Click vessi.com/morgan and use code MORGAN for $25 your own pair of Vessi's! --- Here's one final look at my USBC routine and find out what went wrong on stage (and what went right!)
Your routine was randomly suggested to me on CZcams the other day. I'm not a coffee drinker, barely a tea drinker even. But your routine was so lovely and so well spoken. It really was art in motion.
right i ended up watiching it and like 2018s as well and was just thinking we make everything competetive. They def made me want to try some of their blends though with how they described them even though it would probably taste like normAL coffee
Morgan, the shaker you wanted to know the name of is a Boston shaker. The technique for opening one is to squeeze the connection; doing that will break the seal and allow the two parts to be separated. The physics of shaking a cocktail with ice is that the air in the shaker cools and therefore the air pressure in the shaker decreases. This is what forms the seal. By squeezing the connection, you allow air to enter the shaker and equalize the pressure which allows you to more easily open the shaker.
Yup! Join the two halves at an angle, so that you get one straight line from top to bottom, eg: at one side the walls should be parallel. Keep this side towards you (this is important). To separate, just smack the rim at 90 degrees from this imaginary line.
Your routine popped up in my recommended earlier today and I recognized you from social media but hadn't realized you had a channel nor your aspirations to compete in the USBC. I watched the entire routine and the whole time I was in awe of your fluidity, both in your way of speech and the way you conducted yourself. Very professional and well done !!
eye contact is so good while doing presentation, because it makes the judges feel the presenter really know what they talking about and instead of like tale-reading to them, it feels more intense like u talking personally to them. it makes u more professional and amazing. really admire u and the way u pay attention to that kind of details
Just like many others, I recently had one of your videos recommended to me. I didn't even know barista championships were a thing. I'm not a coffee drinker and I may not "get" why brewing coffee is this big of a thing for some, but I truly admire your knowledge, your professionalism, and your presentation. You're making coffee interesting to me 😊
Hi Morgan! I've been a barista for many years now.. You are so fantastic and your charisma is so addictive. Congratulations and we are all so proud of you!
I found your performance excellent, and this analysis does a great job of showing your skills and knowledge of the subject! Amazing content, as always💜
Yuzu is so delicious, I don't know if you've tried the Korean-style Yuzu tea you can get as almost like a marmalade consistency in a jar that you just add hot water to? I'm glad it's getting more popular as a flavour, though, it's probably my favourite citrus now.
The contest seems to require a lot of verbal communication with the judges throughout the presentation. Obviously a disadvantage for baristas who are of the quiet, shy type.
I randomly got suggested your video of the finals you did and I got sucked in and couldn’t get out of it watched the whole thing I had no idea that even existed! You did an amazing job I was just completely in awe
This was great to watch! The typical shaker you're describing is a Boston shaker. I personally find the class+aluminum ones pretty hard to use too. The one you used is typically called a Cobbler Shaker, and they're totally fine to use too. In both cases the trick I find to dealing with "stuck" shakers is not to twist, but the squeeze! It's a little counter-intuitive, but it really helps break the seal. Anyway, best of luck at WBC!!
Folly Coffee Roasters has a great interview with one of the judges. He talks about what it means to be a judge and getting into the judging mindset. He also talks about the controversy over MDC as an influencer and whether or not that influenced the judges. It is a really good conversation.
Especially keeping it up while having a mental troubleshooting.. that's probably the most impressive part for me. I can't even talk and type at the same time.
I absolutely hate mushy buttons and I have no idea why they exist, every button should be hard as sapphire, require the exact same amount of force every time, and provide strong haptic feedback for activation
You may have lost a point or two for not fully pressing the button to start your second pull at the same time, I hope the judges were kind and either added points (or didn't take as many away) for the flawless way that you handled the situation. No break in the rhythm of your presentation as you calmly and professionally handled the situation. If they weren't looking for it (and I'm sure they were), they would have missed it entirely.
James Hoffmann was the first coffee channel I subscribed to after trying to figure out my Aeropress. I had no idea he was a WBC or what that meant I just thought he made really solid video's and that's why i subscribed. When I first saw Morgan i thought she was just copying James as you can really see his influence on her mannerisms towards cofffee. Then I saw Morgans USBC routine and I finally realized how crazy those competition are. I subbed thinking that I had it backwards Morgan is the champion and James is the wannabe. Then I learned about the 2007 WBC lol.
I think we both come at it from different perspectives and backgrounds but one thing we both certainly share is a love for coffee and sharing it with others. There’s a wonderful plethora of coffee creators out there and I’m glad you’re able to find enjoyment in many of them!
