Clip the ears off and paint the helms to be bone coloured and I think they would be 100x better (still definitely not something to put on every marine.)
"Cthonian" just means "from underground". Chthonic gods are Hades and the like.
In all fairness I played Space Wolves and theu remain my favorite legion. I fucking hate those helms. It may be a controversial opinion but to me "space viking" is cool and "space furry" isn't.
I think most Space Wolves players are of this opinion but GW just doesn't get it.

Cthonic just means of the Underworld. Cthonic gods in Greek mythology like Hecate Hades Persephone ect live in the Underworld
But in a universe where a planet exists called Cthonia, choosing to call something Cthonian just adds a lot of needless ambiguity.
For example, Martian can mean "relating to war" (after the god Mars). Calling a unit "Martian" in a universe where Mars the planet exists and then not having the Martian unit come from Mars ends up being incredibly confusing.
So while it makes sense, it's a poor choice for clarity of meaning.
