That's an awesome way to make a tractor purchase work. In my case, however, I think my tractor owes me nothing just on saving the cost of having someone maintain about 3 acres of property for me. From time to time in the past I have had to hire out folks to do the different tasks (mow, plow, remove trees, etc) required to maintain the property and projects that come along. Based on offsetting those costs alone, my 1025R TLB has paid for itself in the past 5 years I have owned it. I have also done some of those tasks for friends and neighbors no charge. The satisfaction I get from helping them and the good will that comes form it is priceless. Nevermind the fact that I like to do the work with this awesome tool. And now that it is completely paid for, it is like having a positive cashflow. It has been a sound investment. Great video! Thanks for sharing.

What a great 🎉 amazing video. I already do tractor contract work for my neighbors. However I do NOT have a truck or a trailer so I just drive my John Deere all over my neighborhood. I can only take work that’s 10 blocks or less from my home. Luckily we all live in 2.5 acre parcels so tractors 🚜 are great for the few that have them. So far I’m the only one doing this type of work.

This tractor was simply an example. Also, smaller tractors are well suited for residential jobs. If your target market primarily involves cutting fields and plowing parking lots, then you size your equipment appropriately.

Myself, i have a LA 125. Since buying it new at Home Depot, they were the cheapest in price. Since picking it up, i cut yards in my neighborhood. I edge first, then cut it, then trim it out and finally blow the driveway, curb and sidewalk. I charge 25.00 dollars per yard,except0 t0he corner lots, they are 40 dollars. And I dont have a contract. I only cut the yard when it needs to be cut. But since buying it new. I have replace9d the engine once and this year im replacing the deck. It's cheaper9 then a new mower. No snow in florida. But I do till a few yards that have small gardens. I placed a ball on my back number and a hitch on my small tiller. But I charge a flat fee of 50.00 dollars for there gardens. I'm happy, no overhead,no trailer required, and I'm retired so I can cut or till anytime I want. I can do 3 complete yards plus my yard in one day. T0wo neighbors have small camping trailers parked in there grass, i charge a 15.00 to move there trailer and put it back when im done with there yard. Makes there yard look sharp. But thats my side gig. But one day i might get a bigger mower. The LA125 its a pain to remove the deck,it's only 42 inches, but you need to remove 5 cotter pins and then slide the deck out from under the mower to resharpen or replace the blades and I use mulching blades. No need to bag up the clippings. Saves me time and money. I'm happy and so are they. Nothing runs like a Deere.

    • @volvoben2

Yes, there's plenty more involved...taxes, legal aspects of starting a business, business bank account, commercial vehicle hassles (more inspections, DOT fun, sometimes even a CDL), and what always gets me when considering this sort of venture, insurance. Folks have money to spend in my area, but the cost of insurance is massive, and they won't cover anything until you prove your business is in order (including any vehicles you use in relation to said business being commercial and DOT complaint, and on a commercial insurance policy of course). If you deal in cash and don't mind the liability associated with having no insurance, this business model is illegal but possible. I'm content to pick up a little cash here and there from folks I know.

Based on my experience with the new property we just purchased, if there is an irrigation line or other none major things, I will somehow manage to find it when digging with my front end loader. LOL!! With that said, I understand calling 811, but they generally don’t do private property stuff, so how do you cover the liability element?

I was multi-tasking while watching, so if I'm repeating something you said please ignore me and forgive me. I just wanted to throw in something to consider and that's insurance. Not just for the work you're doing but make sure you have insurance to cover what you are towing. I was involved in a traffic accident a few years ago (uninsured jerk). Really long to super short, I'm out over 5k for not having insurance that covered what I was towing. Just something else to consider when you got your own business. Something like what happened to me could be a huge set back and maybe the end all together. Just add that to the operating cost which isn't tremendous.

I just inquired with my insurance agent two days ago. They require me to schedule every part separately. I mean they want the loader, backhoe, mower and tractor all itemized individually along with every other attachment that I have. No umbrella coverage for everything, every item is itemized individually. So each time I buy or sell an attachment, they want me to update my schedule otherwise I will be paying premiums for items no longer in my possession and new items won’t be covered. I’m sure they have lots of loop holes as well.

Referring to the tractor as a toy does not lend much to the argument for, " we need this ! ". If using the terminology, as a tool, or a machine, etc, or an addition; it should get a better response from the partner in the relationship. ( who generally is the CEO of finances )

Why would you spend so much on such a little tractor? I just bought a 53 HP Kioti, came with a bucket lift and a mower... $50000

I actually think this is terrible advice, do we really need a slew of more people out there with barely a clue on how to properly do the work they think their tractor can. Sure you can mow and plow but digging ditches and driveways etc... ??? Will these people be paying taxes and have insurance, doubt it. Do they know how to grade , trench, proper materials to use, nope.

What a sad statement. Folks, if you have a dream and a plan, you can make it happen. There will ALWAYS be negativity in your life, so take John Long's comment and use it as motivation to prove him wrong. I've heard similar comments my entire adult life, even now. It's good to build a well-rounded perspective, but don't get wrapped up in naysayers.
What I suggested is taking on 2 hours of work a week. This isn't exactly jumping into the fire as a full time career. In fact, it's just about a perfect scenario as they'll certainly have plenty of work at their homestead to accomplish as well to gain experience. Running a tractor isn't rocket science.
This video and game plan isn't for everyone, nor intended to be. It's for the folks who were already thinking about it and just couldn't figure out the next steps. It's for the ones who hadn't thought about it, but now the wheels are spinning in their head. Many folks have no desire, but the ones that do, also have the passion to make it successful.

When you have to “make” money to “offset” the cost of a tractor, the tractor is not “free.” It’s pretty close to telling someone, “I’ll give you my tractor for free, but you’re going to have to work for me to pay it off.”
