They truly had potential in the Movie.. I thought it was great but then.. MYM happened and Tell your tale happened and it just fell apart.
Wasted potential is always terrible. But at leats we have one great movie.
G5, starting with the disappointing CGI compared to the charming and more simplistic G4 animation, just didn't capture the same warmth and...well, charm of G4 which was meant to appeal to every generation and gender (since it was originally meant to be a show that parents wouldn't want to gouge their eyes out watching from the start, even before bronies started getting into it) while still focusing on their main demographics. Really, G5 just never really stood much of a chance coming off of FiM which changed the game entirely. It probably would have been more successful if it came before FiM.
The immediate comparison to G4 definitely does hurt the perception of G5.
G5 started out GREAT with the setup it got from the Next Generation movie, and i mean, you could tell there was the same heart and passion behind the movie that was also put into G4. If im being honest, the Tell Your Tale series just feels like it had shortened episodes with simple plots to make things much easier for Hasbro to market towards a more broader foreign audience. Problem was, as a result in doing so, they couldn't give G5 the charm and thunder that G4 held. The Make Your Mark series just confused me, mostly because that i felt that it didn't have to exist; We already had Tell Your Tale, so what was the strategy behind having a separate iteration of the show that supposedly told the same story. By comparison, id say that Tell Your Tale was sorta better, with an emphasis on the word "sorta".
Still, as much of a mess as G5 has been aside from the initial Next Generation movie, i have a rather strong hunch that G6 just might be the return to form that MLP needs right now.
I view Tell Your Tail as just a very cheap advertisement for toys, which wasn't supposed to be anything more.

@@Lexivor MYM could at least tell a story and develop characters (like it did with Misty), with TYT it is practically impossible due to limited format.
@@DrEnnui Misty was like one of the at least somewhat developed characters. Remember how one of the main strenghts of G4 was that the mane 6 made mistakes, had to learn from them, which helped them grow? I mean, the song "We´re not flawless, we´re work in progress, we´ve got dents and we´ve got quirks, but it´s our flaws that makes us work" is true.The characters in G5 didn´t make ANY mistakes and were already perfect, especialy Sunny.
The lack of actual threatening villian also didn´t help. Opaline was more of a joke than real threat.

The only reason I say that G5 is NOT a cash-grab is because Hasbro intentionally scorned and blew off the only demographic who actually buys their shitty toys.

I completely share your thoughts. The movie was great, everything after not so much.
I feel like if the show just went in a different direction, it could've been so much better. Like, I don't think it'd even need to mention G4 in the show, I think if they used it solely in the movie to set up the current world, it would've been fine, and G5 could've had its own unique standalone story/viewer experience, but they didn't decide to go that route and it's sad seeing something that did have potential not live up to it.
Yeah, it's always disappointing when the potential is being wasted.
I think it is the most objective "negative" review I have seen, because it explains the reasons for your disappointment very well and without hating how the majority do it
But anyway, I think that what MYM offered us is not valued, when thinking about what could have been or because there are many "buts" that prevent us from enjoying the content
The thing is that, forgetting about the connections with G4 or thinking that they are mysteries and becoming attached to the characters, you can enjoy MYM, just like another FIM season
It's Hasbro's fault that the G5 doesn't feel "Canon" or there isn't a satisfactory answer to all the mysteries they gave us, but I still think the series on its own is pretty good
Personally, I see the G5 as if it were a "DLC" type "extension" of the G4, where I can enjoy MLP even more (and even MYM as a "season", it seems to me top 4 counting FIM)
Let's see, obviously the series had countless writing and continuity errors (and several bad episodes, especially in Chapter 2) but G4 also had it and it was still the best
But it also had several good things, such as great character development, sentimentality, and extension (albeit confusing) of the G4 lore (and a truly epic battle)
For example, I develop (adding depth) how Izzy's nostalgia (C2E6) Hitch's fatherly love (C2E8 and C4E7) Haven's loneliness (C4E3) Misty's dilemma (C4E4) or Misty's reunion with her father (C5E3)
Or I also develop how the relationship of Pipp/Zipp (C2E3) in characters like Pipp, Haven and Alphabittle (who did not have much prominence before) or what the Great Arc of Misty's Reformation could be like
And also the Lore, by further expanding the legacy of G4 and above all by explaining something very essential like the origin of Celestia, Luna and the Alicorns, which left many plot gaps in G4...
I think I overdid it writing, but I just wanted to say that, I think MYM was a very complete "season" that offered a lot, but unfortunately it didn't fully connect with the public...

