Yeah, spending a lot of money and the inconvenience of it will change your priorities. I'm a car nut myself, I own 2 cars, one is a Toyota, that car is my daily where my Infiniti is my project car, also semi-reliable.
this is too true. as exciting and fun as cars are growing up dreaming of bmws and benzes, after owning one or two and anticipating every couple of months spending thousands of dollars and living in fear not knowing what the next light is gonna be on, it is not worth it as an older person. You have too much going on to be worried and spending on cars. buy once, cry once.
German cars (except Porsche) are exciting to drive but After 5 years old and/or 50k + miles they will bankrupt you. My 2002 Lexus ES300 maybe “boring” to most people but at 176k miles it’s as reliable as anything on the road today. I replaced all 20 year old OEM parts (starter, alternator and struts) and now it rides like new. It will last me another 176k miles with proper maintenance !!

@@TheCarCareNut Excellent video as always. I really enjoy these types of videos and your experience based opinions. With that said, maybe you can help clarify something. You stated the 10-14 4runner and fj 4.0 engine being bulletproof. However, the 10-15 Tacoma engine is susceptible to head gaskets and oil leaks. Aren’t these engines identical? I can’t imagine Toyota putting slightly different versions of these engines in essentially the same chassis during the same years. I appreciate your feedback and keep up the great work!

