Also, it was still fresh in my mind as a few weeks previously I did actually hit the wrong green 😂 I should have known it was the wrong green when I reached a par 5 in regulation 😂

I agree. I have more bad days than good. 1 day I drive well and the rest of my game goes south. Other days I can’t drive for nuts but my irons work well. Nature of this game
Haha I can certainly relate to that. I don’t think I’ve ever had a single round where I was happy with all facets of my game. There’s always one part that will let ya down. But we convince ourselves that perfect round is just around the corner 😂
For every one of you there are 10 low handicapped golfers who hate the fact we are out there because we are apparently ruining their self entitled frat boy experience.
Don't worry about what anyone else thinks, you've paid the same green fee as everybody else, and that's why golf has the handicap system, so people of all abilities can play together.
Thankfully in Ireland we don't seem to have an issue with Frat Boy culture on the course, very rarely would you see anyone drinking on the course, if ever.
Two shots in and I'm hooked. I'm tired of seeing expert golfers all the time. Oh no! The dreaded four-putt😂

Excellent video. I play off around the same as you and watching your round is really reminiscent of my own experiences on the course. Being a high handicapper our "just about ok" shots leave us with really difficult lies from all manner of odd places on the course. You seemed to play really well though, especially on the greens, and what a beautiful course!

Yes, we’re often out of position and dealing with tricky lies which just seems to make the holes that bit harder. But thanks, I thought for about 70% of the round I played quite well but a few holes let me down. Was happy with my chipping and putting overall. Thanks for watching Ian 👍🏻
From an ex Dublin golfer . I played the Wicklow g / course a few times as an 18 h / cap . You got the picture of the course spot on . I never scored well on it & even lost a six iron after a fit of petulance . My head always got in my way , my biggest problem . I did manage to get down to 13 at one stage , but finished up last year as a 29 . I got my head , eventually together , but medical problems set in . Vertigo , followed by balance & blackouts . I really do miss the game & would love to get out again . Golf really is a game for life .
You sound a lot like Padraig Harrington , not a bad man to take after .

It really is a game for life. I feel like I got into it a little later than I would have liked but hopefully I have decades ahead of me 😃 If only I played like Padraig as much as I sound like him 😂

speaking as an avid golfer from the United States, who usually shoots in the mid 90's, I can't imagine just how much effort this was to continually set up the camera on every shot and still concentrate on your game....keep these videos coming and my only recommendation for any future on course golf videos is when editing, if possible, display your yardage after hitting each shot.... this would give viewers a little better insight into your club selection.....thanks for taking the time to create this very interesting and entertaining golf video on a beautiful course !!!

Brilliant video, Jamie, congratulations and thanks for sharing! You played some great golf out there on a wonderful course, especially scoring well on your earlier holes. I have a similar experience that there’s always a major drop off at some point (lost balls, two out of the bunker, fluffed shot) that adds a lot to the score. I guess thats why we are high handicappers! Anyway I will try to follow your lead and keep smiling!
Thanks a million John, appreciate the message 👍🏻 I always find I play about 66% of holes like a 15 handicapper but unfortunately I play the other 33% like a 35 handicapper 😂 It’s hard to be consistent over the 18 holes and stupid mistakes creep in. But now I’m just all about enjoying my time on the course, be it good or bad. Although I still keep telling myself I’ll get there some day 😂 the joys of a high handicapper eh?

As a high handicapper, I feel your pain here on a few of those shots, I use hole19 when i play and find it great for looking ahead on the course and for club selection. keep up the good work Jamie.
Thanks very much David. I use Hole 19. It’s a great app. Unfortunately I use my phone for filming so can’t access the app when making these videos. My plan is to upgrade my equipment soon to a dedicated camera so then at least I’ll be able to use my phone and Hole 19 for GPS once I do. Thanks for watching 👍🏻

I used to be 19, slipped to 28 as i get older. My last round had an 8, 2x7's but the rest added up to 71. So a 93 and 21 over.

The swings where you follow through with your shoulders tend to be great strikes. Don't "give up" on a swing halfway through, finish your swings! And as always, weight forward when you finish! Love the video, love the game. Great positive attitude out there.
Yeah I have an awful tendency to get all my weight on my right hand side, get stuck and swing from there 🤦🏻♂️

Nice to see a high handicapper putting their round up. Makes it easier to see what some of us are doing wrong. Your backswing looks ok but then your downswing is very steep and out to in. I struggle with the same problem. I "feel" like im not doing it, but i am. Thats why you see some shots going straight left on contact, because you catch it square on that path. Then other times you leave the face open and it goes right, so its very confusing until you step outside yourself and see it. Im confident if you watch plenty of your own footage you could probably get into the 15 handicap range pretty quickly like I am with a few swing tweaks.

Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it 😃 Yeah I just felt the course was a little tight and lots of blind shots so thought it would be quite dangerous for me to hit my driver 😂 Was concentrating on just tryna keep the ball straight and in play (which didn’t always work 😂). Wasn’t too disappointed with the 101. Very tough course and I lost a few balls to be fair. Overall I still think my game has improved.