I think even if we disconnect G5 from G4 completely it would still feel much inferior in terms of writing and character development.
@@DrEnnui Obviously, because the development of the G4 is the equivalent of the product of 9 seasons, but comparing how "season" MYM had more development than the majority of FIM
Because releasing S4, where each one had a great development for the keys, in addition to the great development that Twilight had in that season (and of secondary characters)
There was no other season of FIM that had such a massive and good development as S4 (or maybe S5) but in that sense I say that MYM had great character development
Although 50% is thanks to Misty, there were also several characters like Pipp, Haven and Alphabittle, who had great development and gave it a lot of depth (and time)
How Pipp, who went from being a generic influencer with no personality, who was glued to her cell phone, to being practically a businesswoman (by creating a festival or selling her products)
Or Haven and Alphabittle, who gave them both a lot of depth and explored their romance quite well (something that FIM didn't start to develop as well, starting at the end of S6)
And not to mention Misty, her development was brutal and she is practically a different character since her first appearance, having on top of it the best reform of the franchise
What would be a great disappointment is if Hasbro decides to abandon G5, without giving it a 2nd season, because of its poor administrative and distribution actions.
In that sense, I think the G5 is being very unfortunate, that Hasbro screws up so much and complicates all the potential it has (for the G6, I have no hope of a series)
I'd better stop writing, but I'm still happy that you express your point of view objectively without throwing hate at the series, different from most reviews xD

2. @EquestriaGuy did give it a chance, like many of us. It just sucked. He literally spent a whole video summarizing it and what he liked and disliked.
Maybe its just not my cup of tea, but i can see the appeal of the majority of g1-3-4, and the original g5 movie, for the whole family, but the rest of g5 really does come off as a cash grab with weak characters, designs and story (I know g3 isnt story heavy, but they at least look good visually, and still have a charm to their stories/characters. G5 after the movie feels like their all just flattened to stale g4 copies). I was really looking forward to g5, especially after the movie, but it has fallen flat at every new turn.
I thought make your mark was great Sunny and her friends learning things from Twilight time, while we get to see her friends in the beginning of a new Generation, as well Celestia and Luna too, and with finally Spike in almost all of chapter 6, and writing this is reminding me of the petition for a chapter 7 of make your mark
Came here after getting "lost" on the second season of Tell Your Tale.
G5 in general was such a letdown. I remember back when the last chapter of Make Your Mark was released,I watched an episode and made my interest on MLP die out,and I nicknamed this the "brony shock".
This also explains why I started to prefer Yu Yu Hakusho than MLP these days,since the anime treats friendship very well

I kinda wish ANG had been a stand alone movie for G5 because it's honestly been a disappointment.
I'm going to treat ANG as a stand-alone movie. I'll be rewatching it from time to time like I rewatch FiM or EG, but I won't rewatch Make Your Mark. Maybe except Bridlewoodstock.
@@DrEnnui Cannot agree more. I've watche ANG several times and don't mind re-watching it more. Hell, when I'm between shows, I always fall back to G4. No part of MYM or TYT will get rewatched, though.
When the fandom was stil waiting fore G5 stuff to start, and we were told that it would still be Canon to G4, i was ekspeckting something in a similar manner to what Avatar The Legenden of Korra was to Avatar The Last Airbender, which was something i also really wanted G5 to be, a spinoff to a successful show, with this spinoff wanting to be good in different ways than its predecessor, (while still being true to the identity behind the brand) because the predecessor’s main characters, were put into a world and given a journey perfect fore them, putting some other characters into that eksact same journey while the world looks eksacly like it did in the previous show, could never result in anything else than a worse version of the previous show, so naturally the writers neither would or should do that, if course just like with LOK something like this will always have its haters because there will always be people that just can’t understand these things, and can’t see they would still have hated it, if it had been produced and made the way they say it should have been done.
When the G5 movie came out, I actually thought we would get something in that eksackt style, which made me really happy, of course when the new show finally came out, it not only showt it wouldn’t actually be that, but also that the writers dident even try to make something that could be memorable, or even would be consistent with the movie that was suppose to start it off, or even itself fore crying out loud, and when i look at how G5 has turnt out today im just thinking “it dident become an absolute waste, because it hadn’t any good direction it could have gone, but because the show writers had no idea what kind of series they wanted make your mark to be, and the path they had set fore themself, felt more in hinesite like a vague idea of what they wanted to do than an actuall set plan” and it’s fore these reasons that I think fore G6, they should scrap everything (eksept fore the movie, that can stay) and remake G5 in the way it should have been made, basically I want them to sit down in a room, talk about eksacly what went wrong with G5, what they should have done instead, and lastly actually make it.
There really wasn't a plan. Lauren Faust planned three seasons of FiM and knew when exactly it would end and how exactly. But MYM started without even knowing where it will end up after just ten episodes.

