    Sad to see some of the comments are calling out twoset for jealousy. Jealousy is an angry, negative, destructive emotion. What I see in this video is two earnest violinists explaining the differences between the prodigies and their own abilities, and sadness that their own skills- huge as they are- don't measure up to their dreams. I would argue that the gift they are humbly bringing to the world through their videos is its own unique, creative type of prodigy.

    Midori didn't just switch to a different violin. She switched to a violin of a difference size! The violin with which she started was 7/8, but of course the concert master's was full-size.
    Moreover, after a short interval she managed to break the E string on his violin too, and so she had to swap violins again. Worse, on this second occasion she had to play for a while without a shoulder rest, since her violin was still being reassembled after the first break. When the solo part had a couple of bars off, she refitted the shoulder rest herself in an instant, joining back in seamlessly more or less with her back to the audience and walking back to her position.
    When they finished the piece, Bernstein almost collapsed with the stress of it all and utter amazement at how she had taken such mishaps in her stride.

You miss a lot of experiences when you practice 5, 6, 7, 8 hours a day as a child. Even if you're just super passionate about it as a kid, you really miss out on a lot of things. Some people even consider it abuse for children to practice that much. It takes maturity to enjoy a life filled with music, and kids don't really have that (have you worked with children?)

      @reepicheepsfriend Před 3 lety +2

      @@samueljett7807 For you, it would've been missing out on childhood. But maybe not for Hilary. Different people have different priorities, and I know firsthand that sometimes people can find a lot of joy in focusing intensely on one thing even from an early age. My sister was that way with her love for nature. She could study for hours but it just felt like fun to her, and she'd be more bothered by people trying to make her stop. So maybe don't assume things about other people. And by the way I do work with children.

    • @samueljett7807
      @samueljett7807 Před 3 lety

      @@reepicheepsfriend your first part is correct, almost restating what I said. There are few people who are willing to make the sacrifices to become great, and Hilary is one of them. I think it is great to be passionate about something (especially a kid, most of them just want to play Fortnite or AmongUs on their iPad nowadays lol), but I would never let it consume all my kids time, though it did work out for Hilary. I think it is detrimental to be hyper focused on one thing (sports, music, coding, cheerleading, or whatever) and not have variety. "All your eggs in one basket." Its like investing, you need to invest in a variety of things. If you put all you money in one place, it increases risk but also reward. The problem I ran into was I had too many interests and not enough time for them all (too many baskets for my eggs) Often, like you said about your sister, I would focus larger chunks of time on an interest, but I would rotate them. Like one week do electric circuits, the next do coding, the next look into astronomy, then birds... you get the idea.
      Also I am confused about your last statement. What am I assuming exactly? I dont like to assume, because you know what that means...
      Anyway, I never said Hilary hated her childhood, or that no one should be like her. I said that *most kids* would be miserable in that condition, and I stated *my opinion* that it is not worth it.
      The whole reason I made the original comment was to point out it that it takes sacrifice to become great, and for many people (including myself) it would mean giving up many things we loved in childhood.
