Dirt Jump Redemption on my 2023 Marin San Quentin!

  • The Marin San Quentin has dirt jumping in it's blood! The bike is co-designed by professional slopestyle rider Matt Jones, and the massive amount of standover clearance on the 2023 model speaks to it's trackable intentions. But I've had a harder time than I expected get used to jumping the bike with it's long, low, and slack geometry. Today I'm taking the San Quentin 3 out on a couple new sets of jumps to see if I can find redemption, or if the bike will fail me again.

      Haha yep! About an hour north of Bend. Definitely not the Lair, but it’ll do until the snow melts!

      Is that jump line anywhere near the proving grounds? I think it’s somewhere out in central Oregon yeah?

      It’s about 2 hours from Prineville, where Proving Grounds is. Similar terrain though! Just not similar features lol

    Hey man! Lovely review as always. I have same fork on my Ragley Mmmbop. And no ideas on these forks or overall how an air fork work. Also I am nervous about doing a tubeless on my wheels. I think it would be great if you could make a video on such basics like the ones I mentioned above and cover more basic things to do or setup when someone buys a bike. Appreciate your contents.
    Ps: I can’t find any video on Yt like such

    Next time you come to Madras, try the entire Trestles jumpline trail. It's by far the best in the system. 3x longer than Strong whiskey. There is an up route to the top (where the ice chest is located).

      We actually didn’t like that one quite as much, lots of the jumps don’t seem quite finished yet, but I bet it will get dialed this spring! I’ll have to come out and do some dig days!

    I've been having the same problem myself, I'm used to a 26" DJ bike & my 27.5" wheeled hardtail feels really unruly in the air , kinda hard to manoeuvre about , it sort of feels like it goes where it wants in the air .

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  Před rokem

      Ya, the longer frame, slacker headtube, and variation in travel is you move up the loft is definitely a weird feeling!

  • @Changchar37
    @Changchar37 Před rokem +1

    I’m on a business trip to Houston and rented a San Quentin 1 from Biking Roots to try the frame out, it is for sure not as playful as the middle child. The frame build quality is decent as entry level MTB, definitely not at the level of RSD. The geometry is pretty good for hardcore terrain and very confidence inspiring. BB is too low so the pedal strikes doesn’t happen more often which is a huge bummer

    • @Changchar37
      @Changchar37 Před rokem

      czcams.com/video/vpHE4N0ow-U/video.html This bike. The only downside is that it doesn’t have a dropper so I didn’t get to enjoy the super low seat tube. Sick bike for sure! I feel it ride very similar to Yeti SB140 with minuses the rear suspension of course.

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  Před rokem

      Ya, I didn’t like the lower BB either. I will say that the build quality on the SQ3 is pretty good! I’m going to try it with a mullet setup and -1 degree angleset and see how it fairs. Should raise the BB, keep the same travel, and keep the HTA the same. It’d shorten the reach too, which I think I’d enjoy on the XL frame I’m riding

      @Changchar37 Před rokem +1

      @@ridingwithjoshandwendy sounds like a plan, I was looking at the bike and thinking similar things. If it’s me, I would go with shorter crank set as well. I’m 5’7”, tried some 150-155mm cranks and I love them! Feels much better than 170mm in terms of continuous power output and reducing pedal strikes

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  Před rokem +1

      If I l upped the travel, ya. 64 degrees is already about as slack as I like for doing more jibby/dirt jump stuff, would also help raise the BB too

    • @TheCaptainsCog
      @TheCaptainsCog Před rokem +1

      @@ridingwithjoshandwendy makes sense. Seems like 65° may have been the magic number considering this bike was designed with a 140mm fork.

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  Před rokem +1

      I’d probably run a 140 mm 29er fork with a -1 degree headset, which should keep it right around 64 degrees

    Hi, im kinda new to enduro frames / enduro riding.. is that a 2.8 tires? Im riding 2.4/2.5 with sq3 2022.. most trail riders are telling me to go 2.8 since im on a hardtail

      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  Před rokem +1

      It has 2.6s. I run 2.4s on my RSD Middlechild and love them, super fast, light weight, and still pretty grip. The only real drawback is a bit harsher ride feel

    Hi Josh, how tall are you and what size are you riding? I don't have a dealer near me and want to confirm sizing. I am 5'10". My numbers tell me that I should be riding a M. I base this on TT and Reach. I do like the seat tube angle. Bikes online has me on large. Would M be too cramped? My body is proportional.

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  Před rokem +1

      I’m 6’1” and on the XL. I’d definitely go with the L for you, the steep seat tube angle makes the seated pedaling position feel a lot shorter than the reach numbers sounds and I think a medium would feel pretty tight. Also, the super low seat tube means you can keep your weight centered over the bike, more forward over the BB than over the back wheel, which makes it feel less stretched out while descending out of the saddle. If you end up purchasing from bikes online it would be a huge support to our channel if you do so through your affiliate link here: bikesonline-usa.sjv.io/9gGj5Q Thanks!!
