I hope this observation on how she sings helps you figure out how the voice works better, so you can learn how to make smart choices in your own voice.

I love how agile she is, flamenco is a clear influence in everything she does.
She has a major in flamenco. She is one of the few who actually studied flamenco professionally. Pop music is just more profitable for her.
@@kathycadizprofessionaltran7761 Or maybe she fancy to experience with more genres, appart from flamenco, even though she's passionate about it. I guess it's important to be open-minded in the arts as in life.
Best singing advice I've heard "At the end of the road you just gotta think about what sound you wanna make and trust that your body is gonna be able to make it. If it's not able to make it, then you need to go figure out how to make that sound."
Don’t know how much of her stuff you’ve watched but her performance of “Catalina” is insane
Rey Rivera YESSS, At the Billboard Women in Music Awards!
Catalina is belligerently insane.
Beyond all reason.
Fav song hands down.
Rey Rivera YES PLEASE DO CATALINA
If you love Catalina, De Plata will blow your mind :)
Yes!! I was about to comment that he needs to watch it!
She's closing her eyes because she's talking about dreaming. It's perfect for the song.
Thank you! She's amazing.
It's a love song, not about dreaming.
@@Yakoh The moment in the song when she colses her eyes is when she's pictureing herself "being by his side, bein in his arms, being happy"
3000 subscribers without videos but when she closes her eyes she’s saying “i only want to be by your side, dream about your eyes”, that’s what the comment meant, not that the whole song is about dreaming
It's not about dreaming wtf
hii I'm Spanish and I thought about translating the lyrics for you since this is a very emotional song that tells such a beautiful story.
If you make me choose
between you and wealth
with all the greatness
it comes with, oh love
I stay with you.
[note: meaning I chose you, I tried to make the translation as rough as possible]
If you make me choose
between you and glory
for history to talk about me
for centuries, oh love
I stay with you.
I've fallen in love
and I love you and I love you
I only wish
to be by your side
to dream of your eyes
to kiss your lips
to be in your arms
that I'm very happy.
[meaning that those situations make them happy]
If you make me choose
between you and the sky
where flying is free
to go to other nests, oh love
[meaning the sky that gives them the freedom to fly away]
I stay with you.
If you make choose
between you and my ideas
so that without them
I am a lost man, oh love
I stay with you.
I've fallen in love
and I love you and I love you
I only wish
to be by your side
to be in your arms
that I'm very happy.
To be in your arms,
that I'm very happy.
@@Yakoh aww that was so sweet, thank you very much! have a wonderful day 🥺💙
I was going to say if he understood the words her closing her eyes then opening them “yo soy muy Feliz ”... it definitely worked
It's funny that even though I only read these lyrics afterwards, it's like they were already familiar to me as I was reading them. She communicated them perfectly, even for a non-Spanish speaking person such as myself.
can you translate it to Vietnamese also ...thanks!!!
alexng4 seas mamon
The breathiness is a very typical flamenco style of singing, and it's definitely intentional. Rosalía is a wonderful artist that's bringing flamenco to modern times and I'm so happy you enjoyed her performance!
Her faster vibrato is a style choice, culturally inherited from a brand of Spanish music close to flamenco roots called "copla". More specifically she uses the singing style of the old (original) copla singers. You can find some examples on CZcams looking for these very old musicians like Juanito Valderrama. For instance, "El emigrante", a beautiful and nostalgic song dedicated to people in exile during the dictatorship times. You will also recognise some of the voice agilities she does in this song that directly stem from copla: czcams.com/video/E12oRDgjxFw/video.html . Another example is Antonio Molina, even more playful with agilities, just as old: czcams.com/video/6JXa5lh7cqU/video.html
Im from Spain and I am so proud of her.
Same here love how she putting our culture out here
Spain has better singers than her.
Marcos Torres Taboada lol no one said she is the best one, they’re proud because she is doing well
❤️
She's CATALAN.
LA ROSALÍA 💃🏻
tra trá :)
A sí sí
Oh she's good. She's very good.
When a performer can go out there and own the venue that way, they make it look so easy. What we don't see is the countless hours of practice and repetition before this recording.
Just two rehearsals, actually.
Two rehearsals and, actually, was live, not recorded.
