    Just a tip The front Damper of the crank , There are 4 bolts in the centre ,you remove those and the damper comes off quite easy you don't need to remove the perimeter ones .

      Otherwise flip the belt so the strings are inside, that way the rubber can flex and allow it to slip into place.

    Next time, rotate the belt so that the flat side is to the inside. That will give you exactly enough extra belt diameter to fit around the balancer without resorting to force.
    That works because with the friction side facing outward, you are now bending the belt so that the cleats are pulling away from each other. In normal orientation, bending the belt pulls the cleats against each other; reducing the flexibility.

    "turn the belt inside out so that the cogs of the V-belt point outward! This provides an additional 1/2" in diameter to the belt.

      I have a 3116 on my generator set and did this same job. For me it was easier just to remove the damper. It is a separate piece from the crankshaft pulley. So, the damper comes off by removing the eight bolts, and the pulley stays in place on the crankshaft. The whole job took me about half an hour from start to finish.
      Also, it's a good idea the check the bearing in the idler. If it feels "gritty" the idler should be replaced while the belt is being changed. The water pumps on these engines seem to last a long time, so probably just changing the idler and the belt will give many more miles/hours of service.

    Rainman Ray those pieces of paper you received from the classes you took called certificates. The porcelain room needs them. I’m very impressed that a backwoods Redneck mechanic videos his quality work.
    Reminds me when one of your relatives fixed my truck on the side of the road in Tennessee. I suggested to disconnect the batteries and he said “ no need to for the alternator, there’s no power there until the motor is running”. After big blue flash and paramedics helped him up. He said “WOW that was shocking” paramedic said “I guess that’s how you lost your teeth!”

      Repaired a mates Subaru XV TX-580 box with code P2763 and workshop manual said 2 hours but took me 5 hours, lots of frustrating other issues on the valve body.

    I swapped from cars to heavy diesels, and while it was probably harder work on the bigger stuff, I enjoyed it a lot more because of the more relaxed time restraints. As a dealership mechanic I had to account for every minute of the day, but as a heavy vehicle mech it was much more relaxed. These days I drive a desk. Boring but easy ;)

      i live in rural Victoria Australia, my neighbor has semi trucks dropped off, and a few months later they come and drive them away.
      he's one armed due to an accident way back when he was an apprentice (he's in his late 60's now i think) but rebuilds bloody huge deisel engines, i recall a generator that was dropped off once that was the size of a 20ft shipping container.

      Car dealerships are volume-driven so therefore they don't let their mechanics diagnose or do anything that takes up time. They're a mechanics' hell to work for and the turnover is very high. So they end up with dummies who know very little about what they're working on.

      I'm strictly a DIY mechanic but I think I could happily work on that truck. I've grown to really hate working on "modern" cars with spaces a three year old couldn't get a hand into and plastic components that shatter if you touch them once they reach five years old. I could not believe it the other day when I had to take the door skin off my VW Golf, as well as all the inside trim, just to change the window regulator!

    Not sure if you have any experience with tow trucks in your past but I want to toss some advice your way. Be mindful of your height when you're loaded. I generally use the fact that I'm a hair over 6' tall and know how high the bed is on the empty truck. If I can see the roof of the car I'm under my height plus the bed height, usually about 10 foot. It's not perfect but it gets you in the ballpark and helps avoid custom convertibles.

      We've also seen multiple vehicles that haven't had videos done on them. It's fairly obvious that he does more work at the shop than what he shows on here. He does more repairs than what we see, making more money than what we know. Not reeee-ing. Just saying that he doesn't show all that goes on at the shop.

    Also be careful of that key sound. I had my chevy burn to the ground because the ignition switch was grounding out behind the column. You didn't know until it burst into flames because it worked fine until it caught fire

    The trick to getting the belt over the damper is flipping belt inside out and working flat side over the damper. There are plenty of UTube content on the Cat 3126 engine so there is no need to stumble blind working on it.

    The tree company I worked for had a GMC bucket truck with a straight 6 cat motor . Was told it was a throw away motor ,could not be rebuilt. Always wondered why not.

      The cylinder liners are not replaceable in the block, like most larger diesels. The block has to be machined and a sleeve pressed in. So, engine has to be removed, disassembled and sent to a machine shop. Long and expensive process.

    Hey Ray. Large pry bar on the back side of the vibration dampener usually moves it no problem. It weighs about 30 or 40 pounds. Removing it is the preferred method to get that vee belt off lol CAT tech from Ring Power. Local Florida boy

      Center bolts though right? I've never removed the outer bolts to remove the dampener.

