2:40 Working out while fasting
4:50 What type of exercise to do
In this video, weâre going to talk about whether or not itâs a good idea to work out while fasting. People have this idea that they have to eat before they exercise to have enough energy.
The purpose of the exercise is to make you more fit, to increase the health of the system, to build more capacity, to have less stress, etc.
During a workout, youâre stressing your body, your body adapts to that stress, and then it improves various things. But, make sure you donât overtrain because overtraining will inhibit your sleep, keep your inflammation up, and reduce your gains.
The four variables of exercise:
1. Type of exercise
2. Intensity of exercise
3. Duration of exercise
4. Recovery after exercise
Things that happen during recovery mode:
⢠Glycogen reserve replenishment
⢠New capillaries are grown
⢠New mitochondria
⢠Cell structure repair
⢠Restored enzymes
⢠Cleared lactic acid
⢠Increased growth hormone
⢠Increased glucagon
Disadvantages of eating before you workout or doing carbo-loading:
⢠You can decrease the amount of growth hormone you produce
⢠You can increase lactic acid
⢠You greatly diminish the ability to burn fat
⢠You can create insulin resistance
Benefits of exercise while fasting:
⢠A massive additional increase in growth hormone
⢠Amazing reparative actions
⢠You can enhance fat burning by 20-30%
⢠You can improve insulin resistance
What to do:
What type of exercise you should do depends on your recovery. If your recovery is poor, you could do low-intensity workouts like aerobic exercise or walk. You can build up to high-intensity interval training and compound resistance exercise.
In summary, yes, it may be very beneficial to exercise while fasting, especially for reparative actions.

In the US Military, during boot camp, we would always work out and exercise pretty hard before feasting on a big well earned breakfast. Even though it was 5am in the morning, we would actually feel highly energized working out /or exercising first. Part of the reason why I was able to lose 45lbs (20 Kg) during those months. I am road cyclist and as a Muslim used to reduce my weekly rides in Ramadan almost 80%. We are in month of Ramadan right now and instead of decreasing my cycling activities I have increased the weekly trip count but reduced my total distance to an average of 22.00 miles per day. In Ramadan we fast and abstain from and food, liquid even water from dawn till sunset. What I have noticed is my recovery time has significantly reduced and I feel more energized during the day when I m in state of fasting.
Catholics used to do that for Lent. I think more people should follow that practice. Fasting is the best practice.

I think that's why people back in time were strong because they ate less and work more
now we eat way too much and work less, obese people everywhere.

I can only workout fasted! How the hell can you workout with food in your stomach, it makes it so much harder! Lions don't chase down another kill if they're already fed!
physical activity just after a meal is bad... fast, work out and THEN eat, rest and fast again...
Yes!! Exactly.
Eating and then exercising even makes me nauseous so Why eat u dey ment?
I don't think Dr. means fast as in skip breakfast & work out. He means fasting 3- 40 days & working out.
That is why you don't go to the gym directly after a meal. You eat, you relax for two hours ... and then you work out.
Listen, Iâm no doctor here but what Iâm about to say has and will continue to hold merit. If more and more people incorporated some sort of intermittent fasting into their lives, they WILL live much healthier and longer lives...all by just not eating, simply put. The science on the benefits of IF go so far beyond weight loss that itâs truly astonishing how revolutionary it can be.
I have always been told not to exercise when fasting. However thanks to your video you have informed me that the best results can be obtained when you do a combination of a fast and workout. Thank you Dr. Berg for sharing your insight and knowledge in this area. I appreciate you!!!

I can't eat and workout. For one, I workout at 4/4:30am and two, I don't like the feeling of having something in my stomach while lifting or doing cardio/HIIT.
Agreed
Good for you.
If you are going to do cardio/HIIT, you need carbohydrate. It is essential for this type of exercise regime. Prior to training, you would need to eat a healthy simple carbohydrate snack that has a good source of potassium, sodium, and all your other electrolyte. This can be one or two bananas/apple an hour prior to working out. If you want to increase your intensity during working out, you can fill a water bottle up and add a pinch of sugar and salt and consume during your workout session.
@@datoneaznboy I don't believe you. Why does the body store energy then?
@@raymeester7883 There are two places the body store energy as glycogen: muscles and liver, but predominately in the muscles. That is because if something were to chase you back in the wild days, you will have the energy to run away. So when you are scared for you life, adrenaline/epinephrine/cortisol kicks in, and then you are able to break down glycogen to glucose.
Weirdly when I exercise in a fasted state, i get lethargic at the start but stronger as the workout progresses

@@peaceluvnhappy I look at it like this. When you exercise your body is working at a high rate. That high rate stimulates certain functions in the body like an increase digestion and absorption rate. When this happens the body is pulling what it needs because of the increase stressors of the workout. Thank You Doc!! You. Da. Man!!! This video was GREAT! Watched it again and again. Anyone that has tried it knows first hand that exercise while fasting is GREAT.... But your analysis and explanation SERIOUSLY helps my comprehension/ understanding, and therefore my confidence in what I am doing. In short: You. Da. Man!!!
I've done 1 or two day fasts (water only) and I worked out like normal, which was yoga, cardio and weights. It didn't feel like I was suffering from hunger. But when you do 40-60 minutes of cardio on a water only fast, it destroys the places that fat is hard to burn, like the love handles and pects. Also, it will restart weight loss if you are in a plateau, but you have to go to the gym.
This Ramadan, for thĂŠ first time I'm gonna workout while fasting! I'll update :)

