    It's just a little gut-punching to realize just how young she was when you saw the size difference between her and her parents. Throughout the game, she was always so big and imposing, but when she cuddles up to her parent, you get to see just how small she is

    • @johncronk8867
      @johncronk8867 Před 3 lety +57

      Oh my goodness you’re right. She always seems so big but it’s only because of her wings. When you compare her without them, she is easily oversized or tied in size with characters from both games.

    I really like that they went a more realistic, if much more tragic, route with shrieks ending. The fact is a lot of people cannot be turned away from their own inner darkness with a simple showing of kindness. Many people get so far gone that they will choose to remain in that darkness. It's all they know after a point.
    That being said I give the game credit for taking a irredeemable, corrupt character like shriek and still making you feel sorry for her in the end. All that she ever wanted was to feel some kind of love and acceptance from someone, but the closest she ever got in her life was to die in the arms of her parents dead corpses.

      @weirdalfanatic2788 How can she choose to be saved, if all she gets is this one little moment where she was not killed by an enemy? I think she didn't even realize what was happening. She was afraid of the light and attacked first, because it is the only kind of interaction she knows. Then the light hurts her, confirming her first impression that she needs to be afraid of it. She expects a second attack from the light but it is not coming, so she uses the moment to distract her enemy and flee. She was in pain and in survival mode, so there was no chance of her noticing what Ori did. Also, none of the creatures in the forest ever tried to contact her, they chose to ignore her until she was to strong and to much in pain to be contacted. So it really wasn't her choice to not be saved, it was the forests choice to not help her and to let her die inside. It really pissed me off about this game, that it acted as if it was Shrieks fault for not seeing this one tiny gesture after a lifetime of being alone and having to kill to survive.

    • @HaggisOfDeath
      @HaggisOfDeath Před 8 měsíci +1

      So it is with most people in real life who are considered 'evil'. That's why this game is such a masterpiece. There's always a path that leads to corruption, and many people who end up on it do so through no fault of their own. Bad experiences, cruelty from others, neglect, loneliness, physical disabilities; all of these things can damage a person, and lead them down a path of despair and sadness that ends in hatred and a desire to hurt everyone else, who they have now deemed their tormenters, or the enablers of their tormenters who equally deserve that punishment. Politicians, educators and bad story-writers have impressed upon many the idea that some people are just evil inside, and point to certain actions of theirs as justification, never bothering to look into why they performed those actions. The other brave and honest thing this game did was show that by the time someone who could help her actually came along, it was too late; and so it is with many people in real life, and for the good of everyone else they, who are themselves the victims of so much, need to be got rid of.

      I've seen it happen unfortunately to someone too the person in question, she was special needs too mentally not all up there and her parents abused her I told her that she could have run away after 18 but she didn't. She could have gotten away! She endured endless trauma I told her that she herself had a solid case to sue both her parents with witnesses! Her other siblings saw this and were horrified by the monster she had become exactly like her father wanted her to be. In many ways she's exactly like shriek, and I don't often say this about many people I know but a absolute monster of a human being who shouldn't ever have kids because she would end up killing it. Its not mental competence at this point its the fact she's incapable of moving beyond it because she's consumed by the darkness of being forced to live outside on a porch like some sort of animal. If the details are that vivid and can be coorberated then its no lie. She couldn't comprehend what kindness was she wasn't able to understand social standards of being a reasonable person to that ends she was completely beyond my help, or the help of any therapist unfortunately. I avoid her because I know what she could do and her words do not inspire anything but fear.

    Poor Shriek. I have so much sympathy for her. And did anyone else notice that the moon shining on her egg was the only thing keeping her warm?(Idk I may be wrong about that)
    Shriek’s deformed look made her look like a threat to the mother owls and the Moki. Being ostracized, she went back to ash and dust, her heart turning into stone.
    Getting attacked by Seir just further proved her mindset to reject the warmth. Ori stopping Seir wasn’t enough to change her.
    She still saw NO reason to accept it after getting defeated by Ori. But I understand that. Not everyone can be saved in this world. Some fall so low to the point where they don’t want help or can be changed. Shriek is one of those people.
    She curled up in her parent’s skeletal wings and laid there, closing her eyes. Her past is tragic and sad, her deformed looks making her look like a threat to species. But all she wanted was to be loved and have warmth.
    She became a villain after that terrible event, lost and pitiful.

      at 3:30 Shriek isn't even going for the kill yet, she just stands there for a few seconds staring at Ku, before deciding to kill her.
      I think Shriek was genuinely thinking about what to do with Ku, if she should spare her or get rid of her. Ku's insistence on trying to antagonise her probably triggered a painful memory on how she was rejected as a child. Unable to process the emotional pain as an adult, Shriek did the only thing she knew how to get rid of said pain; get rid of its source, and that source was Ku in that moment, thus prompting her decision to stomp on her.

