    How many suits should I own? It's a question I get ALL the time. And it's a great question. Like many menswear-related questions, there is no definitive answer or exact science to determining how many suits you really need. However, a good suit is one of those menswear and men's style essentials that you should have no matter who you are. In an attempt to answer the "how many suits should I own" question, I've created four categories of men--all the way from the guy who never wears a suit to the guy who loves suits and likes to dress dapper. See below.
    0:00 - How Many Suits Do You Need?
    0:59 - The Guy Who Never Wears A Suit
    1:58 - The Occasional Suit Wearer
    3:15 - Blinkist Ad
    4:51 - The Guy Who Wears A Suit To Work
    6:51 - The Men’s Style Fanatic
    7:59 - Wrap Up
    For each of these types of guys, I've determined the number of suits he should own as well as suggested styling details for things like suit jacket lapels, suit pocket style, number of buttons, vents and so on. It doesn't matter whether they're off the rack suits, made to measure suits, custom suits, or bespoke suits--buy the best suits you can to match your lifestyle and your budget.

The problem is that I didn't know where to start. THIS video has been a HUGE stress reliever, as I now have a clear starting point. Thanks, man!

    I agree with most of this advice. I'd say it's also geographically specific. I'm in a part of the US that is super casual. Like, a collared shirt and dark denim is "dressy" here. When selling suits to clients, I usually recommend charcoal and navy as the first 2 suits anyone should own. You nailed it with this video!

    NOTE: Good advice my friend. I have a collection of 50 different custom 2 & 3 piece suits. (from sheer to Tweed). So after my first 4 suits, everything else is vintage by decade (from 1920 to 2010). Also buy suits that fit your climate. I live/work in Houston. Usually 90+ Degree temp. So I only have 1 Tweed suit (LOL!) the rest are VERY light materials. CHEERS!

    Hey Brian, I love the presentation here and the advice that you just gave. Though this comment is pretty late after you post this video, I want to say that this advice is truly helpful for me. Because you don't generalize people and instead you divide them into different categories.
    I'm a 24 year old guy who just starting to enter workforce and although my workplace does not require suit, but I would love to dress up nicely every now and then. So I'm in occasionaly suit wearer category. I only have black suit since suit culture is not very booming and necessary in my country, but now I'm considering to get navy & charcoal gray suits.
    This comment is pretty long, but when you read it I hope I can convey my message that this video is immensely helpful and you just gained a new subscriber. 😊

    Nice video, but for the guy has to wear a suit to work, I would go with pinstripe or two vs window pane. As for a khaki suit, by definition, it's already casual, so I would prefer one that's a little dressier with flap pockets because it's crisper look if you need to go to a summer event and need to step your game up. A seersucker is also a good choice for summer 👌

    I'm definitely number 4, I don't have to wear suits to work (I work in software which is fairly casual. Professional, but casual) but I absolutely love to wear suits albeit with no tie as that would be a bit too much for my work environment. I haven't counted my suits in awhile but I think I have around 30. My dream is to have 100+ just like Cary Grant did who built one of those dry cleaner like hanging, motorized rack machines into this closet which ran through the attic in his California house so he could simply stand there and have the suit move by until he found one he liked. :) One day I'll have this. :D

I bought a used medium grey Super 150's glen check suit for $60 I love, and investing in a nice charcoal suit soon for those more formal events. However, I find myself investing into sport coats more often than suits, as they usually fit my style more due to not needing to wear a suit very often, but can easily dress them up

    I've got some questions if you don't mind.
    1) What do you think of the navy herring pattern suit?
    2) Is buying a suit from the discount outlet a good idea? (Off 5th ave.)
    The suit I'm looking at buying, if it's still on the rack this week, which it's been in the past 2 week window, is a navy herring.
    It's like $350.00 marked down from supposedly $1,300.
    The brand is called something like Hackberry along that line.
    3) Do you know anything about this brand or a brand with a similar name and would you recommend it?
    4) Also, do you know or think the prices at discount outlets are jus' marked up that high by the retailer jus' to make the customer think their getting a good deal?
    5) What's your take on suits at Men's Wearhouse?

I don’t work in an office though and would only wear it for date night or parties etc. or just because I feel like it. Trying to pick my first colour but do you think I should skip the recommended grey or blue suit as I don’t work in an office?

    Hi Brian, great video. I was wondering what your thoughts are on where a tux would fall into these categories. I would think that the non-suit wearer would probably not have one, but would you say occasional suit wearers and guys who wear suits to work should have at least one tux in addition to their suits?

    • @michaelb7862
      @michaelb7862 Před rokem

      I’ve never worn a tux and I’ve been wearing suits for over a decade and work in a white collar profession with a stereotypical conservative outset. Alas, I’ve not been to award nights, the opera, or other black tie events. The most formal events I’ve been to are Cocktail Dress code for private viewings of art gallery events. I have come to the conclusion that formality is heavily influenced by the culture and changes depending on where one lives, we tend to be more relaxed in places like Australia

  • @a.m.tschernyschew5004

    In my opinion the amount of suits needed is like 15. I'll explain: 5 warm tweed ones in different pleasant colours (gray, brown, dark green or textured). The next ones are 5 regular wool fabric suits (black, navy, beige, light gray and textured one). And another 5 are extremely light linen ones for summer (light colours, striped, textured). Warmest greetings from Ukraine to the dapper looking gentlemen!

    Interesting video! How essential in your opinion is a suit with patch pockets? I know the 'conservative' way is with flap pockets, which in my opinion can look weird in some suits. Keep inspiring us!

    • @hespokestyle
      @hespokestyle  Před 4 lety

      Thanks, George. Depends on you. Depends on the fabric. Patch pockets are always more casual. So if the fabric is such that you think you would wear the jacket as a separate--hopsack, for example--I would do patch pockets. As I say at the end, it's really up to you and your preferences. These are just my recommendations.

    I haven't interacted with your channel in years. Last time I was at the beginning of transitioning (retiring) from Active duty to graduating college and changing careers. Now several years have past and I'm once again looking to increase my "bespoke-ness". I have an opportunity in commercial banking, and will once again be increasing my suit collection and frequency of wear. I was a little critical (in a constructive way) in the past, but I knew exactly who I needed to seek out for apparel! My question is, how do you feel by online custom suit shops like Indochino? Do they make good products that are worth the money you spend, are they as good of a value as they seem? Are they close to a real custom fit bespoke shop? I probably need 2 more suits to get started. I don't want to spend a fortune, although I will hopefully increase the collection soon after getting the job.