I started with James' videos and I enjoy them very much. I watched a couple of other coffee channel videos and I didn't find them interesting compared to James. However when I watched one of Morgan's videos it struck a similar but different chord in my coffee brain and I have been watching her videos since then. Just an enjoyable presence to watch. I feel justified in watching her when I watched her win the Barista competition. It wouldn't have mattered how she placed but the fact the person I started watching went on to do as well as she did means I made the right choice in who to watch.
@@andrewzach1921 The competition doesn't really matter to me much. It just helped open my eyes to what a crazy ingredient coffee can be when you get creative with it. I'm a blue collar guy who used to get by on a keurig cream and sugar. Now I'm pulling espresso at home and steaming milk and its awesome!
@@morgandrinkscoffee I also find fascinating how similar you two are, yet so very distinct. The most interesting part is, how you two are in totally different phases of Coffee-Life, like you in the first 10 years, and James already a decade longer. It would be very interesting to hear you compare notes on how obtaining coffee knowledge over the last decade differs.
i´ve been so tempted to get an origami brewer multiple times lately, and have come so close to getting one, until i remember i literally already have three v60 brewers of different sizes at home.. i really don't need one, but they are SO pretty.
To be honest, I don't drink coffee at all 😁. But I enjoy watching your videos because of you! You are a very nice lady! You connect people all over the world. Thank you very much and best regards from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
Hey Morgan! I appreciate your knowledge about coffee, this is self evident that you are a great barista, I looking forward to have sip of a coffee made by you someday.
I was watching this video at 1:55 am and those knocks freaked me the hell out. I thought it was near me and I was spooked! 😂 Then realised I have my earphones on with Morgan on full volume so there's no way I could hear a door knock and that comment with the timestamp helped me calm my nerves. 😅
The Rocky is gone and you have not only a Vario Plus, but also a Mahlkonig x54! Two nice upgrades for sure. Are you doing a comparison? Or, using one for brew and the other for espresso?
"I hope you all have a nice cup of coffee." Me wathing at 2am because I have insomnia--the same situation where youtube even recommended your routine in the first place!
For some reason your routine was on my suggestion, I had no interest in watching it until I did... you were amazing and it was actually really interesting, I'd love to try your coffee sometime
I watched both your presentation and the #1, and I actually preferred yours. In fact, that was how I started following you! I was not inspired to follow the other guy. Your presentation made me love the art and natural world of coffee, it was brilliant. Thanks for your delightful videos, they're like mental therapy in a crazy world!!
I don’t know if I’m qualified to speak on this but since I do work in the cocktail industry I might suggest if you do chose to get a regular Boston/Parisian shaker the best place to smack it is the tiny gap to the side of the seal if you smack the bigger gap it’s very hard to break the seal. Also it may be wise to incorporate a dry or reverse dry shake because you are using egg white if you want an even foamier feel.
There’s a form all competitors fill out that alerts the judges of potential allergens, then the competition organizers make sure judges aren’t matched with competitors using ingredients that would be harmful to them
I don't know if I fully agree with the docking of points for not pushing the jelly buttons that you explained perfectly well at 13:42. As a UX Designer, that 100% sounds like a reasonable contested reason to blame it on the manufacturer and not the barista. Did they have a QA group to test it? Jelly buttons is a tactile interaction but was there also no audible notification to let the barista know it was pressed? There's a reason game controllers are the material they are and not jelly. A quality QA group would be able to sus that out immediately if tested in a proper environment that simulated realitic situations.
I had a question - You mentioned that one of the things the judges were looking for was eye contact. If, say, a competitor was autistic and found eye contact to be uncomfortable and unnatural, how would that be handled?
Well barista is a job that is mainly in the "hospitality" industry per say, so communication skills would be pretty important factor for the overall score. If the person does have autism, it would just be a disadvantage in this situation, sadly.

I enjoyed that walk through of your presentation very much. And that was an A++ slide as well. Love your channel!
The contest seems to require a lot of verbal communication with the judges throughout the presentation. Obviously a disadvantage for baristas who are of the quiet, shy type.
Most competitors come with a prepared and memorized script so that often negates any “shyness” but nerves can definitely flare up, memorized or not
It was a plasure to listen to your presentation! I loved it! You were so calm and explanatory while being so efficient it was great!

Yea squeezing deforms the lip and can help the air release. That breaks the vacuum caused by the chilling and dilutionm
