Twin turbo LS limo!!! when is it happening????
How much would you charge to come to Kansas City to work on a Jeep
@Thomas Jefferson Kamala can't be vise president she's an anchor baby.
So here's a questing for you Kevin, after working on this and dealing with all the issues and problems, do you still want a turbo Grand National or have you changed your mind haha. I always wanted a TDI Jetta, 2014/15 with a manual, till I worked on one and decided I wanted nothing to do with owning one lol. It was a nightmare to work on
Kevin's reaction to hearing the car over 230,000 miles on it was absolutely priceless
Its better to put the car on craigs list. Its a mess
😂
The owners of this car remind me of a next door neighbor that I had back in 1972. He parked his 57 Chevy Bel Air in his backyard and left it. He just left so in 1979, I offered him $1800 for the car and he turned me down. Fast forward to 1995, he sold it for $500.. The paint was gone, interior upholstery was trash, the tires were split and cracked, chrome was rusted and peeling, windshield was shattered and engine was seized up.. some people shouldn't own classic cars..
I like to believe those owners have a plan, but lack the money/time.
This one needs an owner who will take care of it and use it. But at least its sort of saved now and the old man owning it can enjoy some more driving it.
I have left my fiero in a field on a pallet for almost 13 years now so.... Sometimes life just dose not allow a toy vehicle when you don't own a house or garage and are struggling after covid just to keep a job. Sometimes cars are not important.
@@thatdudeinorange2297 Now that it can drive hopefully he keeps it running.
Hey, it's thanks to those people these cars become classics 😄
When you solder, heat the surface not the solder. If you keep the heat around the neck the solder will flow to the heat once it melts. Then you solder inside the joint sealing it.
Buddy look how good it turned out so apparently he did something right
@@2vintageDeamonFan Yes, but you can always do better. Listening to tips is a good idea.
Also, because it's lead, wear a mask and avoid breathing in the fumes.
@@2vintageDeamonFan Looks don’t matter, the solder would not have flowed into the joint fully. It’s sealed on the very surface and has an increased chance of premature failure.
Figured that out as I got going! Definitely a lot of technique to it
It is always a good day when Junkyard Digs posts a video
Seriously though, I love this channel, if it wouldn’t physically kill the man I’d love a video every day of the week, but it’s enough work posting as much as he does so Im just thankful the channel exists! His videos have such a good vibe to them and gives me my old car fix. And oddly enough even though I’ve never owned any of these vehicles, because they start off not running but knowing someone drove the hell out of them before gives each car almost a nostalgic like feeling if that makes any sense. Sorta like seeing videos of urban explorers exploring abandoned places that used to be heavily used and populated, imagining what it used to do gives it that nostalgic feeling for me!
@@MrTdogg175 i know right. Seeing old iron get a second chance at life is so cool to me. I always kinda think about the stories these cars could tell and it is nice hearing some of the owners stories. Not to mention Kevin and Mook make it fun to watch and enjoy what you are watching. I would love to own some of these cars one day.
@@MrTdogg175 mook hasnt posted a new video in like 2 months. wonder why?
Facts
Same!
I dream about doing that for people. What a good thing you did, and a learning experience.
Plus you folks can add "Grand National" to your list of accomplishments.
I had a 1987 Grand National that sat in a barn from 1990 until 2014. I resurrected it well but man did it have a lot of gremlins! 34,000 original miles.
You nailed the “persona” of GNs. Took me 7 years to get mine right.. even after being totaled. I hope the owner enjoys the car for what it is. Shoving any amount of boost down a 200,000+ mile 3.8 will be underwhelming. Great series on a great car (in theory)
Best thing to do it throw away all the wiring and do a ecu master stand alone.
Be a good v8 swap candidate
For all you real GN fans lets not be silly its only a GN.. the car is much better suited for a v8
@@dustinblock9186 agreed, it needs a ls
@@dustinblock9186 you could have saved alot of reading and just said you have brain damage.
That has to feel really good to finally get it back to the family and out of your hair. You did a good thing and job well done.
would not have put all my money into fixing it. then giving it back
Look you can’t judge a entire model of car based on a 200+k version that was obviously run hard and put away wet. I think the fact that it ran as well as it did (some of the time) is a testament to its awesomeness.
I agree 100 percent!!
Yes, but its still a G bogy. Gm's notoriously cheap car
And like the fords of the time where built any better all the cars of the time where cheap the thing is with the GN Buick advanced the tech of the future. Ford tried it with there turbo thunderbirds but were no where as fast
@@JunkyardDigs G Bodies are pretty middle of the road models for GM. Cavalier, Chevette, Citation, etc would have all been the "notoriously cheap" GMs of the period. No one was building super high quality vehicles in the US in the 80s. As a Fox owner of almost 20 years myself, you're probably taking a step backward if you're expecting "quality" from yours.
