  • It is not often that we can find a full Hainanese coffee shop that is truly Hainanese, from the owners, the food and the chefs. There is a 61-year old Hainanese kopitiam in Pandamaran, Klang that echoes with authenticity the moment you step in. This video explores a rare find, the Choon Guan Coffeshop in Pandamaran, and discovered that the current owner, Madam Foo ( popularly known as Ah Kiew) is a pure Hainanese with a history that traces back to China. Her father was a chef for a British Officer. After the British left he started this kopitiam in 1956 ,which she inherited since a young age. Indeed, she still personally cooks and prepares all the Hainanese servings here. Most striking are the authentic Hainanese styled servings. Hainanese kaya laiden toasts, half boiled eggs, Hainanese coffee from their house brand, and special rice balls served with spicy sauce. Another special feature is the way the teh tarik is made. Not with the usual “tarik”(pull out) from one glass to another but by hand with an egg beater to get all the foam. Head over to experience this authentic Hainanese ambience.
Address : Kedai Kopi & Makanan Choon Guan
433, Jalan Besar Pandamaran, 42000 Pelabuhan Klang, Selangor Darul Ehsan.
    Tel : 03 3168 6828 Business Hours : 7am - 6pm, Closed on Tuesday
Take note that due to popular demand and limited supply of an authentic Hainanese chicken favourite, do come before 10.30am, or earlier, otherwise you will miss your chance to enjoy it.

I can recall this treat back in the 60's BUT the rice balls and chicken were definitely kept separately. My mother ran a specialty koptiam cafe. I used to help her roast coffee beans behind the shop lot. She immigrated from Hainan in 1919

Her recipe is the same as my mum. Fry washed raw rice with garlic, ginger using some chicken fats then boil rice with chicken soup & salt. That is why chicken rice with very yellow colour use margarine to cook & isn't authentic chicken rice. The smell is also different. Authentic one is very aromatic.
Kaya butter toast in most shops these days use margarine. Very disappointed.
