My dad gifted me a Speedmaster ten years ago. I've never once used the chrono function for anything. I've tested it to see that it runs, and that's it.

I've had my Speedmaster Professional for decades and use the chrono all the time. Even more, I rely on the 12-hour timer register for parking meters.
How to prepare pork chops: Fry in a pan with butter on high temperature for 2 minutes each side. Then take it off the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. Add salt and pepper.
I like pork chops, so I have a few chronographs. If I'm not wearing a chronograph that day, I'll take one out of the box and wear it while I'm cooking.
“You don’t need 100m” amen….amen. The WR resistance obsession in the hobby is wild. Even with Speedmaster having a METAS verified 50m “suitable for swimming,” 70% of the watch community is afraid to wash their hands wearing one. Crazy.
You are not a gold coin to make happy to everyone, as long you are happy with the timepiece you get is fine, stop caring about what others say.

If a watch moves something inside you, get it if you can afford it. And I’ve never bought anything with the intent to sell it. If anything, I’ll give it away to a family member, bandmate, or a good friend.

Totally agree. Every watch I bought and decided wasn't really for me, I have given to my son. Only problem is, I have now passed on the watch collecting gene.

Look, I’m fairly snobby about things (for myself, I never put down others for their choices and there are great watches at almost any price range) and I do time things a lot, so I do have divers and chronograph dominating my collection.
But you said early on the only thing that actually matters in this hobby-if you look down at your wrist and what’s on it makes you happy, you’ve cracked it. That’s the only thing that matters. Not the movement, the brand, the history, the heritage. If it makes you happy, you’re good. From the lowliest Casio to the finest Patek, if you’re happy when you wear it, you’ve won the game.

But I also wear my divers more when I’m cooking and doing things like that, since all my chronos are on leather and bracelets are easier to just rinse off if anything gets on them. But yeah, more often than not, I like looking at my divers and imagining, even if just for a fleeting moment, that I am going to leave it all behind, abscond to a tropical island, and live out my days diving wrecks and only drinking things that come with a tiny umbrella. Also, I love your content. I like how relaxed and unpretentious the vibe is. Keep up the great work!

I recently came to the conclusion that the idea of a luxury dive watch just doesn't make sense (for me). I don't see the point of a dive watch that I'd be afraid to wear in the pool. I have an Omega Aqua Terra as my daily wear which is perfectly capable of dealing with just about any situation, but if I know I'm going to be underwater or doing something that might otherwise put my very expensive nice watch at risk, I'll switch to a Certina diver or a G-Shock. Peace of mind is part of the cost of ownership.
Add GMT to the list of complications that the industry made people believe they need. The point of this particular complication for everyday people has always escaped me. I mean, if you find adding or subtracting a simple number on the fly in your mind too complicated should you even be outside without a caretaker?
Agree for most people. I love a GMT as someone who travels a lot. Really it’s just the ability to change the hour without having to reset the watch entirely…which is why I end up wearing an apple watch most of the time I’m gone
@@BlakeAStoffel "I love a GMT as someone who travels a lot" -- I used to work as a road warrior. Lots of travel. I still found it easier to add/subtract in my mind than mess with the watch. Besides, the real GMT would account for date difference, but GMT watches do not, at least not the ones i have seen.
For travel, I absolutely love Citizen Attesa - switching time zones while accounting for date is a breeze, and never worrying about running out of battery or setting time is a nice plus.
I use my gmt and travel a lot but I live far away from my family so yea maybe most people don’t use it.
@@crimclay1077 Did you read my answer to Blake? I used to travel all the time. GMT function is an affectation. You can add or subtract a simple digit in your mind faster than screw around with the silly complication.
I love a chronograph when I’m making tea. I can look down and say dammit I forgot again! 😉
If you are a diver, probably youll use a dive computer in your wrist.
If you want to get the timing for a race lap, probably you'll be using a hand chronometer , and very probably a digital one.
For real life , hardly we'll be using the complications on a luxury watch , but they look nice anyway . Just its more a thing of personal tastes :)

