  • A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician shares the Best and Worst Used Lexus models to buy. Some of the Worst models will be a surprise to some!
    In this video we're continuing on Lexus-thon! at the Car Care Nut channel with the best and worst Lexus models to buy per your request and as promised in the previous video!
    We'll start off with the best middle aged Lexus models to buy. These are models that are out of the factory warranty that I would recommend even without an extended warranty.
    Then we'll move on to the oldies section where these are older models that are still reliable enough to drive a lot more miles.
    Then we'll move into the bad Lexus models. Folks this is the truth from experience. To some it will be hard to hear the car that they own be called bad and if you own of those models and it's been good I am very happy, glad and wish it continues to be good.

    01:32 🚗 The Lexus ES 350 is a highly recommended middle-aged model due to its reliability and value.
    02:27 🚙 When considering the Lexus RX 350, opt for models from 2010 and up to avoid power steering and radiator issues.
    04:02 🏎 The Lexus IS 350 and GS 350 are reliable cars with slightly higher maintenance costs compared to other Lexus models.
    05:24 🚚 The Lexus GX and LX are dependable trucks with high resale value, making them solid investments.

    I'm a Lexus Master Tech and completely agree with this video! You nailed it man. A couple of things I would add.
    The increased maintenance cost for GS/IS mainly comes from the way the cars eat tires. We have seen them need tires as early as 20k miles.
    Buying an LS430 now, you run the risk of oil leak issues. It's usually a couple thousand to fix the leaks. However once you do, they are bulletproof reliable.
    Avoid any Lexus with the 4.6L V8. That motor is hunk of garbage. About every 100k we see coolant leaks coming from the valley plate. It's a very labor intensive job, usually around the 2000 dollar range to fix.
    Ls460's go through front control arms every 100k. OEM arms are not cheap and if you think you can get around that by going aftermarket, they wear out 3x as fast.
    Not many people realize how reliable ISF's are. With consistent maintenance we have seen them reach over 300k miles. The 5.0L V8 is a solid motor

      Just bought a very very good condition 2010 GX 460 for my wife... really concerning to hear that about it's engine. Is that your only complaint about the engine? Is there any preventative maintenance to avoid it? Or maybe a quick way to check that it's not leaking to keep an eye on that specific problem?

    • @thomaspattison1397
      @thomaspattison1397 Před 2 měsíci +5

      @Presence_of_Mind_ It's much less common for the valley plate leaks to happen on GX460s. I'd say we see valley plate leaks 1 in every 200 trucks with 100k+ miles. The LS460s are more like 1 in every 50. When the leaks get severe, you can see pink going down the back side of the engine and on top of the transmission. We usually check in the shop by using a boroscope to look under the intake manifold. A good preventive measure would be to change the out the coolant

    As a current Lexus owner I can honestly say that I will NEVER buy a different brand ever again. I bought a very high mileage, but well taken care of, 1991 LS400 eleven years ago and I still drive it daily. I currently have close to 400,000 miles and going strong. That said, I am not a "Lexus can do no wrong" fanboy. I am very appreciative of the Car Care Nut for making these videos and helping us make better buying decisions. I am sure that when I am ready to buy a second car or replace my current car, I will use this list as a guide in order to avoid problems. Big thank you.

      I have been driving Lexus cars since the late 1990s starting with the LS400 up to what we now drive..2015 RX350. I think this is my 12th Lexus in last 25 plus years. I have bought certified and non certified Lexuses and several service loaners with nominal mileage on them like my current car which had 10K on it when i bought it. I can honestly say that in all those years the only problem i ever had with one what when the battery went dead on my original LS400...Im not lying!LOL> My current service loaner which i have owned since 2015 now has 88000 miles on it and I am itchy to get a newer NX300 to get upgraded technology. Unfortunately, Lexus pricing, both new and used, have skyrocketed since the pandemic so i am very reluctantly considering switching to another Toyota, or Nissan Rogue, or Hyundai Santa Fe, but i HATE to switch because of their reliability compared to Lexus. Now that my wife and i are older , retired and dont drive nearly so much as before, i really should buy a certified RX or NX, but dealers will try to STEAL my tradein which is in excellent shape, while charging ridiculous for the same used Lexuses they are trying to steal in trades on their new or slightly used cars. As much as we love the Lexus that wont be happening. Maybe i will sell my car privately and then buy a Lexus directly, but with only one car that wont be easy with limited inventory at Lexus dealers. I would never buy a Lexus from a non Lexus dealer because their cars are not certified.