Congrats on the first year anniversary of your shop! Thank you for videos like this, it does help to get your perspective. Have 186k miles on 2003 vibe with very few issues over the last 9 years. Have 2012 and 2014 Prii with 101k and 65k miles respectively with zero issues other than some recalls. Love Toyota quality!
Im blessed to have found your videos when you were working at a Toyota dealership. We own a 2009 “Pebble Beach” edition RX 350, with the 2GR FE engine. It has just turned 175,K miles. With no issues or major repairs, just the routine maintenance. We absolutely love this SUV! The maneuverability, comfortable seating and quietness of the road is very impressive for those early years.
I have a suspicion that some increased neglect for the late 2000s year models was because of the recession, most people were probably trying to spend their money elsewhere.
Thank you, AMD! Love the channel and your desire to take care of the customer. Appreciate that you highlight the importance of maintenance and 5K or less, oil changes
we just got a 2015 RX 350 with 116,000 miles on it, thanks to you and Scotty we knew what to look for and look out for, super happy with our purchase and look forward to putting 200k miles on it! thanks to you and ALL the youtube mechanics
Congratulations brother. Thanks to your videos, I’ve been able to apply so much knowledge to my job. I’m a 3rd year apprentice Toyota technician. I’ve learnt so much through you and am loving the job. All the best for you and your family in the future good sir.
Can’t believe it’s already been a year since you opened the new shop, time dure flies! Many thanks to you Sir for taking the the time to show the public the things dealers would never disclose. Thank you for saving us time and money!
Another very informative video that's why I always watch it from start to finish. I work as an auction vehicle inspector and these information helped me on what to watch out for when inspecting on Toyota vehicles. Keep up the great job AMD...you're truly a big impact in the Toyota community 👍
Always very informative as usual. Live in the rust belt, literally 3 blocks due NE of your shop & here has been my Toyota/Lexus experience. Had an 07 ES350, did the routine maintenance, kept it clean & never had issues. Only saw the dealer for recalls, otherwise everything was performed in my garage. Kept it for 12 years. Presently have a 17 RX350 & 18 GS350; to date both are performing similar to ES. Have been performing the maintenance, keep them clean (top & bottom) & thanks to your videos, look out for many pointed out items. Most definitely concur with early Rav4 issues. Owned a 06 & never had one with so many factory recalls & mechanical failures. Had the V6 model & taking care of it didn't matter; had an early water pump bearing failure, muffler rusted through at the top in 4 yrs (integral w/ the cat convertor & covered by the exhaust warranty), rear diff coupler failed (just before the special diff warranty expired), had a rear coil spring break, and many more I can't remember.
I had an ‘06 Corolla for many years, secondhand and brought over from Puerto Rico of all places. It stayed in the family as a spare car, and other than a minor problem with exhaust system noise and a loose shifter linkage it’s run really well. It has 195k miles on it now and still sees some use from time to time.
Congratulations on your anniversary!! I just want to say I am so grateful for everything you put out! I have learned so much from you. May God continue to bless you!
I actually have a 2007 RAV4 V6 sport that was passed down to me from my dad and he’s the original owner for it. He has been doing full synthetic oil changes on it every 4000 miles and still runs like a dream has 191,000 miles on it. I’m hoping to get 300 K out of it.
So useful. Thank you. As an on-and-off Toyota owner for more than 40 years, almost everything you said rang true to me. The only exception was the the Lexus RX... our 2018 developed a shocking list of issues in less than two years. I'd literally never had to 'repair' a Toyota product before. I ended up throwing myself on the mercy of the local Toyota dealer and going back to a 4Runner.
Love this channel. I wish AMD would make a video to offer advice on how to find a trustworthy mechanic like him. I always cringe taking my car in for service and having to endure the relentless upsells. I do feel more confident now after listening to this channel. Keep up the great work. His channel truly is a community service.
I had no problems finding a good one, just by reading the reviews on Yelp, especially the negative ones. You have to filter out the guys who are just cranky, but any systemic problem comes out. As a result, I have a mechanic who advises against things I think the car might need. "Wait for it to get worse, there's no point spending the money just yet." Or "This car is a goner. Don't put any more money into it, apart from oil changes."
I had a 2006 IS350, for 12 years, then handed to my daughter, drove it for 3 years in high school. Bullet proof. Regular maintenance only. Alternator and starter were the major issues with it. Sold it with 182k miles.
I just bought a 2005 Lexus GX470 in ok condition and and that suffered from bad previous owner and mechanic. I am planning on restoring it to mint condition following this wonderful channel. Today I changed the spark plugs and Factory Toyota oil 👍🏽 Thanks for the great info
I really appreciate your videos, especially the video on your recommended maintenance. I took notes on that one and now know exactly what maintenance to do and when to do it to keep my 2019 Avalon V6 in good shape. I love that car. Thanks.
Great video AMD! My 98 LS has been my most expensive to maintain but I also have an 02 and an 04. I daily the 02 with pleasure and use the others as weekend/vacation cruisers. Enjoy your weekend brother!
I used to own a 1997 4runner (before it was totaled by an idiot turning in front of me) with 497k miles at the time of the accident. It had very few issues. Regular oil changes and other servicing for life-limited parts when they are due can make those trucks last forever.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I understand. My uncle had a 95 GS300 Lexus with over 300K on it and it ran like a smooth clock. Someone ran the traffic light and t-bone that Lexus and the insurance total it out. That happen in 2003 and 20 years later he still talks about that Lexus.
my dad just got t-boned on his 4runner. The front end is damaged near the wheel well, my brother who's a mechanic says its possible to fix, but the family says it's better to buy another one. Here I am looking for a good used one for them. They do not understand, people don't often sale good used ones. And if they are, they are 2/3 the price of a new one. Rich people giving poor people purchasing advice.
@@FrenchMann-jb2qk I had a 1995 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed manual with the famous 22R Engine. The truck ran like smooth sewing machine. Rust was a huge issue!!!
So glad I've had the privilege of watching your channel and all of your Lexus content. Can't wait to find that perfect price on a 2013 ES350 with around 100k miles... Balling on a budget!
I bought a 2017 RAV4 Limited based on your earlier reviews, and you are definitely on the mark. The only time I had a concern outside of regular maintenance which triggered the check engine indicator was that i had to replace the fuel cap, which is cheaper that what usually appears with other makes and models that usually show up at this low mileage. Close to 80,000 miles now, and still going strong! Thanks for all you do, much appreciated!
@@colorphonedan We have a '18 SE and it's been solid. No issues other than regular maintenance. The head unit sucks though and it is loud on the highway.
I have owned my RX450h (hybrid version of the RX350) for 5 years and has been very reliable. However, this year I experienced an issue that, it turns out, is quite common. The front suspension top mount bearing failed. Lexus dealer quoted c. £2,000 for the repair! Unlike other manufacturers, Lexus don't list the top mount as a spare part and, instead want to sell you the complete strut assembly! Fortunately I found a local mechanic who will remove the leg, separate the top mount, then passes it to an engineering neighbour to remove and replace the bearing. They then reassemble the suspension. Total cost £270! If you aren't local, the engineer offers a same day turnround postal service if you send him the top mount. Cost just £75.
I have a 2015 Rav 4 with 235,000 miles, decently maintained but driven hard. First 100,000 miles was all chicago city miles with Uber, the rest of the miles are 1000 per week highway delivery driver job in Oklahoma. Car is still running great but I am burning a ton of oil. Recently tuned up all the cheap stuff like spark plugs, coolant exchange, but that’s not stopping the problem. I think I’m gonna have to go in for an engine rebuild because I love this car so much it’s a beast. Your videos have been a big help guiding me through maintaining this car late into its life.