“I trust the journey that she’s trying to take me on, and I will go on that journey.” Yep, that's it, such a beautiful love song. I love the way the accent is so much a part of the flamenco sound, it’s so vowel-ful, it doesn’t have the consonants that many Spanish accents have. You can’t really hear the -g in contigo or the -d in enamorado for example, (the ends of those words sound like -i-o or -a-o, distinct vowels with barely any consonant). Also no -s to be heard at the end of words like ojos or labios. She’s also got the European lisp, (brazo sounds soft like bra-th-o and not bra-s-o, for example), which is how I learnt to speak Spanish. The result is that relatively simple pure set of vowels to play with in those beautiful melodic lines, (I love the sound of it, but sometimes I struggle to understand it, it really is very distinctive).
Even though she's not from the south of Spain, the way she sings has that southern accent that you describe. Flamenco is sung like that since it's from the south. Also I wouldn't say the way she talks is an "european lisp". It's literally how Spanish is spoken in Spain.
she's actually catalonian and catalan speaker, that's why she pronounces like this, its quite a different pronuntation from spanish, specially because we have open vowels ( a, e, o) and pronounce diferently g and ll ( i'm catalonian too)
@@Drusille She is catalonian but here she's singing in Spanish with Andalusian accent (south of Spain). She speaks like this because it's the accent used in Flamenco. It has no relation to the fact that she is catalonian.
"do you NEED to open your eyes?"
who are you and what have you done with sam
You're great, amiga.
Sam: voice stuff voice stuff voice stuff, wow scary nails, voice stuff
I agree in his comment of her nails, by the way. They're disgusting, speaking for myself.
But I'm not criticizing her, by the way. I love how she sings and performs and everything, but I don't understand the fashion of that kind of nails, honestly.
@@Lunaticaceleste It's part of gitana culture. Many performers wear them.
@@user-wh2ek4qb8z I'm Spanish so I know very well gipsy culture and I wouldn't say wearing that kind of nails it's part of it but ok.
"Those nails are also very scary"😂😂😂
Mariana Reis thanks I couldn’t figure out what he was saying there

🤣🤣
I now have a scientific explanation for why I sometimes sound like Mickey Mouse/a muppet when I’m singing in the car. Thanks Sam!
Also you should react to her doing "Catalina" - it's straight up flamenco and she does it mostly a cappella.
I love how he was shooketh just by the choir. I was like: “he’s not ready for what’s coming”
Her vibratto is like that because she is from Spain and her singing was primarily Flamenco and the style is like that. She is awesome!! I’m glad you reviewed her ❤️
"YOU don't do it, but she can get away with it."
hahaha loved that
That last verse ("que soy muy feliz" - "that I'm very happy") is sung in a very sad mood. I love the contrast
I can’t believe you’re reacting Rosalía, she’s awesome. Love from Brazil.
Yes!!!!! Finally!!!! Have a look at De Plata (directo sevilla) for more of her pure flamenco live performance. Thank you so much
Rosalia is AMAZING!! She’s singing in very particular flamenco or something like that kind of way...she’s extremely talented!!! ❤️
She is a beautiful and talented Queen, her voice so unique and soft but powerful, her harmonies, vibratos, falsettos ...You should know other fantastic songs from her : " De plata ", " Aunque es de noche ", " Dí mi nombre ", " La hija de Juan Simón ", " Que no salga la luna "," De aquí no sales "..
WAIT I WASNT EXPECTING THIS, the way my heart jumped out. I'm so happy you're doing this 😭😭😭😭
The faster vibrato you make reference to is related to the way Flamenco is sung. Rosalía takes a lot of influences from Andalusian and flamenco culture.
Because my Dad was Spanish, I grew up appreciating Spanish flamenco singers. Rosalía is absolutely ridiculous and you're right - she stares you down to make sure she has effectively killed you with her voice. P.S.: Loved the explanation about hearing the tone in your head first.
I guess you didn't choose the right word when you said "ridiculous" because it doesn't make sense in the context of what you were saying. Maybe you tried to say something good about her in the superlative, like magnificent, horrific, brilliant.
@@Lunaticaceleste And maybe you're not familiar with the nuances of American slang. The word usage there is correct, it is a qualifier to how good she is. For what is worth, I am a Spanish translator and a Spanish native speaker. Here's the definition of ridiculous in the sense I used it: t.ly/yEBU (Apologies to Sam, I am not here to start nonsense.)
@@MariaGonzalezrocks It was the first time I read that word in that context and it didn't make sense for me, of course. Thanks for the info.
Well, Sam. You and I have gotten to the symbiotic relationship on your channel where I make the same analyses either a step ahead of you (due to nothing more than editing because obv) or simultaneously with you as I watch you saying it yourself. Literally almost every comment you made here, I said out loud with you.
