Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker are two of The Washington Post’s leading reporters. Their Pulitzer Prize-winning work covered NSA spying, Secret Service misconduct and Donald Trump’s unprecedented 2016 campaign.
Now, Leonnig and Rucker are focusing on the unorthodox Trump presidency. Their new book, A Very Stable Genius: Donald J. Trump’s Testing of America, is a fresh report on the Trump presidency. A Very Stable Genius argues that rather than being an accidental creature of chaos, Trump’s first term is a careful and purposeful pattern of disorder. Drawing on in-depth interviews, firsthand witnesses and previously never before seen material, Leonnig and Rucker explored how Trump has shaken up alliances, reinvented the presidency and compromised the integrity of American institutions such as the FBI.
Join us for an important conversation as Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker tackle the unique case of the Trump presidency.

First, Carol and Phil, top-notch as always. The interviewer whose name I've already forgotten, just left me cold. Her forced laugh, her Milliennial use of the word "like" (which drives me crazy) her harsh tone of voice. I only stuck with it because Carol and Phil were so good. As I write this, Trump has been out 2 months, thankfully. The damage that criminal did is still being calculated. I don't think our country as a democracy could have survived a second term.

@@phyllisneal8687 Hello Phyllis, your reply made me LOL!! And I thank you for that because there's little to laugh about these days IMO. Nevertheless, there are things to be thankful for -- the brilliant minds that created the vaccines, in fact vaccines in general. I'm very militant about vaccines. I'm an older "Boomer" and therefore was a child before there were vaccines for polio and measles and chickenpox. Measles nearly killed me in first grade, and I knew other kids that had polio but were saved by a brilliant, dedicated pediatrician in our small town. I know I'm getting off track a bit here, and I ask your indulgence for a moment, but for me anyway, the topics of vaccines and the insanity of moron Trump and his ridiculous followers are bound together like the victims of a Boa Constrictor. Thank you for agreeing about the Commonwealth moderator - come on Commonwealth, you can do better - and you usually do. Your shows are wonderful, I feel blessed to have come upon them in CZcams which IMO is one of the Internet's greatest creations. I just finished reading this book and the book "Unmaking the Presidency" I'm not directly shocked by what is revealed in these books, mostly because I keep myself updated on US politics on a daily basis and see for myself how unhinged Trump really is. What I'm more shocked by is how in the world 40% of American people could vote and still support such an unfit person in office. And now, after 3 years having experienced all of Trumps lies, corruption, abusiveness, etc still manage to support him. I'm not from America, though I spent my youth years in the US, I still cannot understand what is happening there. What do people see in Trump? Do such a large portion of Americans lack basic civic education and understanding of society? Are they just plainly stupid and easily misled by the lies? The majority of the rest of the world sees how unfit Trump is and how he is ruining the nation and the danger Trump is to the rest of the world. It seems like Trumps voters are from the wrong side of the bell-curve. Now with this impeachment going on, Americans have been given a 2nd chance to correct the mistake from the last election. After Trump got voted impeached, he also needs to be removed from the office. The task of cleaning up all the mess left after Trump will take decades.

Sadly, I believe there is a mixture of brainwashing, racist bias, frustration like we all have with Govt. ineptness, and then a huge dose of ignorance/stupidity preyed upon and manipulated incredibly well by right wing media shills & partisans. I'm American, born in Texas, & like many, I have family who are 110% on the trump train...smart, successful, intelligent, caring, giving, loving people i've known all my life. ....and i just cannot understand their continued devotion to a corrupt, inept, unfit, mentally deficient, incurious, lazy, divisive, dangerous "president" in any way. I've seen people who's lives are being upturned because trump is trying to take their land to build his fucking wall and tho they are fighting him to protect their property against a specious claim of eminent domain, these same people also say they support him & would vote for him again....?
How the hell does, CAN,.. anyone address that level of brain damage.