I bought a 14 LS 460 F Sport (cue the tar and feathers from AMD) last July that the Carfax had shown a steady history of being serviced on time. I knew going in that brakes and tires would wear faster and be more. Got it with 119k miles and had all the fluids done soon after as the they would be due. So far with the about 8000 miles I've put on it it's been great. Comfy, all the features and I'm getting about 18-19 mpg in town which really isn't awful for it's size and power.
I love this Man! He is so informative and helpful about purchasing a new or used Lexus/Toyota. I’m watching every video available before making my purchase this month.

It would be totally impractical with lift and mud tires on it, except I live in rural area and overland with it in the Patagonia. I bought it from my brother that lived in a city when it had 25,000 miles on it, so basically it only got driven to Toyota for sevice and weakened trips. No rust issues where I live. Great video, AMD! I feel like this is something that's generally only known by enthusiasts and those in the industry (I'm grateful for having worked in dealers quite a bit myself). One vehicle I'm surprised you didn't mention, and am curious on your thoughts - Lexus HS. Don't they experience a lot of the oil burning issues due to the old piston ring design, as well? Very unusual/rare car, but a watch out for buyers, I think. Side note, as well - congratulations on the one year shop anniversary! I hope things continue onward and upward for you!

Hello Sir, Always a pleasure to watch your videos. I am a very happy owner of a Lexus IS300h. I own it since new and i'm extremeley careful about the maintenance. I drove 126.000 kms of joy with it. I don't want to get rid of it.
I just bought a 2016 rav4 with 175,000 after researching and finding their high reliability. I had a compression test done before buying. All cylinders were 171-173 psi. Not the best but still well within normal range. It hasn’t burned any oil after around 900 miles. I paid 10,700 for it. Book value is 13k-15k. It does have scratches but almost no dings or dents and no rust on vital components. Zero leaks! Thanks for your knowledge AMD!
$10,000 for a vehicle that's 7 years old with almost 200K on it. Just doesn't seem right. Years ago, a car like that would be lucky to see a $5000 asking price.
@@milfordcivic6755 oh I agree. It’s ridiculous. I would have much rather paid 5k. Is what it is though and it isn’t getting any cheaper. I could have easily gotten a kia, Nissan, Chevy etc etc for thousands less but I’m paying for reliability.
Same here. Just bought a 2015 Rav with 158k paid $13k for it but it was a 1 owner lady owned and meticulously maintained. Runs and drives like it has 15,000 miles on it. It still looks brand new. My Wife took it on a 6 hour round trip and said she would never know that it had that many miles on it. Toyotas command higher prices because their reliability has been proven. No car is perfect but I trust Toyotas and Hondas for that matter and when taken care of and maintained they last. Also have a Camry with 230,000 on it and this thing runs like a sewing machine.
@@DBMD7 Modern cars, especially Toyotas, are designed more like airplanes thus will last a very long time. In the 1970s cars had a hard time lasting over 75k miles. Now they go over 300k miles with ease.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q the irony is that 70's cars could have lasted a lot longer but most owners thought maintenance was an option.Too many of those cars never got an oil change. Thank you for producing this video. I would like to find one of these gems, however I may not outlive my 2006 base Highlander. I have taken care of it and done some real tune-up items and it runs, drives, and keeps going as if it is new.
I just bought a 2004 highlander limited with 39k miles from an older senior citizen who was the original owner. It's like going back in time. I'm one of those proud owners of a 2010 Prius. All recalls fixed. Inverter repaired under warranty at one point. NO other issues. Two previous owners. Perfect maintenance records and 5000 mile oil change intervals. Battery fan cleaned annually. 103K miles, 50K of which are mine. I will put a new HV battery in it when needed, and keep it, as it is paid for and runs flawlessly. I agree, though, that this and the 2011 are to be approached with caution. We also have a 2009 Prius with over 200,000 miles, running on original battery. Our other 2009 Prius was wrecked by a drunk in an F150, or it would have over 200K on it, also. Those second gen Prii are amazing.
Thank you Sir for this valuable information. I've been watching your channel for quite a few months and your film about the Land Cruiser sold me... I worked for a small gm dealer for 15 years. This is basically where I was introduced to "toyota" or the pontiac vibe. All of us techs dealing with GM's, horrendous problems always.. we would say hey "The pontiac vibes" only need brakes, oil changes, and basics. We never saw one engine, transmission, or drivetrain issue. After owning a jeep 😢 i said thats it. I'm buying a Tacoma. Here I am 12 years later, original drivetrain..I plow with it, pulled campers, off road. You name it. It's still such a great truck. Never skips a beat. I would say I'm definitely a car care nut about it.
The service manager of a rural dealership that sold almost every GM brand told me the warranty claims on the Vibe were 20% of the GM average. In my mind that makes it 5 times as good as a GM car built by GM. My Vibe has served me for 18 years with just 3 non-scheduled repairs. We also have a Tacoma in the family which was built in the same plant. I am still ticked off that GM and Toyota closed the joint venture factory that built our vehicles.
Wanted to say thanks, and subscribed because of your insight into Toyota vehicles. You really helped seal the deal about me looking for a Highlander Hybrid.

