    A bit off topic, but do you know the expected compression measurement in lbs for the Generac GP6500 model 0059460. I had mine get slightly seized from sitting unused for too long. Just enough to make it impossible to pull the starter rope. I poured some oil into the sparkplug hole and used a breaker bar on the flywheel nut to gently rotate crank back and forth and it promptly freed up. After running it for 10 min or so to clear out the oil I measured compression at only 40 lbs. Seems really low but unit runs smoothly with and without a load. Thoughts?

      @engineeringdept.generatorg1760 Před 6 lety

      Dear Stephany Welshman,
      If you find that the unit is backfiring, or kicking back on the recoil, it will be that the engine has settled in and the Valve clearances need adjusting.
      Your engine a system of moving parts, and moving parts wear. When you adjust a valve, you're not adjusting the valve itself but compensating for that wear, letting the valve open and close as efficiently as possible.
      We have made a video to show you how to adjust the Valve Lash Clearances:
      Setting Valve Lash Clearances on a Portable Gas Generator - www.generatorguru.com/help-me-fix-my-generator-repair-advice/
      You need to adjust your valve lash clearances to:
      Intake: 0.015" (0.381mm)
      Exhaust: 0.015-0.020" (0.4-0.5mm) (Try smallest setting first. If still not running right, change clearance to 0.020".)

    For those wondering what engine you are looking at, it's a knock-off from a 30 year old Honda design. Pretty much the exact engine all of the volume brands are using these days in the 5 - 8,000 watt range gen sets. That would be Powermate, Homelite, Generac, and many others. The only outward difference is going to be the carb, the recoil start, and the exhaust. All of the internals are the same.

      @@codylong2012 .... if you mean clearance for valve adjustment, I use 0.004" on both intake and exhaust. The factory suggests 0.002" but after 25 years doing repairs, I feel that's too tight for how long people wait between services. BTW, that engine has compression release, so you need to set the valves when the piston drops about a half inch below TDC.

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 Před rokem +1

      @@Rab4Web ... I would see if the correct factory spec is out there but that area of 0.004 - 0.006 will probably do in a pinch. I would also go a little past TDC in case there is compression release built into the cam. Just watch through the plug hole till the piston drops a half inch as you pull it over. Turn it over a few times and double check your work before sticking the VC back on. BTW, for those who are not doing this on a regular basis they make a "step gauge" where each feeler starts at one size and goes to the next. IOW, the 0.004 will go to 0.005. The idea is the first step fits and the next won't go. It helps you get the proper feel.

      @@Generatorguru unfortunately the site doesn't list that generator and couldn't find it on the internet, plus when i called the Pure Power Equipment site they are not the same company that made these generators at all and had no information to help so i believe its a Chinese knock of generator with a Honda clone. Developer company is unknown but generator sold at Costco and home depot en mass years ago.
      Eventually i used, (intake 0.003, exhaust at 0.005) which worked , tried many combinations ie;
      (0.006/0.008| 0.010/0.020| 0.005/0.009} but eventually too large snapped the recoil spring or and recoil ropes 4 (heavy duty ) of them in a row on different settings.
      So once this setting was set on the intake and exhaust valves ONLY AT TDC ( {Compressed one valve to set other method WILL NOT WORK ON THIS GENERATOR) puts so much force on the compression release and should be a warning to customers of this type of generator) and then it started and didn't snap the rope or the spring .
      You might want to add that to your site for information on this generator type PP6500PR with a 389 cc engine.

      Dear Aran
      the decompression lever is useful for cold days or if the engine needs a service but on a good day, it should not be necessary, its a bit like using choke on a cold day to get a petrol engine going

      Thank you for contacting Generator Guru!
      We would very much like to help you, but need a bit more information before we can proceed with your request. Please can you tell me the Make and Model of your generator?
      If you are unable to give either the make or model code, you can send us a picture of the generator from the front and the back, and of the part you require. With this our Engineers would be happy to identify it for you.

    You should add a little bit of important info like settings should be done with warm or cold engine. Rather than using a rigid instrument for checking piston height, use a plastic straw, much safer.👍

      Koko, we provide all setting for each unit under the cylinder head parts listing on our website. Please look up your make and model and find the valves (some models the valves are found under the product "Valves" listing.) In the description it has the settings. If your generator is not listed please contact us. www.GeneratorGuru.com

    Champion Power Equipment links to your video, from their technical bulletin page for valve adjustment. For my Champion 100478 generator (intake left, exhaust right) they recommend 0.004 inch (0.1 mm) intake valve clearance and 0.006 inch (0.15 mm) exhaust valve clearance. No need to remove the spark plug, you can just look for when the exhaust valve is pushed down completely - and adjust the intake valve. Same procedure for adjusting the exhaust valve.

      Dear Luis Parra,
      You need to adjust your valve lash clearances to:
      Intake: 0.015" (0.381mm)
      Exhaust: 0.015-0.020" (0.4-0.5mm) (Try smallest setting first. If still not running right, change clearance to 0.020".)

    • @Generatorguru
      @Generatorguru  Před 2 lety

      They can vary depending on the engine. However, we publish all setting on our site under the Make and Model. It is published under the "valves" listing or the "cylinder head parts" listing (depending on how the manufacturer retails the items.) Click our website to get your settings: www.generatorguru.com

      @engineeringdept.generatorg1760 Před 5 lety

      Dear Óscar López,
      If you find that the unit is backfiring, or kicking back on the recoil, it will be that the engine has settled in and the Valve clearances need adjusting.
      Intake: 0.15-0.2 mm (Try smallest setting first. If still not running right, change clearance to 0.2mm.)
      Exhaust: 0.2-0.3 mm (Try smallest setting first. If still not running right, change clearance to 0.3mm.)
      Hope this is of assistance.
