    • @SpectatorAlius
      @SpectatorAlius Před 5 lety +57

That describes a lot of the exchanges, yes. But it is still disappointing how few of the "normal people" *can* get the proof right when they prove the globe Earth.
I find it interesting, for example, how many people refer to sunrises and sunsets as proof, without realizing what this 'proof' assumes. There is a reason, after all, that Ptolemy did not include sunrises and sunsets in his list of globe Earth proofs known to the Ancient Greeks.

    • @Skelath
      @Skelath Před 5 lety +70

@@SpectatorAlius you can say the same for flat earthers like M Benz saying he CZcamsd, Googled, and went to a Library and couldn't find any proof that rain could be so lite weight it floats in the sky all because he desperately wants to prove that clouds aren't made of water and in order for that to be true then steam from boiling kettles / jugs can't exist, steam from a hot shower can't exist, the water level in my tropical aquariums can't be dropping but it does, humidity itself can't exist, my jacket getting wet on a foggy day when it isn't raining can't exist, yet it all exists. If tiny microscopic water droplets cannot float in the air then how can a kite float in the air, how can a "Plane" fly in the air?!

    • @SpectatorAlius
      @SpectatorAlius Před 5 lety +38

@@Skelath M Benz is pretty incredible, alright. But his subs are dropping too.
His confusion about rain is an example of a common failure to understand: gravity is not the force itself, the force is given by the Universal Law of Gravitation. And that shows that water droplets 'feel' only a very small force from gravity, so their motion is easily dominated by air currents, even by Brownian motion.
But even that is not the worst of it: most of these people have no idea what a 'force' is! If you try to explain it via Newton's Laws or as a vector, they have no idea what you are talking about, their eyes glaze over and they go back to nonsense.

Didn't you know that all camera manufacturers have to build an altitude measuring device into their camera's along with a radio transmitter and receiver.
When the camera reaches a certain altitude, the camera will switch over, and send all camera feeds to a satellite, where an operator will make sure that the feed is doctored to make it look like the earth is round (Which we know it is not), and then send the feed back to the camera, that then records or relays the video feed back to the operator, totally fooling him into seeing a round earth.

I'm an amateur astronomer, and do a lot of public outreach events. When in more populated areas where we host events, it's not uncommon for some flat Earthers or planet deniers to wander up and start arguing with us. Sometimes they can even be aggressive, accusing us of spreading propaganda or insisting we tell them who we work for.
My best story is one guy who was asking me how I can believe in planets other than earth. He said any pictures other than the doctored Nasa ones of planets just show an indistinguishable blob. I pointed my telescope at Jupiter and told him he could have a look. Seeing was pretty good and we could see 7 bands and the red spot. If you look long enough you could even see the rotation of the planet since Jupiter as a super fast rotation. The guy refused to look, just flat out refused. I told him he could see with his own eyes and draw his own conclusions instead of just repeating whatever he read online. He wouldn't look and became agitated. He eventually left, but I could believe that he wouldn't at least look. He was 100% unwilling to have a discussion or even use his own eyes to verify or disprove his opinion.

