    my problem is that my free and free pull is pretty good, but when i just do my flutterkick alone, im literally making no movement. my free could be improved drastically by just getting my kick to be faster

    My kick sucks, if I use the board it’s like I’m standing still or even feels like I go backwards. I’m 38, i learned to swim a few years back but I didn’t keep up with it

    I’m not a big fan of beginner swimmers holding the board like that. If you’ve already been swimming for a few years and have a positive body position when swimming, then using a board is fine because your muscle memory will kick in. However, if you are just beginning to swim, it is important to reinforce correct body position. If you hold the board on the ends with your head in between your arms and face in the water, you get a better feel of what your body needs to be doing when you are swimming (chest is down, back end is slightly elevated, like you are swimming downhill - a positive body position). This goes for all kicks on your front (dolphin, breaststroke, flutter). Also, if you’re having difficulty with kicking on your side, use a kickboard or a pull buoy under the flat hand that is extended in front. This helps your body balance and keeps you from pushing down with that arm when you need to breathe, which is the correct body position in the freestyle stroke when you breathe.

    Everytime at my swim practice we would use the kicking board thing, I would always go for 5 seconds then just not go anywhere, they said my kicking form was good... but idk..

    Never liked using the kick board the way you show here, same with the sideways kick. While you are using your core to the sides, you are not getting the side rotation of both shoulders and hips. Also, this tends to put most people with head high and feet low, which does not promote good posture for swimming. I do this with a snorkel so my body is planed out/parallel to the surface of the water. I have the board sideways, and hold it underwater, about the same depth as my hand and arm would be at full extension. I do the 6 beat kick, rotate my shoulders with one arm pushing forward and the other pulling back, and hips rotate also, to mimic as closely as possible how I would swim in full stroke. This particular type of kicking is also more of a scissor kick, compared to the way you show the board kicking in this drill. When in full stroke, the first kick goes just slightly sideways, and the 2/3 kick are with the hips at about 45 degrees, which is more of a scissor kick.

    I get so much cramps from kicking, any suggestions on how to minimize that?

    • @icouldnotplanthis2152
      @icouldnotplanthis2152 Před 6 lety +4

      As far as i know cramps can be caused by many factors.. but its most likely that they are caused by problems with your electrolytes..
      your nerves and muscels basically work because of flows of sodium and chloride so you should check if you either eat too much or not enough salt..
      you should also make sure that you drink enough water before training (isotonic drinks could also benefit your performance because they contain just the right amount of electrolytes)
      ..and yeah i guess thats all i can tell you🤔
      it also might help to strech before training to stimulate bloodflow in you leg muscles..
      i hope that i could help you :)

      I bet hydration is not the case here. You are probably a beginner swimmer and have to start working on your kick (and legs in general) gently, not trying to kick as hard as you can, especially with fins. The goal is to build some endurance and increase flexibility so that you can kick for a long periods of time, no matter how slow you are moving. Only then you'll be able to bring some increased intensity to your workouts without getting hurt.

      When we kick, do we need to keep our keens straight? I saw some videos saying that keens should not be bent, but also some videos saying that when your leg is kicking downwards the knee should be bent a little.

    • @sickoid87
      @sickoid87 Před 6 lety +3

      No one kicks with straight legs. By bending your knee you recruit not only hip flexors and glutes but also very strong quad muscles. Just don’t bend them too much because drag will kill the speed even with increased power.

    In the video your feet is rising to much when kicking with the board, loses efficiency, try to let them always inside the water

    • @OnwardandUpward86
      @OnwardandUpward86 Před 6 lety +3

      Pedro Gueiros your feet should break the surface of the water. Like your heels should come out of the water. She is overkicking on purpose, though.

    • @pedro_cataldi
      @pedro_cataldi Před 6 lety +1

      Stephanie Bates No problem at all about overkicking. I just made the comment because her calfs was rising and THAT is not a good thing because creates more drag when swimming fast, I know for experience (also trying to fix this lol). But thanks for sharing your point of view✌🏼
