I've previously said the 964 RS isn't in my top five Porsche 911 Rennsports, but can a drive of this stunning Maritime blue example change my perceptions?

Great video. I've owned my 964 RS for 19 years. Same colour. Luckily bought it when they were peanuts.

I was lucky enough to buy one in 1997, from Germany with 9k kms on the clock, 1 owner for £25k (77k DMS), had it loved it, modified it and drove it for 10 years. Then made a silly decision to sell in 2007, with 37k kms on the clock then (It had been stored for a while) sold it for £48k. I loved that car, it was something special. The silhouette of a 964 RS is still beautiful and the engines were all nearer 270-280 and sounded much cleaner and reviver than a C2, especially with a cup bypass or cargraphic exhaust. Porsches can get under your skin and this car did for me, I regret selling it very much. I can't justify or afford to buy one again. They are not a £200k car IMHO but they are special

Appreciate your insights as a former owner, Adrian - that is absolutely golden! Great to hear you had ten years at the wheel of it, too.

I agree. I paid £25 k in 2000 and sold it for 20k in 2004 because I wanted an R500 Caterham. Given the value now I wouldn't race on now obviously. Mine had a genuine 300 bhp with the usual mods.

I have quite a few RS variants. I own a 964RS, 993RS, 2.7RS among other low production notables. I also have a 964 C2 which I made more street fun with shocks, brakes, engine mapping (Steve Wang) and light flywheel and Steve Wang Flywheel chip. I have to say that I like the 964RS best. I will add that it is the hardest suspension of the lot, but it is a joy to drive. I find that it is the rawest of the cars -- sound and ride. Your method of evaluation for cool cars is that they look hyper and have things hanging off the back. I will say that I also have a McLaren and Turbo S -- and ditched them to drive my 964C2 more full time. My 964RS has super low miles so I don't drive it as much as I would like, but when I do exercise it, I feel its the most under rated. Its not about speed, its about involvement and sheer excitement and happiness at the end. Further, my 993RS has a bad-ass wing on the back -- but the beauty of the 964RS is the simplicity. Anyway, I have lots of thoughts, but thats a start.

Love the comments Phil, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. I'd be intrigued to know how you think your C2 compares to your RS with those modifications in place. Totally agree that it's not about speed but involvement, excitement and happiness - couldn't have put that better myself!

Not an easy answer. Two purposes sadly; I collect cars for appreciation so I really only take them out for joy rides rather than hard drives - 964RS fits that mold. Like I said, all my cars are very, very low miles -- just my method to make them more marketable at a future date. Second reason is that I actually love the cars I have -- deeply but its also super expensive to drive these cars nuts. A McLaren is super cool and super solid and super comfy, but it gets old in that its a comfy speed machine -- character is there, but not much and cant compare with an air cooled Porsche. Yup, I own a 959 too but best, I own a mega cool s-l-o-w car which is my fav; 1957 Carrera GS/GT in mint condition. What is that? Well, its a 4-cam engine (same as 550 spyder) in a lightweight but the racing coupe for its day which placed in Targa and La Carrera Panamerica -- extra large fuel tank, racing seats and suspension with deleted everything... Killer car. Again, can't compare. I feel just awesome when I take it out -- but again, cant kill it -- just there to mega enjoy the moment. I guess I don't really care if the C2 with LFW, Steve Wang chips and shocks and tires and Recaro and... vs RS is nuance different - I love them both. So to go full circle --- 964RS is awesome raw car (mix of old school and newer tech) and feel most privileged is to drive a 964C2 daily and mess around with that. So much fun and sooooo coool. Has character, Porsche solid and just a blast -- coming from an owner of recent Porsche Turbo S and McLaren. 964's - and I would say my fav is C2 coupe -- make new cars blush. I like you have driven them all.

Hi Phil. Do you happen to know if your 964 RS is registered on my worldwide database. It currently contains 1260 cars. Please contact me as I may have some archive photos of yours. Thanks, Martin

No clue. My car came from Japan. Please send me your link so I can review.

Japanese delivery cars came with the I912 option code 'VIN plate delete' therefore has no VIN plate or paper option sticker under the bonnet. It's the only version that has this option code. My website is here: www.964rsdatabase.com

I own one. Rubystone Red. I have a lot of rare fantasy Porsches which would make you smile -- and I think the 964RS is one of my best because it is raw. You cant buy or build a true raw car, sorry, impossible -- however I live in Florida so its not practical to drive in the heat without air -- and this car has no air. If you want a nice 964 C2, that is also my favorite Porsche once messed with with Billsteins and upgrade to 3.8L -- in fact, its my daily and I have owned McLarens and own a Taycan Turbo S now for example as a new gen. I drive the 964 C2 daily as my number 1 car. But if you want the best all round rally car, don't look further than a 964 RS. If you want a drivers car, then the 964C2 and enjoy the speed of driving slower but connected to your car like no other.

Thanks for sharing your experience a and views. It's great to hear because I own a 964 C2 (which I bought when they were way less expensive than they are now!) and love my car but am always dreaming of buying dozens of other cars "when I can afford to" lol. Hearing what you said about how you feel about your C2 has made me realise I should appreciate my car a hell of a lot more! 🙂 So thank you!

Ive been on a 964 RS with semi slicks around Ahvenisto race track piloted by a former three time Finnish Rallycross champion and yes it was fun but consider that you can get up to ten (!) as fast or faster and definitely better handling 996 C2 with the price of one 964RS. It really shows that the 911 scene is split in two categories: investment cars and Fahrspass cars.
Nevertheless, the 964RS is a wonderful car. Though, in regard with Fahrspass it's just not quite up there with my 996 C2 3.4 :)

Had 64RS for 4 years. Unfortunately sold it for 20K in 2004..Great on track, but badly flawed for fast driving on UK roads due to the damper/spring settings. Track day tyres and better dampers transform it.

Cheers for the comments, Mark. Great to hear you once had a 64 RS - regardless of when you sold it, most people will have never owned one, so it's great to get your insight.

Nicely done review, Lee. I’m in the market for a 964 and wasn’t sure which way to go. C2 or RS. Since I have a 997.2RS I’m leaning towards the C2 for a more street-able drive. Cheers and thanks for all the great 911 content.

Though the differences are subtle, you can not reproduce the feel, sound, handling and performance of a RS compared to a C2/4. Even if you modify. I’ve driven both and have no doubt the RS is superior!

To be honest driving a 64RS around the leafy lanes is really a complete waste of the cars talent. Get it on a track and you'll begin to understand it .