The only reason you'd use the watches for their intended use is to do it for the sake of doing it.
Timing your dive with a Submariner is a pretty cool thing to do.
Timing a car over a mile with a Daytona and checking it's speed on the tachymeter is likewise pretty cool.
But both ultimately these days pointless and not very efficient or accurate.
It’s still fun to wear a watch in addition to a computer while diving though.
I only have dress watches, the toughest built is a solar titanium Seiko, 100 meters WR. I only 'need' dress watches because well I like to dress up.
"No need for 100m water resistance" - I'll agree when 5 atm stops meaning "be careful washing your hands".
I definitely have never needed a chronograph. At work we use military time so a GMT is helpful. My main watch, the one that sees 99% wrist time is my Explorer 124270. It’s just fine for everything I do. I can jump in a pool, go snorkeling, hiking, or just be a potato at work.

my dive watch has forded rives, swum in alpine lakes, has a scratch on the sapphire crystal from rock climbing. I love my tool watch for all the actual adventures I do. The timing bezel is useful for tracking how long I've been on trail.
Besides that, I could probably wear my Cartier Tank the rest of the time
I bought a PRX digital because it is so RETRO and reminds me very much of the digital watches I couldn’t afford as a kid. It has been universally reviled and eschewed by the influencers and so called experts. They all need to remember, watches are about personal taste not conformity. ❤️

Tag is such an easy brand to wear around comfortably. I was wearing my two--tone Carrera earlier. I bought it so that I could send my sentimental old quartz-ish Aquaracer Calibre S to LVMH refurbishment.
I also keep saying I'm going to buy a quartz Grand Seiko, or a Bulova Lunar Pilot (meteorite dial, though), but it's easy to get distracted. And my dream Cartier is a Solarbeat Santos Dumont.
I use the bezel of divers when I’m waiting for the bread on my bakery… “come back in 15 minutes”…
I use the bezel on my Breitling to time the grilling of my burgers and chicken. If the watch manufacturers were honest in their advertising, this would be how they portray most folks using their watches. 😅
I use my timing bezel on my diver (divers are easy to read for my poor eyesight) all the time even for a few minutes because I have a memory like a... erm... those things with holes in them... er... teabag? Memory like a teabag, no that's not it... hmmm... anyway, my memory is not good.
As a paramedic of all the features on any of my watches the dive bezel is the one I use every day.

I like both the automatic mechanical and quartz watches, but when buying a Tissot I can save $200-$300 US dollars by getting a quartz. I keep asking myself, what would I use a tachymeter for and I can’t think of one, so my collection doesn’t have one yet. Very good talk for watch collectors.
I was under your influence buying SeaQ…had an eye on BB54…then thought about Belcanto…. but bought SeaQ….maybe greatest decision EVER,SeaQ feels like toolwatch lovers RM,it’s that good…never thought any girl in my world would compliment any of my watches,first time happened with Glashütte…this is ridiculous how nobody even mentions this watch…

My notion is that watches are "jewelry with a function". By all means, buy something that you think looks nice on you, fits your lifestyle/image and that you think _might_ impress others (jewelry), but take into consideration whether it adds something to your daily life, does nothing for it either way, or even detracts from it (function). My 9-5 job has me doing manual labour and reaching into tight spaces, so, most workdays, my ideal watch is a slim and/or rugged quartz. My cheap-and-cheerful little ~$50 Casio Slim Solar is really growing on me as a nine-to-fiver, since it fits my most practical needs to a T, and the sporty fonts and orange-on-black colour scheme feel like such a good fit for me, given how much driving I do on-the-job. And as much as I'm getting to like it, I won't be heartbroken when (not if) I seriously damage it, because I can just pick up another one without a second thought.
As for the notion of feeling like selling a watch is "flipping" it, again, yeah, you're spot-on: don't self-shame; consider how somebody else might get absolute joy from the watch that's been sitting on your dresser for the last year or so. And heck yeah, cultivate a good relationship with your AD / local trusted watchmaker/jeweler. Almost unsurprisingly, given that they work hands-on with watches every day, they'll steer you right when you do well by them.
About water resistance: Oh yeah, it's such a pointless obsession over numbers. As you said, most people are never going to dive with their "dive" watch. Not to mention, I've seen a bunch of videos lately showing that you can take a $25 Casio F91W and dive to 30m with it with confidence, or, you can fill the case with mineral oil to be sure. And at $25, you can just replace the watch after every dive to be _absolutely_ sure. Oh, and let me be absolutely clear: 30m is very deep. It's 100 feet. You're probably never going to dive that deep, *_even if you spend the time and money getting a SCUBA certification_* , because the basic SCUBA cert only goes that far.
Finally, as an electronics guy... hahaha... I do have to say again how I don't mind my quartzes in the least. While there's so much to respect and love and fascinate over with a proper mechanical watch, some quartzes do tickle me just right. Like, my aforementioned Slim Solar is basically a digital watch that chooses how and when to activate its display and move its hands based on a pretty limited power reserve. Yeah.
Totally! Especially about quartz: I can’t believe how many watch influencers are woefully ignorant of the history of quartz timekeeping or even how it works.

