2:10 The problem with consuming food before you workout
    2:40 Working out while fasting
4:50 What type of exercise to do
In this video, we’re going to talk about whether or not it’s a good idea to work out while fasting. People have this idea that they have to eat before they exercise to have enough energy.
The purpose of the exercise is to make you more fit, to increase the health of the system, to build more capacity, to have less stress, etc.
During a workout, you’re stressing your body, your body adapts to that stress, and then it improves various things. But, make sure you don’t overtrain because overtraining will inhibit your sleep, keep your inflammation up, and reduce your gains.
    The four variables of exercise:
    1. Type of exercise
    2. Intensity of exercise
    3. Duration of exercise
    4. Recovery after exercise
Things that happen during recovery mode:
    • Glycogen reserve replenishment
    • New capillaries are grown
    • New mitochondria
    • Cell structure repair
    • Restored enzymes
    • Cleared lactic acid
    • Increased growth hormone
    • Increased glucagon
Disadvantages of eating before you workout or doing carbo-loading:
    • You can decrease the amount of growth hormone you produce
    • You can increase lactic acid
    • You greatly diminish the ability to burn fat
    • You can create insulin resistance
    Benefits of exercise while fasting:
    • A massive additional increase in growth hormone
    • Amazing reparative actions
    • You can enhance fat burning by 20-30%
    • You can improve insulin resistance
    What to do:
What type of exercise you should do depends on your recovery. If your recovery is poor, you could do low-intensity workouts like aerobic exercise or walk. You can build up to high-intensity interval training and compound resistance exercise.
In summary, yes, it may be very beneficial to exercise while fasting, especially for reparative actions.

In the US Military, during boot camp, we would always work out and exercise pretty hard before feasting on a big well earned breakfast. Even though it was 5am in the morning, we would actually feel highly energized working out /or exercising first. Part of the reason why I was able to lose 45lbs (20 Kg) during those months. We are in month of Ramadan right now and instead of decreasing my cycling activities I have increased the weekly trip count but reduced my total distance to an average of 22.00 miles per day. Prior to training, you would need to eat a healthy simple carbohydrate snack that has a good source of potassium, sodium, and all your other electrolyte. That is because if something were to chase you back in the wild days, you will have the energy to run away. So when you are scared for you life, adrenaline/epinephrine/cortisol kicks in, and then you are able to break down glycogen to glucose.

But when you do 40-60 minutes of cardio on a water only fast, it destroys the places that fat is hard to burn, like the love handles and pects. Also, it will restart weight loss if you are in a plateau, but you have to go to the gym.

Thanks for including the fact that it can even help with bodybuilders, as that was my prime concern whilst watching this video (one you helped to alleviate).
Will be exercising first thing in the morning, even before breakfast now.

Should I Workout While I am Fasting?
So the short answer is YES!!
I am doing Interment fasting. I have a cup of coffee with a table spoon of milk.
Sometimes I have a couple of mugs of tea .
    I
I cycle 25 miles, then I use some light dumbbells ( 3kg each arm x 100 reps each exercise ) and then have my breakfast around 4pm. ( 2 egg and tomato toasted sandwich & 2 cups of tea with skimmed milk).
I then try finish my evening meal by 7 pm.....and then start again.
In 3 months I have lost 33lbs or 15 kg. I have cut out ALL sugars / sweeteners including fruit.
    I have never been on a " diet "
    Feeling 😆.😊

I was eating an hour or two before workouts, and it gave me some energy to high hard and heavy, but it caused issues with timing. Now I just got the gym, usually fasted, and I still have plenty of energy. I can't go super heavy, but I can be very consistent and that is far better.

I started intermittent fasting as was always In sport, due to lockdowns and a new home move from Oct to May I did Nothing active, and balloon out, since starting 2 weeks ago I'm back down 10lbs in two weeks. But the most amazing thing I never thought was the mental clarity from fasting, thanks for your videos doc, would love to see you do one on why when we stop being very active to completley sedentary why we balloon so fast, love to know the science of it 👍

I do fasted relatively low intensity cardio 3 times per week and love it. However as a CrossFit athlete, I’ve found 45-65 carbs, with sub 10 grams of protein and close to no fat about 1 hour ore workout is optimal for my performance. I’ve done many wods and lifts fasted too and they go ok but some simple carbs always give me a competitive advantage. Thanks for the content Dr. Berg.

I guess it really depends on the the type of workout. I am 57 and have been an avid cyclist (mountain biking) since the late 80’s. Agree “carbo loading” is not necessary however for long distance endurance events I don’t know if it could be done without putting carbs in your body.

Berg’s advice is popular because it caters to those who exercise primarily for beauty instead of health or improved sports performance.
