My channel generally focuses on a more casual side of speedruns. With these videos I want to show off cool speedruns, explain how they work, and entertain. Hopefully you enjoy the content and maybe even take up speedrunning yourself, because it is truly a lot of fun!
Today we are doing the 50 Lives speedrun in Mario Mario. This is where you go into a new file on the Endless Challenge mode, and get as many 1-ups as possible until you reach 50 total. It seems like a simple speedrun but was actually one of the most frustrating times of my life. Gotta love it.

The irony of this run is hilarious.
You skip any levels that look actually well designed, and constantly hope for enemy spam and terrible design.
Maybe the people who make those levels are actually trying to make it easier for anyone who tries this run. They might actually be geniuses.
I remember when i played this game the levels I made always had 3 1 ups for anyone who ever bothered to finish them

When I calculated the average time spent per life (not including lost/regained ones) it took you about 45 seconds per life. I don't know exactly how long the transition after beating a level is, but with your pace it probably would have been worth it to just play levels with a clear time under 20 or 15 seconds. Even if you only get one life from it it should still be faster, especially if you get one that is under 10 seconds.
Incidentally, my equation was (33*60+42)/45 = 44.9333
So i dont remember exactly how long the flag pole takes to grab but its something like 5-6 seconds from flag pole top which isnt included in wr time. 15-20 may one life may still be worthwhile, but a 20 sec one life is closer to 1 life/30 s with flag plus victory screen
Why was he getting the 1ups again? Don't you need to have lives to skip, making you loose more lives than you gain? What am I missing???

I remember making a level on the original that was so hard, it took my cousin and me 3 days just to beat it once and get it verified to be posted online. I wanna check back on it after all these years lol I remember back then it had like 250 attempts and only 1 clear

Fun fact, the name of the explodey level at 16:21 is "Release all of the stress that's piled up because of Coronavirus!! 'Super Cathartic Level'" and I think it's pretty accurate.

The strat for this run is to simply be multilingual so you can judge by the titles if the map is garbage enough instantly
The optimal strat would be understand the game code so you could predict what levels are coming next and learn the fastest way to beat them
1-1 does have a hidden 1-up, but most people forget about it and don’t put it in their remake
Schrodinger's 1up. The hidden 1up is both there and not there until you hit the space where the block should be.
It's really annoying when you play a 1-1 remake and the 1-up just isn't there. If they're going to remake the level, then remake *all* of the level.

It’s been so long since I’ve seen this kind of speed run
1-1 has an extra live in it, right after the pipe going down to the bonus room before the gap there's a hidden 1-Up, so that's something to speed things up. That is if the person building the level isn't incompetent and knows how it's supposed to be done if you're being unoriginal and just copy it.
If you could get more than 3 lives per level, this speedrun would be so much faster.

Technical note: That wasn't actually time, time is when your life counter reaches 50, NOT when you finish the level that would give you 50. So time is actually at 18:13 . But this speedrun already broke you and doing another one would bring you to tears :P
It isn't 18:13, because of cuts, its actually around 33:45. But yeah.

The best Strat for this speedrun is uploading as many levels as possible with 1 up spam and completable within a second, and just getting 15 of those levels in a row with good rng
The problem with this strat is that you're making it easier for others as well

The problem with skipping over playing is some levels have 3 free lives in boxes at the end. A shorter level for 1 life is faster than skipping 6.

If you ever do another SMB speedrun, dont forget to to hit the flagpole as low as possible, to shorten the animation. Gotta save those frames.