    Personal testimony: We own a 2010 RX 350 2wd, bought it new in 2010, drive it daily, has 160k miles on it. This car is absolutely amazing, we’ve driven it cross country twice and drive from Fl. To Canada about every other year. We tow a 17’ boat with it too. We plan on keeping this car at least another 10 years, maybe even another 15 or 20.

    '05 LS430 owner here (after upgrading from many years of a '92 LS400). After nearly 3 years of ownership, I can certainly attest to the reliability of these tanks. Even being 16 years old, it has only ever required regular maintenance items to keep going and going. Almost all of these items are extremely simple to do if you have some basic tools around and a spot to work. Additionally, the Lexus forums are a wealth of information regarding questions, troubleshooting, and general support. I can't speak highly enough about my ownership experience and have tried to convince several people to get them as well. What really separates the LS430 for me though (on top of the reliability and simplicity of mechanical design), is the craftsmanship and quality of materials. The doors feel like a bank vault, all of the wood is real, and it's still one of the quietest and most effortless interiors I've ever been in. It's spoiled me in a sense, as I find myself critiquing cars that are newer and significantly more expensive that seem subpar when compared to my old Lexus. If you're in the market for the best bargain luxury sedan around, look no further than the LS430.

Never had anything to out except the original 13 year old alternator from factory. Regular maintenance is always on time and i’ve done other stuff like suspension, brakes and rotors all that. • @StealthFoxx_
      @StealthFoxx_ Před 3 měsíci

      @@pasidudissanayaka1843Imo, 140k miles is pretty damn low for a Lexus, and if it’s been well-maintained then that’s even better, but you should definitely find out when/if the transmission has been serviced if possible, and maybe see if there’s a maintenance log or Carfax report available. I’ve heard that it’s not uncommon for some IS250’s to have carbon buildup issues, and the car may feel a bit slow compared to the +100 HP the 350 adds, but overall they should definitely still be reliable cars and I can’t think of any other downsides aside from what was mentioned in this video (I’ve been doing a ton of research on Lexus cars myself since I’m considering getting a used one, but this is a bit of disclaimer since I’ve never actually owned a Lexus myself). Just my two cents, sorry for the wall of text and I hope this helped a bit

I bought a 4Runner brand new off the lot and when I went to trade in, the dealership paid MORE than the MSRP sticker price (which I didn’t even pay full MSRP due to incentives at the time of purchase)! Not all LS 460s have air suspension. Look for the height adjustment button on the center consul. Those are the cars with air suspension. Another big problem with the LS 460 are the control arms. In the earlier years 2007 through 2009 they weren’t that good and they often need replaced. OEM parts could cost as high as $8000 to replace all four. Actually there are eight. Another problem is the brake modulator. These often fail and are pretty expensive to replace. And also the water pumps sometimes will be suspect. So if you’re looking to buy one, check to see if those items have already been replaced. and if not, at least have them thoroughly inspected. And they are a fantastic car.

      I own a LS400 1993, Bought if for $4000.00 three years ago in California, one owner, pristine condition, and less than 80k miles. I was in the process of doing some things on it, pesky electronic things, headliner came down in front, leather in front needs a bit of help, but overall mechanical condition is good with the exception of the speedometer doesn't always work. I then had a few days of feeling poorly and spent them online looking at used Lexus. I bought, on impulse , a LS460L in Florida, one owner, corporate CEO owned. Thank goodness it does not have the air suspension after listening to these videos, however, even at less than 60K on it, already have had issues with brakes, not THE BIG issue, but still some things had to be replace to get the brake warnings off. It is a gorgeous car but I wish I had taken the 17K I used to buy it and instead sent my LS400 to have EVERY single thing fixed including the interior leather front seats only, and all the pesky electronic goodies that aren't working anymore like the up/down antenna , the radio which is on and off, same with the speedometer, a few paint issues hardly noticeable. I could have completely restored the LS400 and had money leftover instead of buying the LS460L, I am going to try and sell the 460 ASAP before I loose too much on it. If someone who has more cash to burn than me buys it, it will still be a great car, but for me not so much.

