Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This CZcams channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.

Could you do an episode on mental focusing. Sometimes it’s the mental side that gets me. Anxiety with random players or taking someone’s bad attitude and letting it affect you.
I was 7 under after 10 holes on a course I had never played before. It was the round of my life. Then I hit the pirate ship on 11 and my score tanked from there.
Pirate ships are scary. Thats totally understandable. How did you do going thru the hippo's mouth?

You need to do a ‘top gear’ styled series. Tour golfers playing ‘reasonably priced’ course. See who can go the lowest all playing the Worsley Park! Would be an epic series!! Get a score board going
Damn That's a great idea! Would be fun to watch!
Awesome idea 💡
This is a genius idea!
Apart from his home course not being reasonably priced
Brilliant idea even get the same score board they had on top gear aswel👏🏻
New to golf and never really watched pro golf. Ive never heard of Sam, but he seems like a cool and humble dude. Always willing to joke around and keep it light-hearted, a true professional. Gained a fan today.
He plays on the European tour, I had to look him up because he sounds way more American than English
Welcome to hell buddy
Loved that Sam responds with thank you every time he is praised. Says a lot about his character. Really jumped out at me as watching.
Well bought up and insanely talented.

I also aim for 65 when I'm on the first tee. 72 on the second....
It's only about 1k when I'm done
Exactly what I was thinking when he put down the claim at 65 -- "I can do that on the front nine!"
"It's been a few days since he's hit a ball, and no warmup." Ah yes! The REAL weekend-warrior public course test! Lol. Seriously though my local course is 9 holes, no driving range. For league, you basically get off work, go straight to the course, "warming up" consists of half-assedly stretching and swinging a club around while you have a few sips of your first beer while you're waiting for your turn on the first tee. It's real blue-collar stuff lol.
That's real golf tbh
Sounds amazing!

Thats the only type of golf I know lol
(6 handicap here) This is literally the most educational golf video I've seen in a long time. This teaches a lot about what it takes to be a good player. I really enjoyed seeing the difference in shot set-up habits between his level of play and a regular player. Just curious how good his putting would be if he was on his 4th day of playing the same course and was familiar with the greens. (pro tournament style) Thank you so much for this and please try to get more videos in this style.
67 and another day would easily had 4 more puts.
4 tournament days but it also depends on what tour he’s on. If he’s on one of the bigger tours, they play practice rounds and are on the property several days before Thursday.
Wet greens that haven't been mown !
Also I feel like normal people courses don’t have the insane breaks that the tour courses have. My courses at home have so many straight putts it’s ridiculous. No complaints from me though lol

What a good sport Sam is. In miserable cold and wet conditions, no complaints, no excuses, just a smile and great play. Inspirational stuff for us below average golfers. 👍😀
It’s because he knows that any muni course golfer that would talk crap about his play today he would dog walk them and take their entire bank account heads up. Plus he has nothing to prove to us mere mortals 😂😂😂😂
💯 came across like a great guy
Exactly. When we watch golf, we're watching the 8~10 players (+ Tiger, of course) who are playing GREAT that week . . . meanwhile, another 50+ golfers are playing "mediocre" (for them), which means better than the best player in your club . . . every week.
A pro, plays good-great, on 40+ different courses every year, muscle pains, bad nights of sleep, whatever. Sam is a PRO!
Most peole who play think they are below average golfers but if you shoot 90 or below you are better than average 100%.
Whats hilarious is we call this great play, but Sam called it a "3" on a scale of 1-10 LOL
This is what we have all wanted to see. Well done Sam for putting yourself out there and showing some real class. Love Sam's swing and attitude
Honestly, watching Sam (and always Rick) struggling playing golf is what humanizes it, and reminds me that bad shots don't make the player bad. Two classy guys for sure.
I grew up and played with him in a junior golf tournament in Florida and man he was prodigy back then shooting 5 under at USF the Claw course. Just straight up beat everyone. It was a sight to see.
I live in Tampa area and play the Claw. That course is tough!! To shoot a -5 in a junior tournament is absolutely insane!!!!!! 💪🏼
how good is he, just amazing, and so so easy to listen to as well. A very humble man and it is also a credit to you to have quality golfers giving their time to be on your channel
Seeing a tour pro playing in person makes you appreciate how good they really are
100%. I have played with couple guys that have played in PGA events. At couple local golf clubs. One played in a British Open. Dude got out of car, swung a speed stick few times, then shot 65 with 2 bogeys. Whole other level.