I can't stress enough - and I've said so many times before if people who may not be musically inclined don't quite realize - this channel and Sam Johnson are a TREASURE TROVE. Sam, I adore you and your channel ❤
IT'S WORKING!!!
Omgooodness that hit me in the feels! I grew up listening to flamenco and old time boleros and beautiful serenades, being Hispanic, and I love that Spanish cry as we call it....that comes from the soul whew thank you for reacting this 💕
Listen to "a ningún hombre- Rosalía"
thisssss
Maravillosa.🥰 La Rosalía, tra, tra...
FINALLY!!! YOU REACTED TO HER!!! OMG!! I BEEN WNTING THIS SO BADLY!! NEXT TOP DE PLATA LIVE.. THAT VIDEO IS MESMERIZING CHILLS
Im so happy you’re reacting to this , she has a pure , celestial sound . Her record is craazy good too .
At the end she said: " 'cause im so happy " with that look, with that vibrato.... I believe she's just telling the truth
God I love her!! Her voice always gives me chills, I’m so happy you reacted to her and your reaction was amazing 😄
Her live performance of the sing De Plata at Directo Sevilla is definitely one you should see. Some real, raw excellent flamenco that blew my mind.
Finally! Yes! Thanks for this - such a wonderful breakdown. She has so much control and connection to her music. That last a cappella part gets me every time.
Man, YOU NAILED IT!
First time I've heard the song change my life, the interpretation and emotional charge that Rosalia archived here is amazing. And it's not just about her, all the arrangement; lyrics, choir, scenography, it's just delightful!
As a singer I aspire to be capable of deliver that motion.
Always love your videos, greetings from Perú!
this is the National Catalonian Choir, so is not a random one, is the top top in my country
omg i've been waiting for you to review Rosalia!!! i love her so much💓
I love the way she uses her eyes. She said many different things with her eyes. She laughed, she begged, she poked us in the nose, she knew (or felt) what she was saying every time. And then of course there is her voice. Wow!
omg yes! she's an amazing artist. her performances for slow songs are vocally amazing (in my non-professional opinion lol) and her album literally tells a story, and it's very deep. she found her way to mainstream pop keeping some references to her origins as well as to reggaeton and thank god she did because that's how I found her. sometimes in her live performances for those upbeat songs she sounds a bit out of breath, but she also dances so it's totally understandable and I believe it's something she's working on. loved to watch your commentary on an artist that I love, I hope u check out more of her stuff
I have never been this early before. it feels so weird. 😆 but I just wanted to say how much I love your reactions! they brighten my day.
I love the style of her voice
“Those nails are also very scary”😂 that sound soo funny Sam😂😂👏🏻
I love Rosalía she's a amazing artist and she's the new generation that embodies the flamenco music where it shows so much emotions and it tells a story
Me encanta Rosalía, ella tiene muchiiiiisimo talento que voz!!
I never noticed how many freckles you have!
As a choral singer and a pop/folk soloist I love how you pointed out the choral vowel sounds! You are fabulous! Another great analysis.
I completely lost it when I saw you had uploaded this video! Thanks for checking my suggestion, Sam. I loved the analysis and I'm glad you enjoyed Rosalía's performance. Hope we get to see you react to more of her work. Greetings from Mexico!
I just don't believe that it's happening. Bring some snacks, and I'll watch it immediately!!
Have been waiting AGES for you to react to Rosalia. Really loved it! 😊😊😊
Omg yes finally some Rosalía!! I loved it! But I really want you to check her out singing “Catalina” Live! It’s truly amazing
tldr:
Sam: There are rules. They mostly exist. They definitely exist for you. For her, sometimes. I'm not sure. Not so much. They definitely do for you though.
Math: You < Rosalia
Hey man. Really love your videos, they've been doing a lot to convince me to reevaluate the judgements I've had on my voice and potential for singing prior to this. Seems your channel focuses on mostly quite famous singers/videos, so not sure if it would ever be on your radar, but I would love to hear your thoughts on Allan Rayman in a video. Has one of the most unique singing styles I hear out there right now and just put out a new album. The CBC show from a couple years ago would be a good example. All the best, regardless!
I've been waiting so long for you to react to this! Yay!
Nobody:
Not a single voice teacher at all:
Sam: *she's dope!!* 😂
Love how you enjoy a good performance and still explain everything so detailed. I learn a lot from you!! 😁
Your eyes and the way you stare when you are analyzing someone's performance has this intense charm and appeal, ngl.
I love her. I'm glad you reacted to her. Welcome back, by the way.
Yesssss, i was waiting for the reaction!! She is amazing.
she's so amazing, i love this song, is basically about love/yearning you can definitely feel it from this performance!