Norman Mortensen. I am still reading their book - the kindle version wasn't deliverable until the end of January in the UK, although I ordered it the day it was published. Like you, I am not entirely 'shocked' by what I read, after all a lot of it is just giving detail and texture to incidents of which we have already heard, but there is still enough jaw dropping information to be extraordinary.
I am particularly pleased that Rucker and Leonnig confirm something I have adopted as routine. That Tillerson did call Trump "a phucking moron" so, I now refer to him as The Phucking Moron - it seems to fit. I am a big reader, always have been, but I have never bought 'political books' - not until now. I have bought and read so many books about The Phucking Moron's first few years in office and the campaign, yet have never read a republican't, fact filled, rebuttal of any of them. Because they don't and cannot exist.
As for the last few questions, about why do apparently rational people support The Phucking Moron? Almost everyone knew he was going to lose the 2016 election, everyone., even Trump himself. But not all of them knew the Russians were working very hard on his behalf and organisations like Cambridge Analytica were giving them hard information as to the very odd confluence of circumstances of that election.
The Deplorables, of course, loved him. Everyone else - including the GOP and McConnell - hated him, because he was an idiot. When he won, because of the Russians, he was still an idiot, but now he was THEIR idiot. They stick with him because they have nowhere else to go and simply cannot see he is destroying them, while he destroys America.
One day, America will thank people like Rucker and Leonnig.

But 45 is nowhere benevolent - just a deluded self centred individual that plays the race card with such acumen and clarity and that keeps invigorating his supporters/voters with identical and deplorable Nazi leanings. We've learned that 1/3 of America's inhabitants are on this wave length even today and that is the scariest thing..... the die hard Pence(and family) who isn't /wasn't safe from 45's rioting mob is a case in point, but the former VP's allegiance to Trump has not wavered to this day.

In the Zelinsky call, Trump could not rise above the level of politician to that of impartial President. The fact that all but one US Senator could not rise above politics in the impeachment trial eliminates all but one for Presidential contender. I hope that is memorable for the country, but I doubt it.

I could not disagree more with the idea that Trump should not be prosecuted for the crimes he committed prior to or after his election. If we want to avoid criminal and corrupt individuals from holding the highest office in our land, then we need to stop giving them a pass. He should be prosecuted as any other American would. Secret service can stand outside his cell to protect him. Failure to hold him accountable would only preserve and protect him from his true actions, while failing to protect all citizens of this country as well as our Constitution.

If the book is as well written as their responses to all the questions and their thoughts around Trump, his entourage and his major shortcomings, it must be a good one! I'm not American, but like everyone else in the world been deeply affected by his so called "presidency". Incredible that he had to ask the obvious; wether he had been legally elected or not. We all remember him starting out by proclaiming he had had a much larger amount of attendees than Obama. What a joke!! The man is a walking disaster.

    • @korismith3293
      @korismith3293 Před 2 lety +2

I believe the title is a based on a direct quote from Mr. Trump. If I'm not mistaken, it was from a series of a statements he made while adressing policy and agenda issues on the campaign trail in 2016, when he had stated that he (I) alone could fix it. Perhaps more than once and about more than one issue. I feel the title was intended to convey Mr.Trump's inflated and arguably delusional over-confidence in his abiilties and over all competency. At least that's my take away...

@@avesraggiana thats exactly, what I thought! Always high school like in her speech, sometimes to the point, where I could almost see (and hear) in my mind, those brainless bimbos in high school, who always deliberately spoke in this vacant immature way, thinking it made them look sophisticated, rather than just, well, stupid. And its sad, coz if u get past the interviewer's horrendous way of speaking, some of the questions are fairly good, but good god, was that really the best interviewer, they could find. As Nana says, the interviewees are so articulate, which just makes the interviewers immature speech pattern so much more obvious and jarring.
Plus, ofc, I was a nerd in high school, I always found those shallow bimbos, whose height of conversation was usually the latest makeup tips, a waste of time, and I certainly have no desire to relive the years of being forced to listen to these selfabsorbed bird brains wasting half the time in our classes, while somehow being condescending and demeaning to those of us, who actually wanted to learn.
I really wanted to listen to Leonnig and Rucker, but that interviewer made it completely impossible for me to get through the entire interview.