Oh my got I’ve found my favorite person watching my other favorite person it’s a miracle
Most D1 college players would've been disappointed with 67 on that softball tract.
For sure. It gives a whole new perspective to the expression "next level"
Thanks for showing the tracer shots. I’m seeing this more in golf coverage now. It makes it so much more enjoyable to see the shot forming in the air rather than just waiting for the landing.
It’s an absolute must at this point with the technology
give my channel a look then maybe, i just hired a guy to film and edit with shot tracers! 👍
Tracer shots are dumb graphics for kids. Puts me off watching modern golf. Well that and the absurd driver head size. Between the huge driver heads and the tracer line it looks like a looney tunes cartoon.

Really enjoyed this video as I have often wondered how a pro would perform on my local course. Rick you hosted this perfectly. Complements to Sam as he demonstrated that professionalism in golf isn't just being able to hit it long, but in maintaining a courteous, calm, and positive demeanor. I think he also had the foresight to play casually, and not hyper focused to mirror how most amateur's play.
What impressed me most is that he didn't lose a single ball or take a single penalty on a course he'd never played before. That alone separates the men from the boys
I caddied on the American PGA tour in the early 90s. One of the players I was working for went and played a round with me a regular public course one day. He shot 61! He was just a guy who struggled to keep his tour card, not a guy who was winning on tour.
... the standard required to maintain a card is unbelievable eh.
The average tour pro is 3 strokes better than a scratch golfer. Or it was last I read
@James Flynn I would think it's more like 6-8 strokes better. I was a 2 handicap for years and I wasn't even close to the worst tour players.
@@57Jimflynn ... nope. My friend who has a card gives me a shot a hole...I play off four. He often drives the par fours that I hit a wedge into. Birdies for halves anyone?
... btw, that's me having to make the birdies for a half. Not him. He makes eagles.
He often breaks 60 on a course I shoot around par on.
Seems like a very genuine guy, looks like he'd be lots of fun to be around. Also the things I'd do to shoot 4 under in my course is immeasurable lol. He made it look easy even when he says his game was garbage.

It takes a tremendous attitude to be this bloke. All the pressure yet he stays humble and gracious. Sam I salute you!
A few years ago we had a couple of former University of Georgia team golfers come and play our semi-private course in middle Georgia. They had never played it before and both did pretty well. It is a par 71 course from the white tee playing 6750 yards. One of them shot 67 and the other shot 65. Mind you, it was a warm, late summer afternoon so the ball flew a bit better through the air. Having a nice cold beverage after the round, one of them commented that he thought the course wasn't that tough but course management was the key since there are so many risk/reward opportunities that a few bad decisions would cost several strokes. I mentioned that course management is the only way I play. It was a fun day for all.
Loved watching how a tour pro dissects a course that we play. If he played the same course again in good weather he’d probably shoot 62 now he has a feel for it. Seems like a really chill dude too.

@@GearycoI think that a pro golfer might find that distracting, especially in a tight match with money on the line. Same reason why it’s only on a special occasion that it happens in other sports. Sam does not seem to play a bad shot it's just the green speed that got him.super impressive.

