*There were two errors in this game.*
*The first was a misplay with Rooftop Storm + Varina. Sadly, I should have looked it up on Google, but I thought it seemed clear from the wording.*
*The second was a narration error involving Ojutai's Command. Eric picked Counter Target Creature Spell + Draw a Card (and not bounce, which was wrong).*

I just got to this part, and would ask about it. xD The commander tax should be paid even with Rooftop. It was about 4/6 at that time, right? And it wasn't actually "slighlty" missplay. It cost the game for Matt.
I like the super optimized and competitive nature of the decks played on your channel.
Every time Chulane wasn’t pronounced “Cullen” or “Hullen” is also an error. 🤷♂️
Yeah, I was playing varina and my opponent told me about it. Broke my heart into a million pieces.

Man, that Noyan Dar control/make your own manland voltron deck is the illest! Legitimately impressed, that is one of the silliest win cons I have seen.
Eric shouldn't have been able to cast Varina from the Commander Zone after playing Rooftop Storm, as you still have to pay Commander Tax when the Storm is out.

@@khurgar8120 It did though, because Eric would not have had a zombie army and would have lost. Totally swung the outcome. When a mistake like that changes who wins, it does ruin the outcome.
@@andrewfugle1037 He would have been about one turn behind where he was in this game, he'd still have won. The game was over when Matts couter spells ran out and the darksteel citadel got exiled.
Aidam's downfall was to put Food Chain on top of his deck during his own main phase, thus giving everyone else a full rotation to brace themselves for the combo. Against three blue players, that's a big "NO".
Yeah especially when enlightend is a instant speed tutor if you are gonna play a combo deck you have to do it out of nowhere otherwise face punishment by other players. You need to wait until the cost is clear, have at least one counter spell just encase of a force of will and/or negation and then play the combo with an answer prepared. As a combo player has to play the game like its a mexican standoff like in the cowboy movies.
What a WONDERFUL game! That Noyan Dar deck was awesome! And everybody properly threat assessed! Awesome!
Darksteel Citadel and Soul-Guide Lantern were the stars of this game. The former did so much damage, and the latter kept Muldrotha from ever having a graveyard to work with.
Soul-Guide Lantern seems like a solid upgrade over Relic of Progenitus nowadays.

seeing as how it was the chulane deck, and it was running both Aluren and Alarm, I would hazard a guess that it is a standard high-max power list.
Okay, full disclosure: every time someone does get their on-camera list to Muddstah, an angel gets its wings!

Always loved Noyan Dar. There was a Noyan Dar deckles that utilizes Griffin Canyon for infinite damage or infinite mill (via Altar of Dementia) that hooked me up in the first place.
Ouu I don't know of the combo, could you enlighten me please?
@@ChonoRock1198 You animate Griffon canyon with commander. Use a spell like
1. Arcane Adaptation
2. Wings of Velis Vel
3. Unnatural Selection
To give it changeling, making it a Griffin. You then use its second ability on itself indefinitely and go ham.

One of my fav episodes you’ve done! Loved the creature decks all stomping the combo deacon then swarming each other like civilized wizards! That lantern makes recursion decks quiver in fear 🥺

Varina is such an powerful commander, I play an budget version of the deck by my own and I'm often surprised how the deck can escalate
I love this smiley faces from Sam's cards after he died. Quickly after he chnaged it to sad face, but when darksteel citadel was exiled, the smiley face returned :)
New favorite, playing my boi Noyan! Haven't seen anyone else have him in a while.
Another misplay here is with Mana Drain:
Since he cast it before combat, he would have gotten the colorless mana in the second mainphase, not on the following turn.
Oh man, Varina! I used to have a Varina deck but it was more powered up than who I normally played with and I didn't end up playing it very much. I'll have to make it again sometime. So much fun to get Varina value by making cheap zombies to trigger her ability and churn through your deck. I usually won by a a Gravecrawler combo or Approach, again, getting to the card again with Varina's ability.
Really loved the zombies catching up, even with the grvyard removed. I think it was quite flavorful.
Great game, didn't think the Varina deck could pull it off but endless ranks of the dead combos so well with Varina.

I never took Noyan Dar seriously, but it does work in this game. Apparently, I don't read well that I missed all that sweet value. I am impressed!
Man, that Zombie army brought Eric back from death with that amazing comeback. The real MVP was return to dust for taking out the darksteel citadel.
Zombies has a tendency of coming back XD. Thats why i love my Varinna deck, it just keeps coming back and never dies.

So like, casting all of those cantrips when he didn't have his commander (Noyan Dar) out was a bad idea.

Mana drain's Mana should have gone into effect the same turn it was cast. The next main phase, was main phase 2.

