      @s0lastsummer7 Před rokem +14

      @@eddraper (sorry this reply is so long after yours lol) I have one anecdotal example of this. I lived with a woman in her late sixties for about a year who was like a second mother to me. She'd been through a lot medically: she already had a painful bad back, and one day she fell against a sharp corner on a piece of furniture and it jabbed her in the side, later she'd find out that it had caused a traumatic injury to the bottom of her lung, and her body went haywire over the next several days trying to heal it, but she became septic. She had hospital anxiety so waited until she felt like she was literally dying to finally agree to go to the ER, and dying she was indeed. She lost consciousness getting into the car, awoke briefly once in the hospital, only long enough to realize what was happening before lapsing into a coma. She was fully comatose for a month, but she remembers so much, including horrific abuse she suffered at the hands of an absolute troglodyte of a male nurse who resented having to take care of her while she had no control of herself. She heard and felt everything. She awoke with significant brain damage and had to learn to walk and talk all over again, it took a very long time, and her brain didn't ever fully recover, so she continued having memory loss, confusion, general slowness, etc plus everything she'd been through caused her such mental anguish that her heart couldn't handle the anxiety, she started going into v-fib and other scary types of arrhythmia, she never knew if she was having a panic attack or a heart attack, and her brain wasn't helping because it wouldn't let her think clearly about it. ANYWAY, aaaaaalllllll of this info leading up to my story I'm telling you, the day the scammer called her. It was the USA tax scam. She knew absolutely nothing about scam calls or the IRS in general -- and as Jim put it, a guilty victim is more likely to comply... she owed back taxes because she'd been in a friggin coma, and then she just... forgot. For a couple years. It wasn't her fault. These scumbags called her up and said they were sending police in 45 minutes unless she paid $X.xx with her credit card. She didn't have the money and never would -- and since she realized as soon as they said she owed unpaid taxes, that she actually DID, she absolutely panicked. She started sobbing and I was downstairs, and I heard her crying and thudding down the stairs at an alarming rate for a woman with a walking cane. She breathlessly told me what they'd said, and keep in mind that they can hear all of this. She tells me her chest is tight, she feels like this is it, she's finally having a heart attack, she's going to die, help me Summer, what are you going to do if I die, I haven't added you to my will and you need me, etc -- she was losing it. I gestured for her to give me her phone, I muted our end, and I told her the IRS doesn't call people. They send mail. I asked her if the caller had an accent. Her eyes lit up. "How did you know that?" I sat her down and quickly told her it wasn't real, nobody was coming to our home, nobody was arresting her, they are just trying to rob you blind. Once I had her calm enough to ensure me that she didn't think she was actually having a heart attack, I told her I was going to talk to the scammer, we were going to test his limits and punish him accordingly. I unmuted the call and told the man that I was her daughter, that my mother was waiting for the ambulance because she had a bad heart and he'd scared her into an emergency situation. It was basically, "oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that. Do you know where she keeps her wallet?" I wish I were kidding. I told him that we were facing extremely expensive medical bills if she survived this event. And he did the bit where he "talked to the super-wiser about her situation" and came back with a "compromise" if she could pay an entire, like, 75% of the original amount immediately. 🙄 I told him flatly that we'd starve to death. He said "oh. Sorry." And then a long silence. ".....is it a Visa or Mastercard?" I am just glad I remembered that it was her phone I was holding before I could chuck it out the window. I was furious. These people have no souls, no remorse. No concern for people's lives. From what I understand, a lot of them truly believe that ALL Americans are rich, and that if an American claims they can't afford the scam, they're lying. But I don't know if they truly believe that, or if it's what they tell themselves to justify their "job." Anyway, so, I spent about 45 minutes of that idiot's life being the most insufferable victim on earth, giving him fake card numbers pretending I couldn't quite read them, I was dyslexic, oops my bad, hold on, I dropped it under the fridge, I can't quite reach it.... shoot, I'll try another, let me find it.... gosh darn, it's expired, let me move the fridge then...**fake grunting noises** ... got it! Should we start over? I'll start over. Etc. Once he really started swearing and yelling at me, I calmly asked him where the police were, to which he snapped "what the hell are you talking about police!" I said "well you promised they'd pick her up in 45 minutes, and it's been over an hour... I'm just wondering if I should keep waiting for the ambulance? Or will the police get here first and they can take her to the hospital? Or maybe they can just bring the coroner since you probably killed her anyway..." and that was the moment -- mom couldn't hold it in anymore and scammer could hear her burst of laughter in the background, finally giving us away. Apparently he's going to find us and kill us both and do unspeakable things to both our corpses, but it's been several years and I'm still waiting. 🤔😛
      Despite the cutthroat nature of these scammers, I hope you got some enjoyment from my long as heck story. 😂 it's an interesting memory, for sure -- I'm just glad she was okay in the end, that I wasted that jerk's time, and that I was able to educate her on scams before I finally moved out so she was able to defend herself better after that. 👍🏼 making sure our elderly and vulnerable people are aware of these scams is so important.

