That cadenza in the Beethoven violin concerto by Hilary is just insane. The continuous sound and gradual increase in intensity and dynamics doesn't sound like a solo violin anymore, it sounds like a Beethoven symphony. As an amateur violinist I can't believe how I didn't think to check out her performance of this piece, given that she's basically the queen of polyphonic violin playing and there's this amazing polyphonic cadenza written by Kreisler (the one she played in this video). It definitely will be a recording I will revisit many times

This perfectly illustrates one of my biggest sorrows when it comes to classical music. There are incredible, mind-blowing videos of live performances out there, but too often when you listen to studio recordings by the same artist, it's like..."well, THAT was...OK." Why can't they record more live concerts?

I must tell you that Maria Callas was the first great opera singer of the XXth Century, but a soprano, not a mezzo, which is what the role of Carmen here, is. She messes up the text here, but being the superb artist she was, she kept her cool. She was the first opera singer to give all the nuances of the text, and even if her voice was not beautiful, she managed to express emotions like no other until her. As a retired opera singer myself, I have had much to learn from her. And I am also greatful to you guys for opening my understanding of violin repertoire!!!
Maria Callas was a soprano. She could sing mezzosopran roles fine enough, but she wasn't a mezzosopran.

On top of her amazing skill, you also have to factor in all the stuff, good and bad, from her private life - her famous temperment, the "feud" with Renata Tibaldi, her affair with Onassis (continuing even while he was with Jackie), being nearly blind onstage. The very definition, good and bad, of a diva.

It's amazing watching the guys watch Hilary's performance with such awe and respect and then realizing that not only have they made several fun videos with her, she also had them perform an encore with her at one of her performances. So wholesome.

The Pavarotti is one of my favourite performances, not only due to the quality of his singing but for the context behind it. The rendition is fantastic, although, in fact, the audio was pre-recorded: he was already suffering from significant health issues at the time, so he refused, fearing he wouldn't be able to perform at his best level. The Olympic organisers eventually convinced him to 'perform' if the audio was recorded a few weeks beforehand.
The opening ceremony at Turin was a part of his farewell tour, but only a few months after the Olympics, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (which was the reason as to why it had been pre recorded) and eventually passed away a year later. That glorious performance of Nessun Dorma was fated to be his last. The lyrics of the final portion of the aria triumphantly declare:
"Tramontate, stelle!
All'alba, vincerò!
Vincerò! Vincerò!"
or in English:
"Fade, you stars!
At dawn, I will win!
I will win! I will win!"
Which really is striking. Although the aria and the opera it comes from speak of completely different things, Pavarotti's final performance in 2006 seems to me like a man thrashing against the disease that would eventually claim his life, searching for one last piece of glory, of magic, and putting his very soul into his singing until he had no more to give. It's enough to make me cry.
Definitively, his greatest trait as an artist is that he literally lived through the characters he sung, that's why his interpretation are so emotional. But his Nessun Norma, as great as it is, is not even his best, specially in the context of your comment. If you truly want to get your heart broken, try his version of "Caruso" (if you haven't of course :p)

I've never really understood TwoSet's praises for Hilary Hahn, but the fact that from 6:15 ish she played the two melodies with two different expressions is absolutely insane: crescendo on the rising higher notes while playing the same volume on the lower notes, or even crazier, crescendo on the rising higher notes while diminuendo on the descending lower notes. I'm a piano player, so I'm not sure whether that's common technique for violin, but it sounds very challenging to do to me. Fan converted.
But what I really love about Hillary Hahn is that she is also so down to earth and such a nice person. Often times when people reach this level they become pretentious and obnoxious. Not her.
She also plays so cleanly - her notes are never slurred together no matter how fast she is playing.
I find her playing always technically flawless but often lacking emotion. But this cadenza was expressive. My favourite Beethoven otherwise is with Christian Ferras.

Yes, she is absolutely amazing. When was that clip from? She is now 81 almost 82 yo. I think this is a rather recent performance, maybe she was more than 75 yo in the clip. Anyhow to be able to play brilliantly after fighting with cancer:
…. in 1990, Argerich was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. After treatment, the cancer went into remission, but it recurred in 1995 and eventually metastasized to her lungs, pancreas, liver, brain, and lymph nodes. Following an experimental treatment at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica pioneered by oncologist Donald Morton, Argerich's cancer went into remission again. I love that you guys have met and worked with Hilary multiple times but you still look at her as if she's a mythical being. If that doesn't show people just how incredible a violinist she is, nothing will. She uses her bow like a legendary samurai.

