  • In this video I am making my OWN new releases. Why wait for Games Workshop when its so fun and easy to convert your own models? I made some Primaris Sanguinary Guard to defend the honour of my Blood Angels army and had a blast doing it.

While I agree the stands seem too high for my taste, they're not my models! 😁 Beyond that, it's not like base height matters at all in 8th/9th edition 40K, as Cover isn't counted the same way it used to be, so base height really doesn't matter, gaming-wise, so do whatever you think looks best for your purposes!
I'm currently struggling with how to mount some of my Orlock Wrecker models in a take-off flying position (as they seem to have been sculpted on the decent). I do prefer the clear plastic flight stands over a solid black stem, but I'm going to have to get very creative with how to make it work to get the model where I want him over the base, and when in the proccess to attach it... 🤔

Drill a hole in the center of the base and run the wire up the middle. This allows you to flip the model over and fill the base with epoxy or glue, and maybe press in a metal washer to add weight to the base. Also, given the other players I've talked to, the reason to use boxed poses and stands is that they tend to result in models being closer to the table and easier to place behind cover.

Love the re-posing! I know you said no to an exhaust 'stand', but adding a bit of dust kicked up by the landing guy (maybe a doughnut of fluff with a thin matte varnish spray to lock it down) might take up some of the space and sell the 'landing' motion. Also, if you weigh down the bases, you can bend the wires to move the apparent center of gravity of the mini closer to the rim of the base. This can give the minis a more kinetic 'off-balance' look rather than appearing to hover. Thanks for the great video!

Nice looking Sanguinary guard models. Like what you did with the flying stem it looks like it will hold the figures in the air a lot better than the plastic stems where the model drops off if you touch it by accident.

It's worth pointing out here there are two different type of heroic styles you are talking about here. The heroic proportions generally seen in art, especially comic books is the one that is about 8 1/2 heads high. 28mm heroic scale, is kind of then opposite. Heads, hands and hand held objects are made bigger proportionately to the body to make them more easily recognizable because they are small miniatures generally viewed from ~half of your body height away (when on the tabletop.)

Primaris are a nice idea for releasing 'true scale' marines. It's their lore that makes no sense and is the main reason why people don't like them. The second is their armor looking new and hi-tech in contrast to the utilitarian used future of the classic marines.

    • @johnsnow5968

_It's their lore that makes no sense and is the main reason why people don't like them._
I'd say, the reason is nostalgia, and the lore make no sense is excuse made up to justify their dislike of Primaris, there's so much more lore that make no sense what so ever, and yet they accept it because it's how things used to be.

Just something to consider that I’ve been looking into. In Age of Sigmar, the Stormcast Eternals have a ton of units that feel like they are made for kit-bashing , or just flat out using them as a replacement (looking at you prosecutors). Also could use something like Knight-Azyros, Knight-Venator, Celestant Prime, or even Sigvald for the Sanguinor or Dante.
You should look into them, I dont currently have any Sanguinary Guard, but will be using Stormcasts to kit-bash them when I do.

Awesome conversion work! Conversions are one of my favorite parts of the hobby (which is why I like Necromunda so much), and this is an Ace project. Also, thanks for not leaning too hard onto the GW criticism; that's one of the thing that turns me off about the scratch-built community in general.
And I totally agree with you concerning the Primaris versions of classic units; that's clearly the direction both the products & the lore are going. There's still a place for the old style/scale SM kits, but they almost certainly won't be making any new ones that way...

Came across your channel because of the 40K scale Imperator and the next recommendation is this. I’ve been playing Blood Angels since Rogue Trader, so anything about them gets my instant attention.
Your Sanguinary Guard to Primaris conversion is not only the easiest I’ve seen it probably one of the best looking. Sadly it’s going to put even more money in GW’s greedy little paws as I’ll have to buy both kits, again. 😄

For the base, try drilling a hole through the base, and poking the wire through before putting the model on it. That allows for more freedom for base decoration.

My first and last conversion of 40K was a gang leader of House Cawdor in Necromunda back in the day. Removed an auto pistol and added a bolt gun to a miniature that had a chainsaw as an offhand. Guy I knew took 1 look and his judgement was "Dodgy conversion". The shame was ever lasting.

vegetable oil is an interesting idea. I have started to use vaselin, that i can apply very thin. I made some greenstufmodls to recast more purity seals i like and i just use a brush to work with vaselin as my moldrelease when pressing the greenstuff into the mold. I love how you made the conversion and it is very inspirational^^ Not being afraid of changes and showing how easy it can be to adapt things is nice.

Great work. I think 3D printing may help in the future to get some 'flying feet" to convert primaris legs and feet to make them look more relaxed while flying.
Also I still like old scale marines. I believe it's the fantasy scale with somewhat goofy proportions that caught my eyes when I began the hobby 15yrs ago. When I got back in the hobby after a break, the primiris where out, but I still have a soft spot for old kits of SM, guards, eldar, etc. I also think that it's not the scale that make primaris better looking, it's the monopause !

I have a tip too, you might want to check out "sprue goo" - basically sprue melted in plastic cement. I find it to be a way better gap filler than for example greenstuff. And it also doesn't suffer from that thing old greenstuff does sometimes, when it dries and becomes a bit brittle. Easy to find a how to make it video for it. :)