Hi Amd, are you able to do a video on how to tell what the state is of a hybrid battery, whether it’s nearing the end of its useable service life. Especially when you looking to buy a used one. I would imagine owners will notice as the battery ages it wouldn’t propel the car as much, and as a result the engine runs more. Could the scan tool tell you information on how much the battery is propelling the car to gauge what the condition of the battery is and thus have an ideal how much service life is left. This is a topic and I’m sure many would too see a video on.

Have 2012 and 2014 Prii with 101k and 65k miles respectively with zero issues other than some recalls. Love Toyota quality!
I LOVE this channel! To hear a professional’s opinion on specific years and models is worth it’s weight in Gold!
Because dealers don't even know sh!! 😆
That year flew on by
Another very informative video that's why I always watch it from start to finish.
Congratulations on the one year anniversary! Your the Toyota Guru! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us on utube,
Congratulations on your anniversary!!
Congratulations on your first year with your new shop! Thanks for sharing so much information with us.
Congrats to you and Mrs. Car Care Nut. That year flew by!
So useful.
Happy 1-year Anniversary! 🎉
I'm glad you've been so successful owning your own shop. 🙂
Scarce as hen's teeth nowadays.
90s Toyotas and most cars are not a problem. The issue with Toyota is Tacomas and rust. They kept screwing up the rust proof for 3 generations!
@@FrenchMann-jb2qk I had a 1995 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed manual with the famous 22R Engine. The truck ran like smooth sewing machine. Rust was a huge issue!!!
I had a 1984 Supra that suffered the same end at 205,000. Who knows how many miles it might have reached.
So glad I've had the privilege of watching your channel and all of your Lexus content. Can't wait to find that perfect price on a 2013 ES350 with around 100k miles...
Balling on a budget!
Scotty and this amigo they are the best teachers, excellent video . We need to preserve him
I bought a 2017 RAV4 Limited based on your earlier reviews, and you are definitely on the mark.
I have a 2018 XLE with 66K miles that I hope to be driving for at least a decade. That thing never has any problems, I love it
@@colorphonedan We have a '18 SE and it's been solid.
Congratulations on one year anniversary of your shop!! 🎉
Can you make a video comparing different rust proofing options and what you would recommend?
Hello AMD. Your knowledge of Toyota vehicles is truly amazing. The kind advice you give for buying and maintaining toyota vehicles is not available anywhere else. That makes you unique. I wish you success in your garage as well as your videos. May God bless you.
I’ve got a 2004 Lexus RX330 with over 250K miles. Engine still runs like new and overall the car is in excellent shape. Hoping it goes for at least another 100K miles. Regular maintenance is always vital.
Another 250K at least....Change the timing belt and engine oil on time and watch.
@@luckyyu2004
The timing belt that’s in there now has 75K on it. Should I change it at 100 K?