I'm actually quite impressed at the way Maria Callas managed to recover from that mixing up in the lyrics (for those who don't know the lyrics or don't speak french, she messed up half a sentence...and still managed to fall back on her feet).
It's like, when playing an instrument, you forget a part of 5 or 6 bars, and then manage to fill those bars with some impro, falls perfectly on time with that last bar so you can resume you're playing....WITHOUT ANYONE NOTICING !
I mean...iron-clad professionalism and nerves of tungsten, that's what it takes.

When you're good, you're good.
This tells me you have little experience with opera singers. It is not uncommon for an opera singer to blackout for a part of the text. Keep in mind they do usually not sing from scores at the performance, in a concert performance such as this they do not really see the conductor well, and in a stage performance they are standing quite a bit of a distance behind the orchestra, which makes being on time rather harder. Also there is a lot of text to remember, and often limited time for preparation. The general rule you learn as a singer is: Do not stop. Just sing anything, but do not stop. Of course we also see this with instrumentalists who play without notes. Occasionally they forget how exactly a part goes and then they start improvising.

There's a bit more to the the Yuja Wang short. That was from a performance at Carnegie Hall earlier this year when she played all five of Rachmaninoff's major works for piano and orchestra in a SINGLE EVENING. And also had a different outfit for each piece.

The one video with Hilary playing Beethoven violin concerto, I once opened it, thinking to make it my bgm while I work on my data processing, but end up finishing watching the whole video without touching my data analysis lol To be honest, many of the classical music performances are really worth watching instead of just listening as bgm, as least for the first time, it's a pleasure to the eyes and ears!! I hope more people can discover the beautiful of classical music through Twoset and increase the views of more classical music video!!

For the Piano Gang: Yunchan Lim got 10 million votes in 10 months (actually less than 10) for Rach Piano Concerto #3 at the 2022 Cliburn Competition. Pretty good for an 18 year old who also won the competition. It's incredible how many outstanding muscians live in our world including TwoSet,♥ of course😊
I remember that performance, totally amazing, even the conductor was moved if I remember correctly, that's how good it was.

What about all 12 of Liszt's transcendental etudes? That is a huge recording and accomplishment in and of itself, but playing it in a competition is something else

Don't miss the second act of Tosca. She could ACT as well as sing! When an opera singer speaks, rather than sings, it is like underscoring a boldface. After stabbing the sadiistic Baron Scarpia, who has attempted to rape her, Callas stands over his body and speaks the line "E avanti a lui, tremava tutta Roma!"(""And before him, all Rome trembled.) THe venom in her voice is chilling!

Hilary Hahn‘s part just took my breath away. I almost got jumpscared when Brett stopped the video, I was completely gone in the music. The brilliancy of her whole intonation, sound and phrasing is out of this world.

I think it would be really cool to review the new movie Chevalier about the 1700s French Black violinist and composer Joseph Bologne. Obviously a lot of the review could be about the violin playing, but the movie also talks a lot about his composing and it would be interesting to see what classically trained violinists actually know of his works.
Actually, there was a video of Hilary Hahn playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto which had over 27 million views, but it was deleted for some reason a little while ago. There are still other videos of that same recording though (and the performance is so good!)

The evenness and modulation and control used as a tool to shape the interpretation is incredible. Hilary Hahn is a true master of her instrument. I heard a lot of violin recording great violinist of the last hundred years, but her playing is very unique and fascinating in that sense. There is something extremely focused in her tone.
I always give major props to opera singers. They have to have a relaxed jaw, relaxed face, relaxed neck, all while holding high notes and belting it at the same time. Whenever you see people try to mimic them, they always stress out their neck

I think the wonderful and captivating thing about Hilary is not just the sound, but the way she moves with her phrasing and the way she evidently feels every note she plays.
Hilary is incredible. Her playing is world class, but her personality is even better. Sich a nice person despite her being one of the best violin players is adorable.

I'm a pianist, but to educate you, yes, Maria Callas is an opera singer. She's greek, but lived her life in USA. She did many concert in her life( she met Martin Monroe and a Spanish painter that I forgot his name).I love her, she's amazing!