That is a beautiful course and considering you got caught out by some hidden traps, by not having played the course before, I though you did pretty well. I loved your reactions when you got those pars. It would be interesting to see you play it again and then compare your scores. You didn't seem to know some of the hole layouts and yardages? Have you thought of an app to show you, or do you use your phone to film. Thanks for the work you put into making these for us, we really enjoy them. (PS You still played that better than I would have done at the moment!)

I too thought the course was absolutely beautiful. I don’t live too far away so will definitely head back for round 2 😄 Will hopefully shoot better because as you said, I struggled on a few holes to know where I was going. So many blind shots.
Unfortunately I use my phone for filming so can’t use my GPS apps. Will probably upgrade to a dedicated camera soon so can go back to using my phone on the course then 👍🏻

I love your attitude towards the game, to me it doesn't matter what handicap you are, it's about enjoying it. I play off 9.4 and just love going for a round of golf most Saturday Mornings.
Thanks Jonathan. I’ve learned that’s what golf’s all about. Just enjoy yourself. You’ll have good days and bad days but there’s worse things you could be doing or worse places you could be than out on a beautiful golf course.

Yeah I’ve actually had a few to be fair, not that you’d know 😂 Haven’t had one in a while though. We had a baby this year so wasn’t playing regularly enough for it to seem worthwhile but hoping to play more regularly next year so might look at it again 👍🏻

You’re already way better than me. One thing I’ll say we have in common is you seem to hit the ball pretty fast after addressing the ball for your final setup and maybe going too fast. When I take more time it isn’t a guarantee I’ll hit it better but the odds increase slightly. Anyway, please don’t take this as advice as I’m in no position to give it, just an observation from a worse golfer. Nice vid. 🤙🏼

Hi Alex, normally I would use an App on my phone for distance and hazard info but when I make these videos I use my phone to record so slightly hamstrung at the moment when filming. For this video I only had the hole information such as distance, par and stroke index on my card so was essentially playing blind. Hi. Just some useful tip, you have a in to out motion on your backswing. You need to reverse that to stop going left.

I've only been playing properly for 6 months and consistently shoot 103 regardless of the day or course. I cannot translate my practice sessions onto the course. It probably is 99% mental. But I also don't understand why every club in my bag only goes 100 yards if I'm lucky. No change I ever make makes a difference.
Hi mate, to be honest, to consistently shoot 103 after only 6 months is very impressive. Breaking 100 is the first big milestone for most golfers and you're already on the cusp of that. So I wouldn't be too hard on yourself.
I often struggle with taking my range practice out on the course but I find the biggest issue is being too nervous and stiff. Once I learned to relax on the course, stay nice and loose and swing smooth, it started to mirror my range swing. I still struggle myself but the more tense you get the worse you swing.

Well that was thoroughly enjoyable. I’m a bit higher than you and reckon some of those 1 putts would have been 2 easily for me. 34, while being 32 through 14 and going 11 over on the last 4 is a pretty good score. Something about seeing nice golf without all the hoopla and seeing the duffs and chips. Course management was solid.

Yeah I was pretty happy with the score considering how I started and finished. But that sums up my game really.
I played holes 5-14 quite well, scoring 26 points - an average of 2.6 per hole for 10 holes. If I I did that for 18 it would be 47 points 😂 Just couldn’t maintain it.
But that’s golf, particularly high handicap golf. The bad holes ruin any chance of a really good score.

This is probably a very basic question I should know the answer to, but what scoring system are you using to get the ‘points’ on each hole? I like the idea of getting something on a double/triple bogey!
Most of the time I enjoy the golf anyway but it’s a little disheartening to have nothing really to show at the end. Think this score system could help!!
Hi Matt, glad you enjoyed the video 😄 And well done on getting yourself involved in golf, I know how daunting it can be at the start but I’ve found it’s a great way to spend a few hours and meet new people.
It’s the Stableford Scoring System. I think it’s the most popular scoring system Ireland and the UK and it’s a great system, particularly for beginners because as you mentioned, you can still score points on doubles and triples etc.
The basic scoring system (for a scratch golfer) is 1 for Bogey, 2 for Par, 3 for birdie and so on. You get 0 for a double bogey.
So for an 18 handicap let’s say, a Par 3 becomes a Par 4 as they have an extra shot on each hole. If they get a 4, they get 2 points. Despite getting a bogey in real terms, they’ve scored a Net Par using their handicap hence the 2 points.
It can take a little bit of time to get used to but there’s a great app called Hole 19 that I’d recommend using while you get the hang of it. You simply type in the course, the coloured tees and your handicap, and then when you record each score, it will automatically work out how many points you scored on each hole.

