      Actually it's the opposite. New games are like fabric, snip a thread and they fall apart. Classic Pokémon though was SO restricted in what you could fit into one little cartridge with the processing power of a gameboy a majority of their development went into compressing and optimizing the game. That's why you will almost NEVER see bugs in casual play, the only bugs you'll find have to be done intentionally and completely shatter the game. They aren't coded like fabric, they're coded like stone.

      It's less a matter of "discovery" at this point and more a matter of ripping the game open, figuring out what ram values do certain things, and reverse-engineering actions to correlate to the exact right sequence of values for what you want to achieve. Turns out it's a lot easier to figure out the most optimally-glitchy name when you can just pull up a ram viewer and see how it effects rng, haha.

Had no idea they got a complete new manipulation/glitch system lined up like this where you don't have to do that anymore. once you understand the fundamentals of the gameboy, anything is possible

    • @Sykale
      @Sykale Před 2 lety +172

      The thing about the Gameboy is that it's really weak, probably much weaker than you realize. Because of this, developing actually good games for the Gameboy was hard (not that it's not hard otherwise but yeah), and the devs need to make a lot of optimizations to make the game work.
      Some of these optimizations are perfectly harmless, but some aren't. One thing for example is in order to conserve memory if a value is small enough you can usually store another value in the same space, and you can use the same spot for different values in some places in the game.
      That means that if you know where things are stored (which with decompilers and emulators that show how the memory is allocated) you can manipulate certain places in memory to have values they don't normally have, and cause unintended behaviour in the game.
      Obviously I don't know what exactly was used in this run, as I didn't dig into it, but I can assume some of these and other things like RNG manipulation (that happens because the Gameboy isn't really random but gets values from the console's time variable, which starts when you boot the console. If you boot a console and do the exact same things, you will get the same results. I know Speezy explains but it is related here soo) and other stuff I don't know about have occurred.
      It's incredible.

      The yolo ball thing reminds me of holding A+up or B+down when throwing a ball. Allegedly it guarantees capture, and all the times it doesn't work are because you didn't time it right. It's all BS though, and the tricks here only work because it's coming off a fresh reboot which resets the RNG and then you do button presses that aren't too hard to reproduce perfectly, getting the RNG to spit out the numbers you want -- Spearow on this tile, and then a successful full-health capture.
      Holding buttons randomly like A+up when tossing the ball might affect the RNG, but you'll never know the difference unless you use savestates and change what you press and when. So for normal gameplay it's like blowing on the dice and giving them a couple extra shakes before rolling them.
