      The problem with it is if you just wanted a plain water bottle, it has a huge emblem on it. I'm not looking for one as the one I've got is good enough but I wound buy Hydroflask simply because it's a cleaner look without the huge name emblazoned on it.

    Since the bottles look so similar, I wonder if the difference is in the lid design; a lot of insulated water bottles don't have insulated lids. Could you test them with the lids switched to test for that? That would be awesome.

    • @lissaw4
      @lissaw4 Před 4 lety +62

      That's actually a really good point! I lost the lid for one of my aluminum water bottles and had to buy a new lid from a different company. Bought a second bottle of the same thing just to have an extra on hand. The replacement lid I bought for the old bottle makes a significant difference in temperature. when I was buying the replacement lid I specifically bought an insulated lid because I assumed that's what the original lid was.

    That actually was scientific, By doing the hot and cold tests and both being roughly 15 degrees different, nearly all of the variables have been removed. There's roughly a 20% difference in insulating ability. It's also the same size and slightly cheaper. Plus because they are the same cap size, you can use the accessories from the hydroflask. Clearly superior. Now I wonder if there is an even better one.

My bike is a 150cc scrambler by the way and scramblers/dirt bikes have zero storage because they're meant to be lightweight and used for short rides not long open highways but it was cheap and fuel efficient and nimble in traffic so I bought one, I don't regret it tho

    • @christo930
      @christo930 Před 4 lety +11

      You should paint it white though. Why they made it black is beyond me. Black absorbs the sun's heat and black also radiates heat most efficiently. So black is the WORST color for both keeping water cold and for keeping it hot. It probably would have worked even better with a different color.

    • @monhi64
      @monhi64 Před 4 lety +7

      @@christo930 I believe that the water bottle is insulated to such a high degree that the color would make little difference. Think about how you can put 200 degree water in the bottle and pick it up and the outside is still cool the insides and the outsides can have a huge variance of temp and be fine

    • @christo930
      @christo930 Před 4 lety +2

      @@monhi64 Given the vacuum between the inner and outer, you are probably right. The color would be more important on the inside for hot beverages because it can only radiate the heat. However, a black body is very good at radiating heat so the outside can get warmed by the sun and then radiate the heat. But, I don't know if it radiates in all directions as presumably the inside is not black.
      Given the test results, it probably doesn't matter anyway. I was utterly shocked that it kept coffee or whatever it was, hot, in the fridge for 6 hours. That is utterly amazing.

I say though on a 90 degree day it will melt the ice but once I left it for almost 36 hours because I filled it up the day before and left it in my car and drank some of it in the morning and it had ice but when I was coming home it melted but the water felt pretty cold like not stupid cold but I will say to the point where if you leave a drink with ice and come back after 3 hours when th ice is melted or basically I say about 45 degree because it had the same temperature feel of my fridge water.

      I have a couple hydroflask bottles and I’m pretty sure the lids that come with them are not insulated, I switch them out for the pop top insulated tops and it seems to stay colder longer so that could have been the difference in his testing, the other bottle probably comes standard with an insulated top, I will say I also have the thermoflask bottles from Costco and they work just as good for way less cost since you get two bottles for $20

That and the metal extends farther on one are the only differences I can see. It would be interesting to swap the caps and do the experiments again to see if its just the cap that makes the difference.

    James, I love your videos, this one hits close to home. I've got a damaged hypothalamus and temperature regulation is my biggest headache. I'm ALWAYS feeling overheated, so cold water/drinks are my best friends. I've come to rely on a brand called Tal. They are sold at Walmart and at a couple other stores like Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond under the Manna name. I've had amazing luck with them and have the Ranger series from 18oz all the way up to the big mamma 64oz and they keep things cold for-EVER. 26oz Ranger with the screw spout lid kept a 50/50 ice/water blend at temperature for about 48 hours being left in the back seat of my SUV last summer. I left Thursday night with it around 11PM, opened it Saturday night after sundown (somewhere after about 9:15pm, according to the sunrise/set chart) and there was still an appreciable amount of ice left in it and it was COLD!
    I'd love to see a ProjectFarm type test with Tal/Manna, Coldest, Kleen Kanteen, and whatever else you want to throw together!

    Part of the reason why the bottles have the same size lids is due to 3rd party ones such as for a spout lid or similar that you can swap them out for. My personal waterbottle is quite a bit larger than either of those, and it tends to be looking for the size for a bottle lid. I'd gotten a spout lid to replace the one needed to unscrew to drink from along with a strap/bag thing that I could fit it into as some added protection for my hiking gear.

      @blahorgaslisk7763 Před 4 lety

      The bottles being black is only a problem if you leave them in direct sunlight. But yes, it's not a optimal choice if you need the absolute best performance. Currently we can only speculate about how much of a difference it would make. If I remember the numbers correctly then the best of the bottles gained about 30 degrees over 24 hours when the ambient temperature varied from about 90 to 80 and change in the day. Unfortunately we don't know the temperature during the night. Given how slowly the temperature rose I don't think the color of the bottle made a huge difference, but only further testing could prove that either way.

    I've had a 1 gallon Coldest Water for over a year and it is AWESOME for keeping water cold. On Sunday evenings (around 7-8 pm) I put 4 trays of ice cubes in and a little more than 64 oz of cold water from my refrigerator. I work in a welding shop in northern Indiana (5:00 am-2:30 pm Mon-Thurs, 5:00 am-9:00 am on Friday) and depending on the time of year, I can sometimes get by with just adding more water on Tuesday, but usually add a tray of ice and top off with water. Wednesday through Thursday is pretty much the same routine. Where it gets interesting is this: I usually find cooler-than-tap water in the jug on Sundays after having sampled it occasionally during the weekend. There was one or two times that I have found very small pieces of ice when I got to fill it back up on Sunday evening. As far as drinking on the go, I got a lid for the jug that has a flip-up drinking spout that has a one-way valve that DOES NOT leak at all when it is in the up position even if the jug is upside down. I usually leave the spout up so I can just walk up to my jug sitting on my table in my work area and take a drink without even touching the jug; a real plus since even with gloves on, my hands still get pretty dirty. Another unique feature of the lid is that you can unscrew the part with the drinking spout to pour water into a cup...without removing the main lid. I also have a 64 oz jug with the same type of lid, as well as a 32 oz bottle with a no-spill lid. IMHOP, The Coldest Water is the best out there.

  • @PotionSplasher
    @PotionSplasher Před 3 lety +2

    The difference in temperature is likely due to both the better cap on the coldest bottle that insulates the neck, and also likely a thicker layer of air to insulate. In the pool floating test we saw that the coldest bottle floated up quicker and since they’re both full of water and made of aluminum and plastic it’s likely the coldest bottle has a larger pocket of air between the metal layers leading to better insulation.
