  • It's now well known that car thieves can steal your car with a few hundred dollars worth of electronics. To stop them some people are buying Faraday boxes or shielding their keys in tin foil. On most new cars that use the smart key system there is another little known setting you can make to the car yourself to stop these type of thieves dead in their tracks without using anything but the car's own settings - Everyone that has a smart key equipped car should watch this video

    Car insurance agent here! This is a great tip for staying in a hotel, which is where most of my customers are when their car gets stolen overnight!!! One customer thought parking outside of his room window was enough to keep his car safe but it probably only helped their equipment more by being close to the fob!

    If you want to leave the passive system on but stop people from stealing the signal from your wireless remote, you can put it in battery depletion mode. This will turn the remote off. It was intended to save the remote's battery but it also prevents it from sending out a signal. No need for a faraday box or wrapping your key in tin foil. To take it out of battery depletion mode, just press any button on the remote.
    That said, your way is better because you don't have to remember to turn the remote off.
    Personally, I like the passive system. My dealer put in a third party engine disabler. If you don't turn off the engine disabler and attempt to drive the car (even with the proper remote) it won't run. I prefer this method because thieves can now program new remotes based on the VIN number of your car. In other words, they take a picture of your VIN, use that to program a new remote and steal your car. Your method will not stop this sort of attack.

    • @carquestions

    Also wrap your extra key FOB in aluminum foil three to four layer of foil when not in use. The foil will distrupt the key FOB's signal. You can test it out by wrapping your key FOB with aluminum foil and stand next to your car. NOTHING works! That's how you prevent thieves from reading your key FOB's signal.

    • @Shawn-ky2tw
      @Shawn-ky2tw Před 11 měsíci +13

      Actually, there is a much easier way. The manual will tell you how to disable the signal to save on FOB battery. For example, on my Lexus remote if you hold the lock key and press the unlock key twice in a row, you get the FOB light blinking 4 times to confirm that wireless signal is disabled. It will be reenabled once you hit any key on the FOB afterwards.

    • @refuztosay9454
      @refuztosay9454 Před 10 měsíci +9

      They sell Faraday bags for car fob/keys that solve this problem more elegantly than wrapping in aluminum foil - but the principle is the same - blocks the wireless signal.

      The higher the tech cars get the easier to steal. I beat them with old school. The relay attack is actually an old way. Now they use a can bus attack or usb computer attack. One technique works and defeats all of them. Lock the hood and use a remote battery relay. Without power it isn’t going anywhere. You can also lock your brakes. Basically they will need a tow truck

    On a 2016 IS300h to stop the key fob receiving radio signals(used for relay attack) simply hold the lock button down and press the unlock button twice. The red light on the fob will flash 4 times and it's done. As soon as you use the button on the key fob to unlock it the next time it reverts to keyless entry. The old style mechanical locks for the steering wheel or brake pedal are also very effective. If you think they're awkward to use, it's even more awkward to have your car stolen.
    You, or your mechanic, can also rig a cutout switch between the fuel pump power wire or in the ignition wire. Put the switch under the dash or somewhere else. Car won't run without fuel. You can also open the hood and remove the fuel pump relay from the fuse box -- car ain't goin' anywhere like that. Simple things that can save you a lot of grief.

    Easy fix get an RFID box to throw your key in. Or sleeve to keep it in. Theres a $25 push to start Kit with a hidden RFID KILL SWITCH. WORKS INCREDIBLE. You have to use one of the RFID Keychain tags it comes with and swipe it wherever you hide the receiver behind any interior panel and it'll beep to notify you the built in immobilizer is unlocked and able to start the vehicle. Bought it and installed it on my old tahoe that got stolen once and they messed up my ignition so using the key didn't matter you could start it without the key. I installed this bad boy super eazy to do as well. Forgot to tell the valet about it and after a half hour and 3 valets trying to get my vehicle started with no luck I had to go with them to start it up.

  • @justahumbledude
    @justahumbledude Před 25 dny

    Keep in mind this is only ONE attack vector. Good security means approaching it from many angles. Thieves can reprogram using the OBD2 port...there are locks for that. There is a new special type of wheel lock hat makes it much more difficult for removal and has a built in alarm....IGLA security system requires a special password in order for it to start and move the vehicle if you leave a started car and re-enter.
    I am actually keeping my key in a pouch and using Remote Connect to lock/unlock the vehicle, then using the keyfob next to start button for starting. No more smartkey entry but this feels more secure. This works even if the remote is in battery saving mode, which is interesting.

    For Toyotas and Lexus if you hold the lock button down on your key FOB and at the same time press the unlock button 2x's this puts your key FOB in battery saving mode. Now you can't open the door as a convenience. To unlock the door just press the unlock button. Do you know if this also hides your signal from your vehicle if you don't have "elec" key in settings?

    I have a question. What if you disable the passive key function and find out that the brake/push button doesn’t start your car? If you don't have that setting in your customizable settings, (my 2014 ES does not), there is an alternate method. Instead of stopping the car from looking for the FOB, stop the FOB from listening for the car. You do that by holding the lock button on the FOB and at the same time, press the UNLOCK button twice. The red light on the FOB should blink four times in slow spacing and the FOB is now turned OFF. Touching any button on the FOB will then turn it back on. Make sure you also have the second FOB (your partner's or spare) also turned OFF. This has the added advantage of saving the battery in the FOB. I use this system in public parking lots, airports, hotels, etc. (I also keep the spare FOB in a steel desk drawer).