I watch this in envy. I am a 10 hcp former 6 hcp and I watch that much PGA on TV I compare my golf to these guys on the course and hate my game and standard, worlds angriest golfer. I'd love to just play, enjoy it, not have such ridiculous expectation and be happy.
Well first and foremost congrats on the handicap 👏🏼 I’m about three years into golf now and I’ve just learned to try and enjoy the round no matter what. You will have good rounds & bad rounds so no point worrying. At the start, I used to drive myself insane because I wasn’t improving as fast as I would like. But now I just enjoy playing, and hopefully the improvement will come eventually.
I do often wonder if low handicappers enjoy the game though, as when I play with some of them, unless they’re birding every hole (which is obviously very rare) they seem to be detesting it 😂 Maybe high handicap golf is actually bliss? 😂

This is a course that has gone under the radar for my research into Irish courses. Looks good though, Have you plaed Woodenbridge or St Margarets? They are both on the list to play when I next on that side of Ireland
Yeah it was a beautiful course. Location is stunning. No I haven’t but they’re both regarded as top courses. I’d imagine I’ll feature Woodenbridge on the channel sooner rather than later as it’s in Wicklow also 👍🏻
You have a nice swing and when it works it really works, enjoyed watching you battle yourself. You do seem to whip your wrists during transition, like you're trying to skim a stone. Suspect if you can quieten the hands/wrists at top of swing you'll gain some consistency. No guarantees mind.

Just like many others, you do the practise swing before every shot just perfectly but the actual swing shot is little messed up.

Great watch and well done. Was looking look after you went charging round the green like a yank at the Ryder cup 😂 then the high handicap kicked in at the end. Still thought your ball striking and course planning was good. One question - do you hit the driver ok ?
Haha that was pure adrenaline. Knew it was in all the way and couldn’t help myself. Most people celebrate like that after a birdie or eagle but not the humble high handicapper 😂

I’m normally reasonably reliable with driver. This is the first time I’ve ever kept it in the bag for the full round. But because the course was quite tight and difficult to see the next shot, I was really just trying to prioritise hitting it straight. The next time I go back I’ll definitely whip out driver on a good few holes 👍🏻

That course looked pretty nice.
I've been playing 6 months and am almost as terrible as you. LOL
I can play a Sand Iron or a 60 degree wedge and pitch from 50 yards or less landing almost exactly where I want it and will end up with a good chance of sinking the resulting putt ( most of the time) The rest of the time I flop it up in the air and land it 3 yards in front chunk it or thin it through the green and that's where I drop my shots. The sensible or safe shot is a 7 or 8 iron bump and run. And knowing the shot to play and when is key.
Shooting in the 90s is all about percentage play. If you can take 8 iron 99/100 and knock it to 6 feet that's better than knocking it to 3 feet 1 out of 20 times. To 10feet 5x 20 feet 4x on the green somewhere 5x duffing 3x and thinning 2x into bunker bushes woods pond lake or rough. Likewise the shot you played between the trees. OK you kind of got away with it but a chip onto the fairway is the smart play. At the level we play (24-28HC) Hazards are a game killer. Bunkers are usually pretty well positioned to catch out those that think they can get over them. And you'll find that the ones just ahead of that are just the right distance to catch the escape from the previous one you can easily add 2 or 3 strokes to a hole like that.
When you hit into trouble as much as it hurts your ego you aren't Tiger Woods.You are never going to pull of a 170 yard shot from a bunker or the rough. you might pull it off 1in 20 or 30 times of trying but more often than not you will just hit into even more trouble with just an unlikely chance of hitting decent shot the next time.. You are always far better of leaving the ego in the car park and playing a high lofted club and chipping 5, 10 or 20 yards forward sideways or backwards into the middle of the fairway. At least then you'll have the best lie to be able to stand a chance of hitting a shot towards the green in a controlled way and avoiding trouble. We all do it after slicing a drive into the right rough and we start to think I've got 145yards left on a par I need to get this near the green before shanking the 2nd shot 10foot into the 2nd cut.Then you think damn this is now my 3rd shot this needs to either go 3 feet away to save par, before you then slice or hook it 40 yards left or right of the green.
You'll be making 6 or 7 if you're lucky.
Had you taken you medicine and chipped the second shot 20 feet onto the fairway you would very likely put your 3rd shot on the green with 2 putts bogey and an outside chance of making par. Look at it this way If you bogey every hole you're playing off 18.
Not 3 putting is key. I happen to be pretty good a putting and would put money on me getting 6 foot or less putts, and I'd fancy myself to hole 10-15 footers ( at least be close enough to get the blood racing) but the way I treat anything longer than that (even from the other side of the green) is Get the speed right and leave it 3 feet or less away. If it finishes 6 foot I've still got a very good chance of holing it. I tend to not spent too much time on long putts reading greens
Unless there is an obvious swing I'm really only interested in the last 6 or 8 feet.
I usually pick a point 6 inches in front of me that I need to putt over to be on my chosen line I then make practice strokes looking up and down at the hole and ball. When I'm happy with the weight I play my shot. yeah sometimes It doesn't go as planned but mostly it does. And if you're lucky one of those 30 footers might drop.
This time next year I want to be breaking 90 not struggling to keep it under 100 when it all goes wrong.

I feel your pain. My consistency is crap. For every good game I have 3 bad ones. Love your videos though. My club is good. We have a lot of low handicappers and playing with them is no problem with them.