    1. ECU was throwing up knock sensor codes but it was the ECU itself that needed replacing.
    2. The original alternator died on me yesterday so that is getting replaced.
    I did have to replace a servo for the hvac system and actuators for 3 of the doors, 3rd party parts were super cheap and they have held up 5 years so far.
    Other than that, just fluids and brakes. Never driven a better car in the snow and it does surprising well on the sand and trails too.

    In September I bought a 2004 rx330 and I can confidently say it is one of the best cars I’ve ever owned, the awd system paired with snow tires preforms incredibly in the snow and I’ve never felt safer in a car. I’m 6’6” and I have plenty of room in it and so do the people in the back thanks to the sliding and reclining rear seats. I previously had a 2002 4runner which was an unbelievable car offroad and in the snow but the fuel mileage compared to my RX was horrendous. I’ve also owned 2 gs300s in the past year, one of them a 1998 and the other a 2000, and those are also high on my list of cars I’d recommend to anyone looking for a cheap and reliable commuting car or first car. Tons of leg room in them as well. They get high 20’s for mpg and they ride amazing, both had over 250k on them and you would’ve thought they were brand new with how well they ran and they can take a beating. I only got rid of them because I moved down to college and didn’t need to have 3 Lexus’s😂. And as far as maintenance and parts for the rx330 they are dirt cheap especially compared to some of the German competitors from the same years. A full set of ball joints for my car is around $200 and my friend is looking at around $1,200 for ball joints for his Audi. The only complaint I have about my RX is the squeaky dash when it gets cold out, other than that I have nothing bad to say about the vehicle

    I have put a few thousand into a 2008 GX470 that was bought used at the beginning of the pandemic. Under $10,000 and 140,000 miles. Tacoma's 4Runners and FJ's cost more than the Lexus used??? Doing the maintenance so its good for for about another 100.000 miles . Have a plan for a spring conversion when the air springs fail, So far the system works great. It is a 17mpg SUV and 89 octane runs fine in it. This GX470 runs better than domestic cars with 1/2 the miles. I am 58 and this is my 1st Toyota. I only bought it to save miles on my perfect 2009 F150 XLT Supercrew. Which is to good to get rid of.

    I have a 2009 Avalon and 2005 ES330 both in the low 80,000 mile range. The last I checked the ES is worth the same money as the Avalon. The 3.3 in the ES is quieter than the 3.5 in the Avalon. However I like the fact that the 3.5 has a timing chain whereas the 3.3 has a belt. The Avalon get amazing fuel economy but the cabin is rather noisy. The ES is a great car to take on trips. It uses a bit more fuel but is so comfortable.

    Greetings AMD, just bought '04 ES 330 with 68K, with no rust and am thrilled with it. My sister ('04 LS 430) and son ('11 ES 350) convinced my better half to look for a Lexus and fortunately after many months and test drives we found this gem. Many thanks for your expertise/videos. I'll do basic DIY maintenance but will leave the deep dives to our dealership mechanics. Besides your channel (1st on my list) any other Lexus forums/channels that you'd recommend?

    On my GX460 I replaced all 4 brake calipers, rotors and pads for $900 in parts. Was quoted $3500 with inferior parts. Couple YT vids and a weekend of drinking and wrenching it was properly done. With CZcams and the internet in general, every man with a decent set of tools can do most repairs themselves and save big.

