Small Engine Repair Valve Lash Clearance Adjustment on Honda, Predator, or any Engine

  • With that loud of an engine knock it was a long shot to just reset the valve lash clearance. If you watch to the end you will see the engine knocking is coming from the connecting rod on the shaft. Since nobody reads this description I’ll probably get a lot of people saying they knew right off hand that it was the connecting rod. This video isn’t to all those small engine experts. Its for those fix it in your garage type that want to add something to their bag of tricks.
    Keep in mind, do this when the engine is cold.
    This system works for all small engines. Doesn’t matter if you have a Honda, Briggs, Tecumseh, or even everyone’s favorite the Harbor Freight Predator 212. If you remove the pull cord assembly and it doesn’t have a triangle to designate TDC, top dead center (or both valves fully closed), you can pull the spark plug and put a screwdriver in and see when the piston is at TDC, then continue.

    Easiest way to adjust the clearance is by turning the crank until one valve is all the way open/down, then adjust the oposite valve.
    In this example the piston is actually almost ay BDC each time, and no need to be on the correct TDC stroke, and also no chance you are accidentally adjusting during the TDC valve overlap position instead of TDC compression.
    This method also avoids accidentally adjusting the exhaust valve while the decompression cam is acting on the exhaust valve lifter/tappet👍
    Also, try to leave the feeler gauge between the lash gap while tightening the lock nut, if the feeler gauge slips out you're gap is too loose, if it's hard to remove you're gap is too tight.
    If it's just right, the feeler gauge will be held in place but won't be too difficult to remove ince the lock nut is tightened.
    Minor point, the area that got hot shown in the video was the crankshaft journal, not the conrod, but most likely both will be worn, moreso the conrod being it's aluminium.

    • @kbach6524
      @kbach6524 Před 3 měsíci

      Saw in another video that leaving the feeler gauge in can damage it (if the nut tightens down on it and causes indentations).. maybe not in your example, but something to be aware of

    • @simonilett998
      @simonilett998 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@kbach6524 Possibly, but of course you need to hold the adjuster screw firmly to try to avoid it moving when tightening the lock nut.
      Feeler gauges are generally quite hard, so I'd assume there would be more chance of the valve starting to open before indenting the feeler gauge.

    Something to be aware of... all threads have back lash.. (slop) as you found out.
    Set your lock nut on top to be in slight firm contact with your bottom nut when you feeler gauge.
    Both those male threads to nuts fight each other on tightening and yes male threads DO flex as well....

    There are two TDC (top dead center) on 4-cycle engines. I think you need to be sure it's TDC on the compression stroke when adjusting valves. This makes a difference on certain engines I was told. I'm by no means an expert on small engines but found this out the hard way.

    • @kevinrhodes9082
      @kevinrhodes9082 Před 4 lety +7

      That's true, but it's easy to tell which stroke you are on if you can see the rockers/valves. TDC compression, both valves are closed. TDC exhaust, the exhaust valve is open.

    Observe the inlet valve go down.

    Dont confuse the feeler guages metric mm or thousands of a inch.

I did valve adjustment and found intake rocker arm was very loose and could rotate it without even loosening nut and exhaust valve was too tight. Did the adjustment and now it feels better when pulling cord but still won’t start. Cleaned carb, fresh gas, new spark plug and gets spark, air filter is good, with fresh gas. Any other suggestions? Doesn’t start with starter fluid either. I do get some pops when attempting to start like some backfire.

    I've used this sprayer several times now on brick pavers, a wood deck, patio, and a driveway. czcams.com/users/postUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX It has performed as expected on all surfaces. For larger areas like the decks and patios, I think I will be looking into a surface cleaner attachment to speed up the job, or at least make it a little easier. Hose and sprayer connections are tool-less, tight, and quick. I used the yellow nozzle on the concrete/brick surfaces, and the pressure was adequate for cleaning those surfaces.I am disappointed that these units are still being shipped with a nozzle storage holder that allows them to vibrate out of the holder way too easily and become lost, but I don't want to knock off a star for that reason. The functional part of the washer works very well, so I would recommend this product.

    • @alanhowarth2801
      @alanhowarth2801 Před rokem

      Hi. The clearance is bigger because the valve and the stem are subject to the much higher temps of the exhaust gasses. Therefore apt to expand more over it's length. This is true for every internal combustion engine