To your point about quartz watches, my wife loves luxury items. She sees my watches and hey, she wants one too. But...she would absolutely not be interested in a manual wind timepiece or even a mechanical watch. She wants something beautiful and luxurious but without the fuss. Her Cartier Ballon Bleu quartz checks all those boxes. Great video Gringa!
Chronograph is useful to measure distance from thunderstorms. Measure the time it takes to hear thunder after you see the lighting. Multiple by 1087 feet. There you have it.

I owned a chronograph for about 10 years before I learned what the functions of a chronograph actually do on a watch CZcams channel. I didn’t even know you weren’t supposed to keep the main second hand running as I didn’t know that hand was meant to time stuff. I just kept getting upset that the battery would die way too early 🤷

Your best videos far. Great to hear straight-up sense. And, yeah… there’s a reason everyone gave up on mechanical watches once quartz came down in price…and a reason the Swiss had to re-market mechanical watches as old-world luxury objects to compete with the technology that made them irrelevant.

Dove with my Omega Seamaster once. The actual DIVE COMPUTER on my other wrist was what I used to time my dive and make sure I completed my safety stops. But now I can say I did it. :-)
lol I mostly use my chronograph to time my cooking and coffee brewing and the dive watch is just so much easier to see at a glance while swimming even if you don't dive

I've taken a break from viewing all the usual youtube watch content and I was surprised how quickly my natural preferences came back when not being constantly influenced. I've recently been looking at picking up a cheap 36-38mm quartz dive watch just for fun. I typically use the bezel throughout my day to quickly/easily time everything from cooking and coffee, and on several occasions for more serious things like the length of my daughter's seizures.
It's also fun to take off my dive watch and throw it into the deep end of my pool when my neices and nephews come over and let them dive for it 😄
Re water resistance: as someone with a young kid, it’s become weirdly important to wear something I can keep on while giving my kid a daily bath. My dressier 30m watches (and anything with a delicate leather band) are gathering dust.

It’s very much entertainment for me on a topic I just love. I would really recommend The Lonely Wrist podcast as well for a wide ranging look at the world of Horology, without it being life and death!!

As far as quartz goes, you can get a quartz movement that sweeps like a mechanical if you don't like the tick every second. Have a Bulova with a Precisionist movement that sweeps smoother than some of my mechanicals. Kind of two birds with one stone watch.
My Grand Seiko Katana with Spring Drive has the smooth sweep technology, but without the need for a battery.
I just don't like the idea of quartz. Absolutely EVERYTHING runs off electricity in the 21st Century. I like the idea of still have ONE piece of equipment that I carry on my person that isn't digital or electronic or powered by electricity or battery - but is totally mechanical - and engineering marvel. I love that - I hate quartz. Not just the tick of the seconds hand - although that does give me the ICK - but also just the knowledge that its just another digital-electric doo-dad that is a dime-a-dozen these days.
A precise second hand which always hit markers is always indication of quality. If you want high end quartz I suggest Citizen 001. Luxury but also utilitarian.
I struggle selling too. I have never sold a piece yet, but may be rethinking that too
I need a Dive Watch because I love the bezel and I use it as a small timer because I think it's cooler than using the phone or smart watch for me. So now I got my first real watch Seiko 5 in the Pepsi look and I love it.
100% the play for keeps is me. I have such a hard time letting anything go bc it feels like I failed and wasted time. Im learning to do this slowly but its still really difficult to do