She's had a hard time these last few years and the part I was most worried about after the fact was not the money (although the financial loss was tough) but her mental wellbeing. Thankfully she's pulling through fine and she's got a good support network, but the toll is still damaging. During the attempted scam of the lady with cancer, I was actually sitting here saying to myself out loud, "please call her", my brother had two battles with cancer and luckily he beat it both times and is now living a normal and healthy life. I love everything you do and what everyone in the scambaiting world does, never ever stop doing your work. On a side note, if that lady had lost any money to the scammers, I would have quite happily donated to her, I don't have much money, but I do have a heart, I would have given what I could. • @mikoto7693
      @mikoto7693 Před 2 lety

      Oh they are absolute scum of the Earth all right and they do it in so many ways. My only experience with scammers myself were emails from an apparent Nigerian Price. I had a bit of fun stringing them along as long as I could. The other was those popups whilst surfing the internet claiming that my computer had been badly compromised either by hackers or computer viruses and that I needed to call the number on the popup immediately to prevent something bad happening to my computer. I didn’t actually know that it was a scam for quite some time but never fell for it. Mostly because I first encountered it on a school computer in the IT class so I ignored it since they weren’t my computers.
      When it happened at home I was a bit confused because I had a fully protected computer with the very latest security package that had everything from antiviruses to firewalls so I knew it was highly unlikely that my computer had a virus or had been hacked or compromised. It did get me to do another scan of my computer to check for any signs of anything compromised or infected but there was nothing to find. And besides that warning my computer just kept functioning normally, so I didn’t believe the popup’s warning that soon my computer would stop working unless I called the phone number to get it sorted.
      As far as my experience of attempted scams being tried on me goes, it’s quite limited. But actually I might be targeted for a scam right now and over the last couple weeks or so. I keep getting called on my phone by a number that seems to be coming from London. They also only actually have called outside of normal working hours, usually either in evening or during weekends including Sundays. What’s odd is that they never left a voicemail. The other problem is that my phone says this number/call is coming from London. The problem with that is I have nothing to do with London. I haven’t been in London or near it for a tad over 20 years. I only know one person who lives there already has my number and I his. I don’t have any business there. And the one time I did answer the phone without speaking there was also silence until they hung up. So I think it’s a scam call.
      Finally on my list of different experiences of scams was a catfish one and one of my best friends very nearby felt victim to it. Because we’re also work colleagues we usually arrive at the building half an hour before our shift and sit in the cafeteria to chat. One day she came in happier than usual and told me that she’d met a new friend online and that she liked him. At first it seemed like a good thing for her, especially since I’ve made friends online myself. My friend also said that her new friend really seemed to understand her, had many similar beliefs, interests and whatnot. I think the first red flag for me was when she told me that her new buddy was an American soldier currently being deployed to some far away country. I knew catsish scammers often pretend to be an American soldier, sometimes pulling up a random image of a soldier from the depth of the internet.
      So I went and told her that I think she was being set up and prepared to be scammed out of her money and took her through all the steps of how the scam works. I know her enough to know that she didn’t quite believe me though she kept it in mind. But then, of course, a few weeks later her new friend spun one of the typical tactics to try to get her money. He claimed that his very young nephew had a terrible accident, that the boy got hit by a speeding car and an ambulance took him straight to the hospital. But the boy had some very serious wounds and was taken to surgery to have the life saving treatment. But now he didn’t have enough money to cover the cost of all the medical treatments so could she lend him a sizable chunk of money to help his son and promising to repay him later.
      And so it was turning out just like I’d predicted, even down to the kinds of sob stories designed bto get the victim to give him money. Naturally my friend immediately cut all contact with the catfish scammer.

    I'm surprised people in the UK would fall for this. HMRC will always contact you by letter. Assuming you're an employee of a company (and not self-employed), the company is responsible for making the relevant tax deductions and paying HMRC. If HMRC are going to take anyone to court, it would be the company for not paying the correct taxes not the employee. It's sad that the vulnerable are always the big target.

    In what seems a lifetime ago, I worked in HMRC in one of the contact centres. There was a scam email doing the rounds that was sent to people outside the U.K. (this was listed on the website and in those days they didn’t have emails going externally), saying you’ve won the lottery and need to pay some tax to receive your winnings, usually about 5k. An American rang and he explained to me that he wanted to know when he was going to get his winnings. I told him he had been scammed and to go to the local police, but he kept asking for his winnings. This went on for about ten minutes and he still wasn’t understanding what had happened. Finally I asked him if he had ever been to the U.K. and he said no. I then asked if he had ever played the lottery in the U.K. and he said no. I then asked why he thought he may have won a lottery he had never played in a country he had never visited. It went quiet for a bit and then he asked what he needed to do, and I said go the the police and report it using the HMRC website as part of the evidence.

    Scamming people is disgusting. Scamming people who have cancer and are worried to the core about the length of life they have left, is beyond depraved.
    Good job once again Jim.