@@ronashbaugh4351 You're not really wrong about any of that, but it's worth the mention that Ford was developing their SVO turbo setup the same time GM was working on the turbo 6. If Ford were actually trying to compete, they wouldn't have started with a 4 cylinder. They both emerged on the market at basically the same time and are only accidental competitors in that they offered the Mustang SVO engine in the larger T-bird body.
I like them both, but they're very different cars. I agree that quality was about the same across the board.
Grand National and the DeLorean both are the "Don't meet your heroes" kind of car
No..the GN is a rocket. This one died and fell on its face due to lack of research ( digs) and a terrible owner. A 70s Regal Turbo with 175 hp with a 4 barrel will shred tires...fully clapped out
@@netrioter hahaha okay
@@netrioter a rocket built from junk😂
@@JunkyardDigs Welcome to 1980s GM. I love the way that every one of the cool added bits will screw you over in it's own special way.

When the car was spewing fluids everywhere, I had one thought, ‘"’In the auto industry they call that a f**k up.'' And no criticism intended, it happens to the best of us, LOL. In high school auto shop class I was doing an exam where you had to do a batch of diagnostic tests on a lawnmower engine. It turns out I hooked up the spark plug tester wrong. I pulled the chord, the spark plug went off, and it went BANG! Right in my ear because my head was right by the exhaust. The exam question was "Does the motor have spark?" my teacher wrote down "Damn right it does!!!" LMAO.
Mook: "Kevin what the heck is this????" *Genuine concern*
Kevin *processing, realizing, accepting*: This car has no radiator..... *sadness*
If that doesn't capture how we Auto Mechanics opetate, I don't know what will.
Edit: I didn't mean to spell Operate, as opetate, but ths k you Mr. Digs for understanding me anyway.
Yes, but for all of us eye-candy-craving dudes, seeing Cute Mook for the first time in the video made this mishap worthwhile :P :D
I always loved those car’s! Need to dump those stupid wheels though. Glad you got all the problems figured out so it runs like it’s supposed to and that’s freaking fast and very fun to drive.
Same here it is car i would love to own. You can tell this guy loves his car remembers everything 🤣
Yeah those wheels need to go
@@Fransais the factory wheels look much better
Great job 👏. He said over 230000 miles. Kevin had an AHA moment. You put in a lot of time and money for this family. You and Mook and you're Dad and brother and everyone else did an awesome job. Congratulations 🎊.
I just grabbed a 1987 GN myself as well as a 87 Monte Carlo SS. Watching your videos to prepare me for what my G bodies will need. Thanks for the content man, excellent work!
Hey Kevin when I need to solder a radiator I test it with a bicycle inner tube. Cut the tube across from the valve stem then clamp ends onto hose openings and fill it with water put the cap on and pressure it with air. Works Fantastic ! Just a tip for future radiator fixes. Keep up the Great work on these videos -- Love watching the revivals!
Sometimes, it's not the car, but the story of the car, and the people around it. Those memories are priceless.
Kev, this is awesome. Owners of cars always have stories and know their vehicles well. I've got an old WJ and it makes me smile every time I get in it. It's far from perfect but it's mine.
I had to laugh when Don finally told you the rest of the story 🤣
Well that explains everything!!
All that considered I'd say you did a pretty damn good job getting it back up and running.
C'mon Kevin you don't need a code reader for an OBD 1 gm. You just need a paper clip and the ability to count engine light flashes. If the car has automatic temperature control you can press OFF and WARMER at the same time and the codes will come up on the temperature display.
That family should have their classic car license revoked. They don't deserve it nor did they deserve your help. Great content as always.
That's what I was thinking! Owning such a beautiful car and leaving to waste!
Only takes one work to understand why Iowa..........or rust
you're forgetting that they don't see it as a classic car, because it's just a car to them. Same as if you stopped driving your daily, you'd just see it as the car you stopped driving.
To them it was just a black Buick regal
Seeing the sad state of such a iconic car especially me being a GM/Buick guy I wanted to cry seeing this car in the condition it's in. I wished they'd sell it to you I know you'd bring it fully back to life and beauty. But thanks for caring enough to take this on for them because I don't think this would've been done by the owners
Imagine what it would pull at auction fully restored...
That car has so much cancer, its not worth it, and I don't think he's interested anymore.
Sadly it will most likely go right back in the barn and be a lot worse in a few years.
The ones worth big money are 50k or fewer mile originals. This one has 230k+ miles and has been driven HARD (including a bad side collision at some point it looks like).
“You can’t polish a turd.” “No, but I can wax it.” I think this is the funniest thing I’ve heard on this channel! Keep up the great work and I hope you, Mook, and your families have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving!