No, it's called logic. Here, 'science" this away...I'll wait...
Here...for the exceptionally thick...here is some real science, physics,
and good old-fashioned logic!!! Stick this in your globe and smoke it!
I will attach a picture even for more clarity.
      i.stack.imgur.com/ge9sN.png
      Now,
these are the terms we will use (listed/outlined on the diagram) so as
to completely comply with "known sciences of air flight" and the
terminology actually used by pilots all over the earth, so you cannot
say I am saying something/referencing something incorrectly.
      Now
when you take off in an aircraft from the flat level ground, and you
want to gain altitude after becoming airborne, you have absolutely no
other option but to adjust the "pitch" of the craft so as to point the
nose of the craft at an angle to whatever desired degree/angle/speed you
wish until the craft reached whatever desired altitude ( altitude
representing the distance measured from the craft to the flat, level,
ground in whatever measured unit you use/speak in) to achieve this
      the result...physics MANDATES it.
Now when you reach said altitude,
you will have to readjust the pitch of the plane to bring the fuselage
to a level orientation (would be measured at 0 degrees pitch or
completely level in relation to the flat surface of the
earth...following me? Don't say no or you have got to be extremely
      stupid...)
Now once you are flying along at the desired altitude,
and your craft has leveled off and is now maintaining altitude only..as
      in NOT climbing/gaining altitude, OR descending/losing altitude...you
cannot maintain 0 degrees pitch in cruising altitude flight and stay at
that same altitude continuously, and the altitude makes no difference
whether 10,000 ft or 10 ft.
      So as the supposedly
"known/measured/calculatable curvature" of a global earth model would
MANDATE according to..."science"...the continually curving earth surface
would soon start to descend/drop/curve downward before you and quite
noticeably (as the curve calculates to something like 8" per mile of
drop over distance in any direction on a ball/sphere earth) in your direction
of flight no matter where on earth you flew.
      You would reach a point
where you were slowly gaining altitude and thus "climbing out of the atmosphere and start proceeding into space" as a result of the ground "falling
away" in a "curving downward angle" before your direction of flight.
      Physics mandates
without argument that as that occurred you would be forced to adjust
the pitch of the craft at a downward attitude (point the nose down or
descend/lose altitude to maintain 10k ft or whatever altitude you flew)
or you would WIND UP LEAVING THE EARTH AND ENTERING THE OUTER ATMOSPHERE
SLOWLY ASCENDING CONTINUALLY UPWARD INTO SPACE.
      You absolutely
cannot circumvent a sphere or globe of any size in any direction
whatsoever in any type of aircraft without using a curved flight path in
relation to maintaining a constant altitude over thousands of linear
miles in distance as you traverse the surface of the GLOBE MODEL.
Now, where is that wrong? How does that inarguable representation of physics in play make me the idiot and you smart?
Now you look stupid believing in a globe when you really think about it don't you? Welcome to reality!!!!

      1. If you run around in a circle, you have to run faster in order to complete a bigger circle than a smaller circle in the same amount of time. According to the flat earth map in order for the northern hemisphere to be cold during winter the sun has to be farther away from the north pole during the winter time than in the summer time. So it goes around in a bigger circle when the north pole is going through winter but yet it completes a circle in the same amount of time. So what is speeding the sun up during the transition from summer to winter and what is slowing it down during the transition from winter to summer in the northern hemisphere? Can you explain? A round earth easily explains it because earth rotates at the same speed and the sun is stationary at the center of our solar system.
      2. The Coriolis Effect can be observed in hurricanes and draining water. They rotate in counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. This can be explained by a round earth because the part of the earth along the equator has the highest tangential speed as the earth rotates. If the earth is flat, hurricanes and draining water can only rotate in one direction everywhere on earth.
      3. The sun never sets in Antarctica during the Antarctic summer. This directly contradicts the flat earth map. A round earth explains this because the south pole is tilted towards the sun during the Antarctic summer.
      4. When it is day time in America, it is night time China. This can be explained by a round earth. If the earth is flat, it would be day time or night time everywhere on earth at the same time.
      5. Star constellation in the night sky are different in the northern hemisphere than in the southern hemisphere. This also can be explained by a round earth.
All these pieces of evidence together prove that the earth is round I have yet to see multiple pieces of evidence offered by flat earthers that point to a flat earth.

All that is needed to calculate a triangle is either two sides and one angle, or two angles and one side.
We know two angles and one side, therefore we can verify if the flat or round model is correct especially since we can use multiple locations.
What’s most ironic is flat earthers using either the validity or invalidity of either example to justify the earth is flat. Can’t have it both ways.
On an equinox, at Solar noon, on the equator, the sun is directly above (90 degrees elevation).
At any latitude, the elevation to the sun is 90 minus the latitude.
Try a simple test on the equinoxes. The angle between vertical down to the sun at solar noon is equal to your latitude.
    That’s valid at all latitudes.
Only on a spherical earth is that possible.
For example, at 30 degrees latitude, the angle from the horizon to the sun on an equinox is 60 degrees.
At 45 degrees latitude, the angle from horizon to sun is 45 degrees.
However, comparing the two triangle yields different distances to the sun. Therefore the flat earth model is invalid.