Yay, thank you for always being fun and informative! I always learn something from these videos. I'll (probably) never learn to open my eyes, but I've hung on to those choral habits! Love the baby bun too :)
Finally! I've been waiting for this ❤️❤️
Please make more Rosalía videos!!!
the original is from a famous spanish gipsy group called Los Chungitos, just so you know !!
Yes!!!!! I've been wanting you to react to her. I love her!!!
I've been waiting for this!! i love her soooooooo much
Oh my god!! Finally. I loveee her interpretation of the song, i truly wanted you to analyze it. Thank you sm :)
She is amazing and I’m so happy you finally analysed her! She really does some cool stylistic things in her live of El Plata and I would be so interested to see you analyse that!!
This was gorgeous..😍😍😍 haha the way you mentioned eye contact in this video reminded me of a video I saw on Twitter a little while back.. fka twigs was doing a show and she started out walking past the audience and she suddenly stops, gets within an inch of this one guy's face, and just stands there staring into his soul for like a full minute or two, vocalizing and then she starts her set. It is electrifying just to watch, and I think it proves the power of eye contact in a musical performance, but I also think it would make for a very entertaining and short (so hopefully easy to do 😋) reaction vid 🥰🥰
You made me so happy with this reaction, love Rosalía and love you 😍😍
I appreciate that you react to so many different types of music and voices.
La Rosalía! Awesome video! I've been waiting for this since the first time I listened to her.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SO LONG OMG IT FINALLY HAPPENED
I dont think ive ever seen you gush over someone like this. She gives me chills. probably an angel
Her vibrato ist very good and well controlled. Hispanic Singers use a different vibrato because of the rythm of their music. Actually alot countries uses different vibratos Like arabic Singers or japanese. ITS Up to what Kind of music they sing
I find so many cool performances through your videos. I don't think I would have seen this otherwise :D
Thank you! 🤗 I love your reactions, we learn from them. Kisses from Argentina! 😘
I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS REACTION FOR SO LONG
Hi! I am from Argentina and I speak spanish. I love your videos. Rosalia has become a huge artist in spanish speaking countries This is a beautiful and emotional song. When your video appeared I was surprised about it and really wanted to know what your thoughts were. I really think that u should do more videos abour her. Her whole album it's amazing and catalina's performance is insane too! Waiting new videos Sam!!!
Been here since like 20K followers, keep up the great work!
Thank god you are alive and hopefully healthy! Wish you all the best and thank you for your videos. Greetings from austria and stay save! :)
I had never heard that"soy muy féliz" "I am very happy" with such sadness. Wonderful.
This is the second time I’m watching just THIS reaction (Love you Sam!😘), probably the 15th time I’ve watched this performance...and dang it if Rosalía didn’t have me in tears by the song’s end yet again. 👑💖
FINALLY!! I WAS WAITING FOR THISSS
Everybody finishes "Me quedo contigo" reaction with tears in their ayes but this guy.
Queen of Flamenco. This is very different from what we have heard normally. And she is 🔥🔥
that's not really flamenco but ok
Thanks for the great reaction. To check more on her voice quality, please react to these 2 songs from her: De Plata and Reniego.
I was longing for this reaction. I just subscribed
I love how you analise, cause it’s actually difficult to explain how someone sings well without just saying that he sings well
You finally did this one omg I've waited a year 😭
She’s a postgraduate in Flamenco Voice by Royal Conservatory of Barcelona , but she isn’t of gypsy etnia. Her first DVD was her Doctorate.
React to more of her stuff! She’s amazing 💕
Trusting yourself is such a great and important point. You can practice and focus and refine technique plenty, but if it comes to the performance and you don't trust yourself to produce what you want to produce, it makes things so much more difficult than it needs to be.
I love your review n explanation
she opened her eyes real quick to make sure she didn’t levitate through the roof and into the heavens
Well Sam thank you for introducing me to a new artist. Take care of yourself and stay healthy.
Can you react to Harry Styles' cover of "Girl crush" at the BBC?
The lyrics are beautiful too
As a Latin former choir girl, I love Rosalia and the oh so powerful control of her voice, to me it's wonderful and I don't think I've ever hear a voice quite like hers
I recommend a Spanish singer, her name is Diana Navarro with the song "El perdón" She has a very particular voice. And she always transmits with those characteristic melismas she has. Diana is also very versatile when it comes to singing different styles. The truth is that she is a very versatile singer. Best regards.
React to ROSALÍA - De Plata (directo/live)