I really like the G5 characters, and there is so much potential. I binge watched TYT in one day and now I have nothing new to watch or anything to look forward to. The 5 minute episodes just isn't enough. A new movie would be nice, especially if it's made like ANG. It's odd G5 being only on YT and Netflix as well. I'd love to go to a theater to watch another pony movie.

They should hire MLP fans to make G6. There are plenety of talented, artists, animators and writers in the fandom who deserve a BIG break.
That would have honestly been prefect. Big corporations should hire talented artists and let them do what they want. Like Amazon did with Vivziepop (to a certain extent).
Your vid happened to pop up in my feed, but I enjoyed it and you were spot-on. G5 is a mess. Not the worst show I've seen (Pony Life still exists.....), but still pretty bad.
Like you and many other, the character design made me skeptical. I wasn't a fan of the 3D looks (and still hate their teeth). I did want to give this gen a chance, though, so I watch A New Generation. like you and many others, I really liked it! It wasn't perfect, but it was entertaining, had a good message, good writing, and interesting characters (except Pipp at the time). Thanks to the movie, I was actually looking forward to the series.
Then everything went downhill. :-/ Let's start with characters. Much of my gripes were covered by your vid. Sunny became a background character and Izzy became a discount, more annoying Pinkie PIe (ESPECIALLY in Tell Your Tale). Hitch never recovered. He was well-respected, competent, and and supportive in the movie. He became wimpy, a scardy-cat, and weirdly effeminate in the show (nothing wrong with men who more feminine, or women who are more masculine. The personality presented in the movie was NOT what we got for the show). Giving him Sparky to raise made it worse. Speaking of which, Sparky needs to be shot out of a cannon and never return. He was that annoying baby character that EVERYONE hates. I attended an MLP con and when they asked who loved Sparky, all I heard were boos. He was unnecessary and a pain.
Zipp was my favorite character in the movie and for the first part of the show. Then, they decided that being a detective was going to be her one character trait. I don't know why they did this, as she was fine before. I did appreciate her detective skill early on, though, as they were literally the only thing that moved the plot forward (what little plot their was). Aside from Misty, though, I grew to love Pipp. I HATE pop star/influencer characters and that was her only trait in the show. I was pleasantly surprised to see them expand her personality and make her more likeable and relatable. She and Misty were the only characters done right. I did love Queen Haven whenever she was onscreen, but that was about it. The supporting/background characters were forgettable. I also don't understand why they got big names for the movie, knowing full well they wouldn't be able to use them for the show. Just used established VAs, like G4 did.
The characters ran long, so I'm quickly summarize the rest. Opaline was a shit Villain. She was an complete idiot, incompetent, and wasn't likeable in the least. Virtually every villain in G4 had a fan base. The G4 lore was torn to shit. They could have just did their own thing, but they tied it into G4 to ride it's successful coattails. The magic and cutie mark systems make no sense and were used way to much as deus ex machinas. The G5 world is microscopic compared to G4, both the land and the populations. The writing was abysmal. very little plot happened, which made things boring. The filler episodes (most of MYM) felt like filler episodes. I barely remember any of the songs. The VAs were pretty rough at the beginning. TYT isn't great, but all of it is canon. There is virtually no way to know what order to watch everything in, which is extremely frustrating. Spike and the dragons looked awful and didn't need to be there. The ending was generic and then didn't even END! While the Auroracorns look like they could be interesting, and I did like Alura's design, I really have no desire to continue things in TYT.
Overall, this gen was shit. I do like some of the characters, though, so I do continue to buy merch of Zipp, Pipp, and Msity form artists. I do hope G6 is significantly better, though.
Big names for the movie is just marketing. This is exactly why Illumination hires big celebrities instead of voice actors.
And yeah, Sparky was horrible.

