    Good morning Courtney. I give you lots of respect- starting and building your own business is a very difficult endeavour and most don't make it. Congrats on your success and thanks for sharing some of that journey with us. Lots of good advice in there, for folks to think about. Have a Happy New Year and lots of success for the 2022!

    Yes! Do more! I am a young 57 yr. old in an 18 yr. self employed handyman business and trying to figure out the mechanics of making videos in order to power my way to a better retirement. Need editing software, computors too small get a monster pc. Go Pro is miserable, basically a cube that doesn't do what you want when you want. Got another camera. Add a long list of other obstacles. Hard to believe it has to be this painful. I agree with drtcurt that your character is much to do with the popularity. I feel that direct honesty is still a value people recognize and appreciate. Again with your business trial and tribulation descriptions it lets us know the struggle I am dealing with is the same pains others have had to work through but you don't hear it from people who are similar to me like you seem to be. I was a mechanic and am now a handyman, I fix things, I meet people in a very comfortable old school kind of way. I am no "techie" or modern day computor wizard. If nothing else it's an encouragement to see such similarities in myself to how you approached things and evolved.

    You have one of the most informative, accurate and easy to watch tractor channels on YT and I was shocked to hear you claim not to be a good speaker. I was in the military and now in the DOD as a civilian so I've not experienced the risks of being a business owner, but I've always appreciated those who hustle to create and grow a business. • @JCWren
    @JCWren Před 2 lety +1

    Great video! I never understood that whole thing about paying to advertise for someone else, especially sports teams. I remove dealership stickers and plates from my cars because they're not paying me to advertise for them. Also, one of the coolest business models to be in is where people pay you to take things, then other people pay you to take that same item from you, like tire recycling. You charge people to take old tires, grind them up, then sell the output for landscaping, playgrounds, whatever. Same for oil recycling. Lastly, the good thing about having a number of revenue streams is that if one goes down, is not being reliant one any single one of them. Lose one and you're still putting food on the table, and you just work to find something to replace it.

    Courtney - this is my favorite content so far. At least until my tractor gets delivered. It's uncomfortable for a lot of people to discuss the business aspects of their content. It shows the trust you have in your audience, and I hope the transparency you've provided comes back to you through these revenue streams. It might help to look at merchandise as advertising/marketing potential. There are some really easy online methods, like Printful, that could make it a very low-time investment (or dare I say passive income stream).

  • @FloridaDeere

    Excellent video, just like all of the other ones you do. With regards to hats, shirts, etc. Most people who buy tractor's, implements and other equipment feel proud of the product they buy and where they buy it. A hat, shirt etc. if gifted with their purchase or bought online as merchandise makes them feel good and also loyal. It's not the monetary value of the merch but rather the respect. And respect will go miles for you.

    I know you have made mention of them. After having one for several seasons it is so much nicer to work with.

    Very interesting video. It has already been said in the comments below but I'll humbly add my two cents anyway. The swag / merchandise issue is one I wish you would reconsider. I think most of us that buy implements for our tractors put a good deal of time and deliberation into it before we make the purchase. Where we choose to do that business can have some significance. Even something as simple as a sticker to put on your tractor or truck could make a cool conversation starter.
    I think it's especially true when the business offers an array of different implements and attachments that can't always be found at local dealers; who are often limited to products made by the particular tractor brand they carry.
    Happy New Year

    Hey Courtney. This was a very informative video. Liked the income source analysis and the decisions made to "cut the line" on some of them. Starting a business and leading to success takes a lot of work and risk. Which is why I prefer to do pro-bono service projects with lil Jonny to help friends and others when I can. Can't say there is no risk but certainly plenty of reward (monetary and non-monetary). Thanks for sharing!

    I wish you were a distributor for Pression Manufacturing for their add a grapple line. We are getting a new Grand L 3560 le along with pallet forks. The adjustable add a grapple for forks is the best fit for our needs. The Kubota dealer we are buying from is a distributor but I would like to compare since I'm an accountant. Lol
    On another note you might reach out to Big Truck Big RV channel. He is my biggest go to on trailering, but he just got a new sub compact tractor for his new property and he is struggling some on how to get the most use of his new tractor. He audience is huge and a collaborative effort might be in order for the both of you.

    I do not want to ask your trade secrets, but how do you find the margin to be profitable on used equipment sales? Are you buying units in need of repair? Are you offering trade in takes and creating the margin there?
    With the value of used equipment being so high, it seems the margins are so tight depending on the area.

    Nice video, lots of information for business owners like myself to chew on. One thought: Hats and shirts could be more effective for someone like you seeing as you’re trying to reach a more regional market or even further as opposed to myself who’s a small landscape company owner/tractor owner in southern Indiana and trying to just stay in this area. Word of mouth keeps me plenty busy but a hat or shirt starts a conversation about your brand for someone who’s maybe never seen the channel outside your area. Just a thought.

    Hey Courtney, I appreciate your honesty and transparency in this video. I agree with most everything you explained here. As a LONG time viewer and tractor owner, the only thing that I have felt a little uncomfortable with, is the Sponsorship. For some reason, that Bora ad in every video just felt like a bit of a Sellout. - For whatever it's worth, hats and t-shirts will never be a big money maker, but they do, not only help us feel connected, and reinforce loyalty, but also would help increase your audience as we get the opportunity to tell others about GWT.
    Keep up the great work !

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  Před 2 lety +4

      Totally understand, thanks for your feedback. Sponsorships are a fairly common format with larger YT channels. I have tried to make a conscious effort to eliminate one Google ad in all videos with them as sponsor. However, some companies like BORA have a wide appeal to my viewer base and they align with my focus on tractor safety as well. So, it checked a lot of boxes and made/makes sense. At least to me! Happy New Year!