I think it might have been an error in narration because Matt does not use the Mana Drain mana at all. So he either missed it, or chose to let it fizzle.
The ONE deck list I wanted to take a look at is coincidentally the one that is missing. It's sort of like finding cards at my LGS: missing the ones I need, always have the ones I don't. XD
As a big fan of The scarab god, I was never that interested into varina for a zombie tribal, but this was a sweet game!
Is there a chance we'll see an updated Ghave, Guru Of Spores deck in the future?

Beautiful showing from my girl Varina! I was so sure her pilot was out of the game because he was held down for so long, but one should never underestimate that second ability (in spite of the unfortunate misplay)!

I liked this noyan and varina decks :D (i have one Varina myself, with some ways to cheat the discard or abuse the draw)
Muldrota was... Quite like every muldrota i've seen. Nothing new here.
For Chulane, sadly it's a combo deck, which i put in the "Meh" section. I have one Chulane deck, but it's a 1/1 for 1 thematic. Not the same.

This is how I play with varina, with manifest and the two cycling enchantments that exile creatures whenever you cycle and put them back into play and some eldrazi and dank cards like ominscence. Also run mass reamination and targeted spells too so I can cast animate dead on an eldrazi titan quite easily as variana can easily cycle that titan into the grave. ;) She for me is my eldrazi, enchantress zombie commander and as janky as it sounds it's not considering I am running stuff like flash rector to cheat out academy rector early game is possible and I then cast if possible the blue enchantment where whenever a chosen creature type etbs or attacks draw a card and keep drawing gas until I finish off with an enchanted evening and either a card that destroys all enchantments that are not yours or aura theif combo with my plan b being eldrazi beatdown with an soleminity and decree of silence lock down. Works much better than a traditional tribal deck, the only zombies that I have are the lords that bolster my tokens and token generators along with cards that changes creature types making my eldrazi titans also zombies. ;)

No, sorry. That was an error on my part. I've rewatched the raw video with audio. Eric had chosen to counter target creature spell and draw a card. That's on me =(
I think fielf of the dead only triggers for each uniqe land. So at around 13:11 therr would be no trigher from field of the dead.

That's not quite correct. It actually triggers off of any land entering as long as you control seven lands with different names.

This game went EXACTLY as I predicted. Chulane was gonna go out first bc he would reveal a combo. Then Muldrotha, due to her renowned power. And Varina would win because of the lifegain and being overlooked due to the power of Chulane and Muldrotha.
So serious question, I dont think this is the first video ive seen it on but I want to ask:
is it a house rule somewhere that people keep hands of 6? It seems super unlikely that literally every player mulligans twice, and I've seen it before on your videos, but I don't think I've EVER seen it happen in person.
Nope! I was wondering if they had all done this intentionally, but it was just an odd coincidence.
I think the biggest punt was Aidan going to get food chain at sorcery speed. Had he done that at an end step he wouldn’t have seemed like that much of a threat.

I found this decklist with a primer - it is slightly different (View from the Above instead of all unblockable cards). But it has citadel/nexus + a bunch of cheap interaction + nonland boardwipes.

She is pretty gross as a straight zombie commander, but I play Varina as an esper enchantment deck utilising Lich's Mastery/Approach of the Second Sun as an immediate win con late game. I use the "words of" cycle to make my draws into life which draws me more cards which either lets me bounce more stuff with the blue one or discard peoples hands with the black one. I try to fuel my graveyard as fast as I can to fuel Lich's Mastery and drawing with Varina. The deck churns through itself so quickly.

Boy I got little kid excited when Noyan Dar screwed over and killed that Muldrotha deck. Good lord that was beautiful.
I just kept having flash back to the last episode we saw chulane and it would cut to the other guy saying "HUL-EN" progressively louder as the game went on....
Also, if Matt had gone for Inkmoth Nexus, everyone would've ganged up on him; that's what the mere sight of infect does to a table.
So sad to see no red decks but it's all good.

0:55 That Chulane deck could've almost gone infinite just with the starting hand. I'm pretty sure he would've won this if he had waited to play his combo pieces all in one go, rather than one by one.
If matt would play all thats spells played at the end with norran in the field, he could won.

I find it strange that Muldrotha players dont play more cards like necromancy and animate dead, sure he plays one of them but why not both?. That way you can just get a bing thing into the yard and play it for super cheap. Also, seal of removal is something I just love playing. It stops so many combos and it fucks with commanders that wants to attack.

I've thought about this today, Muldrotha and Kethis should've had their colors switched. They'd both be doing something novel for the colors and would offer a new and interesting abzan commander.
Matt force of wills Varina, then bounces everything back to their owner's hands next turn. Seems like a waste of a counterspell.
Varina- player frustrated me at first lol, when I played her it was low cmc zombie aggro. I would overwhelmed the board with zombies and then start saccing them