@@UnboxingAlyss Illumination usually hires only celebrities to voice characters for marketing purposes. Take a look at Sing cast for example. Illumination is bad influence. They make more childish less creative movies. Because of them American 3D animation is getting more and more juvenile.

@@DrEnnui Very much so. G4 had very smart writing, which is partially why it appealed to such a wide audience. G5 was clearly dumbed down for a younger audience.
Perhaps they should have made the 3D animation have a 2D animation feel to it, which is a good way to make cheap 3D visually appealing.

Tell your tale is okay, its got a charm to it, but still nothing against g4...

Also i loved g4s songs... g5 has also some good songs, but there eighter just 1 minute long or sooo generic... thats very sad.

@@jaywerner8415To be fair, the only dragons that were bipedal in G4 were relatively young in age. Baby, child, and teenage dragons, all walked on 2 legs, but the larger they got, the more likely they were to be quadrupedal. Even in Secret to my Excess when Spike grew large, he walked on all fours. As the Spike we see in G5 is at minimum over a century old, him being quadrupedal doesn't exactly break canon (though there is much else that does).
The movie had really bad dialogue, sequences and plotline in my opinion.
Writers inserting their uninformed and unbased opinions on real life political figures into kids shows is dispicable.
Telling kids that hating each other is bad and that we should be united is truly despicable.

For many, the end of MYM id the end of G5. The MYM special, Secrets of Starlight", set up a new group of ponies and a new villain. That storyline will be continued in TYT.

What about Discord the most powerful creature he is not a pony and his magic lives on another level and it's different and the only thing that can take his magic is the bell. So, yeah, he's a serious plot that is not talked about. You would think he'd be the best person to know about history and what happened to everyone. and the worse plot is that all pony tribes in the movie hated each other so, how did this not summon back the wendigos because of the mistrust and hate between the 3 pony's no snowstorm or blizzard. I mean these things are important too. And again, the one who knows chaos is Discord and how would he not show up.
Discord showing up would've made more sense than Spike.
Discord would be so depressed tbh because of flutter shy (she will die cause pony's dont live forever)

Yeah that pretty much sums it up. Which is Tragic really, The Movie was a grate set up for so much protentional. But all we got was.... this. A show that seems to be made up as it goes along, has a pointless connection to a previous generation which is only ever used as a "refence", and one that is filled with AWFUL writing tropes.
The characters in the show are not the same ones from the movie, You would THINK Sunny being the #1 Fan Girl of the Mane 6 would be more interested in Equestria's history, kinda like her dad was. But no ZIP is the only one that seems to Care AT ALL about "where did the magic go? What happened back then?" Then they rope Spike into this mess and continently give him Slight Amnesia.
Hasbro, for the love of god DON'T make your shows Connected to one another if you not going to DO SOMETHING with it!
It seems the writers had no idea for how long the show will be going so they couldn't plan anything at all.

As much as I don't consider G5 canon (although in my headcanon, there are only 4 seasons of FiM) and dislike it too, there was no need to hear real world political rambling in this video (and Sprout didn't come off like a Trump wannabe, he looks more like he's a ponified version of Char Aznable, that is, if the Red Comet were a pathetic, whiny Mama's boy).
At this point, I’m ready to call G5 a misstep and look forward to Hasbro’s next attempt at MLP in G6.

Personally, I do not accept that G5 and G4 share a universe and a timeline. The world is so fundamentally different in so many aspects that accepting this to be the canonical future of the world of G4 makes no sense. A much better explanation, that works within the canon of the show and comics, is that G5 is an alternate universe to G4, one that could be accessed through one of the many mirror portals. G5 and G4 can share a multiverse, and certain characters can have existed in both worlds, but it allows for events to play out very differently, and for the fundamental mechanics of the worlds to differ as they do.
In this mirror world, the Sun and Moon can rise and set without need for pony intervention. Similarly, weather and seasons change naturally. Windigos may never have existed in this world, explaining the absence of the holiday of Hearthswarming and their absence throughout the discord between the tribes. Cutie Marks function differently and only appear on one flank rather than both. Magic seems to function in completely different ways, as do Dragons and Breezies. The land itself does not match up to any maps of G4 Equestria either. The disappearance of the other sentient races would no longer be such a glaring plot hole. And it allows for the Princesses's decision to trust Twilight to rule the nation in G4 to not be the worst mistake in Equestria's history!
Keep in mind, the only things we truly know happened in both G4 and G5 based on the shows and movie, are the fact that mares matching the appearance of Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, and Applejack once existed. Two ponies named Moondancer and Twilight Sparkle existed. Two alicorns that resemble a young Celestia and Luna existed, though I don't believe there was any real confirmation it was them. A dragon named Spike lived with ponies and knew Twilight. Twilight once ruled the land, and certain holidays like Mares Day and Nightmare Night exist in both. Maybe a few other things are implied. If we factor in the comics, we can add the character of Discord and the existence of a ruined city called Canterlot (albeit located somewhere completely different from where it was in G4). Very few events canon to G4 are ever mentioned or implied to have happened in the world of G5 when it comes down to it.
As such it is far easier to believe that an alternate world bore a few commonalities to G4 amid a myriad of differences, than somehow the world and lore of G4 got changed so radically and utterly as to bear practically no resemblance to its original form over a span of a few decades to centuries.
Alternative universe sounds really good.

