I grew up in the sixties and Jack Jones was kind of alongside Sinatra in his choice of material. In an era of longhair bands singing protest and love songs, Jones was always waiting in the wings with a good, traditional, American standard big band song, be it old or new.
I always loved his voice - so clear and... middle American sounding with his un-New York accent. He pronounces the letter 'r', which most singers avoid. For instance, Sinatra would pronounce 'lovers' as 'lovahs', but not Jack Jones (thank goodness).
I loved The Race is On and always thought it was a weird but clever song. I mean, comparing romance to a horse race is pretty interesting. He "sells" the song perfectly with his clean delivery, perfect pitch and diction.
Now I want to listen to one of his albums.

    I'm warning you...
    Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again
For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
    He's almost here...
    Hey! Little girl
    Better wear something pretty
Something you'd wear to go to the city and
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love
    Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love

I don't care if this song is sexist. I was a kid during this era and it was the best of times. I'm an old beach girl from So Cal and I still love a man opening the door for me. I also like having a scotch and a good cigar. I wish we could go back to those days.

When I lived in the Bay Area, the feminists were complaining to the radio station in San Francisco that this song was VERY sexist towards women and to NOT play this song on-air, believe it or not! Legendary DJ Jim Dunbar disagreed and continued to play this GREAT song on his morning show. Good job, Jim! 😉😎

You could say that the key line is 'don't think because there's a ring on your finger, you needn't try anymore.' If you change some phrases, this song is still applicable. Many a man has lamented that his woman stopped trying to 'woo' him anymore: wearing 'that' dress that he liked so much; the sexy night things being traded for t-shirts and sweat pants. (On the flip side, many a man is just as guilty.).
I'm a female, so women, don't 'freak' when I say this, but I wouldn't call the song 'sexist'; it's merely, for the most part, what was the norm for the time. 1964 was pretty much still like the '50s. The average woman married, had kids and took care of the house. She dressed up to go places: '...better wear something pretty, something you'd wear to go to 'the city'' reference. 'The song is just kind of a reminder to that housewife that she can easily lose her man.
Oh, and is this colorized? This looks the same as a colorized B&W movie. I didn't think there were a lot of shows in color in '64.

Thanks Monica. You get it. (And "norm for the time" was all in all a good norm for men and women in love. Was there and lived it...and have the highest regard and respect for women these many years later.)

This song was long before my time, it sounds good, but one could never get away singing a song like this today. If someone were to even remotely think of writing a song like this nowadays, he'll be shunned by today's society. At the end of the day though, it sends the right message though: wives should be lovers too and so should husband's, way too many relationships lack that. Thanks for uploading the video.
