- Our new SUV was too high for our dogs to climb or jump into. We needed a vehicle ramp for dogs, and I found a ramp that would fit into the storage compartment of our 2022 Honda Pilot: the 72" Gen7Pets Natural Step Ramp for Vehicles was a perfect fit. (Amazon Associate link below)
The dogs initially were afraid to use the ramp. This video shows you how we trained them to go up and down.

Love this seemly simple yet effective training technique; I will remember this if/when I need it.
Thanks David! It worked for us so I wanted to share it. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Awesome vid and such a clever idea on how you trained the pups to go up the ramp; thanks for sharing!
@JR007 - Thanks for the nice comments! When we first got the ramp I thought they would go up, no problem. Once treats were involved and we made a game of it they really enjoyed the training.
Glue carpet on the ramp!
Ron, that's brilliant! Going to give that a try… Thanks for commenting and watching! 😁
I'm going to try your method... My 15 year old Black Lab/Staff mix who also has a fully torn ACL has a lot of trouble getting in and out of my truck. Now if I could only figure out some way to make the front passenger seat larger and higher so he'd lay down when we're out for a drive... But he likes to look out the front window so wants to stand the entire time - and I don't hink he likes doing that. He used to love going for truck rides, but these last couple of years he's just not been into it.
Will, it's got to be frustrating for the dogs as well. I wish ours would lay down in the back when I drive but they insist on sitting or standing so they can see everything. Maybe the ramp will make it easier for your dog… Have you considered putting a dog bed on the seat to encourage them to lay down?
@@MikeFyxdt He barely fits on the seat and when I tried to put a dog bed on there (which is larger than the seat bottom) he ends up steping where there is no support under the bed. I tried using pillows, but he just stands on each side of the pillow and won't lay down on it. He's a bit of a dufus. LOL
My back seats fold up and has a flat fold out floor - he won't even lay down on that - or even stand on it... He immediately tries to jump into the front, usually falling on the centre console as he tries.
I've considered making a platform that rests one side on the seat and the other end with legs into the footwell, but haven't managed to think through the logistics of getting something like that to fit with the ability to easily get it in and out.
@@willmorton6800 Lol, the things we do for our pups! 😁 One of my dogs will lay down, but the other has to see everything that's going on. But when you crack the windows, they are both up with their noses in the air. I'm sure your dog still enjoys the rides, and I hope you find a solution that's easy and safe for you both!
Great video, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Loved the video
Glad to hear it! 😁
Cool training method.
Thanks! I hope this video helps others. 😁
