Avoid this Cello Staccato Trap!

Happy #CelloTipThursday my dolls 💪🏻🎻! Today's post talks about staccato and a common misconception that can hinder your bow technique. Since staccato means "short," you want to aim for a crisp, clear and articulate sound. However, that doesn't always mean that you have to bounce the bow and have your bow's hair come off the string. A lot of this depends on how fast your tempo is. If your tempo is very fast, you're not going to have enough time to bounce each note evenly and cleanly. The result will be a messy sound that doesn't have technical control.
🌟 Having a very short bow length + a heavy bow arm = short notes with substance!🌟
If you don't have a speedy tempo, experiment with a scrubby bow vs a bouncing bow and see which matches the piece's character and technical needs.

If the bow lifts up from the string I believe its called Spicato. I may be mistaken on the name, but I am sure they're different techniques.

Yes Spiccato. Staccato should be ON the string. Not off.