These type of videos of tour pro (or ex) professionals playing with cheap clubs or local golf courses are my favourite. Brings home just how phenomenally good these guys are. Keep them coming Rick!
Yeah I know nothing about golf, and all golf shots and swings look identical to me normally. But these videos really make it obvious - even to an idiot like me - just how good they are. Just how much better pro golfers are than regular golfers.
Also I love the thing he does with these videos and he uses his editing software to show you the path of the ball in a big red line. Whenever I've watched golf on TV, they never seemed to have that, and instead always just seem to track the ball in the air even though with a shot like that, there's no reference points in the frame to tell you where the ball is or where it's going and how fast it's going, the shape of the arc, etc. So I dunno if modern day golf presentation on TV already does this thing Rick does. But if they don't, they desperately need to, because it demonstrates far more clearly what's going on
I'm glad I found this channel. I never knew golf was so fascinating. I might actually try and play it again (well, I have never played on an actual golf course, I've only ever been to a driving range, and I was never any good at it, but I'll try again now)
This was soooo fun!! Just stumbled across your channel. PLEASE do more of these! Love it!
Amazing to see how our typical golf courses, and their level of preparation drastically effects the level of golf, especially the green speeds. Playing stimp of 13 or 14 is your usual and then playing our muni styles of 9 has got to be frustrating
This is a terrific idea and I love the way you display the flight path as a second view. I would really love to see more of this “pros on the average course” stuff and you do that interaction extremely well my friend. Great video!!

I used to play in Punta Ala, which is one of the toughest courses in Italy. Matteo Manassero used to come there in the summer to train when he was in his prime. The average score in Punta Ala for a scratch golfer is over 74, Manassero scored 65 on a regular basis.
It’s crazy at watch this man be disappointed in a round that 99% of the commenters wouldn’t even dream of ever having. Awesome video, hope you can get more tour players to do these

No doubt the wet greens and slow speed of the greens and cold weather made focused putting hard. Sam did a good job of keeping it together. On a good note his swing is wonderful to watch.

Don't expect to see me on tour, ever, but thank you for all the info! Great content for somebody starting with next to zero skill
My biggest tip is to try and find a level of comfort in your swing. Dont try to hard, its just a game. If you have space to practice callaway makes great foam practice balls. They will fly quite a good distance. The thing i like most is the ball flight is pretty accurate. I use them for pitch shots in my yard and its more about contact and my swing. Working on my take away and follow through. Best of luck to you. Golf is so much fun, and theres tons of beautiful courses
if you go to have fun and enjoy your time, there's nothing better. equipment is needed, but doesn't need to be expensive. I bought a second hand driver fer 40$ plus tax. I hit as far as my buddy's 250$ driver. i can hit farther with his, but its about finding your own game/style

Yes… any tour level players are just so good!! To me what makes them so good, isn’t the great drives or shots into the green. But how they navigate trouble. I mean … he’s literally stymied under a freaking bush.. and makes a Ho-hum par! Ridiculous!!
That was one of your best. Love watching a tour pro play what to us mortals is normal course golf. And coming away at -4. So cool. Thanks to all involved.
This was my favorite video in your lineup, Rick. Great content!
Years ago, my brother-in-law played a round at a public course in Austin, TX with a PGA Tour pro, Omar Uresti. My BIL (who is a scratch golfer) outdrove Omar on pretty much every hole, and they were tied after 8 holes at even par. Then Omar birdied the next seven holes, ended up shooting 65 (which was the course record at the time)... my BIL shot even par and got SMOKED 😂
Omar probably needed to get used to the greens. I think that is the biggest thing for pros playing new golf courses.
your BIL is a legend, though.
@@toddinthemiddle He IS a legend... and a + handicap. Seeing the gulf between him and a journeyman tour pro was eye-opening. Most people can't comprehend just how good these guys really are, and they play courses that are more difficult by several orders of magnitude.

