Well they were huge here in Canada; as Fil mentions at the end of the video they had a string of Gold and Platinum albums in Canada and some success in the States as well. There was an explosion of interesting bands in Canada in the 70's in large part due to the government bringing in the Cancon regulations in 1971 that said radio stations had to play a certain percentage (25% in the 70's) of Canadian music. Before then Radio was dominated in Canada by American and British music. The first album of theirs I bought was "On Record" in 1972. I pretty much bought every album and single they released through the 70's after that. Saw them live 3 times in the 70's on the "Electric Jewels", "Stand Back" and "Whole Worlds Goin' Crazy" tours when they were at their peak. They were a great live band. By the way they did get noticed in the States in the 70's opening on tours for The Rolling Stones and Styx among others.

Thank you for this. As a Canadian, I've always been really proud of our musical talent. We really went through an extra special time during the 70s and 80s with Rush, Triumph, April Wine, Chilliwack, Fludd, BTO, Max Webster, Harlequin just to name a few. Myles Goodwyn was so prolific as a song writer. His music has been a part of the soundtrack of my life since I was a little kid. Sadly we lost him a few days ago, but his music will always live on.

I had heard of April Wine but only got into them recently (for some reason late 70's early 80's rock was a blind spot for me save Motorhead). Really this entire lineup blows me away. They are so tight you would think they had been in this lineup for years. I agree that he is criminally obscure when taking into account how amazing his drumming is and how well remember his solos live were by people who seen them.

Thanks for this review. Myles Goodwyn retired a few months ago, but the band plays on and I saw their concert last night (June 14) in Victoria, British Columbia. In the 1970s and into the 1980s, Canadian radio gave April Wine a lot of airplay, and as you note, they had several huge hits in the U.S. as well, both singles and albums.
In 1980 at the age of 16, I was planning to see them but there was a heavy police presence at the show, and I could see the cops were frisking each person on admission. I was in possesion of, uh...something that would have landed me in jail at that time, so I didn't go in. In those days, tickets were bought at the gate on the night of the concert, so I wasn't out of pocket. A mere 43 years later, I finally saw them live.
As a Canadian growing up in the 70s and early 80s, April Wine was a big part of the soundtrack of my adolescence and early adult life, which made last night's concert a special event. Thanks again for this review of a great concert in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Yes ma'am, I will second your Canadian bands plug. I am a '60s - '70s rocker but those bands could hang with anybody. Having spent a lot of time in and with a local band(s) I always wanted to give Ric and Triumph a double high five for getting as much (or maybe more) full sound from a three piece band as ZZ Top ever did. And Triumph did not attempt to use full cranked distortion to mask the dead spots that are so hard to avoid with three pieces.

I lived in Dartmouth Nova Scotia where Myles Goodwyn came from (waverly) but that is just outside of Dartmouth, and I had the privilege to see the band live in a local pub back many many years ago, and I mean many years ago, then caught a performance at our local forum. The cool thing about Myles is when he should have been listening in the classroom he was was pounding off lyrics. He was a great guy.
The last time I saw him play was in another pub in Dartmouth in around 1991 (I could be wrong on that date, I had a few too many). Me, and a few of my friends knew every song April Wine recorded, and he got a kick out of us while we sang right along with him through most of the songs. Well the best we could while taking swigs of our beer. The amusing thing about it all is that he was smiling from ear to ear because he got a kick out of watching us follow right along.
    Great times.

Myles Goodwin is still touring, after beating health issues and Mercer, the drummer, just retired a few years ago, playing for ‘Wine well into his ‘70’s. 🎸🎸🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

April Wine was unusual in the fact that they had three lead guitarists and they where all good. It's surprising that they could stay together as long as they did considering the huge egos that most lead guitarists have. These guys where epic stadium rockers.

They played my East Scarborough, Ontario high school twice in the early 70's when they were a four-piece/2-guitar band. Even in a high school gym they gave one hell of a performance. I was on the dance committee and got to meet the guys in the dressing room (the teacher's lounge) and their crew during setup and tear down. I learned a lot of little things that I used when my own band started getting local gigs. How to setup a PA, soundboard, lights etc. As long as you weren't a pain in the arse, AW's crew would let me watch, ask questions and learn. I followed their career as they went from playing high schools and opening for Canadian bands in arenas to opening for huge American and British bands on long tours. I always caught them when they'd hit Toronto again and they'd invariably blow the main act off the stage. With the addition of Brian Greenway they hit their peak in the late 70's/early 80's. But the endless touring was burning them out by the early 80's. Especially Myles Goodwyn and Gary Moffat. Moffat leaft the band, Myles went off to a Caribbean island (for tax reasons as well as just to un-burn-out, and the band went into hiatus for years. This happened at the very peak of their popularity, but by the early 80's Myles had been touring almost non-stop with AW nearly 14-years. But they went from playing high schools to headlining arena tours. Opening on Stadium tours for 50K people. Just a bunch of hosers from Nova Scotia and Montreal who made it to the very highest levels of the world of Rock N Roll. And they did it one gig at a time over a decade's worth of hard work.

I had no idea that April Wine were a thing outside of Canada. They played the high schools when I was a student in suburban Toronto. Rush, Fludd, Leigh Ashford, A Foot In Cold Water, Edward Bear, Motherlode. I'm about a year younger than Geddy Lee. He went to Newtonbrook High School when I was attending Downsview Secondary less than two miles apart. Rush played in our cafeteria where dances were set up. Pics are in one of the yearbooks.
Over my later years i've managed to make acquaintances with musicians of that era. They still live to gig and they still put on a good show.

About the volume/effects pedal .. back around 1971, Grand Funk Railroad finished their concert and they were going to back onstage for an encore, but someone stole Mark Farner's pedal from from the stage right after they did a sledgehammer version of Gimme Shelter, well, the announcer came onstage and told the audience: "whoever copped Mark's pedal, give it back and they will play some more....." "we will give it back to you after the show...

First Glance is my favorite though. " Hot on the wheels of love". Myles really show his range on Roller in the opening. Also that double lead is only second to Thin Lizzy's. The band started in my home province of Nova Scotia, in later years they would often do shows in small towns around the province, presumably for the fun of it as there weren't enough seats to make much money. Classic Canadian rock and character.

@@rickleblanc8900 I concur. Prior to joining April Wine, Mercer was in the band Mashmakhan. They had a hit called "As the Years Go By" in '70. I remember buying the '45'. It had a great organ part😁 April Wine sometimes recorded at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec (far north of Montreal). Many popular bands recorded there, including Rush, Bee Gees, Bowie, and Chicago. After many years, it deterioted greatly. Later on, it burned down. Kind of sad. There's quite a few videos on CZcams of the studio, including recording sessions by April Wine and Rush.