My brother I love your honesty God Bless you and your family it’s so refreshing to see an honest repair shop I’m in New Jersey one day I will pass thru your area and stop in 👍 God willing
I have a 2010 FJ which has always resided in Arizona so no rust issues. Still rides and runs like it's brand new - love it!
they re classic. what is it that people love about them?
Thank you for updating the list since the the last one you did which I bought my 2013 RX350 based on it and you are right. So thank you again.
Thank you for sharing your experience, your honesty, and the effort you put into your videos. I really appreciate what you do. Your channel is one of the best. I am a mobil mechanic in the South Florida area, and I admire you, Sir.
Congratulations for your shop anniversary & Thanks for the awesome content. One of the best channels is this and Scotty !
Could you please also do a review on Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2023 if possible 🙏🏻
I just cannot say by words how great you are! Your honesty and originality have made the people more comfortable and aware while looking at different cars. May the Lord bless you and keep you safe.
Thanks for the informative video. I bought a 2012 Rav4 used from a local dealership and I now know why the previous owner traded it in. Trying to fix their problems now.
My 1996 4-Runner (manuel) has 478K miles. If I could afford to send it to this man for a mechanical "makeover" so it could make it to a million miles, I would. To us Toyota/Lexus lovers, this is one of the best CZcams channels there is.
Always love watching these and then reading the comments lol.. Appreciate your knowledge and all that you do for the toyota/lexus owners and happy to say I own a few if the gems you spoke of. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience
You are an honesty Rock Star. The right man at the right time. Hard to imagine how you can improve what you are doing but I am sure you will. I have a 2021 Tundra and it’s the only thing I have faith in life in these times.
Congrats on one year. Wishing many more. My 22 Tacoma is fun and exciting. Maybe another video on what we need to do to keep this gen running reliably.
Informative video as always! Car Care Nut you have become my favorite automotive channel by far
Congratulations on your one year anniversary 🎉 this channel is a gem 💎
I have a 2005 4Runner. 311,000 miles 4.7 V8. Bulletproof reliability. No oil burning and no leaks
Love your presentations. Good teacher. Keep them coming Rickie from down under Astralia
I love this Man! He is so informative and helpful about purchasing a new or used Lexus/Toyota. I’m watching every video available before making my purchase this month.
I currently own
2023 Lexus NX 350
2016 Tundra Platinum 50k miles
2014 Lexus IS 250 F Sport 81k miles
2011 Camry 4cyl 64k miles

How long did you have to wait for your NX? Were you able to find a deal? I need to replace an '02 GS 300.

I got a 2010 FJ cruiser. Just maintenance on it so far, and hitting 60,000 miles. Absolutely love it. Totally planning to keep it for the rest of my life. owners regularly get 500,000+ miles on them, which probably more than I will put on it in my lifetime.
I hope it isn't too late to pair it up with a 2 door Prado. 😁
Congratulations on owning your shop U always provide GR8 advice, thanks so much.
Congratulations on your shops 1 year anniversary! Nothing harder than starting a business in these times.
Congrats to TCCN on 1 year anniversary of shop! God bless!! Best wishes for many years of success!!

