Nowadays, it is hard to imagine these kinds of scenes playing out in real life-but for Jonna Mendez, a former covert operative in the Soviet Union and former chief of disguise for the CIA, everything from complex disguises to “Spiderman” rappelling technology to high-speed car chases were part of her daily life.
Her new book, The Moscow Rules: The Secret CIA Tactics That Helped America Win the Cold War, recounts the most exciting parts of the job, as well as the moments with the highest stakes for U.S. interests. Together with her co-author and husband Antonio Mendez, she explains the techniques and technologies that helped the Americans get one step ahead of the KGB.

@@tatianalyulkin410 Nobody enforces beliefs on anyone. That's not how it works. Zelenskyy is a political figure, like him or not, nobody cares. Bandera is a rhetorical and historical figure, it has a different meaning for the Ukrainians, they fought against the Nazis and ultimately against the Soviets. Their ancestors had to switch sides, the only option to save the survival of their nation, almost like Norway's people did. This has nothing to do with the well-meaning and healthy people of today's Ukraine.

Fascinating, I will surely read Jonna's book "Moscow Rules". As a Paralegal, I learned the importance of using just the right word, as well as speaking covertly. So I immediately recognized when Jonna did the same thing. Thank you Jonna for your selfless service, and thank you to the Commonwealth Club for sharing this interview.
I've also been made aware of the value of the careful deployment of language, and like you notice the skillful use of words by others, and she's simply brilliant in my opinion, she's a rockstar, and I love her!

I am so sorry for your loss, Jonna. Use "no sweat" underneath the latex masks. It's a topical antipersperant and prevents sweating underneath makeup. It's called "Skin Prep Pro", now...by Mehron. We use it in dance to keep our makeup on stage sweatproof. This should make the latex more comfortable. I can attest this stuff really works well but it dries your skin out, it's best to use it with pancake makeup or underneath a mask.

I have always been independent and not a fan of Trump, can't stand to hear him speak but after what I seen from 2016 till now. It exposed these swamp creatures in DC and especially the media. People like Comey, Clapper, McCade, Rice and especially the Clintons are corrupt as can be. They are the true threat to this country. The four wealthiest counties surround Washington DC. Why are government officials getting stupid rich from lobbyists? These people aren't working for us, they are working for themselves. She said she tries not to get political but slammed Trump and praised Obama. I voted for Clinton the first time and then realized what a piece of garbage he was and especially Hillary. I voted for Bush and realized what an idiot he was and Cheney ran the country from behind the scenes and got us into trillions in debt and lined his pockets from the war contracts. I didn't vote in 2004 because both Bush and Kerry were slime. I voted for Obama his first term then realized what a piece of garbage his truly was. I didn't vote in 2012 because both Obama and Romney were garbage. I don't like Trump but have to be honest in evaluating that he did more for America than any other president. He tried to make life better for the common men, women and especially the country. Looking back at it now if I was in his shoes, I would be cautious of everyone in DC as well. You can't believe everything you read or see these days so who really knows the truth. I am sure he read the briefs, if not the powers that be at the head of these institutions and military would have worked behind the scenes to get him out quickly. It was the head of the NSA who visited him in Trump tower right after the election and informed that the CIA, FBI and Obama administration was spying on him. They found the bugs. People who were involved testified it was true. That is scary that these people did it in the first place and got away with it. What I am seeing is this country is going downhill quickly because of people in power thinking and making stupid decisions only thinking of themselves. The future doesn't look bright from what I am seeing. It is just getting worse and worse and worse. Other folks my age and I discuss these things going on and never would have foreseen what is happening 20, 30 and especially 40 years ago. We all agree that we feel sorry for our kids and grandkids because they are in for a world of hurt. It is going to get bad, very bad. Maybe that's what we need so we can wake up and turn it around or parish because we lost our way. Either way of the outcome, we here in the US are in for a world of hurt. It's coming.
I too am non partisan. I found obamas speach on his presidential order about a "special transition team" to be alarming. People didnt believe me that something weird was about to happen. Then it did.
The speech is hard to find now, but it was one of his last. To look for what he wrote, it turns out that presisential orders (not executive orders) are extremely classified and most do not even list the title, and many do not even list its number. However the same page (whitehouse dot gov) does admit they are sequencially ordered so when a number is listed, you know how many have been written since.
I just did not expect 4 years of media attack. I eected something simply with the transition and beginning like an immediate attack and removal. I already had issues with changes in the news since bush, and this cemented it as it got 100 times worse overnight
Imagine having the money to retire doing whatever you want. You have a loving family, your health and because of your success and love of country you decide to run for President in order to help/protect/give back to the forgotten families in our great Republic. The working folks. AKA the deplorables.
Keep imagining what President Trump must have felt when the head of the NSA, Admiral Mike Rogers, met with him and told him he/his campaign had been spied on by the same folks that swore an oath to serve and protect this great nation from enemies foreign and DOMESTIC.
The top dogs in our government agencies saw what one man could possibly pull off by getting elected and calling them out...Comey, Brennan, Rosenstein, and the Clinton machine to name a few. He could upset the apple cart like no other.
No more lining each others pockets. It must have been terrifying for them. Democrats AND Republicans as they are all alike. Uniparty sound familiar?
Imagine a man capable of ENDING and NOT starting new wars (first time in 40 years) and bringing home our soldiers. Our young men and women not being killed and maimed for change.
Imagine how embarrassed ALL those diplomats must have been when President Trump went over their heads exposing their uselessness and made real the possibility of peace in the middle east.
Many of the above successes surprised even those of us that voted for President Trump.
Imagine, that for once in many, many years, you were told the truth repeatedly and chose to turn your back.

