  • Eddie Irvine talks about how a Ferrari team order towards Michael Schumacher at Magny-Cours 1999 cost him the world championship title later that year. And he hits out at the Jaguar team management, again, while having a relaxed drink with Motorsport-Total.com & Formel1.de Chief Editor Christian Nimmervoll.

    He certainly did not lose the championship because of that one race in Magny-Cours, that's for sure. If Michael hadn't helped him at Malaysia and Salo in Germany then he wouldn't even have had a chance anymore in Suzuka. As Eddie said himself, at the end of the season you count the points and see where you are, "ifs and buts" don't count.

    He lost it in three important incidents after France. First he slid wide and finished 3rd not 2nd in Hungary - 2 points gone. Second of all, after the team fucked up the pit stop at Nurburgring he was in 6th, made a mistake and let hakkinen through who then finished 5th, - two points lost against hakkinen. Last of all his accident in Suzuka in Qualifying, started in 5th which he should've been higher on the grid as he knew the circuit very well.

      He only won in Australia due to both McLaren's failing to finish the race, had Salo move over for him at Hockenheim, had Schumacher give him victory in Malaysia & only won in Austria due to DC taking out Mika at the 2nd corner. It's also a tad disrespectful of him to say Hakkinen only won due to driving a Newey car, when Coulthard was never in Championship contention in the last quarter of any season. At Suzuka he finished almost a lap behind Mika & Michael, which should tell you that he wasn't on the level of either of them.

    Ferrari had a hard choice on their hands. They paid so much money for Schumy and Irvine finished ahead of him in the drivers championship for two years (1997 and 1999) out of four that they raced on the same team. In 1997 when Schummacher crashed into Villeneuve, Schumacher was punished for unsportsmanlike conduct for the collision and was disqualified from the Drivers' Championship. In 1999 the three wheel pitstop was one of the factors that cost him the championship. Salo was also a better number two driver to Irvine than Schumy. Why Ferrari didnt sign up Mika Salo after Irvine is a mystery

      Schumacher may have finished behind Irvine in 1997 and even in 1999 on paper but you and I are both aware , as well as were Ferrari, that that was not reflective of their performance in the car. Ferrari were also well aware of the fact that, if it weren't for Schumacher, they may not have even finished second in the WCC in 1997. It certainly didn't get there because of Irvine...

Hakkinen also had the finest start under pressure I've ever seen at Sazuka- balls and ability, that won him the championship at the final race. Look that start up here on youtube.

    Yes that would have only equaled the points to Mika who would have won the WDC due to his 5 wins to Eddie's 4, but they would have gained bragging rights, and everyone would have remembered the year better because of the draw. And publicity is what they are all in it for at the end of the day.

    • @anthonyiuculano6002
      @anthonyiuculano6002 Před 6 lety +1

      Ferrari wanted Michael Schumacher to win that race because, even if Irvine would have finished no better than third, he would have won the world championship. Hakkinen would have had four less points by finishing second to Schumacher in that final Grand Prix and as such Irvine would have finished the year two points ahead of Hakkinen. He was pushing to the end as he only finished five seconds behind at the line. Whereas, as you said, Irvine would still have finished second if he finished ahead of Schumacher...and trust me, finishing second because your teammate let you through on a day where you could have wona world title is no consolation prize.

      That's because you are not italian, as I am, and you don't know, you don't breathe and live the bad culture we have in Italy about rules and works. Ferrari means Agnelli family, one of the biggest business family in Italy as well as one of the big cancers Italy has always had. There is no meritocracy in our contry, Agnelli family is one bigger examples, with young useless owners, who only survive with the help of the governments and dark links with gangs and criminal organizations(at least for everything related to football tickets and merchandise)... so... in Italy relationship, public image, family, means much more than commitment and merit. Schumacher was the man, and Eddie couldn't have won. And so we had the missing tire...

