How to Pick a Lock (Basics) 🔓

  • This video explores the mechanics of pin-tumbler locks and demonstrates the process of opening them using lockpicks. It is a fairly basic view of lock picking, but I wanted to make it comprehensive to give people a good idea of the concepts. It also establishes a base for beginners in lock picking, helping them better understand how a lock functions and how one can exploit it. The pin-tumbler is a ubiquitous lock mechanism that uses pins of varying lengths to prevent the lock from opening without the correct key. Most locks around the home or office are simple pin-and-tumbler and can be relatively easy to open using a pick and a tension wrench.

While the process is simple and can be mastered with practice, picking such a lock requires great patience. It can be a hobby as well as a practical skill. Locksmiths define lock-picking as manipulating a lock's components to open a lock without a key. To understand lock picking, you must first know how locks and keys work. Most locks rely on somewhat similar concepts, but they vary widely in shape and size, featuring numerous design variations. As this is to cover the basics, I don't review security pins or more advanced techniques. This video is for educational purposes only.

Locksmiths employ the art of lockpicking to unlock a lock by analyzing and manipulating the components of the lock device without the original key. Additionally, proficient lock pickers should avoid causing damage to the lock itself, enabling them to rekey it for subsequent use. This is particularly crucial when dealing with antique locks that would be irreplaceable if one employed destructive entry methods. Although some may associate lock picking with criminal intent, locksmiths consider it an essential skill. Law-abiding citizens often pursue it as a valuable learning skill or a hobby. The transition to using combination locks for high-security items like safes aimed to eliminate the keyhole, which experts recognize as the weakest component of the lock.

    Great Vidoes. Keep them coming.
You don't have to be a criminal to appreciate the art of lock picking. It is a potentially life saving survival skill. Imagine you are in a burning building and a lock was what was between you and escape. Lock picking was a standard skill of the historical ninja. Just like with martial arts it depends on the intentions of the user whether the knowledge is good or evil. Heroes like James Bond and MacGuyer have been shown to use lock picking to save theirs or some else's lives. Just because one wants to learn this skill doe not make them a criminal any more that one learning martial arts means they go around beating people up. Most people have never been in a fight, but would like to know how to defend themselves if they had no other option.

It's worth pointing out you need the slimmest tension wrench you can get away with.
(The width that fits the keyway, usually something like 5mm)
Just 1mm or 2mm often means the difference between picking a lock or failing.
You need that fraction more to give the pick more manouvreability.
If your picks are getting stuck and jamming either the pick or the tension wrench is too big and need filing or sanding down and you have no chance at all of picking a lock.

I got my interest in lockpicking because I was bored and had two padlocks in front of me that were locked and the keys were long gone,so I tried to open one with a very unorthodox technique, without any picking tools, just a slice of metal from a 7UP and a a pair of scisors, and when it opened it felt so good that I got hooked!!
The second one I picked it with a bit of luck and some imagination,I didn't know what the tensioner was for and I didn't have one ofc,so I picked it with a piece of metal the size of a paper clip, apparently what I done was a bypass pick,it took me at least a couple of hours but it payed up,now I'm really into it,and I'm trying to make my own picks!! :) It is an excellent hobby!!

For the 3rd method... can you attach your lock-pick to some sort of push-pull that vibrates ? - essentially, you will have a gadget that actuates your lock -pick back and forth, - the same you do with your hand. A turning wrench can be a part of the gadget. The gadget can be battery-powered. You insert it into a lock, let it vibrate (to exercise the method #3), and the only thing for you to do is to apply slight pressure to the "wrench". Hey, with modern computers (micro-chips) you can even record the amplitude and frequency of oscillations that helped to lock-pick a given lock, associate it with an input that characterizes the lock (by maker and model number), and the next time when you see the same lock, you simply revoke the most-fastest-to-lock-pick regime from the gadget memory. This lock-pick can be apart of your iPhone (e.g. a USB driven plug-in gadget), that is equipped with some app, that memorizes the lock-picking regime (for each lock model you opened).

Galin Plamenov No, it’s not. Robbing someone always has ill intent but lock-picking can be a hobby or can be used for good like white hat hackers in the computer world. Lock picking is challenging and also can improve cognitive function.
