So in neighboring Lithuania, they also celebrate "Rasos", midsummers. They also search for the fern flower. But it's well understood that searching the fern flower is an excuse for young couples to elope to the woods, for some, um, "alone time".

It's Rasa. Rasos is the genitive form. For instance, Rasos Naktis is Rasa Night (or Summer Solstice Night). Rasos Šventė is Rasa Holiday/Festival. You would never simply say Rasos - to use that declension it must be modifying another noun. But yes, Jani and Rasa are very similar.

    • @cikuuzis

Exactly. In Latvia, "looking for a fern flower" on a midsummer night is also not about wish-granting but a euphemism for copulation because there is no such thing as a flowering fern.

Don't know much about Latvia...it's next to Russia and is a Baltic country...but..if they like beer and cheese they would fit right in with Wisconsin 😊. Interesting concept that music echoed nature traditionally because nature was there, etc. I tend to think music still echoes nature but in many more forms because new forms have been created. Yesterday...drums. Today..orchestras. Just thinking out loud. This was a fun song. I need to attend that festival...lots of benefits! 😁

There is actually a traditional Latvian homestead in Wisconsin that is owned by a collective of Latvian pagans/Dievturi, so you're spot on! They maintain the house and use it for holidays and celebrations but rent out the farmland. I think to Amish. I'm a Lithuanian pagan/ Romuva and was fortunate to have been invited there as a guest once.

I always get tingles up my spine at the point when they cascade out of monody into a-capella harmony.
The polytheistic cultures of the eastern Baltic, which persisted into the 12th century before being swamped by christianity, were pretty special; proto-democratic and with gender equality, and a non-exploitative attitude to the nature around them. They were the diametric opposite of the strongly hierarchical and feudalistic Christian societies to the south and west. There has been a revival of that pre-christian tradition in recent years and I think that is a commendable thing.

    As a Latvian -American
Raganu is the Latvian word for Witch, Ragana is sigular (Witch) and u acts like 's in English, Nakts = Night. Thus the title is Witch's Night. Which in Latvia isn't Halloween but the Summer Solstice (June 21st) Summer Solstice is to this day a very proud Pagan celebration in Latvia. It's 3 day Federal Holiday! Latvians go wild during this Festival. The Victory of Light over Darkness. Considering, Latvia is very far Northern Europe and Cold the rest of the year. Sun Worship was very popular to Pagan Ancestry and is to this day to some extent. :)
Folklore tells us that on the Summer Solstice the Witches, Sorcerers, and Werewolves Fly on that night like no other and hold their Witches Sabbath's Celebrations too!
Latvia and our Sister Nations of Lithuania and to some extent Estonia were the collectively know as Baltic Tribes. Were the very last Europeans forced to convert to Christianity from Paganism. In the time period of late 1200s to the 1600s. This was known as Baltic Crusade, when the Church sent in their armies to convert us or put us to the Sword. We revolted for the most part. The Crusades ended in a stalemate in 1630s when a truce was drawn up. Thus, the Baltic Tribes were never really 'converted.' Thus, to this day. Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonians remain a curious mix of Pagan and Modern beliefs. They blend together.
In Latvian. Witches were NOT evil. They are supernatural creatures, yes. But also midwives, herbalists, healers. And they can also curse your cattle and sheep and give you warts or winky falls off. If you piss them off! In England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland you call them "The Cunning Folk" Latvia had village Cunning Folk / Witches in rural villages commonly up to early 1900s.
I hope this helps your understanding of the song! They are singing about Mid-Summer Night when the Witches (Raganas) Fly!!
PS.. Throughout European Folklore, Myths and Legends of old. Red hair was often a sign of a Witch and associated with witchcraft. Believe it or not. No wonder you were drawn to this song, Beth. :) Just kidding, of course. But the belief was real and strong for the longest time.

Anyway this music is so bond to a specific region and on the other hand if I close my eyes it can be native americans dancing around the fire or caribbean tribes celebrating on the beaches or maybe carnival in brazil or south-east asians in the monsun rain forrest...

A typical son of Jāņi is this one: czcams.com/video/A2r-uspx6LM/video.html , where different folk groups are singing about the oak tree. All musicians, except the firth group, are dressed in folk costumes (though, in case of kids, it is simply the cheapest version possible), and one more detail: men always have crowns oak leaves, but women - of flowers, and all women, even the married ones, are allowed to wear hair uncovered and loose (though married women did not cover their hear until high middle ages or so).