I bought a Seamaster at the start of the year which has become my daily wear just because i like how it looks. I live in Wales right by the sea and have yet to even go paddling, let alone swimming or diving with it 😅

I’m been wearing a 36mm (~36) explorer as my daily wear with a 7.5” wrist and it’s working out for my life style. I commute to work via motorbike, a Triumph T120 and I think I’m pretty dang cool, man.
So I get the whole dive watch and chronograph thing but it’s robustness and readily available timers. My Apple Watch can do everything but the downside is if I want a stopwatch then it’s at least 3 steps away and that’s if I’m on the right face for the chrono. Having instant access to a stopwatch makes timing things much easier, plus it’s a beautiful complication to watch(haha) working, all the leavers and additional gear trains 😊
although my g-shock will do everything i need it to do, i NEED my GSAR for adventuring. camping, canoeing, backpacking... it is tough enough and i know i can knock it around without thinking about it.

I've been scuba diving. Everybody with me had a dive watch on. Which means that even then, I STILL didn't need a dive watch.
OTOH, I don't drive at 160 mph, but I'd sure as hell buy an Aston Martin if I had the dough. As you say - buy what makes you happy!
I couldn't care less about watch trends or buying watches as an investment. I buy watches because I simply enjoy them, and really anything that has to do with time - clocks included. Thanks for posting Britt! You really add something fun to the world of watches.
Well, as a teenager I had several watches ruined by water and sweat since I was not able to afford any better - now I have collection of vintage Tag Heuer dive pieces..

About the swimming topic. Actually, it happens to me I live 2 blocks from the beach :)
Alternate point of view on divers. While I love all watches, divers make an ideal daily for me, especially with a date function. Do you NEED one in your collection, maybe, but for me, the answer is yes. I cook for a living and use the bezel to time things all the time. A dive bezel is great for setting "ball park" timers, like when I put a roast or braise in the oven. (If I need to be more accurately timing things, I have plenty of gshocks to wear😁). Plus, whatever watch I wear for the day is going to be wet, a lot. Obviously not 200 meters wet, but could be wet all day. So, screw down crown and screw down case back are really nice security features. If I had to have a one watch collection, it would be a diver. Super easy to read, usually awesome like, etc...

Same here…. I’m a professional pilot, my daily work wear is a Submariner. I use the bezel to remind me of timing limits, brief times etc… and the much maligned date window… just the job for reminding me what day it is when signing the tech log!
I’m no fan of ‘pilot’ watches, my robust diver is good for me.

I saw a film noir in which the mean boss used his chronograph to limit staff presentations to two minutes each. I was so surprised to see a chronograph actually in use that I stopped the film, took photos, and texted my watch friends! 🎉🥳 (The Big Clock 1948)
The date will not always be right on any watch in a certain price point, even your quartz tag.
I have seiko king turtle, which I love, however still take it off when I do the washing up let alone go swimming with it.
My buddy has a speedmaster moon watch, and he said every collection is supposed to have one” and he said it with irony, but I heard what he was saying and at the same time, I realized I would never ever want to wear one and I don’t care if I’m a “real” watch guy.
I also have several quartz watches and I love the ease of use because only two of my autos are running at a time. My latest quartz is a women’s Orient Tank, and I’m obsessed (my wife HATES it).

It is true that I started insisting on a watch with a stopwatch, having found and worn several I found I never used the stopwatch. So now I I actually prefer watches with no stopwatch.
Solar, handwind mechanical, quartz, and automatic pieces are in my collection. TBH I use my solar and quartz most of the time with my automatic as an option if the others fall out of charge.
Great video with a message a LOT of people need to hear and take to heart -- whether it's about watches, or houses, or cars, or pens etc etc. My wife helps me put it in perspective when I wax poetic about ..well, any THING but as applied to watches; she gives me an eye roll and asks why ANYONE needs a watch today! Still, I like 'em but am perfectly fine with solar quartz (set and forget) or the extravagance of my Hamilton Khaki Field auto. Right now, I'm wearing an Islander pilot style watch cause I like it and found it quite affordable -- plus it has 100M water resistance 😀
I just think a diver is the perfect parent watch, you will notice. Timing naps, timing time between naps, timing warming food, timing EVERYTHING :)
Nobody uses a diver for diving, we use it for everyday life.