    • @lucasanfilippo5370
      @lucasanfilippo5370 Před 5 lety +1

      @m4rcd27 Well, first of all, Ferrari was born as its own brand, from the genius of Enzo Ferrari. If you think Ferrari, this is the name we are proud of. Most of us, will tell you that, what I'm telling you is bulshit, because, in part, we are traditional people, and, as I mentioned before, we don't really know what meritocracy is... and so, the important is that, Ferrari won, no matter who won, no matter in which conditions, who was the manager, etc... If you ask me, Ferrari means, an amazing example of our creativity, made, by Enzo Ferrari... Agnelli came later and bought the brand. Agnelli's family was protagonist of a big migration from the south of the italy, to the north. Their name is associated with the brand Fiat, who was created by a small group of people member of aristocracy. They settled and growth, in a situation where the background was poverty, pandering and compromise. They contribute to have a big cultural impact in our culture, in the senso of lose of regional roots, and
      resignation of a "status quo". Their name is associated with Juventus, as you probably know. One silly example of their cultural impact is the fact that, most of the people from the south part of Italy are fun of Juventus, that is from Turin. Believes me, that isn't a silly thing. In our background of submission, they really were a cancer. Their brand, Fiat, survived to all the economic crisys, due to the effort of the different governments, which, in order to avoid mass layoffs
      , helpd the company with great national trades. As you probably know, it recently transformed to FCA and moved to Canada... and that happened after the last economical help from the government, and their
      reassurance on not moving their base abroad. And there were many layoffs... During the years they were, regardless of who the family member was and what generation he was a part of, their name is associated with sex scandals, economical crisys, and sport scam. As you probably know, a few years ago, their football team, was move to the b-league, due to their violent influence on referrees, and football goverbùnment. A couple of months ago, a member of their group committed suicide, because its name was associated to "Camorra"; the sad true, is that he really was involved, selling tickets to mafia people in order to sell them again at a bigger price. Obviously the young Agnelli manager said he wasn't aware of what was happening... Oh yes... I just want to repeat me again. If you talk to another italian guy, you can be hearing the exact contrary... we are a really traditional, servile people. And this guy could be adressing me as a Comunist. But that is the reality. Agnelli always had influence on our politics. So, in the end, keep Ferrari in your heart as Enzo Ferrari, and red, amazing cars. Keep Michael Schumacher in your heart and forget about Agnelli, Marchionne, and their recent lack of results, that is due to their never changing attempt to win without hard work, and economic effort... that is their policy, that is our cultural background.

    • @lucasanfilippo5370
      @lucasanfilippo5370 Před 5 lety

      @m4rcd27 You have to consider how different is here the point of view in politics: we don't have any kind of parties that looks like the dicotomy republicans/ democrats or labor vs tories... Nowaday the situation is really changed, but, until the half of 90es, our political alternatives were(regardless of the name of the political forces) catholics against pseudo/communism. Both of them I think are really different from the idea that someone of Deutch or Belgium could have of their corrisponding parties... It would be very difficolt to say. Agnelli were at the extreme wing of that catholic force, and, in italy, that means fascism... or something that looks like. What I meant before was, that, here, you could have a different idea, you could be someone who thinks with his own ideas... if you think different(in this case from a traditional force) you are a communist...Well, I'm not... The northern part of italy is a little different from the rest. First, he's reach. In a certain way, he looks more like a northern country, but with our cultural deformities... So, yes, you work hard, but you also exploit the people who works in your company, you try every way possible not to pay taxes, and you pay people from bureaus in order to have contracts. They felt like, their paradise was invaded from people from the South, who they call "terroni", and treated like less-human. The fact is, that, even if it was richer, the north of italy was the part with less care about culture and it was traditionally more closed. That was the background for the green flag. But today the green flag don't work... They changed from "Lega Nord"(league of North), to "Lega". They were now led by Salvini, a smart, dirt guy, who understands how, the problem today couldn't be the "terroni" from South, but people from a souther part of the world. We needed a new enemy in order to forget our mistake as a nation, and in order to not think ouselves guilty, but someone else(people from Africa)... The strange fact is that, we never had a senso of our nation, and we always hated each other(south agains north, roman against milan, etc), but today we have found a common enemy. So we don't need to look at the mirror... P.s. Salvini is teasing our minds, with the idea of a strong man who guides the other... We had a certain Benito Mussolini in the past... another guy who was an asshole, as Salvini is, but really good in taking advantage of realationships, lack of honesty)...
