I had a quartet teacher, who went to one of Yo-Yo Ma's performances. She said that someone's cell phone rang, and everyone was like *inhale*. Then Yo-Yo Ma played the note the cell phone rang at, and literally made a piece based on that note.

Story about learning Shostakovich cello concerto no.1 in 2 days:
Shostakovich and Rostropovich were close friends, Shostakovich was even a professor in conservatory, where Slava studied. One day Slava read news that Shostakovich wrote a concerto for cello. Rostropovich was really upset 'cause Shostakovich didn't tell him first. Slava even thought that he found a new cellist. But after couple of days, Shostakovich invited Slava to his house to present him his new concerto. Shostakovich sat next to piano and played the concerto for Rostropovich and then asked if he liked it. Slava lost his voice for a minute and then answered that it was amazing. Shostakovich asked him to perform it. Slava once said: "I have never practiced over a 10 hours a day but when I got the score of this concerto I practiced more then 10 hours every day to learn it.
Darth Occlus does slava==rostropovich?
@@KF-zb6gi Yes. His full name is Mstislav. It could be hard to pronounce if you are not Russian. He always said: "Just call me Slava"
The story goes on... They played it together for the first time (with Schosta on the piano) and then celebrated with vodka. They played it a second time through and had vodka again. By the third time, Slava was playing Saint-Saens Cello Concerto and Schosta was playing (once again) his own concerto.
cellopera i thought the third one will consist of them inviting others to drink vodka 😂
Darth Occlus thanks for clarifying

Ooo, great news to share with everyone: I am finally nearly recovered from C19 now :) I have a few tests for my liver in June to check it doesn’t have any long term damage, and my stomach has some irritation (gastritis). But I am managing to get out of bed most days now and I can walk around the house a little further and my chest is much better 🥰
So glad Twoset are here to brighten up my time in isolation! Although I am lucky to have a lovely husband and 2 incredible kids. But I wanted to share my positive news with you all.
I hope everyone else is well and safe xxxx

In high school in the late 80's our music department got to sit in on a masterclass taught by Yo Yo Ma. He was a really nice man, and even when the student wasn't doing well or could tell he didn't practice, he still gave positive compliments and was never mean or really negative. First class all the way.
Yo Yo Ma is the nicest person.
wow, thats amazing
I like how they're quiet, its in their classical blood to be quiet during a performance even if its a recording lol
I wonder when viola performances are gonna come.

Brett, Hyung did NOT say you played it well.

Funfact: one of Yo-Yo Ma's cellos, the Stradivari "Davidov", used to belong to Jacqueline du Pré, former wife of Daniel Barenboim. She recorded Edgar's Cello Concerto, Schumann's Cello Concerto and both of Brahms' Cello Sonatas on that instrument.

Me : Thinks that a 5 string cello is very sacrilegious.
Hyung : Thinks that a 5 string cello is very helpful.
It's a cello piccolo, different instrument
It was written for a 5 string cello so playing on a 5 string cello is 100% legit! It gets played on 4 string cellos with lots of thumb position for the higher passages, because there are not many 5 string cellos about, but it is fiendishly hard to play like that (I know, I've tried.)
Nothing sacrilegious about it unless you’re extremely close-minded and snobby
To me, Jacqueline du pre’s Elgar concerto gives me shivers.
Hyung Suk Bae has a great way to explain what he enjoys about each performance and great eye for details. He has a very clear passion and he's very articulate in transmitting it. Cool!
I clicked on this faster than Ben Lee can ever play "Flight of the Bumblebee"

Guess who’s watching Twoset instead of practicing! ...it’s real ling ling hours, folks.

A little bit disappointed Jacqueline DuPre's Elgar isn't listed
Or anything with Casals or Fournier.
Physics Only yasss I love her . Jackie you will always stay in my heart ♡
Or even Steven Isserlis
DuPre or Sol Gabetta. They are some of my favorite cello players.
That was my exact thought the entire video
My favorite cello piece i think i've heard is DuPres' Elgar Concerto. So glorious and heartfelt
What about Leonard Rose video of Bloch Schelomo with Maazel and Cleveland Orchestra?
In the early 1970s we attended a Milwaukee Symphony concert. Mr. Rostropovich was booked to play a cello concerto. He was ill and the conductor announced that he sent one of his students in his stead. 10% of the audience walked out !! The conductor asked them to please not leave. The would be thrilled. The student came out and was introduced. It was Yo Yo Ma. OMG, it was incredible. We were in the front row center. What a thrill that was.