It's awesome that y'all are getting this Grand National...any vehicle...back on the road for the family that owns it. Kudos!
You guys got a lot of heart, and I love that you guys did this for this family. Thank you all for being outstanding folks!
Great video Kevin And Great Last Chapter grand national gave you the run around on this one @Junkyard Digs
A little tear, in 1987 I bought my wife an brand new buick GN, wink wink. Well, she worked 7 miles away at her work, wink wink. She loved it! In her first 3 years of having a license she had 5 speeding tickets, she started driving in 1966 we married in 1972 and she never got a ticket the 47 years we were married. I paid 16,500 for it with 4 miles, on 4 year interest. I upgraded it as follows 1. Hodgkis suspension kit( relocated trailing arms, massive rear sway bar- eliminate all wheel hop, and large front sway bar which flattened body lean)
2. ATR, no longer in business, 12” cone k&n filter in a box with a 2” slit laying horizontally in front dam cut out feeding into inter cooler. 3 changed chip eliminating rpm limiter and turning boost to 12 to 14 pounds. 4 exhaust “test pipe”.Never took it to the track but there was not a Corvette in the Pomona Valley California area that could catch it. So I started racing Kawasaki 900 ninja motorcycle from green light to 105 mph where he’d pull away. In 1996 paid us my wife took her GN to get her hair done. And when she was finished her car was GONE. They never found it & with all copies in hand showing upgrades our insurance company paid us $16,500 for it and I put it down on Impala SS a good road car but not the rock our 87 GN
That Buick has been around holy cow. 230k+ miles plus all the nonsense it went thru over the years? That car def has some fun stories
You did a great thing for this family. That’s why I love your videos.
yeah to get views and get money from YT . a lot of youtubers do this
I really enjoyed watching this series. You did a great job working through all the issues and you saved a peice of automotive history, even if the car is kind of a pile. I hope the family will enjoy it
Finally, got to finish watching it this morning. So cool that you did that for this gentleman. You gave a forgotten car a new life, and it can be enjoyed again. Wish I could find one here around the quad cities
Kevin, thank you for an inspirational series on learning to fix what cannot be replaced. A good deed has been done in helping the 23 year old spirit in Don have another go at this used and abused Grand National.
That's awesome that you got it running for them
That man telling stories of the car was awesome. Can't wait to see the fox body build!! That should be heckin sweet!!
Watched every video of this. Your an awesome guy
Kevin, I’m sure the owner is pleased. Can’t Waite to see your next new video.👍👍👍
I can't quite express how excited I am to see you build a drag car, especially a fox body. I've loved them ever since my father had an 89 GT.
Been looking forward to this. Now to kick back and watch some good content!
Paid expert: "I'm not touching that radiator"
Kevin: "so I watched this CZcams video"
My little Brother had an '87 Grand National back in the day (with a lot fewer miles on it) and that thing would scream down the highway. He sold it to a local guy who runs a garage and it still looks to be in tip top shape today. Then again he keeps it in a garage when he isn't driving it and it's also free of mice, lol.
Doing good deeds there man, bringing back someone's old machine for them! Kudos to you!
Hello and thumbs UP !
I'm a GM technician and I currently own 4 gbodies, 3 El Caminos and a Cutlass Supreme Brougham. They aren't the worst, definitely not the best but they still grab attention and have a large following. I honestly want a Grand National but in my area they're $30K+ in near perfect shape with low mileage, meaning 5K-50K miles. And low mileage just means a headache of constant repairs as everything has just sat untouched. So low mileage or high mileage, I'd love to own one but I wouldn't want to deal with repairs on that turbo 3.8L setup. I've got a buddy with a twin turbo/LSA Grand National, and that I could get behind. Also, the external oil pump design (timing cover mounted) on the 3.8L was a terrible idea, oil starvation problems to the max.
Yep, low mileage on a car this age is bad news. Letting them sit and not run all that time is actually worse than driving it every day for the same amount of time.
@@Truckguy1970 It definitely seems that way with certain vehicles. Sitting for a long time wreaks havoc on any seal intended to hold back lubricants. My 78 El Camino sat in a country garage/barn for 10 years and I slowly worked on fixing everything as it was my daily driver. The accumulator seal on the TH350 blew out and shot ATF all over the catalytic converter. I pulled the accumulator out to replace the rubber seal and the old one I pulled out felt like a plastic ring. I have NO IDEA how it held fluid back for an entire year of driving before it finally let go. 😂 It had me so surprised that I kept it as a wall hanger haha. Even my 85 Cutlass had been sitting in a garage for 15 years before I bought it. It has 42,000 actual miles on it, spotless interior, clean exterior with decent options but has some severe rod knock. It has a 3.8L with that dreaded external oil pump that starves the engine of oil on startup. I took a gamble on that car and found out quickly why it was parked 😅 I plan on either rebuilding the 3.8L or LS swapping it and making it a sleeper
Back in 1988 while getting ready to deploy to Japan, I was driving my Power Wagon from El Toro, CA back to Arizona for storage, my truck overheated at the AZ/CA border on I-10. When I pulled over, the top tank seam on my radiator blew out. Because I was deploying for 6 months, all my tools (including propane torch and solder) were in my truck. I was able to beat the seam back together and then solder it up on the side of the highway. The "patch" job held for three more years and was still good when I sold the truck. LOL
It was very cool that you put such time and effort into a car someone else owned. You definitely learned alot about older car problems when they sit not driven. Great video Kevin.