@@lessmith5285 No, it was Roy Kizer, the week it opened. My BIL corrected me and said Omar shot 64, not 65.
A quick story that this reminds me of. In the early 1980's Seve Ballesteros played an exhibition game in a course close to me in Ireland. It was the day after he won the Irish Open. The course is about 6900 yards from the tips, so with equipment changes probably played then like a 7200, 7300 yard course plays these days. It's hosted all of the biggest Irish amateur tournaments, so it's not a cakewalk. I'm sure it was set up fairly tough, it must have been the biggest day in the club's history. Anyway, without his regular caddie and focusing more on chatting with the spectators, he casually knocked it around in 68, four under. Bit of an eye opener.

Literally the equivalent of “Can he do it on a rainy night in Stoke, though?” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Rick can do a whole series of this and it would be phenomenal. Very difficult to do but still. Crazy how effortless that round was for him. Their games are just on another level
A course I used to caddie at had a good number of pro players hanging around and I caddied for a handful of them- they are definitely playing a different game than us
@@quiksix25 A lot of people will tell you the difference is their short game, but as you saw, when the greens are not perfect, it is still not easy. For me on an average course the main difference is just the accurate distance off the tee. A low amateur would score about the same if they dropped their ball in the same spot.
The difference comes more on the harder tracks where the penalty for missing the fairway or green is greater and there are more unlevel lies, and the greens get faster. At that point they really are playing a completely different game, and it is one most amateurs never even get to play. Even if you do play one of the championship courses, it isn't set up in championship shape and it the tees are rarely at the back.
@@TheToledoTrumpton I agree to a point, one thing I noticed was that they take max 3 strokes when they're anywhere near the green, and usually 2 (saw more than a few chip ins as well)- as you can guess though these aren't your average courses, they host a PGA event every year RSM Classic

People think all pros are going to shoot sub 60, but they are conditioned to think that all pros shoot like the top pros for the week. When watching a tournament, they generally only show the top guys, so people assume everybody is knocking it to 10 feet from 180 every time.

5 months later, I'm 10 and able to play 15 holes. At the age of 9 I was only able to play 12 holes-
haven't played since August 2021 tryna get my Papa to get us both out playing 15 holes-
@@broketables way to go buddy! On the last three holes, ride along with your papa and take a free drop near the green to practice a tricky pitch and then putt. Exercise to get stronger and more endurance to be able to play those last three in your downtime. Push ups, squats and other body weight exercise in higher volumes will get you over that hump in just a few weeks.
Honestly, in those conditions with slower than normal greens, that was a well played round. Enjoyed watching!

I love your content. You are a great dude that really engages the audience... Much appreciated.
Good sport for playing in the conditions!! Thanks for the video.
Love this type of video! Would love to see you seek out the easiest courses and see how low you can go!
Had a smile on my face the whole video thanks guys, looking forward to seeing more of this
I think Rick thought he was "pumping" him up and being his cheerleader but honestly, I feel he just put tons of pressure on him to be perfect. I counted "Come on Sam" 27 times! Talk about pressure Rick geeze. No wonder he shot poorly.
Absolutely incredible that he’d give him self a 3 of 10 on 4 under par. if I break 90 im a happy guy lol really puts the tour guys and gals into perspective. Great video!
Most entertaining 30 minutes I’ve had in a long time! Proper good content this like. 🙌🏻
That course is still amazing, come to Texas and play on dead grass and dirt lol
Out in Tyler TX right now and even the country club out here has dead spots. It’s murder. Though the dry conditions make for nice long drives that just roll out a good ways.
This is the first video of yours I’ve ever seen, and was a great watch. I’m just getting back into golf, and was amazing to see even pros hit it into the trees like the rest of us 😂 What a great sport Sam was. Really enjoyable video. Subscribed!
Wow. That was so much fun to watch. Things I picked up:
1) His attitude was so positive, relaxed YET focused.
2) His swing was ridiculously repeated over and over and over and over. And over. He hits a baby draw. Over and over. And over. Wow. And hit one cut shot - on demand. Again, wow.
3) His attitude is so freaking positive but I said that before.
4) His 4 foot putts are MONEY. Those were probably WAY more important than his superb ball striking!❤