    Kuro lost everything. Shriek never had anything to begin with. Both of their tales are tragic ones, of anger brought by sadness. Both of them were wronged by the world merely for trying to live.
    Baur describes Shriek as a "pitiful" creature. In contemporary speak, the word "pitiful" is often used as an insult for a person we don't like. But Baur uses the word in its purest definition: one deserving of pity. Kuro's last moments were those of a hero. Shriek spent her final moments alone. Shriek's story is indescribably sorrowful.

    Kuro teaches that you shouldn’t jump to conclusions about someone’s actions until you know the whole story.
    Shriek teaches that sometimes people are too far gone to be saved and are born into, live in, and die in circumstances they don’t deserve. A much harder lesson to swallow, but an important one.
    The silver lining is even in those cases, many others will survive and get to move on. Though she couldn’t be saved, knowing how compassionate Ori is I’m sure they kept her in their heart even after they fought, and probably even left a tribute to her of some kind somewhere in Niwen.

    I always wanted to play these games, but never made it priority. I’m glad I finally did. It was one of the most beautifully made games I’ve ever played, and with Shriek in particular, one of the most emotionally challenging. I wasn’t ready for it at all.

    Shriek is one of those villains who got recluded by their own sibling because of their difference. That's tragic, but sadly common.
    About her design. It's a very cool one. Her wings can be used as a second pair of legs (some very big and humanoid like legs).

    I think the best place for Shriek to feel a sense of belonging is Planet Zebes. Or at least it could serve as a quarantine for her preffered activities...

    looked like a monster, treated like a monster and became a monster. shriek never knew love or compassion so she lashed out at ori when they tried to offer it and at the end she dies in the embrace of her dead parents the only time she felt loved. no one deserves to have a life like that

  • @jonnaas
    @jonnaas Před 2 měsíci

    Shriek had a very overdone backstory trope, sure, but the way it was made is so GOOD. Usually the bad guy himself tells the story and has like an epiphany and everyone starts comforting him, but the story is told by a completely different person, shriek is still a threat and shriek is still filled with hatred. Usually the backstory is where the story ends. with a happy ending. But shriek's backstory was halfway in, and her ending was of the saddest endings for a character i've literally seen in my life.

    • @jurassicbread4279
      @jurassicbread4279 Před 3 lety +25

      Ori is an embodiment of light, which is a very similar thing to warmth and love in this world. Ori reminded Shriek of that, causing her to feel immense hate toward Ori. Plus, that’s just on top of the fact that when in the Silent Woods, Shriek is just protecting the home, while in other times, she’s probably pissed that Ori brought an owlet (her kin that rejected her) into her home as well

    • @kalesmart1
      @kalesmart1 Před 2 lety +10

      Shriek hates light and also hates her kind, Shriek learned that power and fear was the only way she was accepted in this world, she is clearly scarred with trauma and is hyper sensitive to sound and movement as shown when she drops her food to hunt when ori makes a loud snap of those sticks, she can't stand it, essentially your seeing a creature born of corruption who was so traumatised it lives in perpetual suffering and also inflicts suffering itself. Brutal

    Honestly i really liked shrieks story because the whole time i was scared they were gonna just pull a kuro 2, especially in the brief moment of calmness when ori stops seir, so to see them pull a very realistic and depressing ending with her suprised me and i kinda prefer it over kuro's, idk i always prefer villains so far off the deep end that they cannot be pulled back, handsome jack i think is a perfect example of this.
    I also like how they ended up making her sort of the foil to kuro, one accepts the light and is redeemed while the otber rejects it and is alone to the end.
    Also at 3:00 , genuine chills with that music, christ.
