- My HLA Attachments Root Rake Grapple is built like a tank. Today though, I take the Kubota B2601 compact tractor with my grapple and do some serious granite rock work here up at the cottage. Maybe I pushed it too far. Leave the city, grab a coffee and hang out with me today and lets see how it performs. Cheers!

GP - I found your channel this weekend while doing some tractor research. I am considering a Kubota after almost 15 years with a New Holland compact tractor. You were moving some sex stones. Back in the early 1980s I graduated school and started my apprentice ship with the Pipefitters & Plumbers. Just starting out I was put with a backhoe operator cleaning out ditches. Occasionally he called a large rock a sex stone. Trying not to seem too dumb I didn't ask why until finally I had to ask what a sex stone was? He said "boy it's a big friggin rock". In 38 years I've never forgotten my first lesson in plumbing. There's only two more things you need to know, poop doesn't flow up hill, and payday is on Friday. We acted like there was more to justify the income but there really isn't. lol

I am getting my B 2601 with grapple(!) on Thursday. I am excited to give it a try. I have been saving some projects! Because of you, I now have the confidence to play with it, and get some real work done! I am happy the black flies are slowing down. The deer flies are still in full force here in East central MN. Hi GP, I've been so busy these past months that I haven't been watching many of your videos. Great job on this one as usual! I love my grapple too! My neighbor chuckled at my B2601 when I brought it home, but I've been able to help her out of some jams that she struggled to complete with her larger tractor so she's now come around. She's had to admit that with the proper implements the 2601 is a darn handy little tool:)

And i thought West Virginia was a rocky state wow, ive never seen as many boulders. Seems when your forks were plowing thru the top soil, about every 4 to 6 "s you were bringing up basketball size rocks. That was impressive. Thanks GP hope you have a great week as well.

Glad you only bent it a bit. Looked like you had a lot of stress on the right loader arm. Fun to watch! Pushing the limits is always going to catch up sooner or latter and for some reason a guy always has to learn it the hard way.
LOL. So true Rick. especially a stubborn guy like myself. Always tough trying to centre the load when you can't see all the rocks prying up in different places while you are pushing but yes, happy it was just a few bends. I don't think it is made to do the rock work I do with it. But it's built pretty tough overall. Thanks and all the best!
I'm right there with you Gord! I have the same grapple on my 2650 and a few of my tines have some character now after about 50 hours of making trail through my 20 acres in Stoney Kepple. (Near Owen Sound ON) My trails ended up being lined with rocks which is kind of nice though. The nice thing about the hla being mild steel, it should be easy to fix. Haven't done mine yet though.

Good morning Joe! LOL. I expected with all the heavy work I've done with it over the last 18 months that I would have bent something long ago. We did a quick fix to it for now - simple bend. Good job Gord... The small tractor is a workhorse. Not surprised to see a couple bent tines, comes with the territory! I'm thinking a small excavator would have been ideal here as well as rooting out the stumps. Sometimes we have to make do with what we have on hand, well done...

That is a very powerful tractor for its size. We have a lot of rocks here, thankfully they are small. I can rake the yard and have it rock free, then next week it will look like it has never been raked.

Good evening GP, that is a very nice shooting range !!! GP, If possible try to always put the big rock between the two arms of you FEL you are less prone to do damage due a twisting load. After that great work, you are probably due for a good check of all the bolts and nuts for torque to keep the structural integrity on your tractor !!! Great video GP !!! Cheers !!!
Good morning Dave. Great points and great points about the bolts etc. Yes, I always try to keep it centred but very difficult that day as there are too many rocks and debris that emerges unexpectedly as you are pushing or grabbing. But good advice my friend - thanks!

Man O Man GP !!! And I thought my land grew a lot of rocks !! Can you even imagine trying to do that by hand. I can't. Thank God for modern hydraulics, it makes a big tractor out of a little tractor. Another thing, watching a video like this should dissuade those 'diehard' manual transmission guys. The hydrostat is absolutely nothing short of amazing for continual forward and backward operation. Yes, I drive in and see the rock walls that line the property lines of other properties out by the concession road and I can only imagine what those folks did 100 years ago with a horse and trailer and hand tools prying all those rocks out of the field and placing them into a wall on their property lines. Wow! It may be a little tractor but it can move some monster rocks!! Call me impressed! And bending something is bound to happen eventually when you are really working a tractor. Been there and done that before but never had it on video like you did! Looking forward to the video of you fixing it!