This is an interesting topic. Like many, CZcams informed my early watch knowledge but it quickly stagnated with most peddling similar "group think" content. There also seems to be under the table deals informing a lot of content and supposedly impartial reviews, with one notable CZcamsr that you mentioned in particular (definitely not Archie, love that man!).

I was thinking about "not needing" as I set my Bulova Wilton GMT to put it on this morning. I'm not traveling out of my time zone, and I haven't done so in over twenty years. But I always thought it would be cool to own a traveler GMT. I don't even need it for my call with Austria. I just like having an excuse to wear a GMT. I know it sounds corny, but if I've spent hundreds of dollars on a watch, I want to enjoy wearing it. Isn't that the point of non-essential goods?

Im buying an IWC mark xx on bracelet and going to get a rubber an alligator straps basically getting different looks and feels from the one watch. Dont underestimate the strap change to make you feel you have a different watch on
Strap swapping is half the fun and is why 20mm is the correct lug width
I can understand that someone buys a diving watch for the looks of it, but for diving not. A diving computer will calculate your remaining bottom time according to your actual depth profile, the depth profiles of the previous dives, resting time, and air mixture. A diving computer will therefore help you to maximize the numbers of dives you can make safely during a diving holiday and since they don't come cheap you will get more fun for your money.

Britt, I have a tag kirium quartz I bought a long time ago and still love it!! I am a collector and I say wear what you like, period. People that say wearing quartz is not ok should really get a hold of themselves. Good videos keep it up.
my mechanical dive watches are my tool watches..so no issue there... Chronos...I love the busy look...those are the ones I have as quatz...cause it's just so much cheaper and more accurate.
Either way, I have too many watches cause the biggest watch box no longer can hold them all.

When I look down and don't have a bezel to twist I get anxious; I gotta have a nice clicky bezel to fidget with. I wish they were all BI-directional for timing purposes and you know... inclusion.
I absolutely NEED a timing function. Doesn't have to be overly accurate though, rotating bezel is fine.
I wear a G-shock almost every day. 99,9% of the time it's my GW-9400 on my wrist.
I've got 3 dive watches, and a kiddie pool in the backyard is as close to diving any of them have been! I don't buy them to dive, I just like the style. Looking at buying number 4 and building 2 others, lol!
Oh, and I have 2 chronographs, only thing I really use them for is timing pancakes on the griddle. Although sometimes I start a timer when I get to a store to see how long I spend shopping, and forget about it until I take it off at bedtime and see the chronograph still running. Oops.
I have always been a bit left field with my preferences, I recall many years ago, my bachelors graduation present, my folks said are you sure you don’t want a Rolex, instead I choose a chronometer Tiffany Atlas made in sterling silver, paper maché “rice water coloured” dial with roman numerals embossed on the bezel.

My hot take...the best swim watch...is the Casio F-91W. Ultra-Cheap, Ultra-Light, Ultra-Durable...and it's rated for 30 meters. It'll be fine. This protects your nice watch and gives you a backup when your nice watch is getting serviced. If the battery dies or the band breaks or it takes a hard bash, you chuck it and order another under $20 F-91W. The one I bought in 2017 from Amazon set me back $7.75, and it still works!

There is one thing I would disagree with you on, and that is the 100m WR take. I've had to get two different Swiss watches (both with 50m WR) repaired simply after 1. water damage from doing the dishes and 2. swimming in a shallow pool, so forgive me for me being skeptical about 100m being unnecessary. If I'm paying hundreds, or even thousands, for a watch then I want it to last and be durable.
This is a great video, and agree with it all, except, well… ermm… am I the only one that thinks that loosing a few grand to “maintain that relationship” with a Rolex AD is, well, ermm ever so slightly a bit insane?
Few grand is a holiday, house bills, extra few fancier experiences or whatever… but hey, I’m sure someone at that Rolex AD will happily pocket those Gs instead.

Britt you are right about what do we actually need and what do we purchase. On my wrist right now is a diver that says 300 meters and I do not even wear it in the shower 🤣and by the way...quartz watches are perfectly ok
