  • Japanese Thermos Bottles (I'm Slightly Obsessed). For a long time I've been living under the assumption that Japanese thermoses (tumblers, travel mugs, insulated drink bottles, vacuum flasks... whatever you call them) are the best. To test out my convictions, I added to my already large collection of thermoses to test out a whole bunch of them.
    Because I know people will ask, here's a list of all the thermoses that I own that I could find. It's not exhaustive. Note 1: Some of the links are Amazon referral links, but don't feel any pressure to buy using those links. Note 2: Yen prices already include Japan's 10% consumption tax. I don't know how taxes work on Amazon US, but the $ prices are what I saw listed on the site. Note 3: If it's a Japanese bottle being sold in the US or vice versa, the prices are usually much more expensive.

    I read a lot of comments about how Japanese products are so much better/cooler/cuter than those from other countries. And I agree, the selection and quality of products here is pretty amazing. I think it all comes down to the fact that most companies around the world are overly focused on the bottom line - a product is selling well, so there’s no need to waste money updating or improving it. Better to keep the product cheaper for the consumer, right? But NOT Japanese companies. Here, companies are focused on making the best product possible. They just trust that consumers are willing to pay a little more for something new and slightly better. Then there is the business culture of “KAIZEN”... the constant striving to improve products and practices. Because…well, that’s the culture.

    Hey there, I haven’t read the other comments yet but just in case no one else mentioned it ..... An amazing way to clean those tough or hard to reach stains on coffee/tea mugs, glass vases and coffee pots etc etc is (drum roll please) denture cleaning tablets. Fill your stained container with warm water (not hotter than 50 degrees Celsius) and drop in one or two denture tablets. Let the tablet fizz away and do its thing for as little as 5 minutes - but I usually leave it for around 10-15 minutes (or longer). Afterwards, rinse, wipe and wash well. Any stains should either be gone or simply wipe away easily while rinsing. Some denture tablets are not suitable for certain types of metals, but they also have tablets that are made for dentures that have metal parts. Anyway, most tablets now are suitable with metals but I just thought I would point that out because I don’t know what’s available “where you’re from”. It will say if it’s suitable with metal on the packaging. I’m only mentioning all this stuff about metal because I saw that you had a metal mug/cup.
    Aaaaanyway, I’ve used this trick for years and it’s always very satisfying when you are left with a sparkling clean mug and all those stubborn tea stains have totally disappeared. One brand of denture tablets is made by Sterident and a couple of other brands. They are usually sold in boxes of 20-30 tablets and can be found near the toothbrushes and toothpaste etc in the supermarket. Anyway, try it out - it’s really great for cleaning glass coffee pots 🐿😀👋. Thanks for the great channel.

    Greg! You made my Google Home start a 3-minute timer!
    Also is there a reason why American brands make them heavier?
    Do you think the American demographics correlates quality/durability with weight while for the Japanese market lightweight means more portable and easy to handle?

    • @Jordan-inJapan
      @Jordan-inJapan Před 3 lety +25

      I think it comes down to this: it’s slightly more expensive to make a lighter, but still-well-insulated thermos. American companies (or those in most other countries) just see the bottom line and think it’s better to make a little more profit or else make the product a little cheaper for consumers. Japanese companies, on the other hand, are focused on making the BEST product possible. They just trust that consumers are willing to pay a little more for something new and slightly better.

    • @sirBrouwer
      @sirBrouwer Před 3 lety +9

      it's more the settings they are more used in.
      in the US you will see the biggest use of thermos are in rugged outdoor environments.
      There the heavier version comes over as more capable to survive being ruffed for a long time over and over.
      the Japanese version more look like they are good for urban area's and light work/sports. but will not survive a construction site for long.

    • @sirBrouwer
      @sirBrouwer Před 3 lety +4

      @@Jordan-inJapan it's often the same company that makes both. so the cheapest option would be to go for one version but as i said here below.

      I don't actually know the answer to the question, but I do know that dishwashers are much more prevalent in America than in Japan. Running your thermos through the dishwasher repeated can affect the wear. I also know that my father had a big heavy duty thermos for his work at construction sites. I believe the thinner Japanese versions would probably have ended up very dented and scratched with that sort of use.

      Not hot dogs. :-) Also access to cheese is highly curtailed here. And sometimes if it is a really cold winter the cows don't produce enough milk, which is fine because 2/3 of the population is lactose intolerant. But there is a shortage of butter. If you live in the countryside like me there are years where you can go 2-3 months without seeing butter on the store shelves. Ha ha! I'm only complaining about food...