More hgh is produced when you fast.
Love you Dr.Berg... you have changed my life and my perspective about many things...
Thanks for including the fact that it can even help with bodybuilders, as that was my prime concern whilst watching this video (one you helped to alleviate).
Will be exercising first thing in the morning, even before breakfast now.
Iâm the one who enjoy fasting workout even though most of my workouts are just low impact ones.
Can you do a video for the optimum training time for food and water fasting as well???
Would be highly appreciated đđđ
THANK YOU!!
So much helpful information that I needed. Thank you!
So cool to finally find someone who knows everything about everything.
Iâm on week two of fasted cardio and I love it!!! I sweat a lot!!!! But I get this crazy energy boost that I love. I was avoiding it because I thought I would die and now Iâm regretting not doing it sooner
Should I Workout While I am Fasting?
So the short answer is YES!!
I am doing Interment fasting. I have a cup of coffee with a table spoon of milk.
Sometimes I have a couple of mugs of tea .
I
I cycle 25 miles, then I use some light dumbbells ( 3kg each arm x 100 reps each exercise ) and then have my breakfast around 4pm. ( 2 egg and tomato toasted sandwich & 2 cups of tea with skimmed milk).
I then try finish my evening meal by 7 pm.....and then start again.
In 3 months I have lost 33lbs or 15 kg. I have cut out ALL sugars / sweeteners including fruit.
I have never been on a " diet "

Ben Par thx for the answer
Ben Par thanks because I was getting slightly confused lol
The milk in your coffee is breaking your fast you need to drink it black
@@DrDBYE as long as its less than 50 calories it should not break the fast
Everything that has calories breaks a fast
Anybody's here in 2021 .The algorithm of youTube is too much good because this month is Ramadan. Thank sir understand me about fasting with workout..Love⤠you â¤â¤â¤đ¤˛đ¤˛đ¤˛
Wow thank you doc! Your videos are all very educational! This channel is a Gem indeed đŻ
I was eating an hour or two before workouts, and it gave me some energy to high hard and heavy, but it caused issues with timing. Now I just got the gym, usually fasted, and I still have plenty of energy. I can't go super heavy, but I can be very consistent and that is far better.
Share my experience during I.F. I had a light headache when I run during fasting morning. But no problem when I run during my eatting window in the afternoon. 10 days in 16/8.
I learned something NEW today! Thanks Doc!
I started intermittent fasting as was always In sport, due to lockdowns and a new home move from Oct to May I did Nothing active, and balloon out, since starting 2 weeks ago I'm back down 10lbs in two weeks. But the most amazing thing I never thought was the mental clarity from fasting, thanks for your videos doc, would love to see you do one on why when we stop being very active to completley sedentary why we balloon so fast, love to know the science of it đ
Omg yes yes yes! Thank you Doctor
Youâve no idea how much I needed this video â¤ď¸
Your notification has literally made my day. đđť
Pourriez vous m'expliquer ce qu'il dit , je ne comprends pas l'anglais , merci
Same as me

I do functional training exercises while on my 23rd hr of fasting. Iâve never seen my body so full of energy & capacity to do the workout. If I had a meal prior im usually easily fatigued
You are outstanding Doc everyone needs to hear your advice it's golden. Im starting a 16 - 21 day fast this Saturday so am anxious because I know the first 3 - 7 days will be hard but I love training so thank you
Thanks Dr. Berg for sharing such awesome knowledge

I always workout for 1.5 hours towards the end of my 16 hour fasting window. Then eat. Feel great. 61, BMI is 21. Muscular build.
I am currently fasting during Ramadan and I worked out yesterday after a kind day of fasting had about 2 hours to go and I realised when I was running I was so much more lighter and stronger
Great!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Dr Berg!
Wow. Iâve learned a lot from not only watching this video but from the comments section as well lots of good real life experience. Love it!!!!!
I do fasted relatively low intensity cardio 3 times per week and love it. However as a CrossFit athlete, Iâve found 45-65 carbs, with sub 10 grams of protein and close to no fat about 1 hour ore workout is optimal for my performance. Iâve done many wods and lifts fasted too and they go ok but some simple carbs always give me a competitive advantage. Thanks for the content Dr. Berg.
Good to hear
Yeah this advice is primarily for vanity and not performance.
I guess it really depends on the the type of workout. I am 57 and have been an avid cyclist (mountain biking) since the late 80âs. Agree âcarbo loadingâ is not necessary however for long distance endurance events I donât know if it could be done without putting carbs in your body.
Bergâs advice is popular because it caters to those who exercise primarily for beauty instead of health or improved sports performance.
Go tell a Tour de France cyclist to race in a fasted state and see what happens. Lmao
@@neoneherefrom5836 dude carbs nearly killed me. This isnât about vanity it IS about health
Happy Thanksgiving y'all đŚ đŚ đŚ
Jay Ferg5 you too bae đ
Happy Thanksgiving, Jay and to all.
Happy thanksgiving:)
Amazing content!đ Thanks so much for all the information... I'll be honest, I'm the first person to usually argue don't workout while fasting you'll burn out and all that...You just gave me a reason not to. Now that's it's Ramadan, it's the best to get up, get moving but also don't overwhelm yourself. Thanks again:)!!đđ
Legend ,so happy I subscribed to Dr Berg. So much truth and results.