GM didn’t start using Dexcool until 1996, this car used regular green
I'm assuming that's a typo and you intended to say _96._ I've never seen an 80s GM with Dexcool in it.
Even if it did use dexcool the best thing to do is drain it out and replace it with normal green coolant
I was well aware, but there was no way I was going to attempt draining that block, and also no way I was going to mid them and create glue. So I ran what it had
@@TheBrokenLife I did indeed mean 1996, my bad
@@JunkyardDigs So some dork previously decided to put Dexcool in it? The maintenance decisions on that car are mind boggling...
i like how honest you are with it not living up to the hype. You put it in a real good perspective. I feel like some people would try to justify their prior hype to the grave, instead of being honest.
In fairness, this is a *really* worn out example. They're great cars when maintained.
He formed an opinion of the model by selecting the worst possible example he could find. Then he put himself in an even worse position by volunteering to spend his own money on someone else's car, which he was openly bitter about.
Forming a negative opinion seemed assured from the start, which doesn't strike me as overly honest. BUT... He's also a pretty young guy and some of this stuff you only realize in retrospect. It's also easier to see it as an outsider after the fact, so, touché to myself.
Anyhow, I hope some day he gets a chance to at least take a ride someone's GN that isn't a pile of garbage. I get the feeling he's never even sat in one except _that_ one.
You have to view the "hype" on these cars through 1986 eyes. These were essentially super cars in their day. Compared to modern cars it's not amazing. It also has a quarter million miles on it. Kevin also seems to be the type who would bitch about winning the lottery because of the taxes.
Such a great video. Thanks for sharing
Great series. I like the way you break it down Barney style with the diagnosis, cause and repair. And the advertisements are great also.
With almost a 1/4 million miles on it you did good.
18:19 Yes, it's always good to use plenty of flux, especially for a "dodgy" repair-job like this where you can't really get at all the parts to be soldered, and the materials may not be in the best shape as far as corrosion and cleanliness are concerned.
Really excited for the future content. If it's as great as all the previous content we are in for some good watching. Thank you JYD.
Great video glad you posted keep them coming thanks
Honestly Kev, drive a better GN. My grandfather's is in better shape and i do love driving it. That said, ironically, I love driving his Foxbody even more.
They're great cars when they aren't super worn out.
Muy buen trabajo men te felicito desde cd juarez chiuaua mx
You deserve a lot of credit. You did a really nice thing for that family.
Now on to the fox body drag car. I'm excited to see that get underway.
It'll be interesting to see what approach you take and what goals you set for it.
Classic industries had a new radiator in stock. Most of the ordnary brick and mortar part stores don't stock parts for vintage cars.

Ya I have a love/hate relationship with this series. It's cool to watch it come back to life but it sucks knowing it's probably gonna go back to the same state it was in when it started
At least it was in a barn and not in a grove of trees this time
@@Beandiptheredneck yeah.. to be fair, this wasn't exactly an all-in repair or restoration effort. not to downplay the time they put into it, but given that what you said is definitely true and it will immediately be parked where it will be turned into a mouse house again, i think it got all the attention it deserved and then some.
People have any number of reasons for why a car rots. It's sad, but life can sneak up on you. Often it's because someone starts a family and doesn't have time to work on the vehicle they purchased when kids suddenly become their full attention and priority for a few decades. I'm blessed to have garage space, but I understand the time aspect of having a family as I sit with my own hotrod in the garage, not fully finished.
@@adamdefouw1597 not an excuse to let stuff rot, if you can't do anything sell it to someone who can
The Grand National is definitely a hero you can meet. Just not this one. No offense meant to the owners, but it is spent. It would either need a full restoration, or it would be a candidate for a resto-mod. I wouldn't feel bad altering this one to adapt to personal tastes.

Dang Kevin, I haven't had a radiator fixed since before this car was built! I am impressed! Thanks for the demonstration!
I get the feeling that this car will be driven until the next small issue comes up, and then it'll sit in that building until he dies. I despise people like that. "Oh well you know I just obliterated it and ran 20 psi in it now I'll just let it rot."