The shit that would have tainted the agency's name were destroyed as ordered by the director. He even is quoted as saying to destroy the evidence that would be detrimental to the agency. They likely killed innocent civilians in attempts to learn how to control the mind and make manchurian candidates.

When you watch Soviet war movies, you're like, " Those agents have the nerves of Vibranium " because when they interact with the German officers it's like they truly believe they've come to liberate " us " from the Bolsheviks. I was totally believing her until she referred to the Canadian Ambassador becoming rich and famous over it. Which he did. However, it wasn't for getting the six hostages OUT that we Canadians accepted the main kudos but that the Canadian Ambassador hid them in his home in Tehran for MONTHS, putting his life, his family's life and all the Canadian Embassy staff on the line everyday, while the Whitehouse left the six "Houseguests" in our care and focused on the main hostages.What I find fascinating is that out of the six American Houseguests, five of them went public (writing books and giving interviews) after the movie Argo came out to set the record straight because they felt the Canadians didn't get ENOUGH credit. Plus, the entire Canadian Government (all THREE of our parties with very different ideologies) held an immediate session of Parliament behind closed doors (an illegal act in Canada) and UNANIMOUSLY agreed to keep our embassy in Tehran open for as long as it took, even though the American Embassy staff were all hostages too and the other embassies closed and bailed out for fear for their lives. The Kiwis (New Zealand) had a tiny, tiny embassy but stayed open too in order to help with the six Houseguests (surveillance and support) and Tony Mendez did his work prepping for the "exfil" cover story of the Canadian film crew mostly here in our Clandestined Operations unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Dept in Ottawa. What's my point? Think about it. This woman has spent her entire life working for the CIA and they told her, "Okay. Go ahead and tell the truth on the internet." Of course not. She's feeding us half truths and disinformation. And doing it very well. Like I said at the beginning, I was totally accepting her sincerity and words until they came up against the facts that I know as a Canadian. Now I know why she did her job so well. I am usually SO suspicious of everyone but I'm actually quite amazed that I didn't even question what she was saying until it came in direct conflict with the truth. She truly is a master. She would have to be to keep so many people alive. It's weird. I don't respect her LESS for lying so well but MORE. What a fearful world we live in that it is this way. Now it's not just the Communists that are a threat anymore but a terrorist on every street corner. I'm a Behaviorist. Trained to spot lying. I read "Master of Disguise" and "Spy Dust". Both are fascinating and revealing. At a meeting with the late Ambassador Eugene Douglas who was in Moscow in his former capacity as an intelligence officer around the time of the episode where a swimmer with rebreathing gear exfiltrated the foreign agents via the Kremlin storm drains - I asked the late ambassador if that operation actually happened. His reply was nonverbal - a very sincere and yet slight nod to the affirmative. I didn't ask any more operational questions. Intelligence officers have written memoirs that are a peek inside their unique world. My reading list is long. Kudos for your service!

Regarding face recognition, I was smiling when I programmed face recognition into my new iPad. If I don’t do the same smile when I turn it on, it doesn’t know me. I also quickly found out I needed to record myself with/without glasses for it to know me both ways...though the appearance of my hair seems to not matter. Still, because it only lets me record myself twice, its face recognition capabilities seem very limited.
This has proved true for all our new Mac and android devices.
How does face recognition in cities compare?
How much does networking devices with each other and connecting them to online resources improve recognition? Why does my expensive tech suck at it so badly? Also, could someone fool my device with a truly good mask while mimicking my smile?
I’d think that facial recognition would work best on the 95+% of people who don’t normally think about surveillance or have any immediate or compelling reason to disguise themselves. I bet that adding a human watching a video still greatly improves its usefulness even if it’s not practical.
Clark Kent/Superman could easily fool my new iPad, but could he really trick a human? As a quick change master, he’d fool the casual observer, but what about long-time friends? I think it would be a fun experiment.

From what I can tell, she was on tour with her book during this period and simply packed (and wore) the easiest, simplest, most effective looking outfits. Just makes sense. If you need something more, you buy it locally.
She dealt with the KGB in Moscow during the cold war. She's a national treasure. Good luck meeting her.
Ive seen her in a cream coloured jacket and and all brown/ bronze ensemble. Her outfits for speaking events and what not seem tailored and high quality so I imagine she wears them more than once. And to add to that i doubt flashy and materialistic are typical character traits for a cia agent. She is all class this lady. Much respect!