      On my 2005 4Runner Limited, I did the 5th gen brake upgrade using painted 5th gen Power Stop rotors, painted rotors, and Akebono pads in the front. For the rear, I used 4th gen painted Power Stop calipers, painted rotors, and ceramic pads. The brakes are much better now.
      Ideally, I should have used 5th gen Power Stop calipers in the rear, with 4th gen rotors and 4th gen semi-metallic pads in the rear.

    Lexus quality peaked to its highest in the early 2000's. The 2004 Lexus ES is one of the most reliable cars ever to come off an assembly line. I have a 2005 Camry with over 350,000 kms. I bought it used and it runs amazing. Almost 19 years old. Solid. Toronto Canada.

    11:11 I had IS250 and if this car is one of worst in Lexus family say no more :) what great cars need to be other models?
    I was using this car for 5 years and this was very reliable car. When I was selling car it was 13 years old and had no leaks, rust or any other problems. All technical inspections was passing in Germany without any comments and technician was always surprised how well car was aging. Seems like I was lucky as my car was not requiring any oil between changes till last day in my hands (approx 100.000 miles).
    This is why I have hanged IS250 for IS300h. Those cars are amazing.

      This guy really over exaggerated the problems that IS250s could have, it is very uncommon even here in America with our garbage gasoline. Most IS250s will be perfectly reliable, much more common than not. They’re usually just as reliable as all the other models, talking from personal experience with multiple different IS

    I own a GS 300 and it has been the best used car I ever had, both in comfort and reliability. Yes it has the GDI engine and it will some day fail. What I do to prolong the problem is to use injection cleaner every 1000 miles and only use gasoline with at least 5% ethanol. From summer 2021 our 95 gasoline in Sweden contains 10% ethanol by default. I sometimes fill up with extra ethanol up to 15% of a full tank and the car is not complaining. So far the car has about 80 000 miles and running great. Thank you for all the great information about the models. =)

    I purchased my 007 IS350 Base model in 2017 with 100K. I've been very matictuoius on replacing normal ware and tare items with OEM parts as well as changing ALL the fluids regularly. My Dashboard and doors panels have been replaced free by Lexus. I replaced the radio head with a Phoenix automotive PX6 10.2 Tesla style and absolutely love it! My taillights are now Spec-D taillights and Depo headlights. My exhaust system is a INVIDIA complete system. I'm Rolling on Vossen C2V 20 inch wheels MPS4S tires with BC coilovers. Ive added Megan Racing sway bars super pro adjustable endlinks and Figs polly LCA bushings. Adjustable SPC ball joints and rear adjustable control arms. I absolutely love this car! It now has 158k with no issues! Mooresville NC USA

    Owned a 2007 LS 460 and I loved this car. I took it to 225000 km and essentially all I had to do was your usual maintenance. Water pump, rear struts, brakes. The car was easy to work on and would agree the brakes were not great on the car as I did have pulsation issues with it. Mine had the rear struts and was not expensive to fix, even though my car had the rear reclining seats it still was not terrible job to do. I would always get under 8 litres per 100 or 31 MPG (Imp Gal) on the highway. I live in Canada and with good winter tires traction was not an issue as long as you had good winter tires. I would not agree with his assessment except the brakes were a little disappointing and you had to use premium fuel. This car was a dream and would buy one again.

    • @zaker600
      @zaker600 Před 2 lety +4

      My LS460 is still going strong. The only thing which I expect to go soon is the control arms bushings and the air suspension. My only real complaint is the door trim paint starting to peel and Lexus’s decision to use a bad quality interior sticky dash plastic. I also agree with the brakes not being the best even though the technology is superior. Otherwise the car is an absolute tank and in Australia we only got the fully optioned models and ai love radar cruise control and the auto side and rear blinds. It’s gonna be hard to upgrade from this car because it’s almost perfect.

    Have a 1997 Lexus LS 400 coach edition,with 73,000 miles. Bought it new in 97 . Looks and drives like the day I drove it home. It’s not my daily driver. I put 600miles on it last year. My wife says we only take it out of garage for weddings and funerals. I’m 65 years young and when I drive the car I always run it up to 120-130 mph before I put it back in garage. Great car. Will be passing it on to my son.