Oppa swaying and banging his head while listening to classical recordings with flat face truly made my day
My late step-father was designated the official guide of Mstislav Rostropovich while he visited Puerto Rico in, I believe, 1970. He came to Puerto Rico under the auspices of the University of Puerto Rico where my step father was director of finance. Unfortunately I could not go to the concerts because I was in the Army in Southeast Asia at the time. My stepfather talked for years about the experience. I also got to meet famed cellist Gregor Piatigorsky who was a patron of a chess tournament in which I participated. Thanks for the video I think I'll go and listen to some Haydn now.
hyung's comments are so genuine and elaborate! i really appreciate it

When school was in, my friend and I made an entire piece in orchestra called "Cello there." (yes I'm a cellist)
General Cellobi...
Last time I was this early the conductor yelled at me
Normally I skip over "last time I was this early..." posts, but this one made me laugh. 😂
Truls Mørk is Norwegian (b.1961) He plays Domenico Montagnana-cello (Venezia, 1723). He has won several first prizes. once a Grammy. He also teaches at the Music College in Oslo. In 1982 he was the first Scandinavian to win the Tchaikovsky prize in Moscow.
I’ve seen him live here in the U.K. and he was fantastic. 😊
Had the great pleasure to attend a performance of Rostropovich in Vancouver in the 1970's. Magical, deeply moving.
From now on Hyung’s official tWoSet name is Oppa
Such an honourable alias. Just like Sophie Druml who got the honourable alias, sophie oui oui :v I wonder who's next :v
eddy: we're not a roasting channel are we?
brett: no
**reacts to great performances to balance out the roast**
ベランニカ lol
Every cellist I know would agree that Yo-Yo Ma is the best. No arguments from anyone. I went to an open rehearsal at the NY Philharmonic years ago with a friend. In the middle of the rehearsal, Ma practiced a Haydn concerto that he was going to play in that week's concerts. My friend and I left after it and sat in the nearby park for about half an hour. We couldn't stand the thought of any other music diluting that performance.

Surprised that Jaqueline du Pre’s recording of the Elgar cello concerto isn’t included here.
Pranav Viswanathan that’s an epic one!

absolutely, its really one beautiful and she plays so passionate and soulful, but also from a historical pov its what made elgar relevant/popular because before the recording appeared in the 50s (?) he wasn’t really known by a lot of people... so it would’ve been great to have that recording in the video.

Canon in D cello part is the best song ever. All 8 notes are very sacrilegious. Yes. The eight notes.
genesispi95 last year there was one day where I had to perform with my string quartet group for three weddings and each one of them had Canon in D. The third time playing it I did it as expressively and emotionally as I possibly could. The rest of the group was trying so hard not to laugh that. Afterwards the group leader said if you ever do that again you’re fired LOL
OH YES! Thank you for this wonderful programme. I studied cello for a few years and completely immersed myself in cello music-- solo, sonata, concerto, all kinds of chamber music, orchestral music with solos for cello, etc. (Unfortunately I had to sell my cello to cover medical expenses, and that was heartbreaking. I will never be able to afford a cello like that again.) Excellent repertoire in this survey of great cellists! There are a lot of other spectacular cellists, as you would expect. You might want to look at the duet for unaccompanied cello and violin by Kodály.
Here is the story about Rostropovich's rapid learning of a great work:
BBC Proms - Dmitri Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No 1 in E flat major
The concerto was composed in 1959 for Mstislav Rostropovich, who committed it to memory and gave the premiere four days later. Cellists consider it to be one of the most difficult works to play in the orchestral repertoire.
Hyung is very good at speaking and expressing his thoughts! Especially when he was talking about Yo Yo Ma :)