I must say, I disagree with your takes here wholeheartedly. I respect the fact that you got your opinion across in a fair manner without sounding repetitive or hateful, like most people have, but most critiques you put forth here have already been addressed within either show. For me, G5 (at least with A New Generation and Make Your Mark) is a worthy successor to FIM’s legacy and even surpasses it in a lot of areas when it comes to story and character. So no, G5 isn’t disappointing and never was for reasons I’ll get into in my own video series.
I am happy for you that you chose to move on and make this your final review though. While I am sad that you didn’t end up loving this generation like me and so many others, you should focus on what you love and enjoy your life. Just offering my two cents.

@@DrEnnui it seems like they’re already making a cinematic universe by revealing stained glass windows depicting events from G1 in the latest episode of TYT. I’m not kidding. Not everything needs to be connected like the MCU, Hasbro. G5 shouldn’t had been connected to G4 to begin with.
I personally like how the story is going, but I kind of wish they would bring back the new version of the elements of Harmony or something like that sunny would be the element of unity Izzy element of creativity the element of kindness Misty element of envy or forgiveness Zip element of knowledge or wisdom pip Element of Resourcefulness I couldn’t think of one for pip but the other members of the group makes sense to our character. Zip could also is a good leader
I would not argue with that. After the movie, Sunny became a background character. Hell, the only one who CARED about what was happening and the past was Zipp. Twilight would have bee all over that mystery and her friends were always willing to help. In G5, the rest couldn't seem to care less.

G5 not bad at all and its not its own thing because fans what somethings off g4 in g5 so g5 really doing what most of the fans what and true the characters might not get much development for some people but i think g5 doing great and things cant be the same in 1000 years or 200 years it would change
No, Hasbro were the ones to connect the two. Not for paying respect to G4 and its fans, but to just use it to further profit G5, because they don’t care about good quality content, just money. MLP has always been a toy commercial of course, but G5 is the biggest example of that yet.

Perhaps the best thing to do with the franchise at this time is to start with a clean slate. To hell with the G5, the only thing it did was destroy everything good about the G4 so that the imbeciles of the scriptwriters would throw out their political shit without it being relevant. What DHX, or whatever the hell they want to call themselves now, needs to do is revive G4 and focus more on the world they create and less on crappy political messages. I know that the main function of MLP is to sell toys, but that is no excuse for the creative team to make mediocre, disjointed or incoherent stories. Did you want to make a divided Equestria with all its inhabitants segregated? Well, then you would have made a fucking prequel! The Origin of Equestria was barely touched on in the last generation, this was the perfect time to tell the founding of Equestria and how the other races came together. It was the perfect time to tell the origins of Princess Celestia and Luna along with the origin of the Alicorns, a species whose existence in the series was vaguely explained, the G5 characters could have fit perfectly as founders, being them the ones who were not They hated each other and together they managed to create the spell that drove away the Windigos. The absence of the Windigos in the G5 is reason to decanonize the entire generation and send it to hell, which is the first thing that should have been done within the fandom instead of giving it a measly opportunity. It is because we have been giving so many opportunities to mediocre products that all this happened. G5 was doomed from the beginning because it is not a continuation of a great series like G4 was, but rather an unnecessary political pamphlet made by a group of mediocre writers who wouldn't know how to make a decent Peppa Pig episode.
G5 is the best generation of my little pony this is just my opinion
