  • This is a fictional short story. However, the study referenced in the middle is based on a real study known as the "Lost In The Mall" experiment, which found that in the right conditions, we can assimilate or create entirely fake memories.

      I dont think this is the point of the video , to show that false memories can bring you success, but the purpose of the video is showing that there is this psychological phenomenon. It also could have been a bad achievement, this is not the point, the point is that we sometimes save memories that didnt really happen, let it be by having been told a lie by a friend or due to other reasons...

Like if you feel like you can't do something you can make yourself believe you have some kind of hidden talent on that, and convince yourself you just need to practice to make it come out because if you managed to practice enough to make the talent come out you're destined to be a very important person in the future. Maybe think your situation is like Thomas Alfa Edison,if it fails just keep trying and by the 1000th attempt you will succeed and have your name remembered throught history... or something

My sister was probably 4-5 and I was 5-6 but For some reason I believed that I was the one who was drowning that day and I have vivid memories of being saved by the same woman. Idk if it was just traumatic that my sister almost died or what but I was telling my family one day jokingly about this memory of mine and my parents and sister kinda looked at me like “that was your sister”. I denied that and said I can remember it but I kinda believe them now just because all of them believe that so I was prob just young and dumb.

    • @CaptainWumbo
      @CaptainWumbo Před 4 lety +16

      Maybe because it was so scary and you empathised with the danger your sister was in it felt like it happened to you. Memories have a way of being maintained by a sense of logic rather than pure recreation of the event as it happened. To a kid it might have made sense that something that scared them that much must have happened directly to them. Even to adults there's plenty of people who think they saw 9/11 in person when they only saw it on TV (not in a conspiracy sort of way, it's called a flashbulb memory).

      It only happened once from what i know and he even told me in that memory that that was how he used to be disciplined by his mother when he was a kid
      I sometimes jokingly mention it and my father always denies it and is like " that never happened, i never made you knee on legos with a bunch of books on your arms, i just told you that i had to do this"
      (But as he often beat me up after that when i was not how he wanted me to be it could be for sure, but he never denies having hit me for some reason, its weird)

      I have a feeling this advice you gave is one of the most important things for anyone to learn, as long as they also learn humility and successfully combine the two concepts. That's the part I think is really hard to figure out, depending on the person and where they are at in life. Eg. Someone who has been learning more humility and to "take oneself less seriously" could struggle with depression and self confidence. But adding in your advice, if one can actually apply it (not just understand it), then that person can likely live with internal peace. So how does one learn to not pay too much attention to the stuff that drags them down?

    • @chrisoher
      @chrisoher Před 4 lety +10

      @@TheSkystrider I commented earlier today and mentioned meditation. I'm not sure if you are aware of any kind of practice of meditation, but it teaches you to observe and acknowledge your thoughts. So, let's say during meditation session you encounter a negative thought. You observe it, acknowledge it, and just let it go. Watch as it comes and goes just as you would looking at clouds or cars passing by. You don't think too much into the clouds or the cars passing by. You let them show up, you acknowledge the thought, and let the thought go. Meditation has taught me not to react to my negative thoughts. It has taught me to live in the present moment and appreciate what is going on at the moment. So it helps to meditate. It let's you take a step back to observe and learn your thinking patterns and how to let go of the negative thoughts which eventually you learn how to let go of negative thinking patterns so that you can incorporate positive thinking patterns. Hope this helps!

      Maybe I'm misinterpreting your comment but it just sounds like you're asking to be disconnected from any sense of reality. It's easy to forget the things that drag you down but to a degree the thing that drags you down keeps you grounded to what's going on around you to a degree. Instead of ignoring some type of signs you see at least slightly looking into it allows for perspective? Do you HAVE to? No. But the more you take the path of only remembering "positive" the more you neglect everything you don't find positive. and what's positive to you could be negative to other people around you

    I once truly believed that I would unlock the mysteries of the universe only to find myself lost in an abyss beyond comprehension.
    I still find things along the way. I find things that nobody has ever told me before. Things that nobody would ever consider, yet are fundamentally sound.
    My latest finding was the chance of being. Titled "The Chance Of Being", I began questioning what are the chances of me being here now. My quest for an answer began small.
    My greatest and grandest parents had to have conceived their child at a specific and precise second. That child had to meet a specific person and also conceive a child at a certain time. A second earlier or later, I would not be, so I thought.
    Subjectively, new information has entered my mind that gives me reason to believe that I'm inevitable. The second law of thermodynamics. Energy can not be created or destroyed, but only transformed. Does that not define an eternal past and an eternal future?
    If the past and the future is eternal, if my duration is limited in any way, the chance of me being here now sits next to a literal infinity. This means that it's either impossible for me to be here now, or it's impossible for my duration to be limited. Yet, I'm here now.
    Are you with me?

As Alan Watts once said (paraphrased) "what's it like falling asleep and never waking up? Well that's death. And waking up without having ever fallen asleep is when you were born".. You should check him out, my dude. He's got so many amazing lectures

Like him, I could also go on for days speaking of the things that I've seen both physically and mentally. You might begin to assume that I'm a loon if I share my bizarre experiences.
      Imagine an ultimate origin, an absolute without a beginning or an ending. To say that what all has came from and is going to would be a digression, but to say that what all is would be more accurate.
      An _all,_ what would an _all_ want more than what the _all_ does not have? Perhaps the experience of a duration, a wonder, a question and many other things, lots of things from black to white, from a friend to a foe. Complexity and confusion, separation, a scattered _all_ for rhyme and reason.
      I will refrain from sharing the physical phenomena that I've experienced, as what I've seen comes from what is beyond me.

So when I tell one friend one thing and tell another friend something similar but a bit different, if they discuss it together they would probably think I made it up. Lovely! Also though, self-edited memories are often used to justify why we aren't good enough, or don't deserve something, or are the outsider. I'm glad you bring it up though, because noticing where these thoughts come from (usually nowhere real) is the beginning of getting out from under them. Hope you all edit nice memories for yourselves. Cheers!

    definitely sharing this with my psych professor. we had a chapter that talked about the false memory/misinformation effect and that association is what brought me to want to watch this video. also:
    this ended in such a wholesome way that my heart swelled :')

    i vividly remember stepping into an abandoned house that got burnt down and i remember it was down my street but instead when i went there like 2 years later it was just an empty lot, it was probably a dream. Then i went to an actual burnt down house in an adventure w my friends and it looked the same lmao, but i didnt remember the dream enough to see if it was the same exact house so it probably wasnt me predicting the future but whatever

    What a beautiful message, we're always told he have to believe in ouselves but eventhough you try it you cant fully believe in yourself bc there is nothing which makes u believe. This video gave the word a higher meaning, believing means really to be convinced by something, in this case by your skills due to maybe an experience, a compliment, an achievement etc

    My mom use to have seizures and she had brain surgery, luckily the seizures were totally gone... but she has replaced some memories with others that aren’t true at all, or they are very close to what they were but slightly different in some way. Sometimes after seizures she forgot who I was or who my dad was for a little bit, the brain is weird.

    I have a very strong memory of my own home -which does not exist yet. I oftentimes feel really homesick to that home i haven't built yet, but it's not imaginary house i am thinking, because when i have that image of my mind, i know every corner of my house -like a memory. So now i dedicate my works to built a future home from my memory, to finally come 'home'.