      @@brianm5186 the outer bolts hold just the dampener itself to the pulley hub. The inner bolts remove the entire hub and pulley assembly. He removed the correct bolts for what he was doing. Just need to pry on the dampener to get it off.

    Hey Ray..there's this thing called a "Shop Manual". It tells you how to do certain repairs on what you're working on..such things as "fan belt replacement, harmonic balancer removal, etc. etc."

    Tech tip. Use your grinder holding tool to remove the HUEI lines.you shove it between the top of the rubber and the line and push towards the pump. The rubber is a aid in pushing the clip. 7.3 use the same type of lines on their pumps.

    Reminds me of days working for a shop owned by a family member of mine. He also built his shop from the ground up, over 40 years now, so that meant working on second hand tow trucks. Alot of memories working on the shops own equipment, our own vehicles and customer cars.

    We always had basic parts on the shelves for the wreckers like belts and filters and hoses even belt tensioner and of course tires on rims down time on a wreckers means no money being made we also had brakes a few of the drivers was skilled mechanics and we did most of our own repairs

    From the CAT manual (my '96 in my RV), the easiest cold start method is to cycle the key 3 times - as soon as the intake warming light turns off, turn the key off and immediately back on until the third time, at which point you start the engine. Mine starts like a champ, even in the cold weather we have here in the PNW (I don't start it in the winter unless it's going to be driven)

    As a HD tech that used to be a auto tech, I’m a fan of Ray’s channel, his antics, wise guy comments, his wasteful display of brake clean and complete lack of real torque clicks/beeps!
    I’m astronomically surprised just how far Ray is willing to go by doing more work with the thought of doing less work.
    I mean hammer, silicone spray, ratchet straps and prybar action to replace a belt instead of just removing the balancer.
    Also, not wire brushing some of the rust off the Charge Air pipe clamp T-Bolts, then not loosening them enough to fit a hose pick to release the bond to the pipe.
    Plus, HD techs equivalent to Ray don’t get paid $50/hr, we’re lucky to get 25-35/hr!!!
    Only the special techs get paid 45/hr or more, you know the guys with 30yrs plus experience that now are the lead techs or bosses!!!
    They get paid more while knowing less about current technology than us younger guys will forget more than the older guys think they know!!!

    I've never understood why diesel engines aren't washed with pressure washers before you start repairing things.. Everything is so much easier and cleaner to work with once you've done this. I used to do this when I worked as a mechanic on agricultural machinery such as large tractors and wheel loaders. It's so easy.. check for faults first, wash, repair.

      Because lazy, lol. Soak everything in a mixture of degreaser & cosmoline remover and kerosene before you get any water on it, let it work in for a little while, then spray it off with a pressure washer strong enough to remove the crappy factory paint job from a '90s Dodge pickup. Then throw some kind of good, slightly alkaline biodegradable cleaner on everything to deal with the stuff that isn't of the oil/grease/fuel/sludge type variety, and rinse that off. Probably won't even need any elbow grease. If you want to pretend it's a show truck, you could finish up with an old wash mitt and some Dawn in hot water, but there's no real need. If you want to be "OCD thorough," blast off all the oil-based garbage you can see/reach (rinse from bottom up; water is not an oil-based cleaner's friend)... then stick it back in the parking lot until it's completely dry, bring it back to your water supply, lift at least slightly in the front (unless you're truly a masochist and/or have a creeper fetish), slide underneath, and soak soak soak everything that you can. Blast it off with the pressure washer again, then do a second thorough high-pressure rinse from above (front/sides/fenderwells) before you worry about the plain old dirt (non oil based) crap.
      Things like this are yet another reason why it's good to hire an employee for the not quite grand master mechanic level tasks. Get one who can detail (properly), and he - or she - can still be bringing in $500 to $1,000 on the days when you don't need a serious second set of hands "on the mechanic side." Assuming, that is, that Florida drivers actually give two shiny sh!ts about how their vehicles look outside/inside/underhood. Considering the way they drive, I have my doubts. But if you're in the same facility as a body shop, they might be able to throw you an occasional bone (or vice versa, depending on how you look at it) and have the employee wet sand / compound / glaze / wax / wax a vehicle. Especially if it's the kind of gravel lot cut rate body shop that is owned by someone who thinks(???) a full filtered air paint booth setup is not required and, therefore, tends to have dirt in its paint jobs (along with orange peel finishes). Either way, there's always something for a detail person to do in an area with more than a thousand people in it, and you don't need all that much mechanical ability to provide real time-saving help (/do the piddling jobs - which is most of them, come to think of it, but...).

    If you would had flipped the belt inside out, with the ribs facing out, it would had went over the dampener a bit easier. But ya, normally, the dampener does have to come off. For a spare, i keep the next size up belt in the truck. It had just enough to get some tension on it, and it will get u out of a bind.

