Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This CZcams channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.

Put most your effort there and the rest will fall into place

On the greens at my local course it's possible to putt the ball off the green and down a hill which requires a very difficult short range lob on to a (very raised) green followed by several tense, very gentle putts (to ensure it stays on the green). It's literally the case sometimes that if your ball doesn't go in the hole it will go 10 feet past and or into oblivion. But hey there's no bunkers!

Another tip that helped me when I was learning. 5 strokes per hole is 90. If you bogey a par 4, not a problem. Double bogey a par 4 and then bogey a par three still averages 5 per hole. Takes the pressure off if you have a bad hole. Makes you think when you put one in the woods and have to chip out instead of being stupid and trying to be a hero. Only I more stroke for the mistake and you have a chance of making it up on an easier hole. Play smart and it’s only 1 less stroke and you are in the 80’s.

When I first started playing golf, I’d always try to make a great shot out of trouble and I’d hit a great one 1 out of 10 times. One day, I got paired with an older gentlemen. I hit my shot into the trees and he noticed I’d tried to get on the green and ended up hitting a bad shot and tripled the whole. Then he uttered the words that I have lived by even after 20+ years. “When in trouble, don’t make it double”. That same round, I found myself in the trees again (Harding Park has a lot of them). Walking up to my ball, I kept muttering “when in trouble, don’t make it double”. I got up, chipped it laterally back into the fairway with a 7 iron, hit a really good third and made a decent putt for par.

Instead of trying to advance it as far as I could, which would have been a tough shot, I chipped it out back into the fairway and left myself 225 to the pin, into the wind. Water on the left, I hit a high draw with my 2 iron and landed it on the green, albeit still having a long putt but it was for birdie. I ended up 3 putting it for a bogey which I was happy about consider where I was.

I taught myself these tips years ago and lowered my index from 28 to 20 (all from tournament scores, i.e., play by the rules and putt out). 1) My par is 90, bogey golf. I don't worry about making par. If I make a good chip or make a long putt, great, I make par, maybe even a birdie. 2) I usually use a 3 hybrid to get out of jail. Using Rick's technique, I can skim the ball just off the turf 100 to 150 yards and I'm back in the hole. 3) I use the bump and run (the "Scottish chip" as I call it) from 100 yards in whenever there's no hazard in front of me, like a lake or bunker. Takes a lot of practice to gauge how hard to hit it, but I'm usually somewhere on the green putting for par. 4) I practice 30' & 40' putts a lot, just for speed, and I practice 6' in, that's it. All I can say is this has served me well and made the game more fun.