Thanks for sharing this video, always learn good advice from the Car Care Nut!
In another video he said - stay away from the HS!
Thanks for the updated video AMD. I just got a 2004 Solara with 225k miles on board. Seems solid to me.
Happy for you brother 🙏🏻 got your own shop and all now 🔥🔥🔥
love your channel man i have a 2012 Toyota Highlander its done 170,000 an i change the oil every 5,000 runs like a dream like you say, oil is cheap, engines are expensive so maintaining it is a must, congrats on your 1 year anniversary

Wow so accurate! Our old 2008 Corolla has been the most problem-free car we’ve ever had! (Closing in on 200,000 now) Our former son-in-law has her but I still maintain it for him.
Yes! Thank you for finally mentioning the NX200t In one of your videos. I have been religious about the oil changes in my 2015 model ever since I saw your Camry oil consumption video. Thank you for this valuable knowledge!

What a wealth of useful, actionable information for buying a quality Toyota/Lexus. You've outdone yourself this time.
Thanks and congratulations on your shop's one year anniversary!
You have a great honest, service-oriented approach to car care. Your customers are all very fortunate to have found you.
Thanks for the video as always, AMD. Next video like this, can you keep the car models/years info up throughout the entire duration you're talking on them? I look away sometimes and always find myself having to rewind and find out when it would helpful to have the data still on-screen. Cheers!!
The engines & transmissions in full size cars were bulletproof and if it wasn't for the simplistic design of those drivetrains they would have never lasted as long as they did.
Its so far been the cleanest and newest looking car I've ever had. I plan on keeping it forever. I prefer older model toyotas that have proven themselves over time. I've always changed my oil at 3k miles because I don't drive alot of miles even after the 3 months interval. I hope you enjoy your highlander. I smile everytime I see one of the first gen models on the road.❤
Another awesome show . You are so helpful and knowledgeable. Very surprised that you never recommended the Sequoia as I own a 2003 Bullitproof.
Besides the value of the content you present, I sincerely enjoy listening no matter what specific topic is being presented. Thank you AMD! Have yourself a wonderful day!
Although I ended up getting a LX570 since it seems that there are very few LCs for sale and the ones available as Scotty Kilmer says They are not giving them away. Nevertheless I'm really happy with my purchase.
I just like how organise you shop is , indeed it inspires
🙏 OMG! This Car Care Nut channel deserves a Gold Medal 🏆🥇 for being so honest & detailed in advicing customers on the Con & Pro of owning a Toyota or a Lexus! We are now a little bit more knowledgeable of choosing a car based on its engine block & transmission type & year & where they're being manufactured , instead of just based on the brand or model! Like SONY's audio products are much better now since SONY is relocating many of their China based assembly plants to other countries with better IP Protecting Enforcement , Craftmanship & Supply Chain reliability , & we think the same goes with Toyota & Lexus' vehicles! 🙏 Thank You So Much Car Care Nut channel for the honest tutorial! 🌷🌿🌍💜🕊🇺🇸🇯🇵

Congrats on the 1 year of your shop - my 2002 4Runner is a tank, hope my new 2023 Rav4 will be as good, but I don't see how that will even be possible. God Bless!
Congrats I’ve owned my Jeep grand Cherokee for 12 yrs and my Toyota sienna was a POS it really depends on year I guess

274,000 on my 2010, 4 cyl, Rav4 Limited. It does burn some oil now, about 1 qt every 1000 -1200 miles. Oil change every 5,000 miles from the beginning. The insurance tried to total it after a recent hail storm. I still kept it. The goal is 500,000. Maybe there is a short block in my future..

Love your channel. I wanted to buy a new Toyota Corolla but the dealers had none for sale. Also, Most Toyota dealers are still adding mark ups. I ended up going with a 2023 Honda Civic Sport. Got a fair deal with no mark up. I really wanted a Corolla but not playing the dealer games. Thumbs up on this video.
Should've just went mazda , toyota over rated and you would've had more issue with the cvt trash they put in it and I hope that new civic doesn't have a cvt either , that bland 2015 interior is already sad 😂
Feeling a little better about pulling the trigger on a 21 Prius. It’s definitely weird looking but hoping to keep it till my son can drive it (he’s a month old). As a Honda guy I appreciate the wealth of Toyota knowledge I’m leaning from this channel, keep it up!
This video is so impressive because it contains so much information, must take a lot time to prepare this video, top quality video, perfect Toyota use car buying guide, how the world can you remember all this even you worked for dealership ! My goodness!
