Flutter Kick - How to kick during freestyle & the benefits of kicking

- An efficient kick has three important goals. First, it helps to lift your legs up towards the surface, decreasing your drag. Secondly, the kick functions as a stabiliser for your stroke. Your arms and upper body make big movements, causing the rest of the body to move as well. A well-timed kick provides a counter movement that balances your body and keeps you streamlined. The last function of the kick is a constant propulsion which, depending on your rhythm and power, can lead to more speed.

Very well explained! In most other training videos they advise to keep the leg straight all the time. when putting in practice they have the legs slightly bend.
The way he is swimming is Soo satisfying to watch
Start at Hips
Slight bend in knees
Ankles relaxed
Point toes when kicking
Turn feet in slightly
Heels should break water surface with every kick
Keep constant rhythm
Start at hips
Slight bend in the knees

Turn feet in slightly

How do you turn in feet 🧐
@@vividchilling2492 imagine if you were standing in a pigeon-toed stance on the ground.
I tell people that all the time, and it's surprising how much people don't believe me. Kicking during swimming for most people will actually be detrimental to their swim performance. It's only the best swimmers with huge v02 maxes that will be able to generate speed from kicking. For most folks, trying to kick for speed in the water will just gas them out. For them, kicking should only be light and done to maintain buoyancy and counterbalance. Just to update my post, if you've been watching swimming phenom Katie Ledecky, she barely kicks in freestyle. It's been noted many swim analysts.
Yep, I read that a lot re: iron man training. And no matter how much I practice in the pool, flutter kicking alone moves me 0 inches / minute
Somebody forgot to tell Sun Yang
Doesn’t surprise me. My flutter kick is really bad, everyone else I’ve swum with has a faster kick. When I just to the hands for free style I feel far more relaxed. Idk if my time is better but it just feels better not to have those muscles wearing themselves out on nothing.
It’s not that the kick won’t generate speed. It’s that the oxygen impact of kicking isn’t worth the extra speed for most people. especially in any race beyond 100 yards
For the life of me I cannot master the flutter kick. I always end up generating power from the knees. My timing is also terrible. My flutter kicks barely move me in the water. 😂
Good .. clearly... effectively explaining how the legs worked! Thx coach...👍
So to put it briefly
What you are saying is even though the best you can get is upto 10%more speed from a good kick but a inefficient kick can cause far greater reduction in speed due to the drag caused
It makes perfect sense as to why im a breastroker
My freestyle is okay but i find it hard to point my toes and flex my ankle to create the strong propulsion
As an older masters swimmer im desparately trying to get down under 30 seconds for the 50 freestyle but my poor kick is holding me back
Im currently around the 30.8 seconds and cant seem to get any quicker
Looking and listening to your post im sure its my kick
Thank you the best coach I ever heard, video clear everything is good.
A swimming lessons amidst of pandemic is hilarious. I can't believe I'll be doing this on land like a fish gasping for air.
Why? Exercise best thing for immune system. Pools chlorinated. If not 90 year old obese diabetic with one kidney u should be fine.
I got from somewhere my knees should be locked at all times well this makes more sense thank you.
Top swimming video! Thank you
Good video, I love it ,thank you
Thanks!
I found scuba diving certificate course as an appealing way to motivate myself to be fit. The entry to the certificate course requires either 10 mins of floating or 200m of swimming in one go. I did both on a holiday over the weekend but after coming home my left knee is hurting a little and I know why. I am a novice at swimming, did 200m in one go with the elementary backstroke with a flutter kick and kicked from my knees and my right knee isn't really hurting because I've played quiet a bit of football, my right leg is stronger and could take this assault. I am growing to like swimming. It's a hell of an exercise. Great vid.
Same situation, training in swimming so I can do scuba diving. We don't have the option to float for 10min instead tho. I can swim but I struggle with breathing while swimming.
Very good thank you
Flutter kick torques my lower back. Since started swimmimg lower back.
Super good Vid

Nice Swimming lessons Channel 👍 Kudos !
🙂🙂🙂❤️❤️❤️
What does start at hips mean
My kick stop when i do side breath and they sink 😭
Very beautiful, can you put translate arabic in videos
How to turn the direction while doing flutter kicks
you don't?
In the time in your both strock arms you shoud kick your foot 6-8
The side breathing be so difficult 😭
That works better when you can swim a bit fast
Driven from the hips? I would appreciate a break down for whatever they mean.
Don't drive from the knee. Your kick starts at the hips. Straight legs and floppy ankles.
Body position is important. Be a boat, not a bulldozer. The sweet spot for swimmers doing the front crawl is up near the surface. Aim to stay up there like a boat. Don't let lower half of body and legs/feet sink.
@@1houndgal what is a front crawl
Oh
Stand on one leg. Keeping the other leg straight, swing it in front and behind you. Can you feel your butt clench when your leg swings behind you? If you do it long enough, you'll feel the hip flexors at the front getting fatigued as well. That's moving the leg from the hip joint. It's what we do when we walk and run.
Flutter kick uses the same action, but in a smaller way, with a relaxed knee and ankle, and with pointed toes.