    If you park the whole truck in a freezer over night the pulley should shrink enough for the belt to slip on. Great work Ray. Not scared to tackle jobs he's not done before.

    I would believe you required a new tensioner anyway, as that was the reason our Honda chewed its serpentine belt in half. The tensioner bearing allowed it to angle slightly, diverting the belt off its natural course.

    That belt lube is great and a ratchet strap. I wish I had thought of things like that. The best I have is my lower radiator hose blowing out 30 miles from the shop and no tow trucks available for hours. I used gorilla tape and water from a water fountain in front of an office building. Lol

    I've had my fair share of working on a 3126. Be aware the gasket on the oil filter housing and the timing gear cover tend to blow out. Other than that look up the history on this engine.. It's like a ford 6.0... Once you get the bugs out it's a pretty good engine

    Ray i love cat motors especially the 600hp which i had in my 3 trailer road train before the 1.5 million engine rebuild and it was rebuilt .3 times , cat motors are the best engines in tropical areas going from cold in Adelaide to Darwin there gutsy mate hauling 125 tons

    I remember doing my first water pump belt now after watching you struggle with this one Lol the other mechanics in the shop were laughing at me as I was you now you should know the belt will go over the balancer but here is my tech tip for you so next time you don’t have to fight with it so much, don’t take the tensioner loose at all cut the old belt off if it is still on it put the new belt on and start it on the pulleys then go tap the key and the belt jumps on and is tight , put the new tensioner on then put the serpentine belt on and your done keep up the good work !!

    Man, a few of us used to medium/heavy duty trucks would have warned you...
    Always go into something that crusty with full intent and ability to replace all the standard maintenance items.
    In this case I would have ordered both belts, tensioner assembly, and any idler pulleys. It never fails when you see belts looking like that that there IS other problems. And those are the cheapest stuff there to change out. And you're already there anyway.

    Since it's a toothed belt, if you turn the belt inside out, wouldn't it have a slightly larger "inner" diameter with the smooth side of the belt on the inside? Aaand nevermind, somebody beat me to it already.

    I never would have forced that belt.

    I would have had to find out about that crank dampener's procedure.
    That would possibly turn into an idea of a half inch longer belt, then, it would force on easier, I suppose, but be long for the install.
    Now I know what to do.
    At GM, in the truck shop, we would have given it to a guy with ten more years on Cat than me.
    Ours were 3116 Cats in '91.
    Everything was easier for the climate recalls we did, because it was all brand new stuff.
    I thought the larger band clamp might be easier, but you made it anyway.

    That belt tensioner explosion is why eye protection is critical even when you think there is no risk. It's usually the unexpected that gets you.

      Yes - In fact, every time I got something in my eye, that required I go to an eye dr. for it's removal, I wasn't wearing safety glasses, because I didn't expect it. For example, I was removing an ordinary paper staple w/ needle nose pliers, and the staple shattered - broke in half, and went into my eye!

      @@thelaughingman79 the rubber in the balancer ages and gets hard or out right de laminates and slips and at that point the crank will start flexing. i saw a balancer out right tare in half and that mad a real mess of things. they are hard to find for the older cat's but i run fluidampr on my truck and i love it.

    Working on larger trucks is actually a lot easier than working on late model cars because you have enough clearance you can actually get to everything....unless it's from the rust belt in which case I wish you luck!

    There is a high pressure filter kit to go in between the HUI pump and the head. It protects the injectors from the debris that comes out of the HUI pump when it fails.

    I inherited a tool box from my dad. He was I guess you could say an old school mechanic. There is an assortment of modified tools in there. If he didn’t have what he needed, he would cut, weld, bend and grind until until the tool worked. He made/modified tools for everything from antique european makes to earth movers.

    You are doing a great job, although when I did my apprenticeship at the SA Rail and when working on the Diesels we were taught to clean the entire motor and engine bay first, that way we could see any leaks or other problems with fluids.
    Most of my time was learning machining and on element systems with steamers. Most of what I did with diesels was with the injector systems. This was in the seventies.

    I had a lot of experience, building and designing RVs. While driving my own, I was approching Redding, Ca. when my RV, a Ford, started overheating and I lost my alternator by Shasta Lake. When I looked to see what went wrong, my damper pulley bolt had unscrewed and my V belt was twisted all to hell, nearly shredded. fortunately I managed to convince the belt back on and the best luck of all, was that my damper pulley bolt was lying loose inside the pulley. All I had to do, was screw it back in. God was watching out that day, and the belt stayed on, barely making it to the Redding exit when the belt came off again and I was able to coast to just shy of a parts house without any walking to speak of.
