      - Rename an actual Golf to "Passat" to be able to pass it for x2 price.

    • @Osprey850
      @Osprey850 Před rokem +8

      On one hand, it could be a coup for AMD to simply price the 7X00 series the same as the 6X00 series. On the other hand, if they do that, then Nvidia will probably just slash their prices to compensate, leaving AMD in no better competitive position while making hundreds of dollars less per card than they could've been making, upsetting shareholders. The safest thing to do to keep those shareholders happy is to price the cards close to Nvidia's prices, but just a little less. That's what they did 2 years ago and will probably do again, but it'd sure be great if they resisted that temptation this time around.

    • @panvitounis6373
      @panvitounis6373 Před rokem

      @@Osprey850 What you just said could be a very good arguement, except for the fact that Lovelace is much more expensive to produce compared to RDNA 3. So, AMD can keep the same prices while still having good margins and NVIDIA would not be able to do the same unless they sold the 4000 series at cost or at a loss. They are not as greedy this generation as they seem, it's just that Lovelace and its TSMC 4N node are just really expensive, and don't forget that they still have warehouses of 30 series cards to sell. AMD doesn't have that same problem and thus could lower their prices to the same level as Ampere while performing as well as the 4000 series, which would cripple the ability for Ampere stock to sell on a profit, which is what NVIDIA needs. AMD definitely knows this, so I just hope they play their cards correctly this generation. I would still expect for RDNA 3 to be priced above RDNA 2, of course, it only makes sense with the performance uplift it will bring, but definitely not as high as the 80% increase in MSRP from the RTX 3070 to the RTX "4080" 12GB.

    Based upon the recent Nvidia earnings call, where Jensen Huang explained that they would be adjusting supply to allow the new cards to fit into the current product stack alongside the excess stock of 30 series cards, it could be that Nvidia are deliberately overpricing their new cards to make the 3080s and 3090s seem better value until they sell through. Then when AMD launch their new cards in bulk Nvidia can price slash the 40 series cards down to a competitive level, albeit higher than AMD due to all the proprietary technologies (DLSS 3.0 etc...) They can then launch a 4090Ti to further reclaim the top GPU title with a significant lead at between $1500 and $2000 for the whales, as well as a 4070 and 4060 to replace the 30 series placeholders in the lower product stack.

      Nvidia are not geniuses, they are pricing based on the business performance of previous gen:
      - Pascal was great, sold like hotcakes -> Turing was overpriced shit "backed up" by marketspeak showing off tech that wouldn't become relevant until basically now (4 yrs later).
      - Turing was overpriced shit, didn't sell well -> Ampere was more competitively priced (either kept the MSRP or lowered it comparatively), then crypto craze happened.
      - Crypto craze happened, inflating a bubble -> Ada is overpriced shit "backed up" by marketspeak showing off tech that wouldn't become relevant.. OH WAIT... xD
      The bubble burst so fast that there was probably no time to re-evaluate and adjust the business model. Either that, or Jensen just made this up like week before - "hey, screw that, rename that $600 4070 and make it 4080-12 for $900". Wouldn't be the first time he's done that.
      The only risk for nvidia is that AMD can now do whatever they want and cannot lose. They can price nvidia completely out of the market, *if* they want to, and they don't have a huge oversupply of previous gen. Not that they will do that - but they can.

    @PixelShade Před rokem +22

    The most impressive parts about nvidias benchmark graphs is how they are obfuscating the actual performance improvement by tweaking the condition to favor the RTX4000-series. In the graph footer they state that they are using 4K, highest settings, DLSS performance mode (when applicable), RT, Nvidia reflex and Nvidia frame generation on the 4000-series (when applicable). Once you take all of that into account that, how much performance is actually gained? In Resident Evil the 4080 12GB performs similarly to the 3090, even though the 4000 series has better RT performance. The fake interpolated frames in "Next Generation Games" increase fps drastically yes, but with faked frames, but it does so with an added latency impact (Which has been confirmed by the "vice president of Applied Deep Learning Research" at nvidia). So it's gonna be really interesting to see how well these cards perform by the HUB benchmark suite. And if these techniques just ends up being sales pitches for nice performance graphs.

    And they obviously knew that if they were to call the 12GB variant a 4070 with that insane price tag, the backlash would be immensely higher. The performance of the 12GB 4080 vs the 3090 is actually somewhat troubling, it seems slower in rasterised games and the apparent RT performance isn't a grand leap either. • @nap8187
      @nap8187 Před rokem +9

      Historically xx70 cards typically match the xx80 of the prior gen.

    • @loki76
      @loki76 Před rokem

      The 4080 12GB should be equal in raster performance to a 3090. But it will be faster in RT performance natively. And then there is DLSS 3 that would make it WAY faster than 3090 since it will be limited to DLSS 2.
      That said, yes, the 12GB version is too costly. But a direct comparison between both in performance and in future. 4080 12GB is better. Because of RT and DLSS 3. Those 2 things tip the scale.
      When you play a game with DLSS 3 on that 4080 you will have maybe TWICE the performance of the 3090 doing DLSS 2. So any DLSS 3 game will make the 4080 cards miles better.
      It seems it all hangs on DLSS 3 going forward.

    • @KryssN1
      @KryssN1 Před rokem +1

      We don't have any benchmarks yet, how then can you conclude that it's slower in rasterization than previous generation.
      Just because it has less SM does not mean everything, the IPC improvements could be substantial gen over gen this time over.
      It would only take average IPC improvment of 30% gen on gen over 2 years to make 60SM equal to 80SM of 3090, nothing out of ordinary to what we are used to.
      Then if they had substantial increase, node improvments, cache improvements, tensor conres improvments, we may see it wiping out 3090 in Ray Tracing.
      If I am buying a 3090 or 4080 12GB class card, then you should not only look at Raster, Ray Tracing is already here today, it's not new gen.

    Is power consumption in GPU's linear due to processing load or more 'flat'? This impacts not only power consumption and costs but also the heating and cooling of the room the GPU is being used in. 400W in a well insulated room is a lot of heat - especially if the PC is just idling away doing web browsing and writing for 'half a day'.

    As much as I hate to say it, a £900 (UK pricing doesn't stand a chance of being a lower number than USD) 4080 *cough* -4070- should force the prices down.

    So, that whole DLSS 3 frame insertion thing. Qualcomm had released something like this a year ago or so, to be used with the Oculus/Meta Quest 2 when wirelessly streaming VR/AR from a PC called ASW (Asynchronous Spacewarp), that does a very similar thing with a tiny mobile chip. Sure, there is a huge possibility that this is going to be a waaay better execution, but they didn't invent the idea, and shouldn't get the credit for something soooo revolutionary. Glad it's there though!

It's done in realtime with the aim of increasing performance, however, current ahead-of-time solutions for upping frames doesn't work that well either. Very skeptical how well it would work apart from some cinematic scenes... But then it doesn't make sense for nvidia to release something that bad and putting emphasis on it either... It should work well in presentation, assuming any image jitter is very minor, but it *might* also add 1 frame of delay to the processing chain...
      Meaning it will look smoother, but the input delay either stays the same in the best-case-scenario (no competitive advantage), or it actually adds input delay despite running smoother, which sort of defeats the purpose except for non-competitive or casual games, where the improved immersion of the faked framerate is worth the cost of the input delay.

NVIDIA has been criticized the last few generations for calling a mobile GPU 80 class when it's roughly equivalent to a desktop 70 performance. Now when Nvidia calls this generation mobile line an 80 class unit, it will compare to the 4080 12 gb desktop unit, and that's what they'll likely compare it to in marketing.