    • @yestervue4697
      @yestervue4697 Před 3 lety +2

Yep...here lemme prove that very thing!

I imagine a lot of flat earthers go through a variation of this process:
    1) A poor quality of education, either at school or home-schooled, fails to properly explain the mathematical and physics principles that govern processes like gravity and evolution
    2) They are left dissatisfied with concepts that feel half-baked or don't make sense
    3) This leaves them susceptible when they find communities online who feel the way they do and have constructed their own explanations for why it doesn't make sense (I.e. it's a conspiracy)
    4) They start to get involved in a community that gives them validation and makes them feel smart and accepted
    5) They become emotionally invested in this community, making it a part of their core identity. Much like religion, flat Earth becomes personal to them, and attacking that belief elicits the same response as attacking someone's religion
    6) They become entrenched in an echo chamber and they will fight to defend their belief to the death. Any genuine attempt to seek "the truth" is now gone, now they seek only to defend their identity. Hence why no matter what experiments you conduct or proof you provide, it will be stubbornly waved of as fake

@HotSocKs 89 That's a lot of assumptions about my level of education and knowledge that you have just pulled out of thin air to support your point. You effectively just created a strawman to fit with your narrative.
Moreover, it is not required to have a complete understanding of all maths and physics to realise that a globe Earth makes more sense than a flat one, or at the very least to understand why the flat Earth model makes no sense. For example, some flat Earth models suggest that "gravity" is actually the Earth accelerating upwards at a constant rate; a basic middle-school level of education will explain why that would be impossible.
If nothing else, then a simple understanding of how the scientific community operates will tell you that every theory proposed must undergo a hugely rigorous process before it becomes officially accepted by the community. You learn the scientific method at school and how to observe, measure and draw conclusions, but every flat Earth or creationist "proof" I've seen fails to grasp this properly and are usually fundamentally flawed in some way.
Hence, I am able to come to the conclusion that it is vastly more likely that the Earth is indeed a globe, and not a disc. Note I say "likely", not "definite", because you're right: I am not an expert on everything and there are lots of things I don't fully understand.

I don't know where the fulcrum would be, the dynamics of rockets in a vacuum is, surprisingly, something I don't encounter in my day to day life.
I already explained that a complete knowledge of everything isn't required to understand why globe earth makes more sense than a flat one. This is a common debate tactic among flat earthers and conspiracy theorists: ask highly specific questions until the other person doesn't know, then claim victory as if that somehow proves their claim.
My lack of knowledge about rockets in space does not counter-balance the massive flaws in flat Earth theory that I *can* identify.

To this day, FlatEarthers have no working models.
They can’t make a flat earth model explain both night & day and the 4 seasons at the same time.
And they need one explaining both phenomena at the same time, because everything is happening at the same time.
The globe Earth model explains both seasons and night & day beautifully. It also accounts for the sky rotating in different directions at both poles. Something the Flat Earth’s model can’t even do.
That’s how flawed and broken FlatEarth theory is and how mentally unstable it’s followers are.

3 months ago I achieved the impossible and convinced a flat earther that the Earth is indeed, not flat. It took 3 days, 7 hours, 25 minutes, and 37 seconds. I may have lost 50% of my brain cells in the process, but at least I know that it ain't impossible. My secret? Be even more stubborn than them.

One of the biggest ironies of modern-day flat earthers is that they use technology (smartphones, the internet, WiFi, GPS, CZcams) that our understanding of physics has afforded us, while simultaneously attempting to discredit it.
Therefore, I think it’s only fair that flat earthers be relegated to spreading their scientific illiteracy via homing pigeons, smoke signals, or two cans and a string.

maverickdallas100 - Precisely. The four fundamental forces (interactions) of nature are irreconcilable with a flat, stationary earth. It is quite literally _physically impossible_ for the earth to be flat.
But I digress. Nobody ever accused flat earthers of wielding a robust knowledge of physics.

Oh I agree. I'm very concerned that because we've built computers to be too easy and too ubiquitous, they have given the proverbial "village idiot" a powerful soap box from which to gather and unite with other village idiots all around the globe. I am convinced this will have serious repercussions.