Listen to Anne Sophie Mutters Mendelssohn from 1983. The way she plays and how the violin sounds is like an opera singer…….she understands this. She flows like a voice and doesn’t rush changes
Her rendition of Mendelssohn is my favourite. The one I listen to is a Deutche Grammaphon recording from 1981 with Berlin Philharmonic. It is stunningly beautiful.

Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma is one of my favorite classical recordings of all time, I highly recommend a listen for anyone who hasn’t and it’s only 3 minutes long.

I love that their talents are being appreciated even in social media. And honestly, watching you two reminds me a lot of my mentor. Not because of the personality, but how you two handle situations in band and performances. He's really optimistic and always has a smile on his face, and when he gets serious, his instrument reveals this beautiful sound enough to make me fall asleep even. We're not an orchestra, but instead a marching band. He decided to quit band and focus on his peace of mind, he deserves it. But I feel this melancholy inside me because I have not yet made him feel proud of me who was his student. I hope one day, I make him the proudest mentor ever. I play the Euphonium and it's really, REALLY hard in my opinion. But it's fine, practice can always improve everyone.
Brett and Eddy has and will always be the musicians I look up to, second to my best mentor ever. I'll miss him, but we gotta respect his decisions. With his resignation, two members of the lower brass section will get a promotion probably to a section leader or ranking. If its ranking, you'll get higher amount of money after playing music in a certain event if you got an invitation to come with them. If its a section leader kind of thing, you'll start to have more responsibilities.
I hope he has a good life ahead of him and enjoy it.

Martha Argerich, at the age of 80, had more than 35 piano concertos “under her fingers” - an incredible achievement.
Lang lang seems to play everything faster then it is usually played.
And Hilary Hahn is great she inflicts so much emotion into everything she plays, same with Pavarotti
Good to see you guys learning a bit more about opera. It has been something of a blind spot for you. The human voice and the violin have much in common, and each tends to take the starring role when it appears. When one steps to the fore, the other has to take the back seat.

I’ve listened to Hilary Hahn play that Beethoven Concerto, that exact video at least once or twice every week for the last two months. It’s amazing! It’s likely my cellists jealousy that Beethoven never wrote a cello concerto!
Also Maria Callas is life goals of expression and beauty! I also think Martha Agrerich is a phenomenon!

Been waiting for TwoSet to feature the video of Hahn doing Beethoven with Detroit. It's really a stunning performance, Hahn's performance is so clean, with such structure and elegance. And Slatkin and Detroit are on point also! Plus, it's very well recorded. I think it's the best performance of the Beethoven VC on CZcams.

I went to a school that had music classes built into the study program, and to reinforce how special the school was all school bells were Turkish March instead of ordinary “ding/briiiing”. So every time I hear it, I feel a ptsd wave crushing into me

If your teachers are telling you to listen to the piece you're studying as it is being sung it's probably excellent advice; all my favourite musicians (e.g. Hahn & Argerich, since they were present here) sound as if they were *narrating* what they're playing, phrasing notes as if they were words, telling a story in music.
What I love about each of these soloist videos is the amount of heart and power that they put in to what they do. It's the kind that reaches to your soul and all you can do is be blown away.
I love how even though Brett and Eddy are good friends with Hilary Hahn now, they never stop being any less hyped by her talent.
I know basically everyone and their mum on youtube have reacted to Dimash but damn I would love to see Twoset react to some of his more classical/opera performances. Although he is not a classical soloist, he very well could have been. He even was offered a place as a opera singer but he wanted to pursue a career in contemporary music. His vocal range is crazy, voice control always perfect and he can sing basically any kind of music. And I read he has a perfect pitch, too. I think if anyone was the Ling Ling of singers, it would be Dimash.

One of the reasons Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma has the 50M views is he'd already made the song famous in 1990 when it was used for the World Cup in Italy: he did a legendary charity concert afterwards with Placido Domingo and José Carreras. That was what caused him to break classical containment, taking quite a lot of other singers with him, for quite a while. Zubin Mehta conducted. I wish I still had the video, because it was insanely entertaining, and I never forgot him saying "adesso siamo proprio riscaldati" at the end of the medley before they started doing encores. Which you'd miss if you didn't watch it live. (It means "we are all properly warmed up now").
