Honduras: Escaping violence and poverty | DW Documentary

  • Every year, tens of thousands of people from the central American nation of Honduras leave their home country to try and reach the United States. A dangerous journey that often ends in death. The refugees are escaping poverty, gang violence and natural catastrophes.
Honduras: a nation hit ever more frequently by extreme weather such as tropical hurricanes and flooding. Almost 70 per cent of the population lives in poverty; more than 50 per cent of those are in dire need. Violent incidents, gang warfare and abductions are part of daily life here. The murder rate is one of the highest in the world. Many Hondurans see no other option but to leave. They are undeterred by the high cost; the risk that they’ll die on the journey or be murdered by human traffickers; or just how unlikely it is that they’ll actually make it to the US at all. Often, it’s the men that leave; their wives and children stay behind and never hear back from their husbands and fathers, even if they’ve managed to enter the US and are living illegally there. The money they promised to send to their families never arrives. As a result, more and more women feel compelled to flee themselves. They might take one of their children along, or leave them all with relatives. The country is losing its life blood - in some regions, villages are populated only by children and elderly people. Aid organizations try to help the most desperate, but even they are powerless to stem the tide of refugees.

I don't understand why North Americans think they need to bring the bible to an already Christian country. Ok, charity work is much needed, also development aid, teaching, etc. You may also talk about the bible and Jesus Christ. But why founding new denominations enticing away followers from other churches. That is not missionizing, that is proselytism.

As a Honduran, this is the best depiction of the situation in the country. The sad thing is that there's no hope in sight. The current government, as well as the last one, has extremely close ties to criminal organizations. Also, corruption has destroyed all government institutions at all levels.

@Rocío Aguilera actually it varies. Porque este gobierno actual no es para nada US friendly, and they are as bad or worse than the last one. Lo que esta detras de esto es poca educación and legislators who can't read or write. People in Honduras don't run for government to serve they run for government to steal. No matter their political stance. Some are US friendly, others aren't, but their end goal is the same. Take as much as I can while in government.

I feel terrible for that elderly mom wondering whether her son is dead or alive. Her eyes are filled with so much pain, it's almost tangible. It's so very heartbreaking for anyone seeing that because WE all know that her son is no longer with us. I think, in her heart, she knows, as well, but that kind of pain is just too great to face and acknowledge without real proof. The extremely depressing part is that that the dangerous part isn't even the border crossing itself into the U.S. NOBODY reaches the border without paying the coyotes. Even if you were to reach the border on your own, as of right now you will be told to stay in Mexico until your asylum hearing. Then, the coyotes will find out you made it and didn't pay, and either need to come up with the money or it's lights out. That's assuming you're not kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. There's a disconnect in information from countries like Guatemala / Honduras to Mexico. They only hear stories about success, never about the danger involving Mexico. As someone who lives in the U.S. I strongly caution against making this journey. Not because I have a problem with immigrants, but because they find thousands of bodies near the border every year. It's not like it was 15+ years ago where you simply ride a train to the promised land, wait until nightfall and hop the fence / cross the Rio Grande.

I have been living in San Pedro Sula for more than two years, I can say with certainty that this city has its own rules, like all cities, but if they are observed, no one will suffer. Farmers are given special respect and they should become the main characters of the programs, because despite the hurricanes and floods, Honduras has enormous natural resources that need to be developed. Nothing was ever solved by fleeing to the USA, and stories about how everything badly do not reflect reality, since examples of successful Hondurans who rose from the bottom without anyone's help are not shown. Yes, there is corruption, but show at least one country in which it does not exist? Honduras is a good country, but one that needs to be worked on together, not run away from.

I try to watch documentaries from the countries my students come from. It is painful to watch the mother who does not know if her child is alive. The mother preparing to go with her special needs little girl. It is hard to find hope for Honduras. The people seem so stoic, resilient and hard working but too many circumstances (man made and nature made) are battling them.
Thank you Deutsche Welle for doing the work of reporting on places no one here goes or talks about.
If you can follow up about the mother and special needs child, that would be good. Many of us on this side care about each other and these precious children deserve the same our children do.

@Donnell Okafor let me explain you. I am Honduran. Here in Honduras only around 15% of the people finish High School. This value is even lower in rural areas. This is probably the typical family in which her husband took her away from her home when she was 15. Women in Honduras are submissive because otherwise she would probably become a victim of domestic violence. She didn't decide to have children. Women here have no voice or power to decide at home. They live to feed their man, have s*x when he wants, and raise their children. She can't get away because she is poor, she has three children, in her hometown she will never find a job and in the city nobody can take care of her kids while she's working. Finding a job in the city wouldn't be easy for her and salaries are extremely low.
In conclusion, she's not stupid, she lives in that situation because women have no choice here. You need to see life from the perspective of people here to understand that they are not free like you to decide what happens to their lives.

The sadness I have after watching this...
Even if you sent money directly to these people, the gangs would just come and take everything from them. First things first: the gangs have to go. But that's not going to happen when the government themselves is in on the action. If the government truly wanted to get rid of the gangs, it could be done. Colombia did it. The Philippines did it (although there was much bloodshed). You country simply cannot succeed when the people are being extorted by gangs.

    • @reyvingazo513
      @reyvingazo513 Před rokem

The Philippines never did it because it seems that the gangs crept their way to government...our Senate and Congress is a circus right now. Duterte messed the justice system of the country so bad that the son of The Justice Secretary who was caught with illegal marijuana was abstained in just 3 months (a record), while a jailed senator due to trumped up charges is still in prison for more than 6 years and not to mention the thousands killed who were presumed to be doing illegal drugs.

In the past, I traveled to Honduras many times as part of my parish mission team, and as the advance man where I would prepare for the arrival of the team. We served in San Francisco de al Paz, in the heart of Olancho, primarily building water purification systems, latrines, and sending medical missions. I also spent much time in Juticalpa, the capitol of Olancho. I was in the very church shown in this video and knew Padre Alberto Cauci. I love Honduras because I love the people. In spite of their poverty, they are some of the kindest, most generous, hard working people I have ever met. Are there bad people? Of course, all cultures have bad people. Will someone tell me why US companies invest millions of dollars in Chinese industries, when we could be having those same products manufactured, if not in the US, at least in our Central American neighbors. Living in Roatan (an island ouside Honduras but still a part of Honduras) this feels so far away. We live a pretend life comparing to this. Been to several places in this video and it is so different from "our" island. Makes me sad to know how it is in real on the mainland.

The US has become a dumping ground for dysfunctional, failed narco states. Our nation is now a flophouse for these people. Soon we will be just like them.

Your ignorance is showing. Contraception is not readily available and expensive. Abortion is banned. Sex Ed is minimal if at all. It is a strongly patriarchal culture that has led to rape, forced sexual violence and little access to health care. If you don't care enough to educate yourself kindly keep your comments to yourself.