Break for some water . That was funny Gord . Good video . Those sure are some big rocks . A buckett with teeth on the front would have helped a bit . You know , the ones that you bolt on the buckett . A torch will help fix that grapple . Guy has his own shooting range . Wow . That's my dream . On a side note Guy can shoot any caliber of shot gun or rifle at his range . Even a 50cal rifle if he so chooses . That is a big caliber . But here in the Nanny Province of Ontario he can't even shoot a very small 22 cal hand gun on his property . No matter if he had 1000 acres . He has to go to a certified gun range to shoot any type of hand gun . Go figure . Welcome to the Nanny Province of Ontario . To tell you the truth my neighbours would go to hate me very soon if I had my own gun range . I'd probably have my own portable trap machine set up as well . Nothing like the smell of burnt gun powder in the morning . Love it . LOL

Glad to see you mention the issue with using a grapple/bucket to back-drag. I also saw a vid on youtube where the guy bent the piston rod doing just that. Neil Messick also did a TMT piece on that same issue. How do you like the LHA grapple compared to the Artillian? I like the LHA do to the fact that it has full length arms top and bottom. I don't care for the Artillian model that is split into 2 sections, with 2 cylinders. It's great for picking up uneven loads, but I think would take some getting used to.
My preference would be the LHA for what I would use it for. As always, thanks for the great info and video.

Good morning Timothy! Not to worry about the name - LOL. All good kind sir. I have only used the HLA model but have seen the other one on Jon's channel. So it would be hard for me to offer an opinion on it. Interesting concept having multiple attachment options on one frame. I love the HLA so far. I have started bending a few tines lately from all the rock digging I have done with it. I actually don't think the grapple was designed to lift or dig big boulders and I realized I have been applying too much down pressure when I grab the rocks. An easy fix at my neighbour's workshop at some point.I think if you have two separate sections with two cylinders, it would be helpful but models with a single section or jaw, and two cylinders doesn't;t make sense to me. The single cylinder i have applies more than enough power to grip. Thanks for watching and for the morning comment. Have a good long weekend!

How's she goin'? Wow the tines bent real easy it looked like. The rocks were big and heavy but the tine bent pretty easy. I didn't expect that. The grapple will pick a pretty big rock, but like you say, the weight of the tractor limits the size of rock. Interesting video GP and I like the way you edit!!! Take care!!!

Yup, as I keep reviewing the footage I think I just kept applying too much down pressure on the grapple, combined with the curve on the rock, probably made for the perfect storm, as they say. I have driven this thing pretty hard over the last 18 months so I was surprised. But Guy said it is a simple fix so all good. Cheers and all the best!

Great work! As always we like watching your video's, some great learning material. Have you had any issues with your grapple not holding close on heavier objects? I have the Land pride SGC 0554 grapple (two cylinders) and lately when I clamp down on lets say a bit heavy/larger diameter log it wont hold it, the grapple will open slightly and log will fall out. I need to go back through you video's and see what 3rd function valve you have installed it appears different than mine (also B2601), maybe that valve is letting back some pressure?
Hey good day Chris. Thanks for the comment. Some good discussion there. I think the reason I bent the tines was because I kept applying too much close pressure and I guess those tines caught a curve of the rock and those tines got the worst of it. But honestly, I have been using it since October 2017, and it has never let go once I grip a rock or timber. If the object slides sideways while carrying it or it moves, then it can possible slip out depending on its shape, and I have to grip it a little more as I see the rock turn but the grapple itself stays locked when I grip it. The 3rd function valve I have was installed by the dealer when I first bought it so I assume it is a Kubota part. I don't know much more about them but perhaps your dealer can provide some more background or info to explain it. Thanks for sharing the info. Good luck and talk again soon!

Do you think it would be ok to extend the grapple to use as a rake if you float the grapple? Or could it still hurt the pistons?

