    Hi, Matthew. I really enjoy your videos. This will sound funny, but I'm a drip irrigation gardener, formerly in drought stricken California. I love watching drip videos because you can always learn something new. One thing I noticed, and I did some checking, is it seems that you installed the Backflow preventer before the timer. All my research says it should come after the timer, which in your case (and mine) would mean a preventer attached to each output from the timer. Did I just not see your installation correctly? Anyway, I ordered this BeHive and I'm excited to try it out next year in my garden. Believe it or not, they had it on sale for Prime day, so I saved $50. Thank you again for sharing all your knowledge!

      If you want to spend the money on the extra backflow devices you can, but I would put mine closest to the faucet as possible where the water source originates. The premise is the same as in ground irrigation. For example, the backflow device that a county may require inspection of for an inground system is before the actual timers and irrigation valves on a system. I don’t see a benefit in putting the backflow after the timer.

    • @FrediOlson
      @FrediOlson Před 9 měsíci +1

      Thank you. Maybe the companies are just trying to sell you extra parts. My concern would be that if you have the preventer before the timer, will water not even reach that high because the timer is closing the valves as it finishes its cycle? I guess I'm overthinking it, as I do just about everything. Thanks for your response. Most appreciated!@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 9 měsíci +3

      @@FrediOlson I did some looking around online too and it appears some of the backflow devices for hoses like this are not supposed to be under constant pressure or they could fail, which is why it’s recommended to place it after the timer. So you can place it after the timer if you like, particularly if your water pressure is high enough that it’s causing them to fail on you. I’ll pin this comment so others can see, but I’ve not experienced this issue myself. Result may vary as they say.

    Oh my goodness! This came at the perfect time for me. I live in Oklahoma and spend an hour watering the garden and flower beds. Although I don’t have an extremely large area, It’s overwhelming every day in 100 plus degree heat which even at twilight it’s still humid in the 90’s. I was considering having a sprinkler system put in but my Bermuda grass doesn’t require much water. Thank you so much! Your a life saver. You took the time to give clear and concise instructions unlike many other people putting in drip on CZcams.

    I needed 8 zones plus lawn sprinklers so I hired an irrigation installation company. I have about 4 valve boxes in the ground around the property and a controller on an outside wall. They ran solid black underground and attached brown 1/2" with emitters 12" apart which I like as I know I'm going to get good coverage. The 1/2" was installed very similarly to yours with only a few "dead ends". Since installation 18 months ago, I've made lots of adjustments myself. I have a lot of Rain Bird parts and tubing. I could have laid the tubing myself for each zone but ask an installer just to do the infrastructure and they look at you funny. I find these installers (at least mine) no little about plants and they lay out the tubing in a prescribed grid plan - often getting too close to plants that are going to increase in size. Thus the many adjustments I have made.
    I love your channel!!

    Awesome video Mathew! I have to admit that I am not a stranger when it comes to sprinkle system, I installed it myself on couple of houses but I had a hard time finding the right fittings and my husband and son said that they will never do it again. Of course I will have to convince them to because I can't do it at the moment! Will see, but somehow I need drip irrigation system to water my vegetables and fruits and flowers during the summer! When we moved they threw out some of the tubing and now I have to buy it again! I have a very high pressure here from the county so a pressure regulator is a must for me! I kept your video! Thanks a lot Mathew! Blessings 💕🤗💡

      They have to be a bit difficult because they’re only held on by the barb and pressure from the tube. I’d recommend using gloves, but you may also find sitting the tubing out in the sun or using a hair blow dryer on the end of the tubing helpful to warm it up and make it more pliable before inserting the barbs. The sun definitely helps a lot.

    Thank you for this information. I didn't understand that the 1/4" wouldn't be enough to supply all my garden water needs. I did get the 1/4 inch soaker hose for my raised bed to water my veg since the beds are only 3 1/2' x 12'. Your explanation covered the need for a 1/2" supply to get water up the 27" rise and the 1/2 drip line to water the tomatoes and other inground plants. I have Brugmansia that requires much more water and the split 1/4" to the hydrangea showed what I need for them. Again thanks for this video!

    My irrigation is hooked up to my sprinkler system which runs on a well. I haven’t put any pressure regulators in anywhere. This summer I have had too many leaks, and by that I mean water spraying up about 8 feet in the air. One raised bed completely deteriorated from too much water. Any suggestions on where I should install the pressure regulators-I’m thinking about the pressure regulating couplers? Thank you, Matthew, for being so thorough!💖

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Do you have drip valves or have you converted sprinkler heads to drip heads? At my last home I converted my overhead sprayers in my garden beds to drip with a Rain Bird sprinkler head drip conversion kit. That conversion head had built in pressure regulators at every head. If you don't have any of that scenario, you would need to look at integrating a pressure regulating device someone at the beginning of the system (near to where the water source comes from) to reduce the pressure overall.

    Excellent video, clear and concise. Your legal education serves you well. I have an existing sprinkler system. If I convert some of the sprayers to drip, as you explained in your video from two years ago, do I have to disable all of the other overhead sprayers in the system?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 9 měsíci

      I would cap the other heads in the ZONE, not the system. Or, as I did in my case at my last home, convert every overhead sprayer to drip so you have more volume and pressure overall. If you don’t, you’ll severely limit the amount of pressure and be overwatering areas with sprayers because of how long you need to run the drip.

      I don’t recommend 1/4” drip irrigation in landscape beds at all unless it is in areas where the 1/2” would be difficult to maneuver due to its more limited flexibility. 1/2” is always going to provide the best flow, pressure, and future proofing for expansion. 1/4” is great for raised beds or containers.

      I addressed this in the video. No, but you should unhook the water from your hose source and bring any timers inside to prevent damage.

    Any chance this Bluetooth timer works with the 1st generation hub? Or does it require the new 2nd generation hub?

    Matthew I do have one question, have you experienced any critters chewing on the tubings? Any solutions to this that you are aware of?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 9 měsíci +2

      I've never had that problem. The only critter damaging the tubing is usually me. :) I don't have any recommendation other than an organic repellant like Bonide Repels-All. But, that may not be workable if you have a large area.

    Matthew-
    You’ve sold me on drip irrigation!
    I currently have a sprinkler system with 3 heads per zone. Can I convert all 3 to drip?

      You should convert all heads, or if you’re not converting all heads, cap all other non-converted sprinkler heads in a zone. I’d recommend converting them all for best pressure throughout the system. You would not want to or need to connect the drip tubing between heads. Think of each head as its own mini zone to water a certain area of the flower bed. This is what I did at my prior home with my sprinkler system.

    Can you give me an idea of how much drip can you run off one zone I am just using the 1/2 inch drip with 12 inch emitters holes on brown tubing I have a total of 8 small garden beds three of which are long narrow about 3 ft wide by 90 ft long if you were to combine them 3 together than I have I garden bed that’s about 20ft long x 8ft wide I also have two other beds that are 10 ft long x 7 wide and the last two are 8ft long x 5ft wide the last one is only 10ft long by 2ft wide . Thank you for any response. Also I am running from my home spigot I did by the b hive timer I am waiting for everything to come in again thank you

      The packaging or manufacturers website should mention it. It’ll depend on the PSI as well. I’ve never used the 12” spacing tubing, but I imagine it would be somewhere around 250-350 feet because there are way more emitters than the 18” tubing.

    My on off valves keep leaking. Any idea why?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 2 měsíci +1

      The manual plastic turn valves? If so, they’ve just failed and need replaced. They could also have also been manufactured incorrectly. I’ve had it happen a couple times.