I read the book. Comment about The battery guy. You got 2 guys mixed up (combined into one). George was the one with long blonde hair, but he did not wear sandals & white socks. That was Tyler, the other battery guy. The other thing was about the Christmas party. It was an OTS tradition, a major production, way before the Price brothers came onto the scene. The Price brothers did push the tradition after it went out of vogue 30 years later. The other thing about that was it was not done to promote the "trademark"; it was done as an engineering exercise to further knowledge. All the other engineers waited until a requirement came in to "start designing" & working on "the problem". The Price brothers created problems to work on so when the real problems came in, they could hit the ground with feet running. Typically, a new engineering area explored either at the party or as hobby was in use officially within 6 months.
I wonder what her job was before she was chief of disguise. I'm currently aiming for paramilitary operations officer but if I can find out what her job was I'll definitely switch my dreams to that one.

You do realize that the same people writing those briefs are the same deep state actors that were spying on his campaign and working against him? We have the email correspondence. We know the truth now. He knew he couldn't trust them. You may write all that off as "conspiracy theory," because you're an insider and know the real truth, but that's what he believes. I think we can both agree on that. So if you were president and believed the "deep state" (the people in positions of power in the CIA, NSA, FBI etc.) were against you, would you read the briefs?

She doesn't say it when he says the best case scenario for a caught spy is the gulag, but she's very clear elsewhere, that never happened. The only outcome for a caught spy, after interrogation, was death. Execution. There were, if I understand her rightly, no prison sentences for traitors, spies, not with Russia. Never. A bullet in the back of the skull and an unmarked grave was the best they could expect.
I guess the only difference between a best and worse case exposure and capture was in the degree and duration of torture one had to endure before being walked down to the cellar of the KGB prison.

Most of it is declassified info. She's repeating stuff you can look up, but she does a much better job of it than most of us can just by reading and looking at FOIA stuff. She's great.

The true nature of "the" solutions, however, generally ubiquitously involve radically shifting reality paradigms on levels that tend to make the "all-knowing" wise rulers understandably nervous.
Understanding full well, on a practical level, the natures of the functions of genuine proverbial Emperor's New Clothes, "disguise", as discussed in declassified reality paradigm arenas by persons who have experienced reality from within [various levels of] classified reality paradigms, can involve flippantly mentioning current patterns in their methodologies as though those same patterns haven't been reworked in order to forever be the current state-of-the-art that becomes ironically mentioned in any presently-occurring "declassified" public discussion of "old" tricks that become humorous sidenote-seeming comments that become the unwitting transparencies in the authentic Emperor's New Clothes, that are always firstly observable by the groups of individuals and peoples who have become misperceived and oppressed by Emperors. The oppressed begin to recognize patterns in that word-salad-weave that remind them of patterns in the weaves that have been directly defined to have been equivalent Emperor's New Clothes patterns in the past, now believed to be able to be jocularly bantered about in "declassified" settings (as though the different levels of classification literally create securely- bounded levels of esotericism, allowing one to become careless in their wannabe self-superiority.
It is when the oppressed have become accurately enough consciously aware of their own roles in their own oppression that they, the oppressed, will be less likely to fall for the ol' Emperor's New Clothes schtick that never is not in total effect at all times. (Brought to our inevitable-seeming perceptual awareness by Karma. Serving authentic Truth for as long as deception has been "repurposed" to represent the justly-applicable virtuous power to define Truth and know how to serve "justice" such that Authentic Truth is redefined such that it can be deceptively served and protected.

I am pretty sure literally EVERY religous scripture is a unique perspective's attempted expression of their particular collective's metaphoric symbolization of their unique misperceptions that had only seemed to become more accurately perceived as a result of catastrophe (sometimes as severe as literal civilization collapse, although we historically suffer collective-consciousness depression resulting in what is perceived to be the tragic death of a culture that also doesn't actually die just because it suddenly isn't able to be suffocated to malevolence through our anxious subconscious attachment to what we believe we perceive it accurately to be... because we are usually dreadfully slow learners whenever the lesson is actually difficult because actual truth is not determinable by who is left standing after being "number one" at "belonging to" collectives who will insist that narcissistically raging against others who demonstrate existentially threatening disloyalty as defined by the cohort's cult rulers, is the only way to save the cohort from annihilation! Which is needed if you'd like to be capable of perceiving things such as the extreme likelihood that we don't actually fundamentally disagree at all about what we were taught we were "supposed to feel" that we disagree about. If we are actually intelligent enough to actually not need to be told what we should feel and what we should see until we are so god damned unable to squeak out an accurately consciously perceived critical thought that it's just swell that our security is achieved and maintained by ruling cohorts who we believe possess legitimately magical abilities allowing the gloriousness that we, at least in the USA, call "living the fuckin' dream". Where we are inundated by "winner" "successful" types who seek to advance and "make a difference" in what really only "needs" changed due to the continued patterns of ignorances of all previous "rulers" who "oopsied" and gave us the de-fucking-lightful Karmic reality paradigm of today. Yes, all 2 and a half cars with precisely one gallon of gasoline that cost a realistic $3.459 is just... right here awaiting our worthiness to be able to wallow in it.