I figured I would need something a little bigger but after watching a few of your videos the 2601 looks like it can handle most of my projects. Hey good day David. Thanks for the comment and for watching. I am happy it is helpful. Yes you can get a BH for it. Mech Uno has a channel in which he often uses his BH with his B2601 so you may want to check out his channel and see it working so you get an idea of what it may or may not be able to handle, relative to what you think you may need. If you have a smaller property - less than 6 or 7 acres, then a compact tractor may do the trick but if it is bigger you may want to consider at least an L series. Hello Heinz. It is an HLA Attachments "Root Rake with Grapple", "Light Duty". HLA is an Ontario company but they don't retail - they sell through retailers like Farmer Equipment Sales (dot com). I was pretty sure, but confirmed yesterday, that the reason the tines bent was because I kept applying too much down pressure from the hydraulic cylinder on the jaws. My bad. I did it again yesterday. I used to be more careful but lately have been a little too aggressive. That hydraulic cylinder clearly has a lot of down force. Love the grapple. I am in the Kawarthas. Glad you enjoy the videos and hope you enjoy the long weekend at the cottage. The weather is supposed to be awesome this weekend. Cheers!

Hey FR. Some good questions there. We just did a quick bend back on them (long pipe for leverage) but my neighbour will fire up the torch at some point and we will fix properly. I am not sure as we have not discussed it too much yet but I believe he needs to heat it up before bending it properly and I am not sure if it will affect it's integrity or not. @@GPOutdoors I think I am just going to leave mine, to be honest. I don't mind it being bent and it isn't effecting anything I do with it. But you are much more careful with your machine than I am with mine.
I agree with you FR. We did a simple bend back on them but I am not at all worried to fix it perfectly either. The thing is not a scalpel, it's a broad sword so I think there is nothing to worry about overall. Thanks again and have a good one!

Good morning. The 2rd function valve is an option sold separately but I am very happy I had it installed - I use it for the grapple as well as for the front mount snowblower in the winter. Cheers!

Something else of note is when pushing or lifting huge weights/loads on the outside corners of the bucket or grapple you can twist the loader arms up if not careful ....keep them heavy loads centered

Good day Richard. Thanks for your support - I am happy you enjoy them. I think this tractor is great for my 4 acres here. I think as you get up to 7 or 8 acres and above , an L series would be better ( I'm not an expert by any means but just my thoughts). The pricing is available on all the main manufacturers websites now - Kubota, Deere, Massey, Kioti etc so best to get up to date pricing from there. The attachments are usually somewhere around 2k each on average I think. Good luck and thanks again!

Likely those tines bent due to being constructed from regular mild steel. You can avoid that fate by buying AR400 constructed grapples in the future.

Why was the brush guard down?
I always leave it in that position. it came that way from the dealer - he suggested to leave it there as it is easier to get into the hood etc so i have never moved it. Do you have yours in the other position where it is closer to the front of the hood?
Yes, I always run with it near the hood unless I want to open the hood. I think that doing so makes it less susceptible to it being snagged by errant branches.

The one part I have not figured out yet is the third party liability when off property. Seems no one so far is willing to offer that coverage. I have one other company someone suggested , which i need to call but if they don't offer it then I will just keep looking. If you know of a company that does offer it, it would be greatly appreciated if you can let me know the name. Cheers!
Have you checked Dublin Insurance? They are out of Ontario it think. I’m trying to get insurance for my Mx5200 and having some trouble. I live down a private road and would like to be able to use my tractor to help with maintaining the road but I’m not willing to if I’m not going to be cover.

Just at first glance, it looks like a ridiculously oversized implement for the size of the loader. Just because it will fit on the loader doesn't mean you should do so. My prediction is you're going to do some expensive damage to the loader/tractor if you keep using it that way. A tractor is not a bulldozer.
Morning Ed and thanks for sharing your thoughts. The B is sized for 60" implements/attachments and the Kubota dealer recommended it (and sold it to me). I'm still kind of new to tractors (only 4 years) but I figure if the dealer says it is the right size for the tractor, then it should be ok . He is holding the 7 year warranty on it. :)) Have a good one!
